Modulational Interactions In Plasmas (astrophysics And Space Science Library) Sergey V. Vladimirov, V.N. Tsytovich, S.I. Popel, F.K. Khakimov Springer Science + Business Media BV, Astrophysics and Space Science Library, 1st Edition., 2010
Modulational Interactions in Plasmas is the first book to present all the basic considerations relevant to the topic. It adopts a simple and universal approach, based on new methods developed for the description of modulation interactions in arbitrary media. Emphasis is given to the role of modulational interactions in fundamental topics, such as laser acceleration, the generation of strong magnetic fields, r.f. plasma heating and current drive, physical phenomena in active geophysical and space experiments, interactions of r.f. radiation with the ionosphere, etc. The methods employed can also be applied to other areas of physics. Audience: Researchers in plasma and laser physics, and nonlinear optics.

Computer Techniques in Radiation Transport and Dosimetry || Graham R. Stevenson (auth.), Walter R. Nelson, Theodore M. Jenkins (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, 10.1007/97, 1980
In October 1978, a group of 41 scientists from 14 countries met in Erice, Sicily to attend the Second Course of the Interna tional School of Radiation Damage and Protection'Ettore Majorana', the proceedings of which are contained in this book. The countries represented at the School were: Brazil, Canada, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, German Democratic Republic, Hungary, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was officially sponsored by the Italian Health Physics Association, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research, and the Sicilian Regional Government. In addition, administrative and tech nical support was received from the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and from CERN. The past 15 or so years have witnessed a significant develop ment of computer methods in the science of radiation protection. The radiation transport codes associated with hadronic and electro magnetic cascades, reactor shielding, unfolding techniques, and gamma ray spectrum analysis have reached the state-of-the-art level, and the Erice Course aimed at presenting as comprehensive an over view of these programs as was possible within the allotted time span.

Introduction to Nuclear Radiation Detectors || || Front_matter Ouseph, P. J. Springer US : Imprint: Springer, 10.1007/978-1-4684-0835-5, 1975
There have been many interesting developments in the field of nuclear radiation detectors, especially in those using semiconduct ing materials. The purpose of this book is to present a survey of the developments in semiconductor detectors along with discus sions about gas counters and scintillation counters. These discus sions are directed to detector users, usually scientists and technicians in different fields such as chemistry, geology, bio chemistry, and medicine. The operation of these detectors is discussed in terms of basic properties, such as efficiency, energy resolution, and resolving time, which are defmed in the first chapter. Differences among these detectors in terms of these properties are pointed out. Chapter 2, on interaction of radiations with matter, discusses how different radiations lose energies in matter and how differences in their behavior in matter affect the design and operation of detectors. Although emphasis is placed on fundamentals throughout the book, the reader is also made aware of the new developments in the field of radiation quite often detection. The author has taught a course in radioisotopes for several years for science, engineering, medical, and dental students. The emphasis on topics varied from time to time to satisfy the varying interests of the students. However, the contents of this book formed the core of the course. About ten selected experiments on detectors were done along with this course (a list of these vii Preface viii experiments may be supplied on request).

