Jung's map of the soul: an introduction Murray Stein; hoopla digital Chicago : Open Court, English, 1998
More than a mere overview, the book offers readers a strong grounding in the basic principles of Jung's analytical psychology in addition to illuminating insights. Probably the best one-volume English language summary of Jung's thought. . . Stein develops the cartographical metaphor of the title by beginning with the "surface" (ego) of the psyche and exploring successively more complex areas, including complexes, libido thoery, shadow, "anima/us," the self, individuation, and synchronicity. The map soon resembles the multidisciplinary chart of a solar system more than it does a flat map. In each subject area, Stein draws heavily on papers that Jung wrote late in his life, but he sets these in the context of Jung's earlier developing thought. This method allows the author to demonstrate the interconnectedness and coherence of Jung's mature work. -- Choice, 10/15/98 Stein could just as aptly have named his introductory guide "Jung's Art of the Soul," for the course the founder of analytical psychology charted also has the intuitive sweep of an artist on an inner journey integrated within a systematic framework of techniques. Though acknowledging Jung's creative, intuitive approach to fathoming the mysteries of the individual and collective human psyche, the author presents a solid case for the basic coherency and empirical underpinnings of the great psychoanalyst's theory-counter to those who viewed him as more of a mystic or philosopher who espoused: "As within, so without." Territory consciously omitted from this psychic map concern his analytic practice and interpretation of culture, history, and religion. Organized like a graduate thesis, all the major concepts that evolved over Jung's lengthy career are lucidly summarized with some contextual details: ego-consciousness, complexes, libido theory, archetypes, persona/shadow, anima/animus, the self, individuation, and synchronicity. While this presentation is eminently more accessible than most Jungian texts-and Stein does preface it with personal remarks about his long-time attraction to Jung-those who seek a sense of Jung's own voice and personal development in his quest for answers to many of life's enigmas will have their appetites whet to explore further. -- From Independent Publisher

zlib/no-category/Philip Koch/Solitude: A Philosophical Encounter_116346300.epub
Solitude : A Philosophical Encounter Philip Koch Open Court : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2015
In Koch's Solitude , both solitude and engagement emerge as primary modes of human experience, equally essential for human completion. This work draws upon the vast corpus of literary reflections on solitude, especially Lao Tze, Sappho, Plotinus, Augustine, Petrarch, Montaigne, Goethe, Shelley, Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman and Proust. "Koch uses the work of philosophers, historians, and writers, as well as texts such as the Bible, to show what solitude is and isn't, and what being alone can do to and for the individual. Interesting for its literary scope and its conclusions about all the good true solitude can bring us." — Booklist "Reading this book is like dipping into many minds, fierce and gentle. The author reveals his long study of great philosophers, and interprets their thoughts through the lens of his own experience with solitude. He traces our early brushes with solitude and the fear it can engender, then the craving for solitude that comes with full, adult lives." — NAPRA Review

lgli/Joan; Weiner - Frege Explained (2011, Open Court).mobi
Frege Explained Weiner, Joan Open Court : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2011
What is the number one? How can we be sure that 2+2=4? These apparently ssimple questions have perplexed philosophers for thousands of years, but discussion of them was transformed by the German philosopher Gottlob Frege (1848-1925). Frege (pronounced Fray-guh)believed that arithmetic and all mathematics are derived from logic, and to prove this he developed a completely new approach to logic and numbers. Joan Weiner presents a very clear outline of Frege's life and ideas, showing how his thinking evolved through successive books and articles.

If I Were A kid in Ancient Rome (If I Were A kid in Ancient…) Lou Waryncia; Kenneth M Sheldon ePals Publishing, Children of the Ancient World, 2007
If YOU were a kid in the ancient world, everything would be different - or WOULD it? Kids today share many of the same experiences as kids who lived in the ancient world - even though thousands of years have gone by. If YOU were a kid living in ancient Rome . . . Would you go to school or gym class? What would you eat for breakfast and dinner? What toys would you play with? What "house rules" would your parents expect you to obey? Where would you hang out with friends? If I Were a Kid in Ancient Rome offers a fascinating look at the daily life of children growing up many years ago - and how it compares to life today.

