lgli/Innovations in Psychological Anthropology (2024).pdf
Innovations in Psychological Anthropology Rebecca Lester (editor) Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, NY, 2024
This volume offers a bold and long-overdue intervention into the field of psychological anthropology. It asks how scholars might both constructively destabilize old frameworks borne from the field’s complex past and seed innovative new engagements in order to chart ethical, responsible, and constructive ways forward. The contributions cover such topics as white supremacy and the production of knowledge, new perspectives on the “disabled” mind, the importance of ethnographic refusal, silence in narrative, and the racialization of therapeutic methods. This timely book seeks to reinvigorate the field and lay groundwork for a new bridge between the subdiscipline and the wider anthropological community. It is an ideal text for courses in anthropology, psychology, and the wider social sciences and humanities.

lgli/Helmut Wautischer - Tribal Epistemologies (2020, Routledge).pdf
Tribal Epistemologies : Essays in the Philosophy of Anthropology Helmut Wautischer Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Routledge revivals, Place of publication not identified, 2020
First published in 1998, this collection of ten essays transforms our understanding of both the role of philosophical anthropology in modern world philosophy and the origins of tribal knowledge in their relation to contemporary assessments of cognition and consciousness. Ethnographic data from geographically distant cultures - such as the Maori of New Zealand, the Fore of New Guinea, the Sea Nomads of the Andaman, the Cowlitz of North America, the Maya, Australian Aborigines, Siberian Shamans - are carefully crafted toward an empirical basis for discussing a variety of phenomena traditional labelled in Western thought as transcendent or metaphysical. This anthology is a valuable source of information relevant for any theories of knowledge and a solid challenge for reductionist models of consciousness. The essays enhance our recognition and appreciation of fundamental similarities as well as differences in world views and cultural perspectives related to knowledge claims. This anthology illustrates unplumbed depths of human consciousness, reveals experiential understandings beyond linguistic thought, and stands aside from the view that behaviour and intelligence can be understood by deterministic principles. This volume of essays should be read with stereoscopic vision: one lens focusing on the rich ethnographic material of folk societies, the other focusing on the wider awareness of how we come to know what we know. It features specialists in philosophy, ethnology and comparative sociology, comparative religion, cross-cultural psychology, physical anthropology, environmental and marine scientists, Indian affairs, anthropology, comparative literature, shamanism and theoretical biology. These contributors explore issues including individuality in relational cultures, Maori epistemology, shamanistic knowledge and cosmology and images of conduct, character and personhood in the Native American tradition.

Handbook of Multicultural Mental Health : Assessment and Treatment of Diverse Populations edited by Israel Cuéllar, Freddy A. Paniagua Academic Press, Incorporated, Elsevier Ltd., San Diego, 2000
Clinicians and mental health practitioners are regularly called upon to treat patients of diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Not only do these patients differ from Anglos in culture and language, but also in customs, beliefs, values, and practices. Understanding these differences is vital to performing an accurate diagnosis/assessment of psychopathology as well as in determining an effective treatment regimen.<br>This book provides vital information to clinicians worldwide in bettering their treatment of diverse populations. Each chapter identifies relevant cultural variables specific to each racial/ethnic group, along with ethnocultural measures and their relevant psychometric properties. Part 1 presents introductory material on the definition of mental illness and pathological behavior in differing cultures, epidemiological data on the prevalence of different disorders between differing population groups, culture specific beliefs (e.g. hexes), and the influence of culture on treatment. Part 2 discusses assessment issues including how specific measures (Rorschach, MMPI, etc.) are best interpreted with different population groups, and the existence and use of ethnocultural specific measures. Part 3 discusses assessment and treatment of specific population groups (e.g., Indians, Asians, Latinos, etc.).

Culture in Psychology Corinne Squire Taylor & Francis Group, 2011
Culture in Psychology breaks new ground by attempting to understand the complexity and specificity of cultural identities today. It rejects the idea that Western culture is a standard, or that any culture is homogenous and stable. Equally, it rejects the notion that culture is a mechanism that enhances reproductive fitness. Instead, it alerts psychologists to the many forms of 'foreignness' that research should address and to alliances psychology can make with other disciplines such as anthropology, feminism and psychoanalysis. Part one explores the origins of the new 'cultural psychology' in social change movements, in fields such as ethnography and cultural studies, and as a response to evolutionary psychology. Part two looks at how people create and sustain the meanings of social categories of 'class', gender, 'race' and ethnicity, while the third part examines the interaction between written and visual representations in popular culture and everyday lived culture. The final part examines the idiosyncratic significance cultural forms have for individuals and their unconscious meanings.

