To date, most ethanolic fuel is generated from " fi rst generation" crop feedstocks by conversion of soluble sugars and starch to bioethanol. However, these crops exploit land resources required for production of food. On the other hand, utilization of "second generation" lignocellulosic biofuels derived from the inedible parts of plants remains problematic as high energy inputs and harsh conditions are required to break down the composite cell walls into fermentable sugars. This chapter reviews and discusses genetic engineering approaches for the generation of plants modi fi ed to increase cellulose synthesis, enhance plant growth rates, cell wall porosity and solubility, as well as improve cell wall sugar yields following enzymatic hydrolysis. Strategies focusing on increased accessibility of cellulosedegrading enzymes to their substrates have been developed. These approaches reduce cell wall crystallinity or alter the hemicellulose-lignin complexes. A novel approach to cell wall modi fi cation involving the introduction of noncrystalline, soluble polysaccharides into cell walls is also presented. The use of such approaches may promote and accelerate the future use of lignocellulosic feedstocks for the bioethanol industry.

This arena for the application of methods developed in mechanics has not drawn as much attention as more traditional tissue biomechanics. However, biophysicists, and even biologists apply ideas of elasticity and structural mechanics quite widely in studying molecules and cells. Many critical functions of biomolecules and cells are fundamentally mechanical in origin, and the mechanics of many biomolecules demonstrate scaling laws that are non-classical to traditional structural mechanics and elasticity. This compilation of the scientific papers presented at the meeting will prove invaluable to researchers in the mechanics of biology as this field develops in the decades to come and takes its place as an acknowledged and central area in biology.

These volumes, 9 and 10, of Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics constitute the proceedings of an international symposium on the fracture mechanics of ceramic materials held at the Japan Fine Ceramics Center, Nagoya, Japan on July 15, 16, 17, 1991. These proceedings constitute the fifth pair of volumes of a continuing series of conferences. Volumes 1 and 2 were from the 1973 symposium, volumes 3 and 4 from a 1977 symposium, and volumes 5 and 6 from a 1981 symposium all of which were held at The Pennsylvania State University. Volumes 7 and 8 are from the 1985 symposium which was held at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. The theme ofthis conference, as for the previous four, focused on the mechanical behavior ofceramic materials in terms of the characteristics ofcracks, particularly the roles which they assume in the fracture processes and mechanisms. The 82 contributed papers by over 150 authors and co-authors represent the current state of that field. They address many of the theoretical and practical problems ofinterest to those scientists and engineers concerned with brittle fracture.

Junn Nakayama was a pioneer of the quantitative study of the fracture of ceramics. A physics graduate of Gakushuin University, he joined the research laboratory of the Asahi Glass Co., Ltd. in 1953. Within a decade he had developed the now-famous work-of-fracture test (Japan Journal of Applied Physics, 3[7]442(1964)). He had already applied it to the quantitative analysis of the thermal shock damage of fireclay refractories (Bulletin of the American Ceramic Society, 45[7]666(1966)) when others were just becoming cognizant of this simple, yet elegant technique. Those two studies were landmark efforts in establishing the framework for the microstructural design of improved thermal shock damage resistant refractories. The principles were subsequently extended to structural ceramics, as well as to the confirmation of the energy balance theories for thermal shock damage advanced by Hasselman.Junn Nakayama spent his entire career with the Asahi Glass Co., becoming Director of the Research Center in Yokohama and subsequently Managing Director of the Asahi Glass Foundation in Tokyo. At this Fifth Fracture Mechanics of Ceramics Symposium in July of 1991, Junn Nakayama attended the opening ceremonies at the Japan Fine Ceramics Center in Nagoya, but was not able to participate in the meeting. When introduced to the attendees, he received a standing ovation. It is with deep regret to report to you that Junn Nakayama passed away on December 14, 1991. I remember sitting spellbound, watching the movie When Worlds Collide. Two planets hurled through space toward Earth while scientists and engineers frantically raced to complete a rocket ship that would take them to safety. In the final moments the spaceship lifted off as the occupants watched the Earth bulge, crack, then literally explode as one of the planets struck it. As I left the theater I wondered if it was really possible for another world to collide with Earth. Later I learned that while many catastrophic collisions no doubt occurred early in the his tory of the solar system, today they are exceedingly rare. I was relieved, but in another sense I was disappointed (not that I hoped a collision of this type would actually occur). A collision of two objects in space, say, two stars, I was sure would be a spectacular event. It is quite unlikely, however, that we will ever witness the collision of two stars. The event is just too rare. But collisions of systems of stars-galaxies-oddly enough, are relatively com mon. In fact, we see evidence of several in the sky right now. Erscheinungsdatum: 01.01.1990