Theory and Applications of Moment Methods in Many-Fermion Systems J. B. French (auth.), B. J. Dalton, S. M. Grimes, J. P. Vary, S. A. Williams (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, 1st ed. 1980, New York, NY, 1980
The first international conference on "Theory and Applications of Moment Methods in Many-Fermion Systems" was held September 10 - 13, 1979 at Iowa State University. Manuscripts of the invited talks presented at this conference are the contents of this volume. These manuscripts were prepared and delivered to the editors by the authors; the responsibility for any errors in scientific con tent is theirs. While we, the editors, have made every effort to keep this volume as free from typographical errors as possible, we accept responsibility for such errors as do occur, even those which may be mistaken for scientific error. All but one of the invited talks given at the conference are reported here; those authors apparently felt unable to provide the editors with manuscripts. The editors. who also served as the organizing committee, would like to express appreciation to the sponsors of this con ference: Physics Department, Ames Laboratory, Energy and Mineral Resources Research Institute, and the Graduate College, all of Iowa State University, the National Science Foundation, and the U. S. Department of Energy. Their generosity both in terms of funding and support made the conference possible. We should also like to express our gratitude to the Interna tional Advisory Committee whose prestige lent support to the con ference and whose advice in topic selection was invaluable. Nuclear Models || Professor Dr. Walter Greiner, Professor Dr. Joachim A. Maruhn (auth.) Springer International Publishing, 10.1007/97, 1996
Theoretical physics has become a many-faceted science. For the young student it is difficult enough to cope with the overwhelming amount of new scientific material that has to be learned, let alone to obtain an overview of the entire field, which ranges from mechanics through electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, field theory, nuclear and heavy-ion science, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, and solid state theory to elementary-particle physics. And this knowledge should be acquired in just 8-10 semesters during which, in addition, a Diploma or Master's thesis has to be worked on or examinations prepared for. All this can be achieved only if the university teachers help to introduce the student to the new disciplines as early on as possible, in order to create interest and excitement that in turn set free essential new energy. Naturally, all inessential material must simply be eliminated. At the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt we therefore confront the student with theoretical physics immediately in the first semester. Theoretical Mechanics I and II, Electrodynamics, and Quantum Mechanics I - an Introduction are the basic courses during the first two years. These lectures are supplemented with many mathematical explanations and much support material. After the fourth semester of studies, graduate work begins and Quantum Mechanics II - Symme tries, Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics, Relativistic Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Electrodynamics, the Gauge Theory of Weak Interactions, and Quantum Chromodynamics are obligatory.

Transport and Optical Properties of Nonideal Plasma I. T. Iakubov, A. G. Khrapak (auth.), G. A. Kobzev, I. T. Iakubov, M. M. Popovich (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1, 1995
The book is devoted to the physical properties of nonideal plasma, in which the effects of interparticle interactions are substantial. Such a plasma is usually compressed so strongly that it is called dense plasma. Interest in plasma studies has increased over the last 10 or 15 years, owing to the development of modern technology and sophisticated facilities whose oper ation is based on a high energy density. As a result of a recent sharp increase in the number of experimental and theoretical investigations, much interesting and reliable data on the properties of dense plasma have been obtained. The data are distributed in a rapidly growing number of original publications and reviews. This volume is a systematic treatment of the thermodynamics (ionization equilibrium, particle composition), charge transport properties (especially electric con ductivity), optical properties (peculiarities of continuous and discrete spectra), and collective modes (features and manifestations) of nonideal plasma. Theoretical models are considered along with the experimental data. The book is intended for the wide range of readers, including specialists in plasma physics and various researchers who need knowledge in this field. Erscheinungsdatum: 06.06.2013

