Childhood and the Philosophy of Education: An Anti-Aristotelian Perspective (Continuum Studies in Educational Research) Andrew Stables Continuum International Publishing Group, Incorporated, (Continuum Studies in Educational Research), 1, 2009
Philosophical accounts of childhood have tended to derive from Plato and Aristotle, who portrayed children (like women, animals, slaves, and the mob) as unreasonable and incomplete in terms of lacking formal and final causes and ends. Despite much rhetoric concerning either the sinfulness or purity of children (as in Puritanism and Romanticism respectively), the assumption that children are marginal has endured. Modern theories, including recent interpretations of neuroscience, have re-enforced this sense of children's incompleteness. This fascinating monograph seeks to overturn this philosophical tradition. It develops instead a "fully semiotic" perspective, arguing that in so far as children are no more or less interpreters of the world than adults, they are no more or less reasoning agents. This, the book shows, has radical implications, particularly for the question of how we seek to educate children. One Aristotelian legacy is the unquestioned belief that societies must educate the young irrespective of the latter's wishes. Another is that childhood must be grown out of and left behind. ** Review 'What would it mean for our thinking about education, and in particular, our institutional arrangements for children's education, were we to think of children not as incomplete, or unprepared for the separate world of adults, but as semiotic engagers in life alongside adults? Andrew Stables explores the radical implications of this question in a lively and accessible manner, offering, along the way, a fascinating account of some central themes in the history and philosophy of childhood, and addressing the implications for our conceptualization of childhood and adulthood of some important strands in contemporary social and political theory, including environmental ethics, post-humanism and post-modernism. Whether or not one is convinced by Stables' claim that a reconceptualization of childhood is due, his analysis certainly offers a stimulating challenge to some existing conceptualizations.' Judith Suissa, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy of Education, Institute of Education, University of London, UK 'Too often, in recent years, there has been a propensity for academics writing about childhood, children's voice and growing up to offer a totalising constructionist account on the basis of too little evidence and a too unsubtle analysis. Here, Andrew Stables offers an antidote to the easy bon mot. His account of childhood relies on a careful reading of a range of historical and philosophical sources. Moreover he carefully explores the educational implications of his analysis of childhood; an analysis that avoids the twin perils of a crass essentialism on the one hand and a rootless deconstructed account on the other. To do so he draws on semiotic work to look at children as sign makers in their own right. Not everyone will agree with everything in Stables' book, but for those interested in thinking about childhood and education, it is a must read.' Professor James C Conroy, Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Glasgow, UK 'Overall, the book provides a very interesting contribution to literature in child studies and education. Despite Stables' strong analytical-philosophical approach, the book covers a wide range of disciplines including history, ethics, environmental studies, pedagogy and political science...Stables' theory of living as semiotic engagement provides a unique and promising conceptual framework for the study of childhood and educational experience.' Environmental Education Research Andrew Stables has written an impressive and exciting book. Childhood and the Philosophy of Education is an ambitious project that opens up new ways of thinking about childhood, learning and education ( Studies in Philosophy and Education ) Andrew Stables has written an impressive and exciting book... the way in which Stables brings a wide range of ideas to bear on his exploration of complex themes and issues is a worthwhile and at times really innovative contribution to the field. (Springer (Stud Philos Educ 2010)) 'What would it mean for our thinking about education, and in particular, our institutional arrangements for children’s education, were we to think of children not as incomplete, or unprepared for the separate world of adults, but as semiotic engagers in life alongside adults? Ozark Red Woolard, Jim Goldminds Publishing, LLC, 2007
Walt Hannar blames his son, Ben, for the death of his prized coonhound, Sweet Lou. Ben prays for an opportunity to regain the closeness he once enjoyed with his father. His hopes soar when his father purchases a Redbone hound from a kennel in far off Arkansas to take Sweet Lou's place. Perhaps the new coonhound will help his father forget the past and eventually forgive Ben. Ben's hopes prove short-lived. To the utter embarrassment of his father, Ozark Red, the new coonhound, runs the wrong scent and makes a fool out of his father in front of half the hunters in Licking County. Emma Jean, Ben's sister, insists that he make things right with the dog breeder that cheated their father before the whole family falls apart. Ben is dismayed. If their father, a former policeman, can't get a new hound or his money back from a crook five states away, how could he?

Getting High : Marijuana Through the Ages John Charles Chasteen Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, Maryland, 2016
This engaging book traces the global history of marijuana, reaching back thousands of years. Noted historian John Charles Chasteen follows the use of the drug since Neolithic times, which makes marijuana among the first domesticated plants. Surprisingly, though, only infrequently has it been used as a recreational drug. Instead, there is a vibrant spiritual dimension to its long history that has been continually ignored. Beginning with the familiar “outbreak” of the 1960s, Chasteen unearths successive layers of marijuana’s history. Written with insight, clarity, sophistication, and good humor, this deeply informed work discusses the cultivation of cannabis and its many forms, including hemp, one of the world’s principal fiber crops. After a tour of Latin America, Africa, India, and the Muslim world, Chasteen concludes that unlike alcohol marijuana has always flourished outside the mainstream. Its principal users have been creative outsiders of many kinds—mystics, artists, musicians, free thinkers, and spiritual seekers—as well as poor laborers attracted by its low cost. Marijuana, it seems, is a mind-expanding drug after all, and Chasteen explores its rich heritage with captivating insight. ** This engaging book traces the global history of marijuana, reaching back thousands of years. Lancaster Against York : The Wars of the Roses and the Foundation of Modern Britain Trevor Royle St. Martin's Press, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., [N.p.], 2008
<p>In this sweeping history, Trevor Royle details one of the bloodiest episodes in British history. The prize was the crown of England, and the players were the rival houses of Lancaster and York. The dynastic quarrel threatened the collapse of the monarchy as a succession of weak rulers failed to deal with an overzealous aristocracy, plunging England into a series of violent encounters. The bloody battles and political intrigue between the rival heirs of King Edward III brought forth one of the most dynamic ruling families of England--the Tudors.</p>

