Explorations in Political Psychology (Duke studies in political psychology) Sears David O; Sullivan Denis C; Granberg Donald; Shanto Iyengar; Sidanius James; William J McGuire; Lodge Milton; Stroh Patrick; Tetlock Philip E; Wyer Robert S Duke University Press Books, Duke studies in political psychology, Durham, North Carolina, 1993
Mapping the territory where political science and psychology intersect, __Explorations in Political Psychology__ offers a broad overview of the the field of political psychology—from its historical evolution as an area of inquiry to the rich and eclectic array of theories, concepts, and methods that mark it as an emerging discipline.\ \ In introductory essays, editors Shanto Iyengar and William J. McGuire identify the points of exchange between the disciplines represented and discuss the issues that make up the subfields of political psychology. Bringing together leading scholars from social psychology and political science, the following sections discuss attitude research (the study of political attitudes and opinions); cognition and information-processing (the relationship between the structures of human information-processing and political and policy preferences); and decision making (how people make decisions about political preferences).\ \ As a comprehensive introduction to a growing field of interdisciplinary concern, __Explorations in Political Psychology__ will prove a useful guide for historians, social psychologists, and political scientists with an interest in individual political behavior.__Contributors__. Stephen Ansolabehere, Donald Granberg, Shanto Iyengar, Robert Jervis, Milton Lodge, Roger D. Masters, William J. McGuire, Victor C. Ottati, Samuel L. Popkin, William M. Runyan, David O. Sears, Patrick Stroh, Denis G. Sullivan, Philip E. Tetlock, Robert S. Wyer, Jr.

Discursive Psychology : Classic and Contemporary Issues Cristian Tileagă (editor), Elizabeth Stokoe (editor) Routledge, Explorations in Social Psychology, 1, 2016
__Discursive Psychology__ is the first collection to systematically and critically appraise the influence and development of its foundational studies, exploring central concepts in social psychology such as attitudes, gender, cognition, memory, prejudice, and ideology. The book explores how discursive psychology has accommodated and responded to assumptions contained in classic studies, discussing what can still be gained from a dialogue with these inquiries, and which epistemological and methodological debates are still running, or are worth reviving. International contributors look back at the original ideas in the classic papers, and consider the impact on and trajectory of subsequent work. Each chapter locates a foundational paper in its academic context, identifying the concerns that motivated the author and the particular perspective that informed their thinking. The contributors go on to identify the main empirical, theoretical or methodological contribution of the paper and its impact on consequent work in discursive psychology, including the contributors’ own work. Each chapter concludes with a critical consideration of how discursive psychology can continue to develop. This book is a timely contribution to the advance of discursive psychology by fostering critical perspectives upon its intellectual and empirical agenda. It will appeal to those working in the area of discursive psychology, discourse analysis and social interaction, including researchers, social psychologists and students.

International political psychology : explorations into a new discipline Anna Cornelia Beyer (ed.) Palgrave Macmillan UK, 1st ed. 2017, PT, 2016
This book intends to harvest insights from the discipline of Psychology, in its broad understanding, for application to International Relations. Although Psychology offers an abundance of theories that are useful for this purpose, they have so far remained largely untapped. In chapters on conflict, hegemony, terrorism, mental health, global consciousness, and peace proposals, Byer provides a synthesis of these two complimentary disciplines. This innovative volume presents the first contribution to the new discipline of International Political Psychology.-- Provided by publisher

lgli/Why States Matter in Economic Development The Socioeconomic Origins of Strong Institutions (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) [AN 3851311].epub
Why States Matter in Economic Development: The Socioeconomic Origins of Strong Institutions (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) Jawied Nawabi Routledge, 1, PS, 2024
This book examines the underlying conditions that give rise to states that are effective, efficient, and bureaucratically inclusive with their developmental policies. In spite of humanity’s significant advancements in science, technology and institutionalization of universal human rights conventions in the last seven decades, many countries are still failing to achieve successful development results. As a result, enormous levels of inequality, poverty, and malnutrition prevail. This book focuses on the role of the state in the political economy of development, tracing the socio-economic origins of effective state institutions from a comparative historical-institutional perspective. Drawing on the case studies of South Korea, Brazil, India, Spain, France, and England, the study looks at how good state institutions form, and why these are central to the socioeconomic advancement of their populations. The book contends that effective developmental states are those in which state actors are able to effectively diminish and co-opt the power of the country’s landed elites during the early years of state building. Effectively, the power balance between these two classes determines the developmental trajectory of the state. Considering agrarian reform as the foremost indispensable policy tool to open conditions for positive changes in effective taxation, education, healthcare, and strategic sustainable industrial policies, this analysis offers a significant contribution to the literature on the sociology of institutions and the political economy of development. As well as being a key reading for advanced students and researchers in these areas, this book draws real-life policy lessons for practitioners and policy makers in the developing world.

