Ethics and the Australian News Media John Hurst and Sally A. White Macmillan Education Australia; Macmillan, South Melbourne, Australia, 1994
The clash between the public right to know and public safety is just one of the fundamental conflicts raised by Hurst and White in this, the first definitive study of ethics in the Australian news media. Hurst and White explore the concept of ethical conduct, apply it to journalism, then draw on a wealth of local examples where the news media's conduct was challenged. They examine the attempts to codify the principles - from the policies of press councils to the journalists' own codes of ethics - and show where these are inadequate, muddled or honoured in the breach. They put forward some provocative ideas for reform.

A short history of stupid : the decline of reason and why public debate makes us want to scream Keane, Bernard, Razer, Helen Allen & Unwin, Crows Nest, NSW, 23 Nov 2016
How did everything get so dumb? How did we become hostages to idiocy? What must we do to be freed from a captor whose ransom note simply reads, 'D'oh'? The deteriorating quality of our public debate and the dwindling of common sense in media, politics and culture can drive you to despair and rage. It certainly drove writers Helen Razer and Bernard Keane to a desperate act: befriending each other for long enough to write a book. Join forces with these uneasy allies to fight against a world that has lost its reason. Explore what's behind the remorseless spread of idiocy, and why there's just so much damn Stupid around you. Stupid isn't just ignorance; it's not just laziness. Worse than the absence of thought, Stupid is a virus that drains our productivity and leaves us sick and diminished. And Stupid has a long, complex and terrible past, one we need to understand in order to defeat it. A Short History of Stupid traces the origins of this maddening ill, examining the different ways in which we've been afflicted over the last three thousand years. It damns those who have spread Stupid and celebrates the brave few who resisted. It shows how Stupid tightens the grubby grip of the foolish around our throats. Hilarious, smart, unpleasant, infuriating and rude, A Short History of Stupid is at once a provocation and a comfort. It will spark debate, soothe the terminally frustrated and outrage the righteously Stupid. It is a book whose Stupid time has come.

Media Freedom And Accountability edited by Everette E. Dennis, Donald M. Gillmor, and Theodore L. Glasser New York: Greenwood Press, Contributions to the study of mass media and communications,, no. 14, New York, New York State, 1989
<p>How, when, and to what extent should people be able to talk back to the media; what works, what doesn't, what's possible? This volume, sponsored by the Gannett Center for Media Studies at Columbia University and the Silha Center for the Study of Media Ethics and Law at the University of Minnesota, examines these and other issues. With a deep concern for freedom from censorship and a strong awareness of our constitutional franchise of freedom of expression, the editors and contributors seek to define meaningful forums where citizens can air their views about media to a large enough audience to make a significant impact. The strong sense of urgency in forming these investigations results from the recognition of mass media's central and powerful role in both public and consumer life; the ability of mass media to help or harm is indisputable. The recognition of media impact by editors, broadcasting groups, corporate owners, and researchers in diverse fields, has made the public's view of the press a highly visible item on the public agenda. In spite of this, discussions of media accountability have remained conceptually muddled and formal means for public feedback have been few and feeble.</p> <p>The editors of <i>Media Freedom and Accountability</i> present and assess several forms of media accountability that function effectively within free speech parameters. They include the marketplace model, the self-regulatory model, the voluntary model, the fiduciary model, and the litigation model. Discussions of these models include evaluations of letters-to-the-editor columns, radio talk shows, ethical codes, ombudsmen, press councils, citizens groups such as Accuracy in Media, the FCC and FTC, and the court system of redress. Lewis Lapham, editor of Harper's; Alfred Balk, former editor of the Columbia Journalism Review and now with World Press Review; and Kenneth Morgan of the British Press Council, among other contributors, offer thoughtful and informative essays that approach the subject from various pragmatic and philosophical stances. <i>Media Freedom and Accountability</i> is made-to-order for courses in mass media, for all media practitioners, and for all those concerned with the scope of media in the United States and with methods of public response.</p>

Mixed Media: Moral Distinctions in Journalism, Advertising, and Public Relations Thomas H. Bivins (Editor) Taylor & Francis [CAM], 1 edition, August 1, 2003
This text introduces readers to the tools necessary for making moral and ethical decisions regarding the use of mass media. The focus is on the three mass media industries most pervasive in today's society: the news media (journalism), advertising, and public relations. In his exploration of ethical issues and media, author Thomas Bivins guides students to understand not what the "right" answers are, but to identify those answers that are most appropriate within the given context. Identifying those to whom the answers are the most appropriate is a major concern of this book. Readers will come away with a greater appreciation for the complexities of making a moral decision and will develop a personal "yardstick" by which to measure their decisions. The chapters in this text offer insights on: \*similarities and differences among the ethical dilemmas faced by the mass media; \*common ground on which to evaluate media behavior; \*media obligations; \*professional ethics; \*ethical theory and its application to the modern media; and \*considerations of truth and harm. This text has been developed for courses covering ethics in public relations, advertising, and journalism. Offering valuable lessons applicable to all forms of communication, Mixed Media serves as a critical starting point for understanding and developing answers to ethical questions. These lessons serve not only to better students' ability to make ethical decisions, but also to better the media professions as they become practitioners in the mass media industry.