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Enterprise Games_ Using Game Mechanics to Build a Better Business - Michael Hugos.pdf
Enterprise games : using game mechanics to build a better business Hugos, Michael O'Reilly Media, Incorporated, O'Reilly Media, Sebastopol, CA, 2012
Games are playing a crucial role in many successful businesses—not just in PR and marketing, but as a model for designing business systems and workflows. In this book, Michael Hugos provides compelling case studies that demonstrate how game mechanics enable companies to respond quickly to challenges in today’s real-time economy. It’s not about giving workers a smiley face for producing more widgets. You’ll discover how game mechanics—particularly popular multiplayer video games—provide field-tested best practices for engaging workers in creative and complex activities. With games, your company can shift from an outmoded top-down hierarchy to an agile network structure that promotes coordination over control. Discover why industrial age business structures from the 20th century no longer work Design real-time business collaboration systems, using massively multiplayer online game concepts Make your in-house systems more agile with technologies such as social media, mobile devices, and cloud computing Understand game dynamics: goals, rules, real-time feedback, and voluntary participation Apply virtual worlds and 3-D animation to business intelligence and data analytics applications Amazon.com Review Notes from the Author Author Michael Hugos takes the strategies employed in such Massively Multiuser Online (MMO) games and applies them to real-life situations. A longtime CIO, Hugos has seen these techniques and tips work. Here is a small sampling of his wisdom: The Engagement Machine A game is an engagement engine – it attracts and engages players. You can measure the success of a game by the number of players it attracts and the level of engagement it gets from players. Think of a business also as engagement engine – it attracts and engages customers and employees. You can measure its success by the number of customers and enthusiastic employees it attracts. Now think of games that attract you and why – what ideas does this give you for using game mechanics in your own business? IRL The key element to creating a game is a real-time feedback system that shows people what the score is and whether their actions are taking them closer to or further away from the goal. Games attract players through excitement created by this moment-to-moment feedback. Companies can attract customers and enthusiastic employees through excitement created by showing them what is happening in their business activities in real-time or near real-time and then giving them reasons to care about the outcome. Technology/Process/People There are three necessary conditions to create a feedback system and generate excitement in a company or business activity: 1) Real-time or near real-time visibility of relevant data for everyone involved – this is technology; 2) Authority to act within predefined rules to accomplish predefined goals is delegated to everyone involved – this is process; 3) A stake in the outcome for everyone involved so everyone is motivated to act and continue to improve as situations change – this is people. Choose Your Avatar Increase your company’s ability to communicate and collaborate with customers, partners and employees by creating systems with features similar to those used in MMO games such as "World of Warcraft" and "EVE Online." Present business collaboration systems rarely go beyond document sharing and video conferencing. Next generation business collaboration systems can use 3D animation, avatars and virtual worlds to deliver levels of performance in business similar to what MMOs do for online game play. About the Author Michael Hugos is an author, speaker, award-winning CIO and principal at Center for Systems Innovation [c4s . He works with clients to find elegant solutions to complex problems with focus in supply chains, business intelligence, and new business ventures. Earlier he spent six years as CIO of a national distribution organization where he developed a suite of supply chain and e-business systems that transformed the company's operations and revenue model. For this work he won the CIO 100 Award, the InformationWeek 500 Award and the Premier 100 Award. He earned his MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and writes a blog for CIO magazine called "Doing Business in Real Time". State Capitalism and World Revolution (The Charles H. Kerr Library) C. L. R. James, Raya Dunayevskaya, Grace Lee Boggs, Martin Glaberman, Paul Buhle PM Press, The Charles H. Kerr library, Oakland, Calif, 2013
Originally published in 1950, this analysis by three respected activists successfully predicted the future course of Marxism. Their revolutionary critique of industrial civilization possessed a striking originality that was insular in its political context and optimistic in its expectations for the working class. They envisioned that the working class activity would defy trends away from class and social issues and toward the so-called “End of Ideology.” Brought forth in a new edition, this viewpoint and others reveals much, even years later, that challenges Marxist and other orthodoxies. State Capitalism and World Revolution is the most succinct version of C. L. R. James and his collaborators general conclusions about industrial culture and is a pioneering critique of Lenin and Trotsky, and a reclamation of Marx. This edition includes the original preface from Martin Glaberman and a new introduction from Paul Buhle. **