Culture and Panic Disorder edited by Devon E. Hinton and Byron J. Good Stanford, Calif.: Stanford University Press, Stanford University Press, Stanford, Calif, 2009
Psychiatric classifications created in one culture may not be as universal as we assume, and it is difficult to determine the validity of a classification even in the culture in which it was created. Culture and Panic Disorder explores how the psychiatric classification of panic disorder first emerged, how medical theories of this disorder have shifted through time, and whether or not panic disorder can actually be diagnosed across cultures. In this breakthrough volume a distinguished group of medical and psychological anthropologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and historians of science provide ethnographic insights as they investigate the presentation and generation of panic disorder in various cultures. The first available work with a focus on the historical and cross-cultural aspects of panic disorders, this book presents a fresh opportunity to reevaluate Western theories of panic that were formerly taken for granted.

Culture and Identity : The History, Theory, and Practice of Psychological Anthropology Charles Lindholm Oneworld Publications, Revised, PT, 2007
In this revised edition, Lindholm introduces the field of psychological anthropology, tracing the growth of the field, interweaving perspectives from anthropology, psychology, and sociology, and applying the insights gained to an understanding of daily life in the West. Unlike other texts, Culture and Identity deals with contemporary issues, includes important theorists that have previously been ignored, and covers contemporary topics such as object relations, identity, emotions, cognition, idealized relationships, and the psychology of groups.

Reconnaissances Needham, Rodney University of Toronto Press, 1980 dec 31
The reconnaissances of this book are ventures in the deep analysis of the unconscious as testified to by world ethnography. The topics examined are the image of the half-man, the operation of analogical classification, and ideas about sovereign powers to which men conceive themselves as subject. In each case, analysis brings out remarkable uniformities on a global scale. These cultural similarities are not correlated with particular social forms or linguistic traditions, and in their characteristics features they are not the products of deliberate cogitation or creative invention. The formal attributes they share are that they are premised on binary opposition and symmetry. The argument is that, intrinsically, the social facts in question are spontaneous products of unconscious ‘cerebrational vectors,’ and that they are archetypes of human experience.<BR>The three studies included in the volume, originally delivered as lectures at the University of Toronto in 1978, form an important sequel to Needham’s previous book, Primordial Characters, and further develop certain of its analytical themes and substantive issues.

lgli/The Hidden Powers of Ritual - The Journey of a Lifetime - Bradd Shore - The MIT Press - 2023.epub
<<The>> hidden powers of ritual the journey of a lifetime Shore, Bradd The Mit Press, 1, 2023
An illuminating overview of the development, benefits, and importance of ritual in everyday life, written by a leading cognitive anthropologist. The Hidden Powers of Ritual is an engaging introduction to ritual studies that presents ritual as an evolved form of human behavior of almost unimaginable significance to our species. Every day across the globe, people gather to share meals, brew caffeinated beverages, or honor their ancestors. In this book, Bradd Shore, a respected anthropologist, reaches beyond familiar “big-R” rituals to present life’s humbler, overshadowed moments, exploring everything from the Balinese pelebon to baseball to family Zoom sessions in the age of Covid to the sobering reenactment rituals surrounding the Moore’s Ford lynchings. In each ritual, Shore shows how our capacity to ritualize behavior is a remarkable part of the human story. Encompassing both the commonly unlabeled “interaction rituals” studied by sociologists and the symbolically elaborated sacred rituals of religious studies, Shore organizes his conception around detailed case studies drawn from international research and personal experience, weaving scholarship with a memoir of a life encompassed by ritual. A probing exploration that matches breadth with accessibility, The Hidden Powers of Ritual is a provocative contribution to ritual theory that will appeal to a wide range of readers curious about why these unique repetitive acts matter in our lives.

This "cultural-developmental approach" is a multifaceted, flexible, and dynamic way to conceptualize theory and research that is in step with the cultural and global realities of human development in the 21st century.