Political Psychology: New Explorations (Frontiers of Social Psychology) Jon A. Krosnick (editor), I-Chant A. Chiang (editor), Tobias H. Stark (editor) Psychology Press Ltd, Frontiers of Social Psychology, 1, 2016
In recent decades, research in political psychology has illuminated the psychological processes underlying important political action, both by ordinary citizens and by political leaders. As the world has become increasingly engaged in thinking about politics, this volume reflects exciting new work by political psychologists to understand the psychological processes underlying Americans’ political thinking and action. In 13 chapters, world-class scholars present new in-depth work exploring public opinion, social movements, attitudes toward affirmative action, the behavior of political leaders, the impact of the 9/11 attacks, and scientists’ statements about global warming and gasoline prices. Also included are studies of attitude strength that compare the causes and consequences of various strength-related constructs. This volume will appeal to a wide range of researchers and students in political psychology and political science, and may be used as a text in upper-level courses requiring a scholarly and contemporary review of major issues in the field.

nexusstc/Explorations in Marx’s Theory of Price—Why Marx Is Still Relevant for Understanding the Modern Economy: Volume I: Money and Money Prices/b8c7ab8e75511a61ebacd56e64bb4e8c.pdf
Explorations in Marx's theory of price -- Why Marx is still relevant for understanding the modern economy. Volume I, Money and money prices HOWARD, 1954- NICHOLAS Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature Limited, 1, 1, 2023
This book is the first volume in a three-volume series that takes an in-depth look at the relevance of Marx's economics for understanding the modern economy. The focus of this volume is the money prices of commodities. In light of the failure of central banks to stimulate inflation through printing of money, it is now accepted that there are problems with the mainstream approach to the explanation of prices. Howard Nicholas underlines the shortcomings of this and other approaches to the explanation of prices, particularly their concepts of the value of the commodity and money. He argues the problems with all other approaches are manifest in their inability to explain the changes in the relative prices of commodities, taking place in the context of changes in the aggregate money price level as well as independently. He contends that of paramount importance in Marx's explanation is that prices are set by producers prior to putting their commodities into the process of circulation, undermining the notion they are determined by the supply of and demand for the commodities in the process of exchange. Marx's approach to the explanation of prices is also contrasted with those of Neoclassicals, Post-Keynesians and Sraffa, with a view to highlighting the shortcomings in these approaches as bases for their understanding and explanations of money and prices. This book will be of interest to academics and students of price theory, money and finance, political economy, and the history of economic thought. Howard Nicholas retired in 2020 as associate professor in economics at the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University of Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He has published in the areas of inflation, development theory, financial markets, the global economy, and the macro dynamics of a number of countries. He is the author of Marx's Theory of Price and its Modern Rivals (Palgrave Macmillan).-- Provided by publisher

lgli/Gender-Based Violence in the Global South Ideologies, Resistances, Responses, and Transformations (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) [3781968].pdf
Gender-Based Violence in the Global South : Ideologies, Resistances, Responses, and Transformations Ramona Biholar;Dacia L. Leslie;; Dacia L. Leslie Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2024
This book amplifies the different voices and experiences of those facing gender-based violence (GBV) in the Global South. It explores the localised ways in which marginalised individuals design modes of coping with and address GBV, including cultural interpretations, and artistic and faith-based expressions. The book examines GBV triggers, prevalence, and societal impacts while referring to community, national, and regional mobilisation to deal with the phenomenon in its various manifestations, including physical, psychological, political, domestic, and public violence. It explores issues related to women's negotiations with the patriarchal underpinnings of GBV; the role of the law and history in the perpetuation of GBV; the complementary role of culture and faith to legal protection against GBV, and access to justice for women and girls. In doing so, the book exposes understandings and expressions of GBV, as well as methodologies and indigenous initiatives to prevent it through local viable solutions. The book thus challenges the normalisation of GBV in the Global South. Providing concrete and culturally relevant suggestions for challenging ingrained models of gender understandings of violence in the Global South, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of Development Studies, Gender Studies, Women's Studies, Violence and Abuse Studies, Human Rights, Criminal Law, and Socio-Legal Studies.