Advances in nuclear physics / volume 12 / [contrib. Jochen Heisenberg ... Stephen J. Wallace ... J.G. Zabolitzki J.W. Negele; Erich W. Vogt New York, NY: Springer US: Imprint: Springer, Springer Nature, New York, NY, 2012
1 online resource (272 p.) Recent advances in three areas of nuclear physics are addressed in this volume. The theory of the ground state of matter is fundamental to many areas of physics and, in particular, is crucial to a microscopic understanding of nuclear physics. All conclusions concerning the relevance of me sonic, nu clear isobar, and quark degrees of freedom to nuclear structure are nec essarily subject to limitations in one's ability to accurately solve the nuclear many-body problem with static two-body interactions. Thus, it is particularly significant that in recent years great advances have been made in the vari ational theory of the ground state of zero-temperature infinite matter. The first article presents a pedagogical treatment of these advances and surveys computational results for a variety of model and physical systems. The second article reviews recent progress in determining nuclear tran sition densities from inelastic electron scattering. In the past, detailed knowl edge of the charge distributions in nuclear ground states obtained from inverting elastic electron scattering data has proven extremely valuable Bibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph Includes bibliographical references at the end of each chapters and index 1 Hypernetted-Chain Theory of Matter at Zero Temperature -- 1. Low-dimensional Topology And Quantum Field Theory (nato Science Series B: (closed)) Louis H. Kauffman (auth.), Hugh Osborn (eds.) Springer Science & Business Media, NATO ASI Series, NATO ASI Series 315, 1, 1993
The motivations, goals and general culture of theoretical physics and mathematics are different. Most practitioners of either discipline have no necessity for most of the time to keep abreast of the latest developments in the other. However on occasion newly developed mathematical concepts become relevant in theoretical physics and the less rigorous theoretical physics framework may prove valuable in understanding and suggesting new theorems and approaches in pure mathematics. Such interdis ciplinary successes invariably cause much rejoicing, as over a prodigal son returned. In recent years the framework provided by quantum field theory and functional in tegrals, developed over half a century in theoretical physics, have proved a fertile soil for developments in low dimensional topology and especially knot theory. Given this background it was particularly pleasing that NATO was able to generously sup port an Advanced Research Workshop to be held in Cambridge, England from 6th to 12th September 1992 with the title Low Dimensional Topology and Quantum Field Theory. Although independently organised this overlapped as far as some speak ers were concerned with a longer term programme with the same title organised by Professor M Green, Professor E Corrigan and Dr R Lickorish. The contents of this proceedings of the workshop demonstrate the breadth of topics now of interest on the interface between theoretical physics and mathematics as well as the sophistication of the mathematical tools required in current theoretical physics. The Brentwood Summer Institute on Nuclear and Particle Physics at Intermediate Energies was the second of its kind organised by the TRIUMF group of Universities, the first taking place at Banff in 1970. With the advent of initial beams at the new meson facilities at LAMPF, SIN, NEVIS, CERN S.C. and TRIUMF it was an eminently suitable time for an in-depth study of some of the science which will be possible when these accelerators achieve their design intensities in proton and meson beams. The organizing committee, comprising: Univ. of Alberta G.A. Beer Univ. of Victoria J.M. Cameron J.M. McMillan U.B.C. D.F. Measday U.B.C. R.M. Pearce Univ. of Victoria J.E.D. Pearson U.B.C. J.B. Warren U.B.C. wishes to acknowledge the financial support provided by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, the National Research Council of Canada, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., without which the Institute could not have been held. Also we wish to acknowledge the helpful advice of the Scientific Committee of NATO and of Dr. T. Kester, Secretary of this Committee. Many persons from the University of Victoria and the University of British Columbia helped with the local arrangements and we are grateful to them and particularly to the staff of Brentwood College who made the stay of the participants such a pleasant one. Theory of the Inhomogeneous Electron Gas (Physics of Solids and Liquids) N. H. March (auth.), S. Lundqvist, N. H. March (eds.) Springer International Publishing, Physics of Solids and Liquids, 1, 1983
The theory of the inhomogeneous electron gas had its origin in the Thomas Fermi statistical theory, which is discussed in the first chapter of this book. This already leads to significant physical results for the binding energies of atomic ions, though because it leaves out shell structure the results of such a theory cannot reflect the richness of the Periodic Table. Therefore, for a long time, the earlier method proposed by Hartree, in which each electron is assigned its own personal wave function and energy, dominated atomic theory. The extension of the Hartree theory by Fock, to include exchange, had its parallel in the density description when Dirac showed how to incorporate exchange in the Thomas-Fermi theory. Considerably later, in 1951, Slater, in an important paper, showed how a result similar to but not identical with that of Dirac followed as a simplification of the Hartree-Fock method. It was Gombas and other workers who recognized that one could also incorporate electron correlation consistently into the Thomas-Fermi-Dirac theory by using uniform electron gas relations locally, and progress had been made along all these avenues by the 1950s.