If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways. Daniel Quinn Hanover, N.H.: Steerforth Press, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), Hanover, N.H., 2007
The award-winning author of Ishmael shares his advice on how to challenge your own thought processes so you can see the world in new, creative, revolutionary ways In Ishmael, Daniel Quinn offered new ways of seeing and understanding human history, and our collective future. His message was transformative for millions of people, and Ishmael continues to attract tens of thousands of new readers each year. Subsequent works, such as The Story of B and My Ishmael, expanded upon his insights and teachings, but only now does he finally tackle the one question he has been asked hundreds of times but has never taken on: “How do you do what you do?” In If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways Quinn elucidates for readers the methods behind his own thought processes, challenging and ultimately empowering them to view the world for themselves in creative, perhaps even revolutionary ways. If They Give You Lined Paper, Write Sideways also includes Quinn's never-before-published essays “The New Renaissance” and “Our Religions.” There is a scientific consensus that global warming is approaching a tipping point beyond no return faster than had previously been predicted. Quinn has long portrayed humans as “a species of beings, which, while supposedly rational, are destroying the very planet they live on.” So what are we to do? There has never been a plan for the future—and there never will be. But something extraordinary will happen in the next two or three decades; the people of our culture will learn to live sustainably—or not. Either way, it will be extraordinary. The sooner we understand this reality, the greater the chances that human society will transform itself so that the human race might have a future.

Psychology and Cognitive Archaeology : An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Study of the Human Mind Tracy B. Henley (editor), Matt J. Rossano (editor) Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, 1, 2021
__Psychology and Cognitive Archaeology__ demonstrates the potential of using cognitive archaeology framing to explore key issues in contemporary psychology and other behavioral sciences. This edited volume features psychologists exploring archaeological data concerning specific themes such as: the use of tools, our child-rearing practices, our expressions of gender and sexuality, our sleep patterns, the nature of warfare, cultural practices, and the origins of religion. Other chapters touch on cognitive archaeological methods, the history of evolutionary approaches in psychology, and relevant philosophical considerations to further illustrate the interdisciplinary potential between archaeology and psychology. As a complementary counterpoint, the book also includes an archaeologist’s perspective on these same topical matters, as well as robust introductory and concluding thoughts by the editors. This book will be an illuminating read for students and scholars of psychology (particularly theoretical, social, cognitive and evolutionary psychology), as well as philosophy, archaeology, and anthropology.

Developmental Aspects In Learning To Write (studies In Writing) Liliana Tolchinsky, L. Tolchinsky, Liliana Tolchinsky Landsmann Springer; Kluwer Academic Publishers, Springer Nature, Dordrecht, 2012
Developmental Perspectives on Writing LILIANA TOLCHINSKY University of Barcelona, Spain The advent of the sixties is considered a crucial moment for the discovery of writing as an object worthy of intellectual inquiry (Havelock, 1986). A number of books, which came out in that decade, set the stage for this turn-to-writing. One of them was the Preface to Plato by Eric Havelock. This book, published in 1963, was to become a milestone in the discovery of literacy as a field of research (Bockheimer, 1998). Havelock (1986) referred to three more works that came out at the same time, and Bockheimer suggested adding other publications; for example La pensee sau vage by Levi Strauss (1962); The consequences of literacy by Jack Goody and Ian Watt (1963) and La geste et la parole by Laroi -Gourham (1964/65). The authors of these books were anthropologists, philosophers and sociologists who coincided in highlighting the significance of writing for human development and, more specifically, for language development. They maintained that many insti tutions, ideas, beliefs, opinions and convictions of the Western world were a by product of an 'alphabetized mind'. Writing was for them one of the pillars of subjec tivity, responsible for the rise of consciousness, for our conception of words and for our notion of true and false. Amazingly linguists, psycho linguists, psychologists and educators did not participate in the turn-to-writing. The firstl, did not give any atten- 1 There were some exceptions to this generalization. A History of “Relevance” in Psychology (Palgrave Studies in the Theory and History of Psychology) Wahbie Long Palgrave Macmillan Ltd, Palgrave Studies in the Theory and History of Psychology (PSTHP), 1, 2016
Palgrave Studies in the Theory and History of Psychology Series Editor: Jack Martin, Burnaby Mouthain Endowed Professor of Psychology, Simon Fraser University, Canada This book represents the first attempt to historicise and theorise appeals for ‘relevance’ in psychology. It argues that the persistence of questions about the ‘relevance’ of psychology derives from the discipline’s terminal inability to define its subject matter, its reliance on a socially disinterested science to underwrite its knowledge claims, and its consequent failure to address itself to the needs of a rapidly changing world. The chapters go on to consider the ‘relevance’ debate within South African psychology, by critically analysing discourse of forty-five presidential, keynote and opening addresses delivered at annual national psychology congresses between 1950 and 2011, and observes how appeals for ‘relevance’ were advanced by reactionary, progressive and radical psychologists alike. The book presents, moreover, the provocative thesis that the revolutionary quest for ‘social relevance’ that began in the 1960s has been supplanted by an ethic of ‘market relevance’ that threatens to isolate the discipline still further from the anxieties of broader society. With powerful interest groups continuing to co-opt psychologists without relent, this is a development that only psychologists of conscience can arrest. .