Vulnerability and Valour : A Gendered Analysis of Everyday Life in the Dead Sea Scrolls Communities Jessica M. Keady, Lester L. Grabbe T&T Clark; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, New York, 2017
Jessica M. Keady uses insights from social science and gender theory to shed light on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the community at Qumran. Through her analysis Keady shows that it was not only women who could be viewed as an impure problem, but also that men shared these characteristics as well. The first framework adopted by Keady is masculinity studies, specifically Raewyn Connell's hegemonic masculinity, which Keady applies to the Rule of the Community (in its 1QS form) and the War Scroll (in its 1QM form), to demonstrate the vulnerable and uncontrollable aspects of ordinary male impurities. Secondly, the embodied and empowered aspects of impure women are revealed through an application of embodiment theories to selected passages from 4QD (4Q266 and 4Q272) and 4QTohorot A (4Q274). Thirdly, sociological insights from Susie Scott's understanding of the everyday - through the mundane, the routine and the breaking of rules - reveal how impurity disrupts the constructions of daily life. Keady applies Scott's three conceptual features for understanding the everyday to the Temple Scroll (11QTa) and the Rule of the Congregation (1QSa) to demonstrate the changing dynamics between ordinary impure males and impure females. Underlying each of these three points is the premise that gender and purity in the Dead Sea Scrolls communities are performative, dynamic and constantly changing.

The Cognitive Neuropsychology Of Schizophrenia (Essays in Cognitive Psychology) Christopher Donald Frith Psychology Press Ltd, Essays in Cognitive Psychology, New edition, 1995
<p>Schizophrenic patients have bizarre experiences which reflect a disorder in the contents of consciousness. For example, patients hear voices talking about them or they are convinced that alien forces are controlling their actions. Their abnormal behaviour includes incoherence and lack of will. In this book an explanation of these baffling signs and symptoms is provided using the framework of cognitive neuropsychology.<br> The cognitive abnormalities that underlie these signs and symptoms suggest impairment in a system which constructs and monitors representations of certain abstract (especially mental) events in consciousness. For example, schizophrenic patients can no longer construct representations of their intentions to act. Thus, if actions occur, these will be experienced as coming out of the blue and hence can seem alien. The patient who lacks awareness of his own intentions will stop acting spontaneously and hence will show a lack of will.<br> The psychological processes that are abnormal in schizophrenia can be related to underlying brain systems using evidence from human and animal neuropsychology. Interactions between prefrontal cortex and other parts of the brain, especially temporal cortex appear critical for constructing the contents of consciousness. It is these interactions that are likely to be impaired in schizophrenia.</p>

Shapes of Freedom : Hegel's Philosophy of World History in Theological Perspective Peter Crafts Hodgson OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2012
"Peter C. Hodgson explores Hegel's bold vision of history as the progress of the consciousness of freedom. Following an introductory chapter on the textual sources, the key categories, and the modes of writing history that Hegel distinguishes, Hodgson presents a new interpretation of Hegel's conception of freedom. Freedom is not simply a human production, but takes shape through the interweaving of the divine idea and human passions, and such freedom defines the purpose of historical events in the midst of apparent chaos. Freedom is also a process that unfolds through stages of historical/cultural development and is oriented to an end that occurs within history (the 'kingdom of freedom'). The purpose and the process of history are tragic, however, because history is also a 'slaughterhouse' that shatters even the finest human creations and requires a constant rebuilding. Hegel's God is not a supreme being or 'large entity' but the 'true infinite' that encompasses the finite. History manifests the rule of God ('providence'), and it functions as the justification of God ('theodicy'). But the God who rules in and is justified by history is a crucified God who takes the suffering, anguish, and evil of the world into and upon godself, accomplishing reconciliation in the midst of ongoing estrangement and inescapable death. Shapes of Freedom addresses these themes in the context of present-day questions about what they mean and whether they still have validity"-- "Peter C. Hodgson explores Hegel's bold vision of history as the progress of the consciousness of freedom. He explores the themes of Hegel's philosophy of world history--which include freedom, the purpose and process of history, and the nature of God--in the context of present-day questions about what they mean and whether they still have validity"--