Facing the Challenge of Democracy: Explorations in the Analysis of Public Opinion and Political Participation Paul M. Sniderman & Benjamin Highton PrincetonUP, 2011
Citizens are political simpletons--that is only a modest exaggeration of a common characterization of voters. Certainly, there is no shortage of evidence of citizens' limited political knowledge, even about matters of the highest importance, along with inconsistencies in their thinking, some glaring by any standard. But this picture of citizens all too often approaches caricature. Paul Sniderman and Benjamin Highton bring together leading political scientists who offer new insights into the political thinking of the public, the causes of party polarization, the motivations for political participation, and the paradoxical relationship between turnout and democratic representation. These studies propel a foundational argument about democracy. Voters can only do as well as the alternatives on offer. These alternatives are constrained by third players, in particular activists, interest groups, and financial contributors. The result: voters often appear to be shortsighted, extreme, and inconsistent because the alternatives they must choose between are shortsighted, extreme, and inconsistent. Facing the Challenge of Democracy features contributions by John Aldrich, Stephen Ansolabehere, Edward Carmines, Jack Citrin, Susanna Dilliplane, Christopher Ellis, Michael Ensley, Melanie Freeze, Donald Green, Eitan Hersh, Simon Jackman, Gary Jacobson, Matthew Knee, Jonathan Krasno, Arthur Lupia, David Magleby, Eric McGhee, Diana Mutz, Candice Nelson, Benjamin Page, Kathryn Pearson, Eric Schickler, John Sides, James Stimson, Lynn Vavreck, Michael Wagner, Mark Westlye, and Tao Xie.

lgli/Orpheus and Eurydice in Myth, History, and Analytical Psychology.pdf
Orpheus and Eurydice in Myth, History, and Analytical Psychology: Loss, Longing, and Self-Awareness Terence Dawson Routledge, 1, 2025
This fascinating study shows how the minor Greek story of Orpheus and Eurydice came to have a more persistent and varied impact on Western culture than any other Greek myth. In the last 2,000 years, it has captivated the imagination of successive ages. Writers and other artists have turned to it to explore unexpectedly diverse concerns, from classical philosophy, through Christian values, to challenges involving individual psychology and societal well-being. Dawson’s study of the mythic imagination traces how these concerns unfold in poems, plays, novels, films, paintings, operas, ballets, and sculptures. It charts a history of responses to the experience of loss and longing and the need to grow in self-awareness. And it illustrates how responses to this myth anticipate many of the claims associated with analytical psychology. This book will be of interest to analysts, scholars, and students working with Jung’s ideas, and to all those interested in adaptations of myth and the implications they harbour.

lgli/Being with the Body in Depth Psychology.pdf
Being with the Body in Depth Psychology BARBARA. HOLIFIELD Routledge, 2024
Featuring a foreword by Donald Kalsched , this important book examines the integration of the subjectively experienced body in the practice of depth psychology. Barbara Holifield draws from philosophical perspectives, neuroscientific and infant research, developmental theory, and trauma studies to offer a comprehensive overview of embodiment within a relationally based psychoanalytic approach. Clinical vignettes demonstrate the critical value of working with the bodily-felt dimension of implicit relational memory and emphasize how bodily-felt sense facilitates access to feelings. The mythopoetic reality revealed in depth psychotherapeutic process weaves all of this into a tapestry of personal meaning. Here the body serves as a portal to the numinous––healing that goes far beyond the relief of symptoms to a renewed sense of aliveness. This book offers guiding principles for psychotherapists and clinicians of all levels to engage the bodily basis of experience in their clinical practice. It will appeal to general readers interested in integrating mind and body, including those in the healing arts, fine arts, dance, athletics, meditation, yoga, and martial arts.