Supercollider 5 Joseph Cipriano (auth.), Phyllis Hale (eds.) Springer US, Springer US Imprint : Springer, 1, 1994
The fifth annual International Symposium on the Super Collider was a great success. Over 700 participants from around the country and the world gathered on May 6-8,1993, in San Francisco to mark the progress of the SSC, to discuss current issues, and to chart a course of action for the continued development of our understanding of basic subatomic matter. Together, the American public, academic communities, private sectors and governments from around the world have embarked on a project critical to maintaining our nation's preeminence as the world's leader in basic scientific research and the practical application of scientific knowledge. America has long maintained a commitment to investing in our nation's future. The Super Collider represents an essential next step in the direction of scope of human knowledge. The theme of the conference reflects these important goals: "SSC Focusing the World on Next Generation Science. " The challenge for us today is to spread the message of the importance of investing in America's future. This is our task, and the task of supporters of the Super Colliderthroughout the nation. Without employing all of our energies, our nation will miss an historic opportunity to ensure America's scientific technological and economic leadership in the years ahead as we enter the next millennium. The present volume contains the text of the invited talks delivered at the Eighth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held at SchloB Seggau, Province of Styria, Austria, during the period August 22-26, 1994. The pro ceedings of the Fifth Conference (Oulu, Finland 1987), the Sixth Conference (Arad, Israel 1989) and the Seventh Conference (Minneapolis, USA 1991) have been published. by Plenum as the first three volumes of this series. Papers from the First Conference (Trieste, Italy 1978) comprise Nuclear Physics volume A328, Nos. 1 and 2, the Second Conference (Oaxtepec, Mexico 1979) was published by Springer-Verlag as volume 142 of "Lecture Notes in Physics," entitled "Recent Progress in Many Body Theories." Vol ume 198 of the same series contains the papers from the Third Conference (Altenberg, 1983). These volumes intend to cover a broad spectrum of current research topics in physics that benefit from the application of many-body theories for their elucidation. At the same time there is a focus on the development and refinement of many-body methods. One of the major aims of the conference series has been to foster the exchange of ideas among physicists working in such diverse areas as nuclear physics, quantum chemistry, complex systems, lattice Hamiltonians, quantum fluids and condensed matter physics. The present volume contains contributions from all these areas. th The conference was dedicated on the occasion of Ludwig Boltzmann's 150 birthday. Erscheinungsdatum: 21.10.2012

Laser interaction and related plasma phenomena, volume 2 : proceedings of the second workshop, held at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Hartford Graduate Center, Hartford, Connecticut, August 30-September 3, 1971 A. Jacques Beaulieu (auth.), Helmut J. Schwarz, Heinrich Hora (eds.) Springer International Publishing, 1, 1972
Paul Harteck Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, New York When the Maser and the Laser Were discovered, people were speculating if this was the beginning of a new page, or even a new chapter, in the Book of Physics. The Second Workshop on "Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena" held in Hartford made it clear that the perspective had changed, that people now question if the consequences of these discoveries constitute a new chapter, or possibly a new era in Physics. While the papers presented were all stimulating and of out standing quality, of special interest were the experiments which demonstrated that triggering of thermonuclear fusion by Laser techniques is indeed in the realm of the possible. Along these lines, I enjoy recalling an anecdote concerning the late F. G. Houtermans. I think that all who knew him will agree that he was an unusual genius and at the same time a very amusing colleague. Erscheinungsdatum: 08.10.2012

Strongly Coupled Plasma Physics (Nato ASI Subseries B:, 154) Setsuo Ichimaru, Hiroshi Iyetomi, Shigenori Tanaka (auth.), Forrest J. Rogers, Hugh E. Dewitt (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, NATO ASI Series 154, 1, 1987
A NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Strongly Coupled Plasma Physics was held on the Santa Cruz Campus of the University of California, from August 4 through August 9, 1986. It was attended by 80 participants from 13 countries, 45 of whom were invited speakers. The present volume contains the texts of the invited talks and many of the contributed papers. The relative length of each text is roughly proportional to the length of the workshop presentation. The aim of the workshop was to bring together leading researchers from a number of related disciplines in which strong Coulomb interactions play a dominant role. Compared to the 1977 meeting in Orleans-la-Source, France and the 1982 meeting in Les-Houches, France, it is apparent that the field of strongly coupled plasmas has expanded greatly and has become a very significant field of physics with a wide range of applications. This workshop had a far greater participation of experimental researchers than did the previous two, and some confrontations of real experiments with theoretical calculations occurred. In the two earlier meetings the theoretical presentations were dominated by numerical simulations of static and dynamic properties of various strongly coupled plasmas. The dearth of experiments in the 1970's is now replaced by some very good experimental efforts. Erscheinungsdatum: 04.11.2011