This is the first book to both question that monopoly and suggest a broad range of particular alternatives. Psychologists, philosophers, biologists, anthropologists, and others offer different methods for combining psychology and evolution. They recommend specific changes to evolutionary psychology using a wide variety of theoretical assumptions. In addition, some essays analyze the underpinnings of the dominant method, relate it to the context of evolutionary and psychological theory and to general philosophy of science, and discuss how to test approaches to evolutionary psychology. The aim of this collection is not to reject evolutionary psychology but to open up new vistas which students and researchers can use to ensure that evolutionary psychology continues to thrive.

Pan Africanism And Psychology In Decolonial Times Palgrave Macmillan 2022 Shose Kessi, Floretta Boonzaier, Babette Stephanie Gekeler Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Pan-African psychologies, 1st ed. 2021, Cham, 2021
"This book offers an incisively critical interrogation of the often understated centrality and excesses of psychology as a discipline, practice and technology in the sins of inequality, unequal encounters, conquest, domination, violence and violation; while simultaneously pointing the reader to emergent promising alternative perspectives for the edification of the ideals of pan-Africanism and the elusive quest for an inclusive humanity." --Francis B. Nyamnjoh, Professor of Social Anthropology, University of Cape Town, South Africa "A necessary corrective to the persisting obfuscation of coloniality and scientific racism in mainstream psychology, this book is highly commended for picking up the unresolved questions of psychology and bringing disparate sources together with a view to catalyzing the transforming of a discipline that has proved recalcitrant. This book is rich with possibilities that if pursued, may contribute productively to the myriad challenges of decolonial times." --Professor Amina Mama, Kwame Nkrumah Chair: University of Ghana, Institute of African Studies, Professor in Gender, Sexuality & Women's Studies: University of California, Davis. USA This book explores the potential of Pan-African thought in contributing to advancing psychological research, theory and practice. Euro/American mainstream psychology has historically served the interests of a dominant western paradigm. Contemporary trends in psychological work have emerged as a direct result of the impact of violent histories of slavery, genocide and colonisation. Hence, this book proposes that psychology, particularly in its social forms, as a discipline centered on the relationship between mind and society, is well-placed to produce the critical knowledge and tools for imagining and promoting a just and equitable world. Shose Kessi is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Cape Town Floretta Boonzaier is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Cape Town and co-director of the Hub for Decolonial Feminist Psychologies in Africa Babette Stephanie Gekeler is Lecturer at the International Psychoanalytic University of Berlin

Shared Beliefs in a Society : Social Psychological Analysis Daniel Bar-Tal SAGE Publications, Incorporated, Sage Publications Inc., Thousand Oaks, Calif, 2000
...carefully argued, this book will have special appeal to graduate students, faculty, social psychologists (notably those yearning for Lewinian Approaches), and group-oriented sociologists. —Choice What kind of shared beliefs in a society are of importance to social systems? What functions do they fulfill? How are they informed and disseminated? What are the societal consequences of shared beliefs? All of these questions are addressed in this book in which Daniel Bar-Tal develops the notion of societal psychology, which he states can contribute a social-psychological perspective to the study of a wide range of social problems in a society. He shows how societal psychology can fulfill the promise of early social psychologists by directing attention to the societal and cultural contexts in which individuals live and by examining the reciprocal influence between these contexts and individuals. In this comprehensive volume, four themes of societal belief: patriotism, security, siege mentality, and deligitimization, are examined through well-defined examples and systematic analysis. Researchers, students and practitioners in social psychology, sociology, political science and anthropology will be stimulated and engaged by this important contribution to the field.

Heart- and Soul-Like Constructs across Languages, Cultures, and Epochs (Routledge Studies in Linguistics) Bert Peeters Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 1, 20190114
All languages and cultures appear to have one or more "mind-like" constructs that supplement the human body. Linguistic evidence suggests they all have a word for someone , and another word for body , but that doesn’t mean that whatever else makes up a human being (i.e. someone) apart from the body is the same everywhere. Nonetheless, the (Anglo) mind is often reified and thought of in universal terms. This volume adds to the literature that denounces such reification. It looks at Japanese, Longgu (an Oceanic language), Thai, and Old Norse-Icelandic, spelling out, in a culturally neutral Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM), how the "mind-like" constructs in these languages differ from the Anglo mind.