The Philippine Islands, 1493-1898 -- Volume 21 of 55 1624 Explorations by Early Navigators, Descriptions of the Islands and Their Peoples, Their History and Records of the Catholic Missions, as Related in Contemporaneous Books and Manuscripts, Showing the Political, Economic, Commercial and Religious Conditions of Those Islands from Their Earliest Relations with European Nations to the Close of the Nineteenth Century Emma Helen Blair; James Alexander Robertson Project Gutenberg, 21, 1905
PrefaceThis volume, dated 1624, is entirely devoted to religious matters, ecclesiastical or missionary in their scope. The current documents for that year are concerned with conflicts between the diocesan authorities and the religious orders, and between the civil and religious authorities in Manila; the defeat by the Audiencia of the late Governor Fajardo’s attempt to found a seminary for the training of Japanese missionaries to be sent to labor in their own country; and efforts by the Spanish government to check the assumptions of the religious orders. Then follows a historical account of the early Recollect missions in the islands, down to the year 1624, compiled from the works of Andrés San Nicolas, Luis de Jesús, and Juan de la Concepción.A document entitled “Ecclesiastical affairs in the Philippines” contains letters, decrees, etc., bearing on this subject, dated from 1574 to 1624. Instructions to Gomez Perez Dasmariñas (1574) jealously restrict to the crown or its officials all exercise of the royal patronage; and give minute details of the course to be pursued by the governor and the provincials of the religious orders in matters where that right is involved. This is followed by various official documents issued in the controversy between Archbishop Serrano and the religious orders (1622–24) regarding the right claimed for archbishop and bishops to exercise the same jurisdiction and authority over the religious of the orders, when charged with the care of souls, as over the secular clergy. Serrano fortifies his position by various royal decrees and papal bulls. These documents show that much laxity has prevailed in selecting missionaries for the Indians, some of these teachers not even knowing the language of the natives to whom they minister; also that the friars claim even greater authority over their parishioners than that exercised by the archbishop and bishops in whose dioceses their missions are located. On June 20, 1622, the archbishop begins his...

Explorations in the Digital History of Ideas : New Methods and Computational Approaches Peter de Bolla Cambridge University Press, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2023
What would the history of ideas look like if we were able to read the entire archive of printed material of a historical period? Would our 'great men (usually)' story of how ideas are formed and change over time begin to look very different? This book explores these questions through case studies on ideas such as 'liberty', 'republicanism' or 'government' using digital humanities approaches to large scale text data sets. It sets out the methodologies and tools created by the Cambridge Concept Lab as exemplifications of how new digital methods can open up the history of ideas to heretofore unseen avenues of enquiry and evidence. By applying text mining techniques to intellectual history or the history of concepts, this book explains how computational approaches to text mining can substantially increase the power of our understanding of ideas in history.

Rawlsian Explorations in Religion and Applied Philosophy Daniel A. Dombrowski Pennsylvania State University Press, 1, 2011-06-01
To probe the underlying premises of a liberal political order, John Rawls felt obliged to use a philosophical method that abstracted from many of the details of ordinary life. But this very abstraction became a point of criticism, as it left unclear the implications of his theory for public policies and life in the real political world. __Rawlsian Explorations in Religion and Applied Philosophy__ attempts to ferret out those implications, filling the gap between Rawls’s own empyrean heights and the really practical public policy proposals made by government planners, lobbyists, and legislators. Among the topics examined are natural rights, the morality of war, the treatment of mentally deficient humans and nonhuman sentient creatures, the controversies over legacy and affirmative action in college admissions, and the place of religious belief in a democratic society. The final chapter explores how Rawls’s own religious beliefs, as revealed in two works posthumously published in 2009, played into his formulation of his theory of justice.

The Political Theory of Aristophanes : Explorations in Poetic Wisdom Aristophanes, Aristophanes.; Frost, Bryan-Paul; Mhire, Jeremy J State University of New York Press (SUNY Press), State University of New York Press, Albany, NY, 2014
Examines the political dimensions of Aristophanes’ comic poetry. This original and wide-ranging collection of essays offers, for the first time, a comprehensive examination of the political dimensions of that madcap comic poet Aristophanes. Rejecting the claim that Aristophanes is little more than a mere comedian, the contributors to this fascinating volume demonstrate that Aristophanes deserves to be placed in the ranks of the greatest Greek political thinkers. As these essays reveal, all of Aristophanes’ plays treat issues of fundamental political importance, from war and peace, poverty and wealth, the relation between the sexes, demagoguery and democracy to the role of philosophy and poetry in political society. Accessible to students as well as scholars, The Political Theory of Aristophanes can be utilized easily in the classroom, but at the same time serve as a valuable source for those conducting more advanced research. Whether the field is political philosophy, classical studies, history, or literary criticism, this work will make it necessary to reconceptualize how we understand this great Athenian poet and force us to recognize the political ramifications and underpinnings of his uproarious comedies. Jeremy J. Mhire is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Louisiana Tech University. Bryan-Paul Frost is James A. and Kaye L. Crocker Endowed Professor of Political Science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the coeditor (with Jeffrey Sikkenga) of History of American Political Thought.