lgli/Szasz Under Fire A Psychiatric Abolitionist Faces His Critics [1095212].pdf
Szasz Under Fire: A Psychiatric Abolitionist Faces His Critics (Under Fire Series) Jeffrey A Schaler; hoopla digital Open Court : Made available through hoopla, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), New York, 2015
Since he published The Myth of Mental Illness in 1961, professor of psychiatry Thomas Szasz has been the scourge of the psychiatric establishment. In dozens of books and articles, he has argued passionately and knowledgeably against compulsory commitment of the mentally ill, against the war on drugs, against the insanity defense in criminal trials, against the "diseasing" of voluntary humanpractices such as addiction and homosexual behavior, against the drugging of schoolchildren with Ritalin, and for the right to suicide. Most controversial of all has been his denial that "mental illness" is a literal disease, treatable by medical practitioners. In Szasz Under Fire, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other leading experts who disagree with Szasz on specific issues explain the reasons, with no holds barred, and Szasz replies cogently and pungently to each of them. Topics debated include the nature of mental illness, the right to suicide, the insanity defense, the use and abuse of drugs, and the responsibilities of psychiatrists and therapists. These exchanges are preceded by Szasz's autobiography and followed by a bibliography of his works.

Mr. Robot and Philosophy: Beyond Good and Evil Corp (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 109) Richard Greene & Rachel Robison-Greene Perseus Books, LLC, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2017
Mr. Robot has been hailed, not only as one of the most haunting and unnerving dramas ever to appear on television, but also as the first accurate popular presentation of how computer hacking and cyberterrorism actually work. Mr. Robot and Philosophy is aimed at thoughtful fans of this addictive show who will welcome the opportunity to explore Elliot Alderson's world from a philosophical perspective. The developing story of Mr. Robot constantly raises ethical and metaphysical issues. What happens to our personal identity when it's extended into cyberspace and an array of electronic devices? Are we in control of our online lives or are we being controlled? What does our right to privacy mean in a world where millions of people can observe what we're doing and saying? Is a virtual currency true money and could it replace traditional money? Can there be healthy forms of drug addiction? Can some types of so-called mental illness be useful and beneficial? Does it make any sense to unleash destruction upon the existing corporate economic structures, and can we expect something better to emerge from the ruins of a digital meltdown?

upload/trantor/en/Friedman, David/The Machinery of Freedom_ Guide to a Radical Capitalism.epub
The machinery of freedom : guide to a radical capitalism David D Friedman Open Court Publishing Company, 2015
David Friedman's The Machinery of Freedom argues for the extension of free market solutions into every area of life, from streets and roads to law enforcement. Friedman applies mainstream economic theory to everyday problems, brushes aside fallacious economic reasoning, and answers the most likely objections to make a formidable case for replacing state coercion with free and voluntary transactions. Friedman examines the ethics of economic life and shows how property is essential to the maintenance of any society. He refutes misconceptions about the ethical consequences of property and contracts, especially those concerned with interest on capital and the distributive repercussions of recognizing people's property rights. He gives a clear analysis of the problem of monopoly, showing how attempts to create a monopoly without government help result in failure, and how government imposed monopoly helps a privileged group while hurting the general public. Earlier editions of this work gave rise to a long-running debate among economists about the feasibility or desirability of turning police, courts, and law over to the voluntary arrangements of individuals. This new edition explores the latest wrinkles in these debates, and makes the case that law creation and enforcement can efficiently emerge from voluntary interactions.

lgli/Divergent and Philosophy The Factions of Life (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [1095220].epub
Divergent and Philosophy: The Factions of Life (Popular Culture and Philosophy, 94) Courtland Lewis (editor) Open Court Publishing Company, Popular Culture and Philosophy, 94; 94, 2016
Courtland Lewis has scoured the planet to bring together the most talented faction members, factionless, and even a few from the Bureau to discuss the philosophy of Divergent . Divergent and Philosophy begins by examining the personal struggles that all people face at some time: What sort of person should I be? What if I find out my life is a lie? What do I owe my parents? Am I normal? Once readers have finished answering these questions they’re ready for the “choosing ceremony.” Part two examines each faction, looking at its virtues, vices, and other features that will help readers pick the “right” faction. This part gives readers a glimpse into what it’s like to be faced with the most important decision of our lives, the one that will forever determine who we are. Part three takes a step takes a step back, in order to question Chicago's ordering of society. Chicago is on the verge of revolution, but is this the result of the faction system itself, or is it the people within the factions that are behind the social discord? Part four shifts the focus individuals and those who hold power. Part five tells us how to recognize injustice.