Our emotional make up : ethnopsychology and selfhood Vinciane Despret [Despret, Vinciane] Other Press Professional, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), [N.p.], 2021
Broken hearts, edgy nerves, tightened throats—our emotions grab and take hold of us. But if our emotions appear obvious to us, are they necessarily real or universal? This, of course, is what researchers in physiology and psychology assert, but they will ultimately be disappointed. Vinciane Despret sets out in this book to show how some of our emotions, precisely those we thought were a natural part of our make-up, do not exist unless they have been inscribed in our subjectivity through the mediation of culture. Emotions do not exist per se, but only within relations to others. Anthropologists and ethnologists often return from distant regions and remote islands with emotions unknown to their peers at home, and which can only be expressed in the tribal tongue they have learned. Following such discoveries, one should not be surprised to find that anger does not exist among the Uktus, and the Ikfalus have to teach fear to their children. One only has to consider the emotions of other cultures and traditions to recognize that they are human productions with wide and significant variations, like good manners. Our emotions, finally, represent the way that we see the world and try to make it our own.

lgli/Kristin Andrews - Do Apes Read Minds?: Toward a New Folk Psychology (MIT Press).pdf
Do Apes Read Minds?: Toward a New Folk Psychology (The MIT Press) Andrews, Kristin The MIT Press, MIT Press, Cambridge, Mass, 2012
An argument that as folk psychologists humans (and perhaps other animals) don't so much read minds as see one another as persons with traits, emotions, and social relations. By adulthood, most of us have become experts in human behavior, able to make sense of the myriad behaviors we find in environments ranging from the family home to the local mall and beyond. In philosophy of mind, our understanding of others has been largely explained in terms of knowing others' beliefs and desires; describing others' behavior in these terms is the core of what is known as folk psychology . In Do Apes Read Minds? Kristin Andrews challenges this view of folk psychology, arguing that we don't consider others' beliefs and desires when predicting most quotidian behavior, and that our explanations in these terms are often inaccurate or unhelpful. Rather than mindreading, or understanding others as receptacles for propositional attitudes, Andrews claims that folk psychologists see others first as whole persons with traits, emotions, and social relations. Drawing on research in developmental psychology, social psychology, and animal cognition, Andrews argues for a pluralistic folk psychology that employs different kinds of practices (including prediction, explanation, and justification) and different kinds of cognitive tools (including personality trait attribution, stereotype activation, inductive reasoning about past behavior, and generalization from self) that are involved in our folk psychological practices. According to this understanding of folk psychologywhich does not require the sophisticated cognitive machinery of second-order metacognition associated with having a theory of mindanimals (including the other great apes) may be folk psychologists, too.

Evidence-Based Psychological Practice With Ethnic Minorities: Culturally Informed Research and Clinical Strategies (Cultural, Racial, and Ethnic Psychology) Zane, Nolan W. S., editor; Bernal, Guillermo, editor; Leong, Frederick T. L., editor Washington, DC: American Psychological Association, American Psychological Association, Washington, DC, 2016
An essential component of evidence-based psychological practice (EBPP) is attending to the ethnocultural heritage of the client. However, relatively little research has been conducted on culturally- informed EBPP with ethnic minorities, especially research that satisfies rigorous methodological criteria. In this book, experts examine the reasons for this and suggest tangible strategies for conducting more impactful studies to promote culturally competent treatment. The chapters address critical research issues such as measurement and design/methodology, and inspiring examples show how EBPP can be tailored to meet the specific needs of ethnic minorities. This volume is an important step in reducing disparities and promoting effective mental health treatment for underserved populations. Theoretical Psychology : The Meeting of East and West A. C. Paranjpe (auth.) Springer Science & Business Media, Path in Psychology, Path in Psychology, 1, 1983
This book is an outcome of my bicultural experience as a student and teacher of psychology in India and North America. As a student in India, the psychology I learned in the classroom was totally Western in its perspective. A book on Indian economics, called Bharatfya Arthasastra, written by the late Pal)Q.it Dindayal Upadhyaya, inspired me to look into the sources of the Indian intellectual tradition for an indigenous perspective within the discipline of my training and research. The late Balsastri Hardas suggested K. K. Kolhatkar's Bharatfya Manasasastra, a book that translates and comments on Patanjali's Yoga sutras in Marathi, as a sourcebook of psychological concepts of Indian origin. My response to this initial exposure to Yoga as a system of psychology was one of bewilderment. Having been trained in psychology with Woodworth and Schlosberg's Experimental Psychology as the textbook of psychology, I could not comprehend how ideas so diverse as those of Patanjali and Woodworth and Schlosberg could be designated by a common labelpsychology! Obviously, it was necessary to sort out psychology's meaning in different sociocultural contexts, beginning with the most fundamental notions on which psychological concepts are based. This book represents an attempt to understand psychological concepts, especially those relating to consciousness and the self, as they developed in the different intellectual traditions and cultural contexts of India and the West. More than two decades have passed since I began the intellectual journey that brought me to the set of ideas presented here. Many teachers, friends, and well-wishers have encouraged me at various stages of this enterprise. Foremost among them are Professors