Decolonizing Psychology: Globalization, Social Justice, and Indian Youth Identities (Explorations in Narrative Psychology) Sunil Bhatia Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford Scholarship Online, Explorations in narrative psychology, 2017
"In recent years, the news media has directed a significant amount of attention to the effect of globalization on the second most populous nation in the world: India. With the emergence of new economic opportunities and the influx of foreign popular culture and commodities, India has experienced an enormous sea of change in the last few decades. In Decolonizing Psychology: Globalization, Social Justice, and Indian Youth Identities, author Sunil Bhatia focuses on the psychological tensions that these changes have brought upon Indian youth today. Drawing on dozens of interviews, Bhatia offers readers a compelling glimpse and analysis of how these youth populations are engaging with the emerging presence of globalization in their day-to-day lives. As Bhatia explains, young Indians use the term 'world class selves' as a way to identify and describe the ways in which globalization has strengthened their standing in the world. By frequenting urban cafes and bars, watching American television and cinema, traveling abroad, and regularly consuming foreign commodities, Indian youth absorb the westernized culture and view themselves as peers to their western counterparts. At the same time, however, these young Indians proudly hold onto their homeland's traditions governing family and religious values. With remarkable clarity and nuance, Bhatia sheds an important light on the universalizing power and the colonizing dimensions of Euro-American psychology. By integrating insights from postcolonial, narrative, and cultural psychologies to explore how Euro-American scientific psychology became the standard approach, Bhatia reminds readers of whose stories are not being told, what knowledge is not being considered, and whose lives are not included in the central understanding of psychology today."-- Back cover

Public Diplomacy and Civil Society Organisations (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) Ibrahim Natil (editor) Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), 1, 2023
This book explores the roles of civil society organisations (CSOs) when engaging in public diplomacy activities and their impact on community development and change. It provides up-to-date analysis of the challenges and constraints facing CSOs involved in diplomatic missions and working with foreign donors. Bringing together case studies from Cameroon, Egypt, Poland, Palestine, Lebanon and Libya, this edited collection reflects on how external calls for proposals in the fields of women’s empowerment, community development, education, training, exchange programmes, democracy, human rights and peacebuilding influence the way civil society organisations contribute, deliver, intervene and position themselves in various societies. It explores the lessons learnt by various CSOs in identifying societal problems, understanding grassroots demands, prioritising development agendas and campaigning for peacebuilding. Grounded in a firm theoretical framework and based on up-to-date empirical research, the book reflects on the leadership shown by civil society organisations in development, politics and business and their impact on community development initiatives and local change process. This book will be an important resource for researchers, policymakers, donors, NGO practitioners and the beneficiaries themselves, within the areas of international development, peacebuilding, civil society, politics and international relations.

Facing the Challenge of Democracy : Explorations in the Analysis of Public Opinion and Political Participation Paul M Sniderman; Benjamin Highton; Paul M M Sniderman Princeton University Press, 1, 2012

Eric Voegelin and the Continental Tradition: Explorations in Modern Political Thought (Volume 1) (The Eric Voegelin Institute Series in Political Philosophy) Lee Trepanier, Steven F. Mcguire, Lee Trepanier, Steven F. Mcguire University of Missouri Press, Chicago Distribution Center [distributor, Eric Voegelin Institute series in political philosophy, 3rd ed, Columbia, Mo, 2011