Ordered and Turbulent Patterns in Taylor-Couette Flow (Nato Science Series B: (297)) Russell J. Donnelly (auth.), C. David Andereck, F. Hayot (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, NATO ASI Series, NATO ASI Series 297, 1, 1992
Seldom does a physical system, particularly one as apparently simple as the flow of a Newtonian fluid between concentric rotating cylinders, retain the interest of scientists, applied mathematicians and engineers for very long. Yet, as this volume goes to press it has been nearly 70 years since G. I. Taylor's outstanding experimental and theoretical study of the linear stability of this flow was published, and a century since the first experiments were performed on rotating cylinder viscometers. Since then, the study of this system has progressed enormously, but new features of the flow patterns are still being uncovered. Interesting variations on the basic system abound. Connections with open flows are being made. More complex fluids are used in some experiments. The vigor of the research going on in this particular example of nonequilibrium systems was very apparent at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Ordered and Turbulent Patterns in Taylor Couette Flow," held in Columbus, Ohio, USA May 22-24, 1991. A primary goal of this ARW was to bring together those interested in pattern formation in the classic Taylor Couette problem with those looking at variations on the basic system and with those interested in related systems, in order to better define the interesting areas for the future, the open questions, and the features common (and not common) to closed and open systems. This volume contains many of the contributions presented during the workshop. Erscheinungsdatum: 13.07.2013

Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena : Volume 3A Edward Teller (auth.), Helmut J. Schwarz, Heinrich Hora (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, 1st ed. 1974, New York, NY, 1974
As was the case in the two preceding workshops of 1969 and 1971, the Third Workshop on "Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena" held in 1973 was of international character. The main purpose was to review the advanced status of this particular and turbulent field of physics as it had developed vigorously in all major laboratories of the world since 1971. Due to recently accelerated advancements, it was hardly possible to present a com plete tutorial review; the subject is still in its premature stages and changing rapidly. A topical conference would have been too specific for a group of physicists with broad backgrounds working in the field or for those just about to enter it. It was the aim of the workshop and it is the aim of these proceedings to help this large group of scientists find their way within the highly complex and sometimes confusing results of a new field. We optimized the task of the workshop with extensive reviews on severa~ topics and at the same time included more detailed infor mation for specialists. The differences in their conclusions were not a matter of contention but rather served to complement the advanced results. As in the preceding workshops, we directed our attention toward critical realism in respect to the complexity of the field. What is meant here is exemplified in the contribution by R. Sigel W.667).

Stochastic Variational Approach to Quantum-Mechanical Few-Body Problems (Lecture Notes in Physics Monographs, 54) Yasuyuki Suzuki, Kálmán Varga Springer Berlin, Lecture notes in physics, New series Monographs 54, 1, 1998
The quantum-mechanical few-body problem is of fundamental importance for all branches of microphysics and it has substantially broadened with the advent of modern computers. This book gives a simple, unified recipe to obtain precise solutions to virtually any few-body bound-state problem and presents its application to various problems in atomic, molecular, nuclear, subnuclear and solid state physics. The main ingredients of the methodology are a wave-function expansion in terms of correlated Gaussians and an optimization of the variational trial function by stochastic sampling. The book is written for physicists and, especially, for graduate students interested in quantum few-body physics.

Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories : Volume 2 T. M. Rice (auth.), Y. Avishai (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1st ed. 1990, New York, NY, 1990
The present volume contains the texts of the invited talks delivered at the Sixth International Conference on Recent Progress in Many-Body Theories held in Arad, Israel during the period November 5-10 1989. The host institute was the Physics Department at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev. Beside the invited talks there have been also two poster sessions. The general format and style of the meeting followed closely those which had preceded it and evolved from the earlier conferences in the series: Trieste 1978, Oxtapec 1981, Altenberg 1983, San Francisco 1985 and Oulu 1987. The conferences in this series are intended to cover the broad spectrum of modem physics related to the many body problem. It starts on the smallest length scales in dealing with quark gluon plasmas and ends on the largest length scales in tackling many body problems in astrophysics. In between, it is concerned with nuclear physics, solid state physics, statistical mechanics, field theory, molecular dynamics, hydrodynamics, chaos, etc. Like in the Oulu conference, special emphasis has been put on recent developments in high Tc superconductivity. Beside the half day session devoted to it we have also organized an evening round table discussion on the future of the whole subject. Furthermore, a new, and in the opinion of the editor a very refreshing element which was absent in earlier conferences was the presentation of a few talks by experimentalists. Group Symmetries in Nuclear Structure Jitendra C. Parikh (auth.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Nuclear Physics Monographs, 1st ed. 1978, New York, NY, 1978
This book is the result of a graduate-level "special topics" course I gave at the University of Rochester in 1970. The purpose of the course was to discuss as far as possible all known symmetries in nuclei, with special emphasis on dynamical symmetries. Since there was no comprehensive account of this subject in the literature, I was encouraged to write a review based on my lecture notes. The end result is the present volume. Like the course, the book is intended mainly for graduate students and research workers in nuclear physics. The only prior knowledge required to follow the book is graduate-level quantum mechanics and nuclear physics and hence I believe that it can be useful to both experimental and theoretical nuclear physicists. In addition, the book should prepare a student to read the latest literature on the subject and also train him to do group theoretic work in nuclear physics. The organization of the material in the book is described in Chapter 1. Erscheinungsdatum: 08.03.2013

Complete Atlas of Polarization Observables in Deuteron Photodisintegration Below Pion-Threshold K.-M. Schmitt, H. Arenhövel (auth.) Springer-Verlag Wien, Few-Body Systems, Few-Body Systems 4, 1, 1991
For the first time, a complete calculation of all 288 polarization observables of deuteron photodisintegration for polarized photons and an oriented deuteron target is presented for energies below +-production threshold. The observables are calculated within a nonrelativistic framework but with inclusion of lowest-order relativistic effects. Explicit meson exchange currents and isobar configurations as manifestation of subnuclear degrees of freedom are included in the calculation. The sensitivity of the various polarization observables with respect to subnuclear degrees of freedom, to electric and magnetic multipole contributions and to a variety of realistic potential models are systematically investigated. Thus this atlas provides the most detailed and systematic survey on polarization observables of this important process. It allows to analyse the different dynamical properties of the np-system as contained in the various observables and, therefore, will be useful for both theoretical studies and for the planning and evaluation of experiments as well. It serves in addition as an important supplement to the recent general review on deuteron photodisintegration by A. Arenhövel and M. Sanzone (Few-Body Systems, Suppl. 3). Particle Production Spanning MeV and TeV Energies (NATO Science Series C: (closed)) S. J. Brodsky (auth.), W. Kittel, P. J. Mulders, O. Scholten (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint : Springer, NATO Science Series 554, 1, 2000
Particle production is an important topic in nuclear and particle physics. At high energies, particle production is considered to proceed via parton branching and subsequent fragmentation into hadrons. The study of the dynamics of this process and the study of the structure of hadrons in the context of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) belong to the challenges of the standard model of elementary particle physics, requiring new, nonperturba tive approaches in field theory. Within a nucleus, many-body dynamics is important and particle production may be used to determine many features of a non-equilibrium quantum system at low or high temperatures. At this Advanced Study Institute the different aspects of particle pro duction were expanded upon in a series of lectures given by experts in their fields, covering topics ranging from near-threshold meson production in proton-proton collisions to correlations in multi-GeV jet fragmentation in high-energy scattering processes and signals of a quark-gluon plasma formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Strong emphasis was placed not only on state of the art research, but also on the necessary physics back ground. The lectures were supplemented by problem sets and discussion sessions. There was also time for students to present short contributions on their research. Erscheinungsdatum: 31.07.2000