Ezra Pounds Adams Cantos Historicizing Modernism David Ten Eyck Bloomsbury Publishing PLC; Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2012
Ezra Pound transformed his style of poetry when he wrote The Adams Cantos in the 1920s. But what caused him to rethink his earlier writing techniques? Grounded in archival material, this study explores the extent to which Pound's poetry changed in response to his reading of 17th-century American History and the social climate of the pre-war period. Drawing on the Ezra Pound papers, David Ten Eyck documents the changes to Pound's documentary techniques, establishing a chronology of the composition of The Cantos. His close readings of specific passages, set against the interwar years, allow Ten Eyck to gain insights into Pound's 1930s political and social criticism. Through references to the annotated copy of The Works of John Adams, he explores Pound's engagement with Adams at the expense of Thomas Jefferson: a figure formally at the heart of his previous work. Ultimately, this contextual and archival study uses John Adams and America to unlock the fascist beliefs and the later poetry of Ezra Pound. ** Review This illuminating study of Ezra Pound's Adams Cantos (62 to 71 of Pound's Cantos)offers a tour de force of careful literary-historical scholarship, adroit reading, and lucid explication. Ten Eyck gives one of the Cantos' least critically addressed and least favoured sections astute and sympathetic treatment, dispelling many misguided assumptions about The Adams Cantos and opening up fruitful avenues for appreciating both their hitherto unrecognized centrality to the Cantos as a whole and the importance of their poetic achievement more generally. Challenging the longstanding view that the Adams fall among the least poetically successful of the Cantos, Ten Eyck skillfully brings out the subtlety of Pound's poetic effects in this section. Helpful, too, is the light the book sheds on the evolution of what is now commonly termed Pound's "documentary method": Ten Eyck usefully complicates oversimplified received ideas about this approach through patient attention to materials related to the making of The Adams Cantos (often those that Ten Eyck has unearthed from archives), such as Pound's reading, notes and drafts, and engagement with and transformation of source texts. Even as he acknowledges ways in which Pound's approach often misleads and contributes to the distortion of historical facts, Ten Eyck makes a persuasive case for greater attention to these Cantos, given their pivotal role in Pound's magnum opus and thought more broadly-and offers astute guidance for readers seeking to understand Pound's distinctive poetics and convictions more closely and richly. This robustly researched book is a must for Pound scholars, and it can also be read profitably by those wishing to gain acquaintance with Pound's poetics in the Cantos and the main lines of Pound's middle years. -- Miranda B. Hickman, Associate Professor of English, McGill University, Canada Focused on an under-discussed and difficult to understand group of Ezra Pound's Cantos, Ezra Pound's Adams Cantos delves into the archival and historical record of these poems to demonstrate their crucial role in Pound's endeavor to compose "a poem including history." Subtly engaged in Pound's larger literary and cultural project of the 1930s, Ten Eyck deftly brings readers afresh to these underappreciated poems, illuminating Pound's own reading of John Adams, his process of composition, and his development of "a documentary method" of poetic writing-one of the most radical elements of The Cantos. Ten Eyck's greatest contribution, however, is his convincing insistence that we engage these poems and their politics literarily, and his teaching us how to do so. -- Catherine E. Paul, Professor of English, Clemson University, USA ...David Ten Eyck offers a careful and lucid analysis of Pound's interest in John Adams, which crystallize in the 'Adams Cantos'. By giving us fine close readings, and by looking at these Cantos in the context of Pound's life and development of his political and social views, Ten Eyck successfully counters the general negative critical reception of this part of Pound's magnum opus, also in terms of its poetic quality. He convincingly demonstrates how Pound's use of the Adams material is a new development in his 'historical method' and in the textual evolution of the poem, making his study an indispensable tool for any reader of Pound's work. -- Peter Liebregts, Leiden University, The Netherlands David Ten Eyck's book provides an invaluable service to scholarship in its scrupulous adumbration of famously difficult modernist verse. Ezra Pound's Adams Cantos elaborates the "documentary method" at work in Pound's epic, tracing its development from the Malatesta Cantos of the 1920s to its fullest expression in the inscrutable poems dealing with the political thought and milieu of John Adams, composed swiftly in the lengthening European shadows of World War Two. Ten Eyck accomplishes a rare thing by showing how Pound's methods of citation transform from conventional (if dense) literary reference to what Peter Nicholls calls "an autonomous and continuous discourse." In doing so, Ten Eyck unlocks a hitherto oblique dimension of Pound's "poem containing history." The book is a lesson in How to Read: it performs a material hermeneutics carefully calibrated to a deep and judicious awareness of seemingly intransigent poetic materials and underlying documentary evidence. More than bringing the archive into the text - though surely the book does a deft job of this - Ezra Pound's Adams Cantos reinvigorates our understanding of Pound's own aspiration to write a poem that would function as a cultural repository, a textual place "where memory liveth. -- Mark Byron, University of Sydney, Australia The book is a model of scholarly attention, one that exhibits a variety of interpretative approaches without overriding commitment to any one in particular: close readings do not preclude explanations based on biographical evidence, nor does textual criticism disqualify the application of 'theory' ... revealing and innovative original scholarship ... Throughout, the author offers clear and convincing analysis of Pound's accompanying and not-unrelated ideological commitments. Forum for Modern Language Studies About the Author David Ten Eyck teaches Modernism and poetry at the University of Lorraine, France. He is currently co-editing a new critical edition of Pound's Pisan Cantos and, in addition to his work on Pound he has written articles on 20th-century writers such as David Jones, James Joyce, John Berryman and Philip Larkin.

Rethinking right-wing women: Gender and the Conservative Party, 1880s to the present (New Perspectives on the Right, 1) Clarisse Berthezène, Julie V. Gottlieb Manchester University Press, Manchester University Press, Manchester, 2018
Rethinking Right-Wing Women explores the institutional structures for and the representations, mobilisation, and the political careers of women in the British Conservative Party since the late 19th century. From the Primrose League (est.1883) to Women2Win (est.2005), the party has exploited women's political commitment and their social power from the grass-roots to the heights of the establishment. Yet, although it is the party that extended the equal franchise, had the first woman MP to sit Parliament, and produced the first two women Prime Ministers, the UK Conservative Party has developed political roles for women that jar with feminist and progressive agendas. Conservative women have tended to be more concerned about the fulfilment of women's duties than the realisation of women's rights. This book tackles the ambivalences between women's politicisation and women's emancipation in the history of Britain's most electorally successful and hegemonic political party. -- Provided by publisher