Controversies in Media Ethics (2nd Edition) A. David Gordon, John Michael Kittross; overview and commentary by John C. Merrill; contributions by Carol Reuss Allyn & Bacon, 2nd ed., New York, New York State, 1999
Uniquely arranged as a series of debates, Controversies in Media Ethics, 2/e, offers alternate perspectives on a wide range of media ethics issues. In each chapter, two opposing viewpoints are presented, followed by a commentary by John Merrill. These chapter-ending perspectives identify middle ground between the widely differing perspectives presented and encourage students to think critically about important issues. Provocative topics, such as privacy, violence and pornography, and ethics in advertising provide students with lively and interesting examples of the complex traditional and emerging problems of media ethics.

Ethics in Media Communications: Cases and Controversies (with InfoTrac®) Louis Alvin Day Southbank, Victoria, Australia ; Belmont, CA: Thomson, Wadsworth, Wadsworth series in mass communication and journalism, 5th ed, Southbank, Victoria, Australia, ©2006
<p>In this text for undergraduates, Day (Louisiana State University) offers a systematic approach to moral reasoning by combining ethical theory and practice. He covers foundations and principles in three lead-off chapters. Ten case studies follow, addressing such issues as truth and honesty, privacy, confidentiality, conflicts of interest, economic pressures and social responsibility, morally offensive content, and stereotypes. A discussion on the current state of media ethics and the future of the subject's study is provided in the epilogue. As well, three appendices are offered, containing reprints of the ethics codes for the Society of Professional Journalist, the American Advertising Federation, and the Public Relations Society of America. Media And The Moral Mind (electronic Media Research Series) Ronald C Tamborini; ProQuest (Firm) Taylor & Francis Group, Electronic Media Research Ser., 1, 2012
Questions regarding the relation between media and morality have been a lasting concern. Can media exposure shape or alter moral values? Does morality influence how audience members select, interpret and respond to media content? Attempts to answer such questions are hindered by the complex nature of morality and its dynamic relation with media. This volume brings together leading scholars in an effort to examine reciprocal processes that connect media with morality, and to set a course for understanding this association. Individual essays combine established and emerging theories from media and moral psychology to explain how fundamental mechanisms that govern moral reasoning can shape and be shaped by media exposure. Together these scholars provide an understanding of the relationship between media and morality that should serve as an invaluable resource for current and future generations of researchers.

Media and Values : Intimate Transgressions in a Changing Moral and Cultural Landscape David E. Morrison; Matthew Kieran; Michael Svennevig; Sarah Ventress Intellect Books, Ingram Publisher Services UK, Bristol, U.K., 2007
Media and Values investigates the moral performance of the media. Based on an exhaustive number of focus groups, surveys, and interviews with senior media staffers in the United Kingdom and Europe, this book charts the changing status of the media as a moral voice. The authors argue that television has lost the authority to espouse a single vision of the proper way to live, and instead reflects the norms of a variety of social groups. This groundbreaking volume addresses the lack of moral certainty reflected both in television programs and their audiences. “There are great riches here: from the interviews with senior media executives... to the discussion of popular television culture's celebration of celebrity.”—John Lloyd, Prospect “This profoundly original and learned book creatively illuminates citizens'moral reasoning about the media, culture, and government. A tour de force of nuanced interdisciplinary scholarship, Media & Values offers wide-ranging insights into the responsibilities of the communication industry, the justifications and consequences of telecoms regulation—and the nature of the good society itself.”—Robert M. Entman, J. B. and M. C. Shapiro Professor of Media & Public Affairs, George Washington University “This is a very important book—a ‘must read.'The intellectual scope is astonishing: the problem it addresses is quite crucial—namely the moral incoherence of the contemporary world and the way that this shows up in empirical research into individual attitudes/opinions/tastes/judgements. It is clearly a cumulative critical reassessment of the implications of research going back to the sixties. It's original, powerful, thoughtful and spot-on as a diagnosis of the times and the very real issues we confront today. A major piece of work.”—Paddy Scannell, Department of Communication Studies, University of Michigan

Media and Morality : On the Rise of the Mediapolis Roger Silverstone Polity Press; Polity, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Cambridge, UK, 2007
Roger Silverstone's compelling new book places the global media at the heart of the moral future of civilisation. It argues that the media (the press, broadcasting, the Internet and increasingly peer-to-peer technologies and networks) have a profound significance for the way in which the world is understood by its citizens. It also argues that without a clear understanding of that significance, and without a critique of the way in which the media go about their daily business, we are likely to see an erosion in the capacity of human beings to understand and respect each other, especially those whom they see and hear only in their mediation. In a world of increasing polarisation and demonisation, the media have a powerful role to play. They can reinforce or they can challenge that polarisation. The book proposes that we should think of the global media as a mediapolis, a single space of political and social communication, in which the basis for the relationships between neighbours and strangers can be either constructed or destroyed. The mediapolis is a moral space, a space of hospitality, responsibility, obligation and judgement. And questioning its present and future requires attention to issues of media justice, media literacy and media regulation. Media and Morality is essential reading for all students and scholars of the media but will be of equal fascination to anyone interested in the workings of our modern world.