Handbook of Multicultural Mental Health : Assessment and Treatment of Diverse Populations Israel Cuellar (Editor), Freddy A. Paniagua (Editor) Academic Press, Incorporated, Elsevier Ltd., San Diego, 2000

Strickland, Cecil R. Reynolds (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Critical Issues in Neuropsychology, Critical Issues in Neuropsychology, 1, 2000
Historically, relatively few investigations in neuropsychology have been sensitive to the analysis of cultural variables. This handbook will assist the neuropsychologist interested in cultural competence and help increase understanding of the link between cultural competence in assessment and intervention and good treatment outcomes. The handbook authors provide an in-depth discussion of the current status of multicultural training in neuropsychology; specific information on diverse groups (age, gender, ethnicity, etc.), assessment instruments, and clinical populations (HIV infected, seizure disorders, brain injuries); and unique analysis of immigration patterns, forensics, and psychopharmacology. This volume is the first to summarize the cultural data available in neuropsychology. A valuable resource for clinical neuropsychologists, school psychologists and rehabilitation professionals.

The Oxford Handbook of Culture and Psychology (Oxford Library of Psychology) edited by Jaan Valsiner Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2012
The goal of cultural psychology is to explain the ways in which human cultural constructions -- for example, rituals, stereotypes, and meanings -- organize and direct human acting, feeling, and thinking in different social contexts. A rapidly growing, international field of scholarship, cultural psychology is ready for an interdisciplinary, primary resource. Linking psychology, anthropology, sociology, archaeology, and history, The Oxford Handbook of Culture and Psychology is the quintessential volume that unites the variable perspectives from these disciplines. Comprised of over fifty contributed chapters, this book provides a necessary, comprehensive overview of contemporary cultural psychology. Bridging psychological, sociological, and anthropological perspectives, one will find in this handbook: - A concise history of psychology that includes valuable resources for innovation in psychology in general and cultural psychology in particular - Interdisciplinary chapters including insights into cultural anthropology, cross-cultural psychology, culture and conceptions of the self, and semiotics and cultural connections - Close, conceptual links with contemporary biological sciences, especially developmental biology, and with other social sciences - A section detailing potential methodological innovations for cultural psychology By comparing cultures and the (often differing) human psychological functions occuring within them, The Oxford Handbook of Culture and Psychology is the ideal resource for making sense of complex and varied human phenomena.

The Dream in Islam : From Qur'anic Tradition to Jihadist Inspiration Iain R. Edgar Berghahn Books, Inc, Berghahn Books, New York, 2011
The war in the Middle East is marked by a lack of cultural knowledge on the part of the western forces, and this book deals with another, widely ignored element of Islam-the role of dreams in everyday life. The practice of using night dreams to make important life decisions can be traced to Middle Eastern dream traditions and practices that preceded the emergence of Islam. In this study, the author explores some key aspects of Islamic dream theory and interpretation as well as the role and significance of night dreams for contemporary Muslims. In his analysis of the Islamic debates surrounding the role of "true" dreams in historical and contemporary Islamic prophecy, the author specifically addresses the significance of Al-Qaeda and Taliban dream practices and ideology. Dreams of "heaven," for example, are often instrumental in determining Jihadist suicidal action, and "heavenly" dreams are also evidenced within other contemporary human conflicts such as Israel-Palestine and Kosovo-Serbia. By exploring patterns of dreams within this context, a cross-cultural, psychological, and experiential understanding of the role and significance of such contemporary critical political and personal imagery can be achieved. -- Product Description

Our Biosocial Brains : The Cultural Neuroscience of Bias, Power, and Injustice Michele K. Lewis - Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing, Lanham, 2020
"In Our Biosocial Brains, Michele Lewis underscores culture, brain, behavior, and social problems to advocate for a more inclusive cultural neuroscience. Traditional neuroscientists to date have not prioritized studying the impact of power, bias, and injustice on neural processing and the brain's perception of marginalized humans. Lewis explains current events, historical events, and scientific studies, in Our Biosocial Brains. Readers will be drawn to the relevancy of brain science to examples of injustices and social bias. Lewis also argues that incorporating non-western African-Centered Psychology is vital to diversifying research questions and diversifying interpretations of existing brain science, because African-Centered Psychology is not rooted in racist, classist, and exclusionary hegemonic methods. Lewis argues for attention to marginalized populations, regarding the impact of violence, disrespect, othering, slurs, environmental injustice, health, and general disregard on humans' brains and behavior. Using hundreds of peer-reviewed studies and original research, the author presents scientific studies that are integrated with sociocultural explanations to foster wider understanding of how our sociocultural world shapes our brains, and how our brains' responses influence how humans perceive and treat one another."--Publisher's website