Twentieth-century political philosopher Eric Voegelin is best known as a severe critic of modernity. Much of his work argues that modernity is a Gnostic revolt against the fundamental structure of reality. For Voegelin, "Gnosticism" is the belief that human beings can transform the nature of reality through secret knowledge and social action, and he considered it the crux of the crisis of modernity. As Voegelin struggled with this crisis throughout his career, he never wavered in his judgment that philosophers of the modern continental tradition were complicit in the Gnostic revolt of modernity. But while Voegelin's analysis of those philosophers is at times scathing, his work also bears marks of their influence, and Voegelin has much more in common with the theorists of the modern continental tradition than is usually recognized. Eric Voegelin and the Continental Tradition: Explorations in Modern Political Thought evaluates this political philosopher—one of the most original and influential thinkers of our time—by examining his relationship to the modern continental tradition in philosophy, from Kant to Derrida. In a compelling introduction, editors Lee Trepanier and Steven F. McGuire present a review of the trajectories of Voegelin's thought and outline what often is portrayed as his derisive critique of modernity. Soon, however, they begin to unravel the similarities between Voegelin's thought and the work of other thinkers in the continental tradition. The subsequent chapters explore these possible connections by examining Voegelin's intellectual relationship to individual thinkers, including Hegel, Schelling, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Gadamer. The essays in this volume go beyond Voegelin's own reading of the modern philosophers to offer a reevaluation of his relationship to those thinkers. In Eric Voegelin and the Continental Tradition, Voegelin's attempt to grapple with the crisis of modernity becomes clearer, and his contribution to the modern continental tradition is illuminated. The book features the work of both established and emerging Voegelin scholars, and the essays were chosen to present thoughtful and balanced assessments of both Voegelin's thought and the ideas of the other thinkers considered. As the first volume to examine the relationship—and surprising commonalities—between Voegelin's philosophy and the continental tradition as a whole, this text will be of interest not only to Voegelin disciples but to philosophers engaged by continental modernism and all disciplines of political philosophy.

the self in scientific psychology Mary Whiton Calkins Evergreen Review, Inc., 2009
INTRODUCTION The self is often bowed out of psychology on the ground that scientific introspection has failed to discover it. The object of this paper is to examine and to estimate this charge. The problem is two-fold. First, is the fact as stated: have scientific psychologists really found no trace of a self? Second, if the fact be admitted, is the failure to produce a self due to the inadequacy of the methods or to the non-existence of the self? (Is there no fox at all or does he avoid the traps we have set for him?) The discussion of these main questions will follow upon an introductory section which considers the nature of scientific method and the meaning given to the term 'self' by those who claim it for psychology. These preliminary topics will be discussed in reversed order.

Free Trade and Social Welfare in Europe : Explorations in the Long 20th Century Lucia Coppolaro; Lorenzo Mechi Taylor & Francis Limited, Routledge studies in modern European history, London, 2021
This book deals with the historical relationship between international trade liberalisation - one of the backbones of globalisation - and the development of social welfare. In Europe the issue has regularly been at the centre of the political debate for at least two centuries, and still nowadays it continues to inspire decisions of the highest order, as in the recent case of Brexit. Analysing a number of particularly meaningful episodes and moments, the eight chapters of this edited volume provide an overview of how the liberalisation/welfare nexus has been addressed in Europe since the end of the 19th century. Describing the oscillations from phases in which state, non-state and transnational actors saw the two elements as widely conflicting, to others in which more harmonious visions prevailed, the book uncovers the political complexity of the issue and contributes to clarifying its connections with the current economic situation, political balances and general social conditions.

The American Tragedy of COVID-19: Social and Political Crises of 2020 (Explorations in Contemporary Social-Political Philosophy) Zack, Naomi Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Incorporated, Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, Inc., Lanham, 2021
COVID-19 in the United States is a classic tragedy of destruction following errors in judgment Naomi Zack presents social and political aspects of this disaster as it unfolded in public health through federal and local government structures, society, culture, and the economy. Federalism combined with politics in facing and denying the SARS-CoV2 pandemic has revealed both weaknesses and strengths. Preparation was woefully inadequate for the 2020 tidal wave of COVID-19 that broke over the medical system, the educational system, the lives of the poor, essential workers, racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and women, especially. Rhetoric and conspiracy theories flourished, as Red and Blue Americans politicized the pandemic. Police reform became urgent after billions witnessed George Floyd s death. The war of the statues evoked new conflicts over free speech. The X-ray nature of COVID-19 revealed the United States to itself, in character, incompetence, superstition, and injustice, but also in dedication to caring for others and abiding resilience. The core of democracy held after the 2020 election but vigilance is newly important and required. As a record of this US Plague Year and an argument for why we need to prepare for Climate Change, as well as the next pandemic, this book is an essential resource for every student, scholar, and citizen.