The Cabala: It's Influence on Judaism and Christianity (Open Court paperback) Pick, Bernhard, 1842-1917 The Open Court Publishing Co, Open Court paperback, La Salle, Ill, Illinois, 1974
Be the Cabala is a dangerous subject. Traditional stories try to discourage your curiosity. For instance, there is the tale about four sages in a secret garden (of the Cabala): one of them looked around and died; another looked around and lost his reason; the Third eventually tried to destroy the garden; only the fourth entered and returned ot safety. But if you insist on entering into the Cabala, you choose a sure guide with Bernhard Pick's account of the mystical tradition in Judaism, opening the way to the Cabalistic secret garden. Following his guide you can discover the power of a religious tradition that is suddenly again enriching modern understanding. Pick deftly describes the visionary teaching of the Cabalists and their conflicts with orthodox Judaism from the 7th to the 18th centuries, reaching back to Philo to find the roots of their intriguing beliefs. Pick's history pays special attention to the book of Zohar, revealing the key to the mathematical doctrines that fascinated such Renaissance luminaries as Raymond Lully, Pico di Mirandola, Henry More and Jacob Boehme - not to mention Faust! The very word Cabala means to receive; the Cabalistic mystical goal is to touch Divinity. Pick proves that a scholar can pack a brief text into an exciting, orderly account - and be charming at the same time. His book is an excellent introduction to a mysterious religious underground. This edition is an unabridged reprint of the 1913 Open Court clothbound edition.

Psych and Philosophy: Some Dark Juju-Magumbo (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 75) Robert Arp Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2013
“I'm getting something," says Shawn, assuming a look of intense concentration and pressing his fingertips to the sides of his head. Shawn Spencer uses lies, pretense, and distraction to get at the truth. But can pseudoscience and fakery really be so helpful? And if they can be, is it ethical to employ them? Psych and Philosophy takes an entertaining tour through the philosophical issues raised by a fake psychic. Can faulty logic get to the truth quicker than good logic? Are other people to blame for Shawn's deceptions, because they're more ready to credit him with supernatural powers than with superior natural powers? Is instinct more important than smart thinking—in police work and in life? Is it ethical to tell lies to promote the truth (and protect the public from criminals)? Almost every episode of Psych revolves around a grisly death, treated humorously by the repartee between Shawn and Gus. The show has much to tell us about human ways of coping with death, as well as about the problem of justified knowledge, the ethics of law enforcement, and the interaction of love, friendship, loyalty, and professionalism.

Perry Mason and Philosophy: The Case of the Awesome Attorney (Popular Culture and Philosophy, 133) Heather L. Rivera, Robert Arp Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Popular culture and philosophy, volume 133, First printing, Chicago, IL, 2020
In 1933 the crime writer Erle Stanley Gardner, himself a practicing lawyer, unleashed the character Perry Mason in the novel The Case of the Velvet Claws. Perry Mason entered into public consciousness as a new conception of the role of the defense lawyer, so that millions of Americans came to expect every criminal trial to have its “Perry Mason moment.” In the 1950s the Perry Mason TV show had a phenomenal success, and Mason came to be identified with Raymond Burr. Now Perry Mason has again been restored to life in the HBO series starring Matthew Rhys and John Lithgow. Meanwhile, the eighty-two original Erle Stanley Gardner novels continue to sell thousands of copies each week. Perry Mason gave America a new conception of the trial lawyer, as someone who was always loyal to his client and always prepared to use dirty tricks such as misdirection and withholding of evidence to protect the innocent and secure the ends of Justice. The Mason of the novels is less scrupulous than the Raymond Burr Mason, and would sometimes be in danger of going to jail if the trial didn’t turn out right―which it always did, largely because of Mason’s cleverness. The Perry Mason icon raises many philosophical issues explored by seventeen different philosophers in this book, including: ● Can we defend Paul Drake’s claim (The Case of the Blonde Bonanza) that Mason is “a paragon of righteous virtue” despite his predilection for skating on thin legal ice? ● Can complex murder cases be solved by facts alone―or do we also need empathy? ● The most convincing way to give a TV episode a surprise ending is by the guilty person suddenly confessing. But in reality, is a confession necessarily so convincing? ● Does Perry Mason represent the Messiah? ● How does the Raymond Burr Perry Mason compare with the more recent TV character Saul Goodman (Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul)? ● Is it morally okay to mislead the police if this helps your client and your client is...