Malinowski, Rivers, Benedict and Others: Essays on Culture and Personality (History of Anthropology, Volume 4) George W. Stocking Jr. (editor) The University of Wisconsin Press, History of Anthropology, 4, ., 1997
History of Anthropology is a series of annual volumes, inaugurated in 1983, each of which treats a theme of major importance in both the history and current practice of anthropological inquiry. Drawing its title from a poem of W. H. Auden's, the present volume, Malinowski, Rivers, Benedict, and Others (the fourth in the series) focuses on the emergence of anthropological interest in "culture and personality" during the 1920s and 1930s. It also explores the historical, cultural, literary, and biological background of major figures associated with the movement, including Bronislaw Manlinowski, Edward Sapir, Abram Kardiner, Ruth Benedict, Margaret Mead, and Gregory Bateson. Born in the aftermath of World War I, flowering in the years before and after World War II, severely attacked in the 1950s and 1960s, "culture and personality" was subsequently reborn as "psychological anthropology." Whether this foreshadows the emergence of a major anthropological subdiscipline (equivalent to cultural, social, biological, or linguistic anthropology) from the current welter of "adjectival" anthropologies remain to be seen. In the meantime, the essays collected in the volume may encourage a rethinking of the historical roots of many issues of current concern. Included in this volume are the contributions of Jeremy MacClancy, William C. Manson, William Jackson, Richard Handler, Regna Darnell, Virginia Yans-McLaughlin, James A. Boon, and the editor.

A'aisa's Gifts: A Study of Magic and the Self (Volume 13) (Studies in Melanesian Anthropology) MICHELE STEPHEN Berkeley: University of California Press, University of California Press, Berkeley, 1995
Filled with insight, provocative in its conclusions, A'aisa's Gifts is a groundbreaking ethnography of the Mekeo of Papua New Guinea and a valuable contribution to anthropological theory. Based on twenty years'fieldwork, this richly detailed study of Mekeo esoteric knowledge, cosmology, and self-conceptualizations recasts accepted notions about magic and selfhood. Drawing on accounts by Mekeo ritual experts and laypersons, this is the first book to demonstrate magic's profound role in creating the self. It also argues convincingly that dream reporting provides a natural context for self-reflection. In presenting its data, the book develops the concept of'autonomous imagination'into a new theoretical framework for exploring subjective imagery processes across cultures. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1996.Filled with insight, provocative in its conclusions, A'aisa's Gifts is a groundbreaking ethnography of the Mekeo of Papua New Guinea and a valuable contribution to anthropological theory. Cultural Psychology of Recursive Processes (Advances in Cultural Psychology: Constructing Human Development) edited by Zachary Beckstead, Mariela Orozco Information Age Publishing Inc.; Information Age Publishing, Advances in Cultural Psychology: Constructing Human Development, 2015
Cultural Psychology of Recursivity illustrates how recursivity, often neglected in the social sciences, can be an important concept for illuminating meaning-making processes. Recusrivity is a fascinating though abstract concept with a wide array of often incompatible definitions. Rooted in mathematics and linguistics, this book brings recursion and recursive processes to the foreground of psychological processes. One unifying claim among the diverse chapters in this book is that recursion and recursive processes are at the core of complex social and psychological processes. Recursion is bound up with the notion of re-turning, re-examining, re-flecting and circling back, and these processes allow for human beings to simultaneously distance themselves from the here-and-now settings (by imaging the past and future) while being immersed in them. The objective of this book is not simply to celebrate the complexity of human living, but to extend the notion of recursion, recursivity and recursive processes into the realm of social and psychological processes beyond the arenas in which these ideas have currently thrived. Cultural Psychology of Recursivity shows that in spite of the difficulty in defining recursivity, self-referencing (looping), transformation (generativity), complexity, and holism constitute its core characteristics and provide the basis for which authors in this book explore and elaborate this concept. Still, each contribution has its own unique take on recursivity and how it is applied to their phenomenon of investigation. Chapters in this book examine how recursive processes are related to and basic aspects of play and ritual, imitation, identity exploration, managing stigma, and commemorative practices. This book is intended for psychologists, sociologists, and mathematicians. Use of the book in post-graduate and graduate level of university teaching is expected in seminar format teaching occasions.

