Green Analytical Chemistry, Volume 57: Theory and Practice (Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry) Miguel de la Guardia, Sergio Armenta Elsevier Pub. Co, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry 57, 1, 2010
This book provides a basic coverage of the fundamentals and principles of Green Chemistry as it applies to chemical analysis. The main goal of Green Analytical Chemistry is to avoid or reduce the undesirable environmental side effects of chemical analysis, while preserving the classic analytical parameters of accuracy, sensitivity, selectivity, and precision. The authors review the main strategies for greening the analytical methods, concentrating on minimizing sample preparation and handling, reduction of solvent and reagent consumption, reduction of energy consumption, minimization of waste, operator safety and the economic savings that this approach offers. Suggestions are made to educators and editors to standardize terminology in order to facilitate the identification of analytical studies on green alternatives in the literature because there is not a wide and generalized use of a common term which can group the efforts to prevent wastes, avoid the use of potentially toxic reagents or solvents and those involving the decontamination of wastes. provides environmentally-friendly alternatives to established analytical practicefocuses on the cost-saving opportunities offeredemphasis on laboratory personnel safety

Analysis of Marine Samples in Search of Bioactive Compounds (Volume 65) (Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry, Volume 65) Teresa Rocha-Santos and Armando C. Duarte (Eds.) Elsevier Science & Technology Books, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry 65, 1, 2014
Seas and oceans offer a wide range of temperature, pressure, light and chemical conditions thus allowing a wide diversity of marine organisms from shallow coastal waters to the deep ocean. These resources can be used to obtain new products and develop services, and in turn help to provide solutions to the challenges that affect our planet, including offering a sustainable supply of food and energy, new industrial materials and processes, new bioactive compounds, and new health treatments. Marine compounds have been identified as having antibacterial, anticoagulant, antifungal, antimalarial, antiprotozoal, antituberculosis, and antiviral activities. The major sources of these bioactive compounds are marine sponges, coelenterates, and microorganisms, followed by algae, echinoderms, tunicates, molluscs, and bryozoans. The discovery of bioactive compounds from marine samples is a hot topic considering the current need for sustainable use of marine resources. This book is a comprehensive overview of the analytical techniques employed in the discovery and characterization of bioactive compounds isolated from (all possible) marine samples and gives future perspectives of analytical methodologies. This overview includes an assessment of the sampling and preparation of extracts, the separation and isolation of bioactive compounds, their structural characterization and the application of bioassays in the discovery of bioactive compounds. * Comprehensive coverage of analytical techniques and applications * Clear diagrams to adequately support important topics * Real examples of applications of analytical techniques in the search for new bioactive compounds

Volume IX contains three chapters, all connected with fast growing branches of spectroscopy. The first, on Ultraviolet Photoelectron and Photoion Spectroscopy, presents the theoretical and practical foundations of the technique. Authours intend to publish follow-up chapters on its analytical applications (ESCA) and on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in a later volume. The second chapter, entitled Auger Electron Spectroscopy, is closely related to the first, describing a powerful method for surface analysis. In a future volume, a contribution on electron microprobe analysis is planned, thus making the field of surface analysis more complete. The last chapter in this volume on Plasma Excitation in Spectrochemical Analysis deals with a topic which revolutionized the field of analytical emission spectroscopy. When reading this chapter, the reader will find it helpful to refer back to Volumes IV and V of the series where spectroscopic instrumentation and emission spectroscopic analysis in general have been described respectively.

Introduction to the Analysis and Risk of Nanomaterials in Environmental and Food Samples Marinella Farré and Dami`Barceló (Eds.) Elsevier Science Ltd, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry 59, 1, 2012
The application of nanotechnology in different consumer products has delivered new products with highly desirable properties, but at same time has opened a new window for a wide group of emerging contaminants and a new type of human exposure which needs to be assessed. Most of the current human toxicological information on nanomaterials comes from nano-sized particles in air, and their effects via inhalation. Other routes of human exposure, such as water and food, and the effects on human health and the environment have been less studied. It is the recent research in these areas that is highlighted here in one of the first books covering the analysis and ecotoxicological evaluation of nanomaterials in food and the environment, with both matrices being of considerable interest. In addition to providing a global summary of recent research, this book shows how widely used chromatographic and spectroscopic methods can be added to the analytical arsenal of microscopic techniques that have commonly been used to characterize nanomaterials. * Describes the analytical techniques used to characterize nanomaterials and their applications in environmental or food samples * Includes analysis and ecotoxicological evaluation of nanomaterials in food and environmental matrices * Takes a detailed look at the research on emerging fields of human exposure to nanomaterials and their environmental risks

nexusstc/Sampling and sample preparation for field and laboratory: fundamentals and new directions in sample preparation/abfa243bc9cf4d6d88bfde0307469340.pdf
Sampling and sample preparation for field and laboratory : fundamentals and new directions in sample preparation Janusz Pawliszyn Elsevier Science, Wilson & Wilson's comprehensive analytical chemistry -- v. 37, Comprehensive analytical chemistry -- v. 37., 1st ed., Amsterdam, Boston, Netherlands, 2002
This title is the first comprehensive book on sampling and modern sample preparation techniques and has several main objectives: to facilitate recognition of sample preparation as both an integral part of the analytical process; to present a fundamental basis and unified theoretical approach for the professional development of sample preparation; to emphasize new developments in sample preparation technology; and to highlight the future impact of sample preparation on new directions in analytical science, particularly automation, miniaturization and field implementation. Until recently, there has been relatively little scientific interest in sampling and sample preparation, however this situation is presently changing as sampling and sample preparation become integral parts of the analytical process with their own unique challenges and research opportunities. Sampling and Sample Preparation for Field and Laboratory is an essential resource for all analytical chemists, and in particular those involved in method development. Not only does it cover the fundamental aspects of extraction, it also covers applications in various matrices and includes sampling strategies and equipment and how these can be integrated into the analytical process for maximum efficiency