The Smear: How the Secret Art of Character Assassination Controls What You Think, What You Read, and How You Vote Sharyl Attkisson HarperCollins Publishers, HarperCollins, [N.p.], 2017
Ever wonder how politics turned into a take-no-prisoners blood sport? The New York Times bestselling author of Stonewalled pulls back the curtain on the shady world of opposition research and reveals the dirty tricks those in power use to influence your opinionsBehind most major political stories in the modern era, there is an agenda; an effort by opposition researchers, spin doctors, and outside interests to destroy an idea or a person. The tactic they use is the smear. Every day, Americans are influenced by the Smear without knowing it. Paid forces cleverly shape virtually every image you cross. Maybe you read that Donald Trump is a racist misogynist, or saw someone on the news mocking the Bernie Sanders campaign. The trick of the smear is that it is often based on some shred of truth, but these media-driven "hit pieces" are designed to obscure the truth. Success hinges on the smear artist's ability to remain invisible, to make it seem as if their work is neither calculated nor scripted. It must appear to be precisely what it is not. Veteran journalist Sharyl Attkisson has witnessed this practice firsthand. After years of being pitched hit jobs and puff pieces, she is an expert at detecting smear campaigns. Now, the hard-hitting investigative reporter shares her inside knowledge, revealing how the smear takes shape and who its perpetrators are--including Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal and, most influential of all, "right-wing assassin turned left-wing assassin" (National Review) political operative David Brock and his Media Matters for America empire. Attkisson exposes the diabolical tactics of smear artists and their outrageous access to the biggest names in political media--operatives who are corrupting the political process and discouraging widespread citizen involvement in our democracy. Read by the author.

Media and Public Shaming: Drawing the Boundaries of Disclosure (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism) Julian Petley; University of Oxford Reuters Institute for the study of journalism I.B. Tauris in association with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2013
The Media Today, And Especially The National Press, Are Frequently In Conflict With People In The Public Eye, Particularly Politicians And Celebrities, Over The Disclosure Of Private Information And Behaviour. Historically, Journalists Have Argued That 'naming And Shaming' Serious Wrong-doing And Behaviour On The Part Of Public Officials Is Justified As Being In The Public Interest. However, When The Media Spotlight Is Shone On Perfectly Legal Personal Behaviour, Family Issues And Sexual Orientation, And When, In Particular, This Involves Ordinary People, The Question Arises Of Whether Such Matters Are Really In The 'public Interest' In Any Meaningful Sense Of The Term. In This Book, Leading Academics, Commentators And Journalists From A Variety Of Different Cultures, Consider The Extent To Which The Media Are Entitled To Reveal Details Of People's Private Lives, The Laws And Regulations Which Govern Such Revelations, And Whether These Are Still Relevant In The Age Of Social Media.--publisher's Website. You are Being Lied To: The Disinformation Guide to Media Distortion, Historical Whitewashes, and Cultural Myths Russ Kick, Russell Kick The Disinformation Company, Ltd, Paperback, 2001
<p><i>You Are Being Lied To</i> is a massive collection of articles that ruthlessly destroy the distortions, myths, and outright lies that are fed to us by the government, the media, corporations, history books, organized religion, science and medicine, and society in general. No one is spared, and all sacred cows are candidates for the grinder.</p> <p>Do you believe any of the following?<br> </p> <ul> <li>Alcoholics Anonymous is effective.</li> <li>Hackers pose a grave threat to the nation.</li> <li>There's a hidden code in the Bible.</li> <li>The Big Bang is an airtight fact.</li> <li>Thousands of species have gone extinct because of deforestation.</li> <li>Licking certain toads will get you high.</li> <li>Most terrorists are Middle Eastern.</li> </ul> <p>Wake up! You're being lied to.</p> <p>This book acts as a battering ram against the distortions, myths, and outright lies that have been shoved down our throats by the government, the media, corporations, organized religion, the scientific establishment, and others who want to keep the truth from us. An unprecedented group of researchers--investigative reporters, political dissidents, academics, media watchdogs, scientist-philosophers, social critics, and rogue scholars--paints a picture of a world where crucial stories are ignored or actively suppressed and the official version of events has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.