Multicultural Assessment : Principles, Applications, and Examples Richard Henry Dana (Jr.) Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Mahwah, N.J., 2005
<p>Psychologists throughout the world are being asked to assess an increasingly diverse clientele&#58; immigrants, refugees, second and third generations still influenced by different cultures and languages, and indigenous peoples now moving towards the mainstream. Most are ill-equipped by training and experience to understand, assess, and subsequently treat such clients competently and ethically. Virtually all agree on the need for culture-sensitive assessment, but it has proven difficult to provide adequate services, despite good intentions and funding. Too often, clients who may have different worldview and health-illness beliefs are marginalized.<p>For many reasons, standard assessment instruments designed, researched, and normed on a few groups in the United States--the MMPI-2, the Rorschach, and the TAT--are used as though they were universally applicable. Most busy practitioners have little time to investigate alternatives developed for use with one new group or another, focused on one issue or another, generally in a research context.<p>In this book, Richard Dana proposes a new model of multicultural assessment practice and points directions for future training and research. He presents general, culture-specific, and step-by-step instrument-specific guidelines for the use of the standard armamentarium with different groups. Throughout, he highlights exciting new interpretive possibilities the traditional tests offer that should be regularly exploited, but emphasizes the importance of recognizing psychometric limits. Four extended examples of the use of one or several instruments with a specific group offer concrete illustrations of the model in action.<p><i>Multicultural Assessment&#58; Principles, Applications, and Examples</i> constitutes an invaluable new resource for psychologists and for their students and trainees.<br></p>

Between Philosophy and Cultural Psychology (SpringerBriefs in Psychology and Cultural Developmental Science) Robert E. Innis Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer, Springer Nature, Cham, Switzerland, 2020
This Brief provides an in-depth discussion of five major points of intersection between philosophy and cultural psychology. The first chapter frames central analytical and normative threads, foregrounding the focal notion of thresholds of sense. The second chapter explores the nature of contexts, situations, and backgrounds of meaning-making following the lead of John Dewey, Ben-Ami Scharfstein, and Gernot Böhme. Chapter three examines the complementary analytical power of the semiotic resources developed in the work of Peirce, Bühler, and Cassirer. Chapter four shows the heuristic fertility and psychological bearing of Susanne Langer's feeling-based aesthetic model of minding. The final chapter establishes affectivation as the inescapable consequence of human beings giving life to themselves by giving life to signs. The Brief concludes with three commentaries from leading researchers in the area.   The chapters weave together interlocking themes: the nature of embodied perception, the variety of contexts and semiotic frameworks and their schematization of thresholds of meaning-making, the role of art and theories of imagination both in cultural psychology and in philosophy, and the centrality of feeling in all forms of meaning-making.  Between Philosophy and Cultural Psychology will be of interest to cognitive and cultural psychologists as well as researchers and upper-graduate students in philosophy and related psychology fields.

Алгебра совести Лефевр, Владимир Александрович Когито-Центр, М, Russia, 2003
Conscience is an essential human attribute. Nevertheless, in the construction of formal models of the subject it is customarily left outside the framework of theoretical analysis. The Algebra of Conscience, whose first edition appeared in 1982, was the first specialized work modeling the phenomenon of conscience. The method used in this book made it possible to connect moral experience with decision-making procedures on the level of mathematical models. The application of such models allows us to propose the hypothesis of two fundamentally different ethical systems determining the normative patterns of human behavior in situations of conflict. Under the first ethical system the subject's self-esteem is raised if the subject seeks to resolve the conflict; in the second it is raised by seeking to dramatize the conflict. The new edition of The Algebra of Conscience is significantly expanded. The second part of the book, devoted to moral choice, is completely new. Based on the theory presented in the first part, it constructs the model of a subject capable of making an intentional choice. A special variable corresponds to the subject's intention. This development allows us to include within the model freedom of will and freedom of choice, and also to generalize classical 2x2 game theory to the case where outcomes, in addition to having utility measures, are either `positive' or `negative.' In its concluding chapters the book constructs a dynamic model of the intentional subject faced with a choice between two alternatives, neither of which is morally acceptable for the subject. It is shown that in this case the probabilities of choice of the alternatives may change chaotically. From this it follows that one cannot predict which alternative will be chosen or even the probabilities with which they will be chosen. Audience: The book is addressed to a broad readership having elementary knowledge of mathematical logic and the theory of probability. It can be used in college courses studying the modelling of moral choice. The book's material can also be used in the design of artificial intelligence systems.