This book examines the interaction between the realms of ethics and international relations. The essays discuss such issues as the responsibilities of defence scientists; theological reflections on compromise; the ethics of risk-taking; the international legal protection of human rights and the collaboration of non-governmental organisations in giving individuals greater influence through international institutions. Sydney D. Bailey made a distinguished contribution over many years in bringing ethical concerns to bear on international affairs. These essays, exploring some of the many areas in which he achieved recognition as a writer and policy adviser, were offered in his honour at 65 by his friends and colleagues..

nexusstc/State and Civil Society: Explorations in Political Theory/5296a6a7918b233ebeabc7ea185b4b80.pdf
State and civil society : explorations in political theory Neera Chandhoke Sage Publications; SAGE Publications Pvt. Ltd, New Delhi, Thousand Oaks, Calif, India, 1995
"An extremely competent overview of the state/civil society debate in political theory from the Greeks to the present." Indian Review of Books "Restating the need for civil society, the author has succeeded in projecting the view that the existence of civil society may not be a condition for democracy but it is certainly essential for democratic life.... The author has done some vigorous writing and the presentation of the ticklish but very important subject is highly impressive." The Hindu "The book has double value. It can be strongly recommended for the graduate student and for the general reader who simply wants to inform herself about the concept of civil society, its nature, history and relevance. It should also be read by those more seriously involved in the often intense debates over the theory and politics of social and political transformation....State and Society is a valuable pedagogic text; a thoughtful and wide-ranging exploration of central themes in political theory state, civil society, power, rights, universalism, particularism, communitartianism, individualism, and a worthwhile and illuminating read." Indian Express Civil society is, according to Marx, "the struggles and the aspirations of the age." This expression has become the foundation of reconstruction for both left radical and liberal theory. In this groundbreaking book, the author focuses on understanding the state in terms of its relation to the politics of civil society and vice versa. Author Neera Chandhoke provides readers with a stimulating conceptual analysis by sifting through historical systems of meaning. State and Civil Society makes an original and significant contribution to the study of "civil society" and its importance to the infrastructure of a democracy. An important addition to any scholar's library, this unique book is a must read in the areas of political theory, social theory, political science, political sociology, and history.

Massively Parallel Globalization: Explorations in Self-Organization and World Politics (SUNY series, James N. Rosenau series in Global Politics) David C. Earnest State University of New York Press (SUNY Press), State University of New York Press, Albany, 2015
In this era of globalization, people organize into fluid, adaptive networks to solve complex problems and provide resources that nation-states cannot. Examples include the Grameen Bank, mHealth, and the Ushahidi open source software project. Why do these networks succeed where nation-states fail? Only recently have social scientists developed tools to understand exactly how these complex networks self-organize, emerge, adapt, and solve collective problems. Three of these tools agent-based modeling, social network analysis, and evolutionary computing are converging in a field known as computational social science. In this provocative book, David C. Earnest discusses how computational social science helps us understand "massively parallel globalization." Using "explorations" of global systems ranging from fisheries to banking, Earnest illustrates the promise of computer models for explaining the surprises, cascades, and complexity that characterize global politics today. These examples of massively parallel globalization contrast sharply with the hierarchical and inflexible governmental bureaucracies that are poorly suited to solve many of today's transnational and global challenges.-- Provided by publisher

nexusstc/Political Participation and Democratic Capability in Authoritarian States/f8ae0ea79a772ab42d4299120757ff7c.epub
Political Participation and Democratic Capability in Authoritarian States (Routledge Explorations in Development Studies) Lien Pham; Ance Kaleja Routledge, Taylor et Francis Group, Routledge explorations in development studies, London ; New York, 2021
This book provides an innovative theoretical and empirical exploration of the political participation and democratic capability of people living in authoritarian states. Merging perspectives from sociology and political science, the book demonstrates that despite autocratic restrictions on opposition, there is often still leeway for people to express themselves as political agents and to develop democratic capability. The first two chapters problematise political participation and develop an interdisciplinary three-domain framework that allows for critical engagement with and appreciation of the contexts and varied ways in which participatory activities occur. This framework is applied to analyse six country case studies: Singapore, Jordan, Belarus, Cuba, Nigeria, and Vietnam. Drawing on a range of data sources and different analytical entry points, the book investigates the substantive opportunities people have in exercising political agency and the implications for democratic capability. The book concludes by summarising the emergent themes and examining the potential of applying this method of inquiry in other political contexts. Encompassing both governmental and societal practices, the book offers insights into state-society relations and their role in constructing political values and goals for participation, which people negotiate and mediate to inform their choices, modes, and forms of civic engagement. These insights present a broad approach towards the study of participation, with relevance for understanding political participation in various societies under non-democratic and democratic rule alike. This book will be useful for researchers and students interested in political dynamics and intersections with economic, cultural, and social aspects of development. It will also be beneficial for practitioners interested in participatory actions and social change.