Reviews of Plasma Physics (Reviews of Plasma Physics, 21) V. D. Pustovitov (auth.), B. B. Kadomtsev, V. D. Shafranov (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Reviews of Plasma Physics, Reviews of Plasma Physics 21, 1, 2000
Volume 21 provides the basis of the MHD theory in two extended reviews. The first review deals with high-temperature plasma equilibrium and stability in conventional stellarators (the steady state three-dimensional magnetic confinement systems). The second review considers the processes in the stationary plasma thrusters (SPT) created by one of the authors, A.I Morozov. In spite of the three-dimensional nature of stellarators, the author of the review, V.D. Pustovitov, has been able to give a concise presentation of basic ideas and results of the rather complicated theory of stellarators, both for specialists and for students in this field. The results of experimental and theoretical investigations of a new type of discharge device, SPT, are presented in the second review. Plasma thrusters generate quasi-neutral multi-ampere streams of ions with particle energies of 50 - 1000eV. They are most widely known as electric propulsion thrusters for spacecraft, and have been mounted onboard more than 50 Russian satellites. In addition, the SPTs are now used in technological systems for processing the surface layers of various products.

<p><P>For more than 25 years the Standard Model of particle physics has withstood the confrontation with experimental results of increasing precision, but this does not imply that the Standard Model can answer all questions about the ultimate constituents of nature. This book presents a critical examination of the latest experimental results and confronts them with the predictions of the Standard Model. <br> Besides discussions of accelerator results from LEP, HERA and the TEVATRON, attention is paid to the unresolved problems of neutrino oscillations, CP violation, dark matter and cosmology. New theoretical ideas are also analyzed in order to explore possible extensions of the standard model. Realistic plans for future accelerators are presented and their physics potential is discussed, paving the way for the next generation of particle physics experiments.</p> <h3>Booknews</h3> <p>The 15 presentations consider recent issues around the Standard Model for particle physics. Their topics include results from LEP 200, post splitting and U(1) gauge invariance, the physics of CP violation and rare decays, heavy gauge boson production at small transverse momentum in collisions between hadrons, recent power corrections and renormalons in the theory of strong interactions, supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, supersymmetry and duality in field theory and string theory, baryogenesis, and cosmology and dark matter. General Relativity and Gravitation : Invited Papers and Discussion Reports of the 10th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation, Padua, July 3–8, 1983 Bruno Bertotti (auth.), B. Bertotti, F. de Felice, A. Pascolini (eds.) Springer Netherlands, Fundamental Theories of Physics 9, 1, 1984
The Tenth International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation (GR10) was held from July 3 to July 8, 1983, in Padova, Italy. These Conferences take place every three years, under the auspices of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, with the purpose of assessing the current research in the field, critically discussing the prog ress made and disclosing the points of paramount im portance which deserve further investigations. The Conference was attended by about 750 scientists active in the various subfields in which the current research on gravitation and general relativity is ar ticulated, and more than 450 communications were sub mitted. In order to fully exploit this great occur rence of experience and creative capacity, and to pro mote individual contributions to the collective know ledge, the Conference was given a structure of work shops on the most active topics and of general sessions in which the Conference was addressed by invited speakers on general reviews or recent major advance ments of the field. The individual communications were collected in a two-volume publication made available to the participants upon their arrival and widely distributed to Scientific Institutions and Research Centres. Ion Beam Surface Layer Analysis : Volume 1 J. W. Butler (auth.), O. Meyer, G. Linker, F. Käppeler (eds.) Springer US; Imprint: Springer, 1, 1976
The II. International Conference on Ion Beam Surface Layer Analysis was held on September 15-19, 1975 at the Nuclear Research Center, Karlsruhe, Germany. The date fell between two related con ferences: "Application of Ion-Beams to Materials" at Warwick, Eng land and "Atomic Collisions in Solids" at Amsterdam, the Nether lands. The first conference on Ion Beam Surface Layer Analysis was held at Yorktown Heights, New York, 1973. The major topic of that and the present conference was the material analysis with ion beams including backscattering and channeling, nuclear reactions and ion induced X-rays with emphasis on technical problems and no vel applications. The increasing interest in this field was docu mented by 7 invited papers and 85 contributions which were presen ted at the meeting in Karlsruhe to about 150 participants from 21 countries. The oral presentations were followed by parallel ses sions on "Fundamental Aspects", "Analytical Problems" and "Appli cations" encouraging detailed discussions on the topics of most current interest. Summaries of these sessions were presented by the discussion leaders to the whole conference. All invited and contributed papers are included in these proceedings; summaries of the discussion sessions will appear in a separate booklet and are availble from the editors. The application of ion beams to material analysis is now well established. Erscheinungsdatum: 31.05.2013