nexusstc/Sampling and sample preparation for field and laboratory: fundamentals and new directions in sample preparation/396135daefcefd302cf61790905fbc5b.pdf
Not only does it cover the fundamental aspects of extraction, it also covers applications in various matrices and includes sampling strategies and equipment and how these can be integrated into the analytical process for maximum efficiency

lgli/A:\usenetabtechnical\Passive Sampling Techniques in Environmental Monitoring Mills Vrana (Compreh Anly Chem Vol 48 2007).pdf
COMPREHENSIVE ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY VOLUME 48:PASSIVE SAMPLING TECHNIQUES IN ENVIRONMENTAL MONITORING Richard Greenwood; Graham Mills; Bran Vrana Elsevier Science, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry, Comprehensive analytical chemistry, 48, 1, 2007
Monitoring pollutants in air, soil and water is a routine requirement in the workplace, and in the wider environment. Passive samplers can provide a representative picture of levels of pollutants over a period of time from days to months by measuring the average concentrations to which they have been exposed. Air monitors are widely used, for instance to measure the exposure of workers to volatile compounds, but also for monitoring the fate of pollutants in the atmosphere. Passive sampling devices are now becomining increasingly used to monitor pollutants in rivers, coastal waters and ground water where contamination results from sources such as domestic and industrial discharges, and the use of agrochemicals. Passive Sampling Techniques in Environmental Monitoring provides a timely collection of information on a set of techniques that help monitor the quality of air, surface and ground waters. Passive sampling can provide an inexpensive means of obtaining a representative picture of quality over a period of time, even where levels of pollutants fluctuate due to discontinuous discharges or seasonal application of chemicals such as pesticides. Recent changes in legislation have increased the pressure to obtain better information than that provided by classical infrequent spot sampling.Brought together in one source, this book looks at the performance of a range of devices for the passive sampling of metals, and of non-polar and polar organic chemicals in air and in water. The strengths and weaknesses and the range of applicability of the technology are considered. * Comprehensive review of passive sampling - covering air, water and majority of available technologies in one volume* Chapters written by international specialist experts * Covers theory and applications, providing background information and guidelines for use in the field

Wilson & Wilson's comprehensive analytical chemistry. Vol. 50, Analysis, fate and removal of pharmaceuticals in the water cycle M Petrović; Damià Barceló Elsevier Science, Elsevier Ltd., Amsterdam, 2007
Pharmaceutically active substances are a class of new, so-called "emerging" contaminants that have raised great concern in recent years. Human and veterinary drugs are constantly being introduced into the environment, mainly as a result of the manufacturing process. Over time, this level of chemical input may lead to long-term concentrations and promote continual, but unnoticed adverse effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Analysis, Fate and Removal of Pharmaceuticals in the Water Cycle discusses state-of-the-art analytical methods for trace determination of pharmaceuticals in environmental samples while reviewing the fate and occurrence of pharmaceuticals in the water cycle (elimination in wastewater and drinking water treatment). Focus is given to the newest developments in the treatment technologies, such as membrane bioreactors and advance oxidation processes.

* Well-structured overview of latest developments in trace determination
* Concise and critical compilation of literature published over the past few years
* Focuses on new treatment technologies, such as membrane bioreactors and advance oxidation processes.

Modern Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry) A.A. Cristy, Y. Ozaki and V.G. Gregoriou (Eds.) Elsevier Science; Elsevier, Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry 35, 1, 2001
This book is the latest addition to the Comprehensive Analytical Chemistry series. The chapters are designed to give the reader not only the understanding of the basics of infrared spectroscopy but also to give ideas on how to apply the technique in these different fields. Since spectroscopy is the study of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter, the first two chapters deal with the characteristics, properties and absorption of electromagnetic radiation. Chapter 3 provides the basis for vibrations in molecules from a classic mechanical point of view. Absorption of infrared radiation by a vibration in a molecule depends on the symmetry of the molecule and the symmetry of the vibrations. However, these symmetry aspects are not usually treated in textbooks on infrared spectroscopy. Therefore, Chapter 4 deals with the symmetry aspects of molecules and illustrates how the reader can determine the vibrations that are infrared active. Chapter 5 describes group frequencies and assignments of infrared band. Chapter 6 is an overview of the instrumentation used to perform the majority of Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopic experiments today. Chapter 7 describes a variety of the so-called hyphenated techniques that combine the use of FT-IR spectroscopy to another analytical technique. Chapter 8 depicts certain applications of FT-IR spectroscopic techniques to basic and industrial research. Specifically, a big portion of the chapter deals with the characterization of polymers and polymeric surfaces whereas the remaining part describes applications to organic thin films and biological molecules. Finally, Chapter 9 deals with some modern analytical methods in infrared spectroscopy. The methods that are described here are again not very common in books on infrared spectroscopy. In this chapter, the subject of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-IR) is also discussed. The principles of the technique along with selected examples of the applications of the 2D-IR treatment are presented.

Ion exchangers have an important place in modern analytical chemistry. They are mostly used in the separation of mixtures of ions, but can also be used elsewhere in qualitative analysis, in the preconcentration of ions from highly diluted solutions, in preparing and purifying solutions, chemicals or water, and in many other ways. From the large assortment of ion exchangers, preference has been given in this publication to the types based on synthetic organic high molecular-weight polymers. Only marginal attention is devoted to other types of exchangers such as derivatives of cellulose, liquid ion exchangers, ion exchanger papers and inorganic ion exchangers. This book is devoted to ion exchangers associated with the analytical chemistry of inorganic systems.