Inside scientology : the story of America's most secretive religion Reitman, Janet Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (Boston/NY), 1st Edition, First Edition, US, 2011
Amazon.com Review Amazon Best Books of the Month, July 2011 : Whatever your opinion of Scientology, the truth is more extreme. Inside Scientology is journalist Janet Reitman's incredible book-length follow-up to the Rolling Stone cover story of the same name, a 2007 finalist for the National Magazine Award. Founded by wayward science-fiction writer and historical revisionist par excellence L. Ron Hubbard, "America's Most Secretive Religion" is perhaps best known for high-profile adherents like Tom Cruise and John Travolta, but its tenets, processes, and internal organization form a story as surprising and captivating as that of any investigative work released this year. Reitman's extensive research--including hundreds of interviews with devotees and defectors alike--culminates in an expansive, page-turning survey of the origins, development, crises, beliefs, and scandals of this fascinating incorporated religion, all with a fair-minded approach that favors diligent curiosity over judgment at every turn. "It has been my goal to write the first objective modern history of the Church of Scientology," Reitman writes in the book's introduction, and to this end, Inside Scientology succeeds in spades. This book will remain the definitive study of the subject for a long time to come. -- Jason Kirk Review A New York Times Notable Book "[A] meticulously compiled exposé, culled from hundreds of interviews with active Scientologists and defectors alike. [Reitman's] revelations — including abuse allegations against church leader David Miscavige and details about the organization's aggressive courtship of Tom Cruise — come with impressive backup." - Entertainment Weekly "A serious, painstaking investigation of the organization's unique structure and bare-knucled business acumen." - GQ "In a new book, Inside Scientology: The Story of America's Most Secret Religion , author Janet Reitman tell the fascinating history of the mysterious organization and its members." - Time.com "The most complete picture of Scientology so far." –Garry Wills, New York Times Book Review "Reitman's book delivers all it promises, and it promises a lot… [Reitman] has put together the most masterfully written, narratively rewarding, and thorough yarn about L. Ron Hubbard, David Miscavige, and Scientology and its strange past, present, and possible future….In Inside Scientology , we have a thorough, brave journalist backed by a major publisher, and soon what no doubt will be a major publicity push: Reitman's book should soon become Scientology's biggest headache in years." - Village Voice "This book is fearless" - Wall Street Journal "[A] meaty, engaging new book" -Slate.com "[A] meticulously researched history and revealing exposé, a frightening portrait of a religion that many find not just controversial, but dangerous…Throughout the book, the author displays consummate journalistic skills. Her accumulation of evidence is particularly impressive and gives rise to one of the more memorable works of investigative nonfiction in recent years."- Boston Globe "A well-researched and compelling read" - Los Angeles Times "[A] richly narrative history of the organization… The book is convincing and compelling. It will be interesting to see how the Scientology leadership responds." - St Louis Post Dispatch "So most journalistic accounts of Scientology fall into two categories: ax-grinding expose or fawning apologism. Fortunately Janet Reitman finds a third way in her authoritative, absorbing "Inside Scientology": nuanced reporting that lets the facts speak for themselves..."Inside Scientology" will remain a thoughtful, fair-minded record of its tumultuous first generation." - San Francisco Chronicle "Inside Scientology is a masterful piece of reporting....a compelling introduction to "America’s most secretive religion," as the subtitle has it. Even for those who have no interest in parsing when cults become religions or why faith upends fact, Reitman tells a spellbinding story of a larger-than-life personality whose quirks, ticks and charisma shaped America’s newest homegrown religious movement." - Washington Post "INSIDE SCIENTOLOGY is notable for its depth and sweep. Reitman's research pays off not only in rich portrayals of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and current leader David Miscavige, but in intimate portraits of people who have been swept up along the way….Reitman's analysis of Scientology's ability to survive scandal and mockery is compelling and persuasive." - Seattle Times "The inside scoop on Scientology, the steeped-in-secrecy religion of L. Ron Hubbard." - Minneapolis Star Tribune " Inside Scientology leaves no scandal unturned in the life of L. Ron Hubbard, underlings, celebrities and cult "slaves" in this story of America's most secretive religion....It is a riveting read not only for its thorough research, and winning style, but because [Reitman] has left no greed undescribed in the 396 page-turner." - Seattle Post Intelligencer "Inside Scientology" by Janet Reitman is an amazing book...a masterful telling of the church’s history and the division among its members" - Asbury Park Press " Inside Scientology is an engrossing, groundbreaking work that brings a welcome sense of fair-mindedness to a subject that is, for many journalists and scholars, too hot to touch. Reitman has accomplished the miracle of adding light without heat."- Lawrence Wright, author of The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11 "Inside Scientology goes beyond the celebrities and the scandals -- though they're here in all their absurdity and horror, too -- to find in Scientology a more profound story about "technology" as an article of faith and faith as a vessel for science, or, at least, science fiction. With courage, empathy, and clarity -- if that word can be reclaimed from L. Ron Hubbard -- Janet Reitman has with this definitive investigation laid bare the genesis and possibly the endgame of America's strangest religion".--Jeff Sharlet, bestselling author of The Family and C Street "Thoroughly engrossing page-turner on the shape-shifting Church of Scientology...A bizarre and complicated history told with masterful control." -Kirkus Reviews starred "A detailed and readable examination of the life of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the church, and his successor, David Miscavige. The book is rife with astonishing accounts of the abuses of power, the purges, and the climate of fear and intimidation commonplace in the top ranks of the organization." - Publishers Weekly "Janet Reitman spent five years researching and writing Inside Scientology: it was worth the wait… Inside Scientology is now the definitive account of key episodes in the movement’s history. For veterans of the campaign against Scientology’s excesses, Reitman’s book will become an essential resource. For the general public it will be a revelation." --Infinite Complacency Religion,General,History,United States,Biography & Autobiography,Religious,Cults,Scientology - United States,Scientology,United States - Religion

Developing Minds: Psychology, neoliberalism and power (Concepts for Critical Psychology) Elise Klein Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2017
Development policy makers and practitioners are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their ability to target ‘development’ interventions and the psychological domain is now a specific frontier of their interventional focus. This landmark study considers the problematic relationship between development and psychology, tracing the deployment of psychological knowledge in the production/reproduction of power relations within the context of neoliberal development policy and intervention. It examines knowledge production and implementation by actors of development policy such as the World Bank and the neo-colonial state - and ends by examining the proposition of a critical psychology for more emancipatory forms of development. The role of psychology in development studies remains a relatively unexplored area, with limited scholarship available. This important book aims to fill that gap by using critical psychology perspectives to explore the focus of the psychological domain of agency in development interventions. It will be essential reading for students, researchers, and policy makers from fields including critical psychology, social psychology, development studies and anthropology.