Clusters in Nuclei, Volume 3 (Lecture Notes in Physics Book 875) A. Deltuva, A. C. Fonseca, R. Lazauskas (auth.), Christian Beck (eds.) Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer, Lecture Notes in Physics, Lecture Notes in Physics 875, 3, 1, 2014
Following the pioneering discovery of alpha clustering and of molecular resonances, the field of nuclear clustering is today one of those domains of heavy-ion nuclear physics that faces the greatest challenges, yet also contains the greatest opportunities.℗ After many summer schools and workshops, in particular over the last decade, the community of nuclear molecular physicists has decided to collaborate in producing a comprehensive collection of lectures and tutorial reviews covering the field.℗ This℗ third volume follows the successful Lect. Notes Phys. 818 (Vol. 1) and 848 (Vol. 2), and comprises six extensive lectures covering the following topics:℗ - Gamma Rays and Molecular Structure - Faddeev Equation Approach for Three Cluster Nuclear Reactions - Tomography of the Cluster Structure of Light Nuclei Via Relativistic Dissociation - Clustering Effects Within the Dinuclear Model : From Light to Hyper-heavy Molecules in Dynamical Mean-field Approach - Clusterization in Ternary Fission - Clusters in Light Neutron-rich Isotopes℗ By promoting new ideas and developments while retaining a pedagogical style of presentation throughout, these lectures will serve as both a reference and an advanced teaching manual for future courses and schools in the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics

Written in a pedagogical way, the articles in this book address graduate students as well as researchers and are well suited for seminar work. Subjects at the forefront of nuclear research, bordering other areas of many-particle physics, such as electron scattering at different energy scales, new physics with radioactive beams, multifragmentation, relativistic nuclear physics, high spin nuclear problems, chaos, the role of the continuum in nuclear physics or recent calculations with the shell model are presented. It is felt that the topics treated in this book address the main future lines of development of nuclear physics.

The History and Science of the Manhattan Project Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Physics Bruce Cameron Reed (auth.) Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH &, Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Physics, Undergraduate Lecture Notes in Physics, 1, 2014
The development of atomic bombs under the auspices of the U. S. Army ́ s Manhattan Project during World War II is considered to be the outstanding news story of the twentieth century. In this book, a physicist and expert on the history of the Project presents a comprehensive overview of this momentous achievement. The first three chapters cover the history of nuclear physics from the discovery of radioactivity to the discovery of fission, and would be ideal for instructors of a sophomore-level ́ Modern Physics ́ course. Student-level exercises at the ends of the chapters are accompanied by answers. Chapter 7 covers the physics of first-generation fission weapons at a similar level, again accompanied by exercises and answers. For the interested layman and for non-science students and instructors, the book includes extensive qualitative material on the history, organization, implementation, and results of the Manhattan Project and the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombing missions. The reader also learns about the legacy of the Project as reflected in the current world stockpiles of nuclear weapons. ℗

This year's four articles address topics ranging from the nature of the substructure of the nucleon and the deuteron to the general properties of the nucleus, including its phase transitions and its rich and unexpected quantal properties. They review the present experimental and theoretical understanding of the origin of the spin of the nucleon, the liquid-gas phase transition that occurs at much lower temperatures and densities than those of a quark-gluon plasma in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the experimental data and theoretical models emerging about very-high-spin states of nuclei, and the history of findings from the deuteron derived from recent electron-deuteron scattering experiments with observed polarizations and other experiments. The authors are not identified.
