Native Languages of the Americas : Volume 1 Harry Hoijer (auth.), Thomas A. Sebeok (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1976, PT, 2013
Thirteen of the chapters that comprise the contents of this first volume of Native Languages of the A mericas were originally commissioned by the undersigned in his capacity as Editor of the fourteen volume series (1963-1976), Current Trends in Linguistics. All appeared, in 1973, under Part Three of the quadripartite Vol. 10, subtitled Linguistics in North America. Two additional chaplers are being held over for the volume to follow shortly, devoted to Central and South American lan guages and linguistics, where they more appropriately belong. A fourteenth chapter, on the" Historiography of native North A merican linguistics," was written similarly by invitation, for Vol. 13, subtitled Historiography of Linguistics, published in 1975. Both Volumes 10 and 13 were jointly financed by the United States National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities, with an enhancing contribution to the former by the Canada Council. The generosity of these funding agencies was, of course, previously acknowledged in my respective Editor's Introductions to the two books mentioned, but cannot be repeated too often: without their welcome and timely assistance, the global project could scarcely have been realized on so comprehensive a scale. The Current Trends in Linguistics series was a long-term venture of Mouton Publishers, of The Hague, under the imaginative in-house direction of Peter de Rid der. Various spin-offs were foreseen, and some of them happily realized. Erscheinungsdatum: 27.04.2013

The Dopamine Receptors || || Front_matter Neve, Kim A.; Neve, Rachael L. Humana Press : Imprint: Humana Press, 10.1007/978-1-4757-2635-0, 1997
Seven years after the cloning of the rat dopamine D receptor, and four 2 years after the cloning of the last mammalian dopamine receptor identified to date, this seems to be an excellent time to put together the present The Dopamine Receptors volume ofthis series, The Receptors. There has been time for considerable characterization of the novel receptor subtypes, and new, exciting lines of research from the molecular to the behavioral levels are taking shape. We asked the contributors to The Dopamine Receptors to follow the superb example set by the previous volumes in this series by writing compre hensive, historical reviews that will comprise an essential resource for nonspe cialists and newcomers to the dopamine receptor field, while at the same time providing up-to-date summaries of the most active areas of research. It is difficult these days to write about receptors without addressing the issue of receptor nomenclature. For dopamine receptors, valid arguments can be made for a system in which the subtypes are classified as belonging to the Dl or D2 classes, with letters assigned in the order of cloning (D A, D, D A, 1 18 2 D, Dc). We decided, however, that common usage counts for something, and 28 2 chose to use D, D, and D for the D2-like receptors because these names are 2 3 4 nearly unanimously used in the literature.

Genetic Immunization || || Front_matter Bona, Constantin A.; Bot, Adrian I. Springer London, Limited, 10.1007/978-1-4757-3163-7, 2000
Wolf's discovery demonstrating that a reporter gene is expressed in myocytes subsequent to injection of naked DNA, was exploited by immunologists and vaccinologists to develop a new generation of vaccines. This observation galvanized the research and in a short lapse of time, an oceanic volume of knowledge has been accumulated. The research carried out in a variety of animal models showed the efficacy of genetic immunization against viruses, bacteria, and some parasites by the ability to induce a strong priming effect resulting from long-lasting persistence of plasmid as episomes. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that newborn or infant immune unresponsiveness to classical vaccines can be corrected by genetic immunization. The applications of genetic immunization for prophylaxis of infections was extended to immunotherapy, namely, cancerous, auto immune, and allergic diseases. Immunologists have provided pertinent information on the cellular basis of the immune responses elicited by genetic immunization, and molecular biologists have established the molecular basis of intrinsic adjuvant properties of plasmids.

An Introduction to Copulas Roger B. Nelsen (auth.) Springer New York : Imprint : Springer, Lecture notes in statistics (Springer-Verlag), New York, NY, 1999
Copulas are functions that join multivariate distribution functions to their one-dimensional margins. The study of copulas and their role in statistics is a new but vigorously growing field. In this book the student or practitioner of statistics and probability will find discussions of the fundamental properties of copulas and some of their primary applications. The applications include the study of dependence and measures of association, and the construction of families of bivariate distributions. With nearly a hundred examples and over 150 exercises, this book is suitable as a text or for self-study. The only prerequisite is an upper level undergraduate course in probability and mathematical statistics, although some familiarity with nonparametric statistics would be useful. Knowledge of measure-theoretic probability is not required. Roger B. Nelsen is Professor of Mathematics at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. He is also the author of "Proofs Without Words: Exercises in Visual Thinking," published by the Mathematical Association of America.