The Rise of New Media 1750–1850: Transatlantic Discourse and American Memory (The New Urban Atlantic) Julia Straub Palgrave Macmillan US Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, New York, NY, 2017
This monograph explores transatlantic literary culture by tracing the proliferation of ‘new media,’ such as the anthology, the literary history and the magazine, in the period between 1750 and 1850. The fast-paced media landscape out of which these publishing genres developed produced the need of a ‘memory of literature’ and a concomitant rhetoric of remembering strikingly similar to what today is called a cultural memory debate. Thus, rather than depicting the emergence of an American national literature, The Rise of New Media(1750–1850) combines impulses from media history, the history of print, the sociology of literature and canon theory to uncover nascent forms and genres of literary self-reflectivity and early stirrings of a canon debate in the Atlantic World. ** From the Back Cover This monograph explores transatlantic literary culture by tracing the proliferation of ‘new media,’ such as the anthology, the literary history and the magazine, in the period between 1750 and 1850. The Mediterranean Double-Cross System, 1941-1945 (Routledge Studies in Modern European History) Brett Lintott, Brett E. Lintott Routledge, an imprint of the Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2019
This book describes and analyzes the history of the Mediterranean "Double-Cross System" of the Second World War, an intelligence operation run primarily by British officers which turned captured German spies into double agents. Through a complex system of coordination, they were utilized from 1941 to the end of the war in 1945 to secure Allied territory through security and counter-intelligence operations, and also to deceive the German military by passing false information about Allied military planning and operations. The primary questions addressed by the book are: how did the double-cross-system come into existence; what effects did it have on the intelligence war and the broader military conflict; and why did it have those effects? The book contains chapters assessing how the system came into being and how it was organized, and also chapters which analyze its performance in security and counter-intelligence operations, and in deception. ** About the Author Brett Lintott received his PhD in history from the University of Toronto in 2015

Power, Sect and State in Syria: The Politics of Marriage and Identity amongst the Druze (Library of Modern Middle East Studies) A. Maria A. author (Amilla) Kastrinou I.B. Tauris; Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2016
The Syrian state’s rhetoric of Arab nationalism left little room for the official recognition of minority identities in pre-war Syria. Yet in practice, the state continually engaged with the Druze and other minorities to reinforce its legitimacy, often through cultural policy. Uncovering this neglected aspect of pre-war Syrian politics, Kastrinou explores the cultural politics of marriage in Syria, primarily among the Druze, to reveal how practical rituals of marriage inform sectarian and national identity formation. Challenging the assumed inherence of sectarianism and Druze endogamy, the book provides an historical and ethnographic account of political power and its relation to social control in Syria. It demonstrates the centrality of the body to Druze cosmology and how ritual performances of birth, marriage and death maintain and negotiate sectarian cohesion. Connecting these struggles to national and international politics, Kastrinou examines how both the Syrian government and the European Union have sponsored marriage-themed dance performances in Syria, each leveraging its cultural importance to legitimise their own policy goals. The book establishes marriage as a pervasive idiom for the construction of collective identity in Syria, which is appropriated by individuals, sects, states and intergovernmental organizations alike. Its conclusions are relevant to scholars of Middle East studies, sectarianism, anthropology and politics. ** Review 'This is a highly important contribution to the scholarship on pre-2011 Syria and Syrians. Kastrinou has crafted a very rich ethnographic account of the politics of marriage and identity among the Druze in an urban village outside of Damascus. She has also intersected this account with deep analysis of the relationships between the state and folklore as well as analyses of debates among Damascene intellectuals. Kastrinou is able to convey not only scholarly excellence but deep emotional commitment to the people she has lived, laughed and cried with.' - Professor Annika Rabo, Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University, 'This powerful study is valuable as a rare contemporary account of the Syrian Druze and, through its insights, how marriage becomes a central preoccupation in Syria. Kastrinou moves from intimate descriptions of an errant daughter's marriage to an expansive look at how power relations among Druze, the state, artists and intellectuals are expressed in the rituals and staged performances of marriages. Beyond seeing marriage as an important tool of elites, she shows us that sects and state seek validation through marriage idioms. Finally her discussion of sectarianism enlightens us about much that is going on in the Middle East today.' - Andrea B. Rugh, Adjunct Scholar, Middle East Institute, Washington, D.C., 'Maria Kastrinou's elegant and sophisticated ethnography provides a moving account of daily life and philosophy within a Syrian Druze community during the last years of peace before the current civil war.' - Professor Robert H. Layton, Department of Anthropology, Durham University, 'This is a wonderfully warm and evocative ethnography of a Druze community in a suburb of Damascus. Focussing specifically on acts of marriage, both as practiced in the community and as staged through state-sponsored cultural festivities, Kastrinou brings to life the formation and dynamics of power relations within and between the Druze religious community, the state, artists and intellectuals. This is a book of immense importance, bringing together anthropological concepts of cultural intimacy, kinship theories, and nuptial power relations as a form of governmentality. It makes a powerful contribution to our understanding of the political economy of social identities. ' - Dawn Chatty, Professor Emerita of Anthropology and Forced Migration, Refugee Studies Centre, University of Oxford About the Author A. Maria A. Kastrinou is a Lecturer in Social Anthropology at Brunel University London. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from Durham University and has conducted long-term fieldwork in Syria. Her research has been published in the journals History and Anthropology and Mediterranean Politics. Syria minorities State Middle East Druze marriage practices Despite the attention placed on the fate of minorities in Syria as a result of the conflict in the country, the Druze of Syria are a community about which very little is known. A. Maria A. Kastrinou's book offers a remedy for this situation through an examination of marriage practices and traditions. In doing so, she locates and analyses those contentious arenas in which local religious communities, authoritarian state policies and agents of neo‐liberal globalisation converge and collide, thus offering a nuanced picture of the social and political struggles in contemporary Syria. It is through this original and unusual perspective that she highlights the formation and dynamics of power relations within and between the Druze religious community, the Syrian state and middle‐class intellectuals. By showing how marriage practices, rather than being homogenous and traditional, are dynamic and subject to change depending on the socio‐political or cultural context, Kastrinou makes this book relevant for those involved in the study of sociology, anthropology, politics, gender and Middle East studies. Capital and Convict : Race, Region, and Punishment in Post–Civil War America Henry Kamerling University of Virginia Press, Lightning Source Inc. (Tier 3), Charlottesville, 2017
<p><p>Both in the popular imagination and in academic discourse, North and South are presented as fundamentally divergent penal systems in the aftermath of the Civil War, a difference mapped onto larger perceived cultural disparities between the two regions. The South’s post Civil War embrace of chain gangs and convict leasing occupies such a prominent position in the nation’s imagination that it has come to represent one of the region’s hallmark differences from the North. The regions are different, the argument goes, because they punish differently.</p> <p> <i>Capital and Convict</i> challenges this assumption by offering a comparative study of Illinois’s and South Carolina’s formal state penal systems in the fifty years after the Civil War. Henry Kamerling argues that although punishment was racially inflected both during Reconstruction and after, shared, nonracial factors defined both states' penal systems throughout this period. The similarities in the lived experiences of inmates in both states suggest that the popular focus on the racial characteristics of southern punishment has shielded us from an examination of important underlying factors that prove just as central—if not more so—in shaping the realities of crime and punishment throughout the United States.</p></p>