lgli/American Horror Story and Philosophy Life Is but a Nightmare (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [AN 1624514].epub
American Horror Story and Philosophy : Life Is but a Nightmare Richard Greene; Rachel Robison-Greene Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), [N.p.], 2017
In American Horror Story and Philosophy, philosophers with varying backgrounds and interests explore different aspects of this popular “erotic thriller” TV show, with its enthusiastic cult following and strong critical approval. The result is a collection of intriguing and provocative thoughts on deeper questions prompted by the creepy side of the human imagination. As an “anthology show,” American Horror Story has a unique structure in the horror genre because it explores distinct subgenres of horror in each season. As a result, each season raises its own set of philosophical issues. The show’s first season, Murder House, is a traditional haunted house story. Philosophical topics expounded here include: the moral issues pertaining to featuring a mass murderer as one of the season’s main protagonists; the problem of other minds—when I see an old hag, how can I know that you don’t see a sexy maid? And whether it is rationally justified to fear the Piggy Man. Season Two, Asylum, takes place inside a mid-twentieth-century mental hospital. Among other classic horror subgenres, this season includes story lines featuring demonic possession and space aliens. Chapters inspired by this season include such topics as: the ethics of investigative reporting and whistleblowing; personal identity and demonic possession; philosophical problems arising from eugenics; and the ethics and efficacy of torture. Season Three, Coven, focuses on witchcraft in the contemporary world. Chapters motivated by this season include: sisterhood and feminism as starkly demonstrated in a coven; the metaphysics of traditional voodoo zombies (in contrast to the currently fashionable “infected” zombies); the uses of violent revenge; and the metaphysics of reanimation. Season Four, Freak Show, takes place in a circus. Philosophical writers look at life under the Big Top as an example of “life imitating art”; several puzzles about personal identity and identity politics (crystallized in the two-headed girl, the bearded lady, and the lobster boy); the ethical question of honor and virtue among thieves; as well as several topics in social and political philosophy. Season Five, Hotel, is, among other disturbing material, about vampires. Chapters inspired by this season include: the ethics of creating vampire progeny; LGBT-related philosophical issues; and existentialism as it applies to serial killers, Season Six, Roanoke, often considered the most creative of the seasons so far, partly because of its employment of the style of documentaries with dramatic re-enactments, and its mimicry of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Among the philosophical themes explored here are what happens to moral obligations under the Blood Moon; the proper role of truth in storytelling; and the defensibility of cultural imperialism.

lgli/Halo and Philosophy Intellect Evolved (Popular Culture and Philosophy) [479325].epub
Halo and Philosophy: Intellect Evolved (Popular Culture and Philosophy Book 59) Luke Cuddy; Fred Van Lente Open Court Publishing Company, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Chicago, 2011
Since the Doom series, First Person Shooter (FPS) videogames have ricocheted through the gaming community, often reaching outside that community to the wider public. While critics primarily lampoon FPSs for their aggressiveness and on-screen violence, gamers see something else. Halo is one of the greatest, most successful FPSs ever to grace the world of gaming. Although Halo is a FPS, it has a science-fiction storyline that draws from previous award-winning science fiction literature. It employs a game mechanic that limits the amount of weapons a player can carry to two, and a multiplayer element that has spawned websites like Red vs. Blue and games within the game created by players themselves. Halo 's unique and extraordinary features raise serious questions. Are campers really doing anything wrong? Does Halo 's music match the experience of the gamer? Would Plato have used Halo to train citizens to live an ethical life? What sort of Artificial Intelligence exists in Halo and how is it used? Can the player's experience of war tell us anything about actual war? Is there meaning to Master Chief's rough existence? How does it affect the player's ego if she identifies too strongly with an aggressive character like Master Chief? Is Halo really science fiction? Can Halo be used for enlightenment-oriented thinking in the Buddhist sense? Does Halo 's weapon limitation actually contribute to the depth of the gameplay? When we willingly play Halo only to die again and again, are we engaging in some sort of self-injurious behavior? What is expansive gameplay and how can it be informed by the philosophy of Michel Foucault? In what way does Halo 's post-apocalyptic paradigm force gamers to see themselves as agents of divine deliverance? What can Red vs. Blue teach us about personal identity? These questions are tackled by writers who are both Halo cognoscenti and active philosophers, with a foreword by renowned Halo fiction author Fred Van Lente and an afterword by leading games scholar and artist Roger Ngim.

Highland Fling Ernst, Kathleen, 1959- Chicago: Cricket Books, 1st ed., Chicago, Illinois, 2006
A year ago, Tanya Zeshonski was living in Wisconsin, interning at the public television station, and eating Polish food on the holidays. Then her mother divorced her father, reclaimed her maiden name of MacDonald, and moved to North Carolina to submerge them all in their Scottish heritage. So now, at 15, Tanya is the oldest beginning student at the Flora MacDonald School of Highland Dance. Instead of pursuing her dream of being a filmmaker, shes learning the Highland Fling, one of the national dances of Scotland. Learning it means a lot to her mother, though, so Tanya resigns herself to practicing for the biggest event of the summer, the Cross Creek Highland Games. At the games, Tanya must face not only the intricacies of the dance, but the complications brought on by a handsome bagpiper named Miguel, a ghostly ancestor, and the arrival of her father. Tanyas sharp, funny voice rings true as she describes the delicate steps of the dance and the beginning of her new life.