Lie Groups Beyond an Introduction || Anthony W. Knapp (auth.) Birkhäuser, 10.1007/97, 1996
Fifty years ago Claude Chevalley revolutionized Lie theory by pub lishing his classic Theory of Lie Groups I. Before his book Lie theory was a mixture of local and global results. As Chevalley put it,'This limitation was probably necessary as long as general topology was not yet sufficiently well elaborated to provide a solid base for a theory in the large. These days are now passed:'Indeed, they are passed because Chevalley's book changed matters. Chevalley made global Lie groups into the primary objects of study. In his third and fourth chapters he introduced the global notion of ana lytic subgroup, so that Lie subalgebras corresponded exactly to analytic subgroups. This correspondence is now taken as absolutely standard, and any introduction to general Lie groups has to have it at its core. Nowadays'local Lie groups'are a thing of the past; they arise only at one point in the development, and only until Chevalley's results have been stated and have eliminated the need for the local theory. But where does the theory go from this point? Fifty years after Cheval ley's book, there are clear topics: E. Cartan's completion ofW. Killing's work on classifying complex semisimple Lie algebras, the treatment of finite-dimensional representations of complex semisimple Lie algebras and compact Lie groups by Cartan and H. Weyl, the structure theory begun by Cartan for real semisimple Lie algebras and Lie groups, and harmonic analysis in the setting of semisimple groups as begun by Cartan and Weyl.

Biomaterials : An Introduction Joon B. Park, Roderic S. Lakes (auth.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 10.1007/97, 1992
This book is intended as a general introduction to the uses of artificial materials in the human body for the purposes of aiding healing, correcting deformities, and restoring lost function. It is an outgrowth of an undergraduate course for senior students in biomedical engineering, and it is offered as a text to be used in such courses. Topics include biocompatibility, techniques to minimize cor rosion or other degradation of implant materials, principles of materials science as it relates to the use of materials in the body, and specific uses of materials in various tissues and organs. It is expected that the student will have successively completed elementary courses in the mechanics of deformable bodies and in anatomy and physiology, and preferably also an introductory course in materials science prior to undertaking a course in biomaterials. Many quantitative examples are included as exercises for the engineering student. We recognize that many of these involve unrealistic simplifications and are limited to simple mechanical or chemical aspects of the implant problem. We offer as an apology the fact that biomaterials engineering is still to a great extent an empirical discipline that is complicated by many unknowns associated with the human body. In recognition of that fact, we have endeavored to describe both the successes and the failures in the use of materials in the human body. Also included are many photographs and illustrations of implants and devices as an aid to visualization.

[Fundamental and Applied Catalysis] Surface Chemistry and Catalysis || Ronald Mason (auth.), Albert F. Carley, Philip R. Davies, Graham J. Hutchings, Michael S. Spencer (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 10.1007/97, 2002
In 2001 Wyn Roberts celebrated both his 70th birthday and 50 years of working in surface science, to use the term "surface science" in its broadest meaning. This book aims to mark the anniversary with a contribution of lasting value, something more than the usual festschrift issue of a relevant journal. The book is divided into three sections: Surface Science, Model Catalysts and Catalysis, topics in which Wyn has always had interests. The authors for each chapter were chosen from some of the many eminent scientists who have worked with Wyn in various ways and are all internationally acknowledged as leaders in their field. The authors have produced authoritative reviews of their own specialties which together result in a book with an unrivalled combination of breadth and depth exploring the most recent developments in surface chemistry and catalysis.

upload/bibliotik/L/L. C. Grove, C. T. Benson - Finite Reflection Groups (1985) [978-1-4757-1869-0].pdf
GTM99-Finite Reflection Groups1985 L. C. Grove, C. T. Benson (auth.) Springer New York : Imprint : Springer, 2, 1985
Chapter 1 introduces some of the terminology and notation used later and indicates prerequisites. Chapter 2 gives a reasonably thorough account of all finite subgroups of the orthogonal groups in two and three dimensions. The presentation is somewhat less formal than in succeeding chapters. For instance, the existence of the icosahedron is accepted as an empirical fact, and no formal proof of existence is included. Throughout most of Chapter 2 we do not distinguish between groups that are'geo metrically indistinguishable,'that is, conjugate in the orthogonal group. Very little of the material in Chapter 2 is actually required for the sub sequent chapters, but it serves two important purposes: It aids in the development of geometrical insight, and it serves as a source of illustrative examples. There is a discussion offundamental regions in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 provides a correspondence between fundamental reflections and funda mental regions via a discussion of root systems. The actual classification and construction of finite reflection groups takes place in Chapter 5. where we have in part followed the methods of E. Witt and B. L. van der Waerden. Generators and relations for finite reflection groups are discussed in Chapter 6. There are historical remarks and suggestions for further reading in a Post lude.