Thinking Things Through: An Introduction to Philosophical Issues and Achievements (A Bradford Book) Clark N. Glymour A Bradford Book, MIT Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2015
The second edition of a unique introductory text, offering an account of the logical tradition in philosophy and its influence on contemporary scientific disciplines.Thinking Things Through offers a broad, historical, and rigorous introduction to the logical tradition in philosophy and its contemporary significance. It is unique among introductory philosophy texts in that it considers both the historical development and modern fruition of a few central questions. It traces the influence of philosophical ideas and arguments on modern logic, statistics, decision theory, computer science, cognitive science, and public policy. The text offers an account of the history of speculation and argument, and the development of theories of deductive and probabilistic reasoning. It considers whether and how new knowledge of the world is possible at all, investigates rational decision making and causality, explores the nature of mind, and considers ethical theories. Suggestions for reading, both historical and contemporary, accompany most chapters. This second edition includes four new chapters, on decision theory and causal relations, moral and political theories, “moral tools” such as game theory and voting theory, and ethical theories and their relation to real-world issues. Examples have been updated throughout, and some new material has been added. It is suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate classes in philosophy, and as an ancillary text for students in computer science and the natural sciences.

The Rise of New Media 1750–1850: Transatlantic Discourse and American Memory (The New Urban Atlantic) Julia Straub (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan US Palgrave Macmillan, The New Urban Atlantic, 1st edition 2017, New York, 2017
Thus, rather than depicting the emergence of an American national literature, __The Rise of New Media(1750–1850)__ combines impulses from media history, the history of print, the sociology of literature and canon theory to uncover nascent forms and genres of literary self-reflectivity and early stirrings of a canon debate in the Atlantic World.