Economic Neoliberalism and International Development Tribe, Michael ;Tribe, Michael (editor) Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Routledge Explorations in Development Studies, 1, 2020 nov 22
"This book provides a robust theoretical and empirical exploration of the interrelationship between economic neoliberalism and international development. Putting the experiences of developing and transitional economies centre stage, the book investigates how their economic policies compare with the nature of economic liberalism during and after the significant economic reforms which took place from the mid-1980s. Beginning with two chapters which provide an introduction to the concept of economic neoliberalism, the second section focusses on its application to 'practice', and the book moves on to country/regional case studies, taken from Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Latin America, China, and Eastern Europe. The book closes with some concluding remarks summarising some of the principal findings. Bringing together a wealth of expertise, this book clarifies controversial economic and political issues which have been significantly misunderstood in public discourse, and as such, it will be of interest to a range of researchers interested in the economic, social and political dynamics of developing and transitional countries"-- Provided by publisher

The Rise of Confucian Citizens in China : Theoretical Reflections and Empirical Explorations CANGLONG. WANG Routledge, Routledge Contemporary China Series, 2023
This book explores the relationship between Confucianism and citizenship and the rise of Confucian citizens in contemporary China. Combining theoretical and empirical approaches to the topic, the book constructs new frameworks to examine the nuances and complexities of Confucianism and citizenship, exploring the process of citizen-making through Confucian education. By re-evaluating the concept of citizenship as a Western construct and therefore challenging the popular characterization of Confucianism and citizenship as incompatible, this book posits that a new type of citizen, the Confucian citizen, is on the rise in 21st-century China. The book’s clear, accessible style makes it essential reading for students and scholars interested in citizenship, Confucianism and Chinese studies, and those with an interest in religion and philosophy more generally.

Explorations in Planning Theory edited by Seymour J. Mandelbaum, Luigi Mazza, Robert W. Burchell Transaction Publishers, New Brunswick, N.J, New Jersey, 1996

What is this thing called planning? What is its domain? What do planners do? How do they talk? What are the limits and possibilities for planning imposed by power, politics, knowledge, technology, interpretation, ethics, and institutional design? In this comprehensive volume, the foremost voices in planning explore the foundational ideas and issues of the profession.

Explorations in Planning Theory is an extended inquiry into the practice of the profession. As such, it is a landmark text that defines the field for today’s planners and the next generation. As Seymour J. Mandelbaum notes in the introduction, "the shared framework of these essays captures a pervasive interest in the behavior, values, character, and experience of professional planners at work." All of the chapters in this volume are written to address arguments that are important in the community of planning theoreticians and are crafted in the language of that community. While many of the contributors included here differ in their styles, the editors note that students, experienced practitioners, and scholars of city and regional planning will find this work illuminating and helpful in their research.

Through the Lens of Israel: Explorations in State and Society (S U N Y Series in Israeli Studies) Joel S. Migdal; Robert F Philip Professor of International Studies Joel S Migdal State University of New York Press, SUNY series in Israeli studies, Albany, ©2001
Through the Lens of Israel illuminates Israeli history through the use of the author s unique state-in-society approach, and, at the same time, refines, develops, and expands that approach. The book provides a window for the formation of Israeli state and society during the twentieth century, while using the Israeli experience to ask how social scientists can better investigate and understand other societies as well. Three central themes of Israeli history are at the core of the analysis state formation, society formation, and the mutually constitutive roles of state and society. By analyzing how Israel s state and society continually reconstruct one another, Migdal addresses larger questions with resonance far beyond Israel: How do particular societies and states end up with their distinctive character? How are the rules that shape everyday behavior determined? Who gains from these rules and who loses? And how and when do these rules and patterns of privilege change?"

Augustine and Psychology (Augustine in Conversation: Tradition and Innovation) Sandra Dixon (editor), John Doody (editor), Kim Paffenroth (editor) Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, Augustine in Conversation: Tradition and Innovation, 2012
[Omslag] The essays in Augustine and Psychology, edited by Sandra Lee Dixon, John Doody, and Kim Paffenroth, relate St. Augustine to the modern theory and practice of psychology in several ways. The contributors analyze Augustine's own examination of himself (and occasionally others) to see to what extent he himself was a "doctor" or practiced "therapy" in ways that we can recognize and appreciate; they find connections between his theories of memory and mind, and modern theories of the same; they consider the influences and context in which he worked, and how those affected him and his ideas of the mind and soul; and, lastly, the contributors subject St. Augustine to the scrutiny of modern psychoanalysis (and critique such scrutiny where appropriate)