Education in Post-Conflict Transition: The Politicization of Religion in School Textbooks (Palgrave Studies in Religion, Politics, and Policy) Gorana Ognjenovic; Jasna Jozelić; Springer International Publishing Palgrave Macmillan Springer [distributor, Palgrave Studies in Religion, Politics, and Policy Ser, New York : Secaucus, Oct. 2017
This book offers vivid insights into policies of religious education in schools since the series of wars in former Yugoslavia in the 1990's. It traces the segregation among members of different ethnic groups in Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia, which has never been greater or more systematic. It aims to be a necessary step in understanding the origins of this systematic segregation and how it is reproduced in educational practice, asserting that the politicization of religion in the school textbooks is one of the motors responsible for the ongoing ethnic segregation. It also deals with complex aspects of this issue, such as the general situation of religion in the different countries, the social position of churches, the issues of gender, the reconciliation after the Yugoslav Wars, and the integration of the EU. ** Review “This is an important and timely book, describing and discussing the role of religion in school education within most of the successor states of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. It provides important insights into the ways by which religions are sought to be used in molding ethnic and cultural identities. The book documents and discusses the transitions from an almost absolutistic secularism of the former federal republic in the early post- World War II, to a process where churches and religious communities have now come to play dominant roles within the separate successor states, including through the religious education in schools. It will be an important source for contemporary discussions of the role of diverse religions within society and therefore of general importance beyond the successor states of former Yugoslavia.” (Asbjørn Eide, Professor Emeritus, Former Director of the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, former Chairman of the United Nation’s Working Group on Minorities) “The projected book offers vivid insights into the specific policies of religious education in schools…it treats the complex context and deals with aspects such as the general situation of religion in the different countries, the social position of churches, gender issues, reconciliation after the Yugoslav wars, and EU integration. With its qualitative and quantitative approaches, it is a methodological innovative study… Alas, this is not a common knowledge in the more secular “West”…the project brings about new questions and new answers in a skilful manner... Generally, each chapter offers an innovative potential… The chapters are solid research studies written as state of the art…this third title distinguishes itself by a new focus, namely on the sensible area of education in its broader context, and as such deserves attention” (Katrin Boeckh, Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, University of Regensburg, Germany) “Religion has been identified as a key factor in the processes of transitional justice and reconciliation among Yugoslav successor states, especially given its role in identity formation and nation (re)building. This timely volume considers the educational changes across the region and offers valuable insights into the ways public schools have become not only the sites of religious instruction but also spaces for sowing the seeds of divisive identity politics. The combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches enriches the volume's assessment of specific social and political conditions that have allowed such religious grip over school curricula and exposes the ways in which religions act as accomplices to political interests rather than serve the educational benefits of children.” (Amila Buturovic, Professor of Religious Studies and Humanities, York University, Canada) “A comprehensive set of ethnographic, comparative pedagogical studies of religious education in most of the Yugoslav successor states (Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia). These extraordinary essays not only present how religious education in public schools had to be reconstructed following radical political change but are instructive for European and other societies engaged with the new realities of multi-religious environments.” (Kurt Anders Richards, Professor of Theology, Abraham Centre, University of Dallas, USA) From the Back Cover This book offers vivid insights into policies of religious education in schools since the series of wars in former Yugoslavia in the 1990's. Apophasis and Pseudonymity in Dionysius the Areopagite: "No Longer I" (Oxford Early Christian Studies) Charles M. Stang OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2012
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. This book examines the writings of an early sixth-century Christian mystical theologian who wrote under the name of a convert of the apostle Paul, Dionysius the Areopagite. This 'Pseudo'-Dionysius is famous for articulating a mystical theology in two parts: a sacramental and liturgical mysticism embedded in the context of celestial and ecclesiastical hierarchies, and an austere, contemplative regimen in which one progressively negates the divine names in hopes of soliciting union with the 'unknown God' or 'God beyond being.' Charles M. Stang argues that the pseudonym and the influence of Paul together constitute the best interpretive lens for understanding the Corpus Dionysiacum [CD]. Stang demonstrates how Paul animates the entire corpus, and shows that the influence of Paul illuminates such central themes of the CD as hierarchy, theurgy, deification, Christology, affirmation (kataphasis) and negation (apophasis), dissimilar similarities, and unknowing. Most importantly, Paul serves as a fulcrum for the expression of a new theological anthropology, an 'apophatic anthropology.' Dionysius figures Paul as the premier apostolic witness to this apophatic anthropology, as the ecstatic lover of the divine who confesses to the rupture of his self and the indwelling of the divine in Gal 2:20: 'it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.' Building on this notion of apophatic anthropology, the book forwards an explanation for why this sixth-century author chose to write under an apostolic pseudonym. Stang argues that the very practice of pseudonymous writing itself serves as an ecstatic devotional exercise whereby the writer becomes split in two and thereby open to the indwelling of the divine. Pseudonymity is on this interpretation integral and internal to the aims of the wider mystical enterprise. Thus this book aims to question the distinction between 'theory' and 'practice' by demonstrating that negative theology-often figured as a speculative and rarefied theory regarding the transcendence of God-is in fact best understood as a kind of asceticism, a devotional practice aiming for the total transformation of the Christian subject.

Globalization and Inequality Elhanan Helpman Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2018
One of the world’s leading experts on international trade explains that we must look beyond globalization to explain rising inequality. Globalization is not the primary cause of rising inequality. This may come as a surprise. Inequality within nations has risen steadily in recent decades, at a time when countries around the world have eased restrictions on the movement of goods, capital, and labor. Many assume a causal relationship, which has motivated opposition to policies that promote freer trade. Elhanan Helpman shows, however, in this timely study that this assumption about the effects of globalization is more myth than fact. Globalization and Inequality guides us through two decades of research about the connections among international trade, offshoring, and changes in income, and shows that the overwhelming conclusion of contemporary research is that globalization is responsible for only a small rise in inequality. The chief causes remain difficult to pin down, though technological developments favoring highly skilled workers and changes in corporate and public policies are leading suspects. As Helpman makes clear, this does not mean that globalization creates no problems. Critics may be right to raise concerns about such matters as cultural autonomy, child labor, and domestic sovereignty. But if we wish to curb inequality while protecting what is best about an interconnected world, we must start with a clear view of what globalization does and does not do and look elsewhere to understand our troubling and growing divide. ** Publisher: Harvard University Press Compositor: Windfall Software Cover 1 Title Page 4 Copyright 5 Dedication 6 Contents 8 Preface 10 Introduction 16 1.
