lgli/Phillips, Jayne Anne [Phillips, Jayne Anne] - Tous les vivants: Le Crime de Quiet Dell (2016, Olivier).pdf
Tous les vivants - Le Crime de Quiet Dell Phillips, Jayne Anne [Phillips, Jayne Anne] Olivier, 2016
Chicago, 1931.

Night Watch (Pulitzer Prize Winner) : A Novel Jayne Anne Phillips Borzoi Books, Alfred A. Knopf, Penguin Random House, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2023
LONGLISTED FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD IN FICTION • From one of our most accomplished novelists, a mesmerizing story about a mother & daughter seeking refuge in the chaotic aftermath of the Civil War—and a brilliant portrait of family endurance against all odds"A tour de force." — Tayari Jones, author of An American MarriageIn 1874, in the wake of the War, erasure, trauma, & namelessness haunt civilians & veterans, renegades & wanderers, freedmen & runaways. Twelve-year-old ConaLee, the adult in her family for as long as she can remember, finds herself on a buckboard journey with her mother, Eliza, who hasn’t spoken in more than a year. They arrive at the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia, delivered to the hospital’s entrance by a war veteran who has forced himself into their world. There, far from family, a beloved neighbor, & the mountain home they knew, they try to reclaim their lives. The omnipresent vagaries of war & race rise to the surface as we learn their story: their flight to the highest mountain ridges of western Virginia; the disappearance of ConaLee’s father, who left for the War & never returned. Meanwhile, in the asylum, they begin to find a new path. ConaLee pretends to be her mother’s maid; Eliza responds slowly to treatment. They get swept up in the life of the facility—the mysterious man they call the Night Watch; the orphan child called Weed; the fearsome woman who runs the kitchen; the remarkable doctor at the head of the institution.Epic, enthralling, & meticulously crafted, Night Watch is a stunning chronicle of surviving war & its aftermath. °°° JAYNE ANNE PHILLIPS is the author of Black Tickets, Machine Dreams, Fast Lanes, Shelter, MotherKind, Lark & Termite, Quiet Dell, & Night Watch. Lark and Termite (Vintage Contemporaries) Phillips, Jayne Anne Vintage, a division of Random House, Inc, First Vintage Contemporaries edition, New York, 2010, ©2009
From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. From Phillip's (_Motherkind_; Shelter ) comes a long-awaited and wonderful coming-of-age tale of grief and survival. The story straddles a parallel six-day period in July, one in 1959—during which 17-year-old Lark; her brother, Termite, who cant talk; and their aunt and caretaker, Nonie, are struggling to balance hope and despair in smalltown West Virginia—and nine years earlier, when Termites father, Robert Leavitt, serves a tour in Korea. Lark, living with her aunt without knowing who her father is or why her mother gave her up, was nine years old when baby Termite landed on their doorstep. Nonie works long hours at a local restaurant to support the hodgepodge family, leaving Lark to take over mothering duties, but as Lark finishes secretarial school and realizes how limited the options are for her and Termite, forces of nature and odd individuals shed light on mysteries of the past and lend a hand in steering the next course of action. Through Robert and Nonie's stories and by exposing the innermost thoughts of each character, Phillips creates a wrenching portrait of devotion while keeping the suspense at a palpitating level. (Jan.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From This poetic novel alternates between the last hours of Robert Leavitt, a corporal in the U.S. Army, pinned down in a tunnel in South Korea, in 1950, and the story of his disabled son, Termite, who, nine years later, is living with his half sister, Lark, and their aunt in West Virginia. Lark knows little of her mother and even less of her father, and pours herself into nurturing Termite, whose stunted body and lack of language has Social Services perpetually threatening to take him away. The appearance of a sympathetic social worker marks the beginning of a great fracture in their lives, which culminates in a flood that reveals the past and makes way for a new future. Phillips gives each scene an evocative, often lyrical description, but the mystical elements of the story and the improbable ending undermine an otherwise moving exploration of familial love. Black Tickets: Stories (Vintage Contemporaries) Jayne Anne Phillips Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, Place of publication not identified, 2011
From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Night Watch: the reputation-making debut short story collection that paved the way for a new generation of writers. • “Brilliant … Phillips is a virtuoso.” —The Chicago TribuneJayne Anne Phillips's reputation-making debut collection paved the way for a new generation of writers. Raved about by reviewers and embraced by the likes of Raymond Carver, Frank Conroy, Annie Dillard, and Nadine Gordimer, Black Tickets now stands as a classic. With an uncanny ability to depict the lives of men and women who rarely register in our literature, Phillips writes stories that lay bare their suffering and joy. Here are the abused and the abandoned, the violent and the passive, the impoverished and the disenfranchised who populate the small towns and rural byways of the country. A patron of the arts reserves his fondest feeling for the one man who wants it least. A stripper, the daughter of a witch, escapes from poverty into another kind of violence. A young girl during the Depression is caught between the love of her crazy father and the no less powerful love of her sorrowful mother. These are great American stories that have earned a privileged place in our literature.

Our Bodies, Whose Property? Phillips, Anne Princeton University Press, 2017
An argument against treating our bodies as commodities No one wants to be treated like an object, regarded as an item of property, or put up for sale. Yet many people frame personal autonomy in terms of self-ownership, representing themselves as property owners with the right to do as they wish with their bodies. Others do not use the language of property, but are similarly insistent on the rights of free individuals to decide for themselves whether to engage in commercial transactions for sex, reproduction, or organ sales. Drawing on analyses of rape, surrogacy, and markets in human organs, Our Bodies, Whose Property? challenges notions of freedom based on ownership of our bodies and argues against the normalization of markets in bodily services and parts. Anne Phillips explores the risks associated with metaphors of property and the reasons why the commodification of the body remains problematic. What, she asks, is wrong with thinking of oneself as the owner of one's body? What is wrong with making our bodies available for rent or sale? What, if anything, is the difference between markets in sex, reproduction, or human body parts, and the other markets we commonly applaud? Phillips contends that body markets occupy the outer edges of a continuum that is, in some way, a feature of all labor markets. But she also emphasizes that we all have bodies, and considers the implications of this otherwise banal fact for equality. Bodies remind us of shared vulnerability, alerting us to the common experience of living as embodied beings in the same world. Examining the complex issue of body exceptionalism, Our Bodies, Whose Property? demonstrates that treating the body as property makes human equality harder to comprehend.

Destabilizing theory : contemporary feminist debates MICHELE BARRETT AND ANNE PHILLIPS POLITY PRESS, Cambridge, UK, England, 1992
In The Past Decade The Central Principles Of Western Feminist Theory Have Been Dramatically Challenged. Many Feminists Have Endorsed Post-structuralism's Rejection Of Essentialist Theoretical Categories, And Have Added A Powerful Gender Dimension To Contemporary Critiques Of Modernity. Earlier Concepts Of Gender, The Body, Equality, And Women Have Been Radically Undermined, And Newer Concerns With Difference, Identity, And Power Have Emerged. Destabilizing Theory Explores These Developments In A Set Of Specially Commissioned Essays By Feminist Theorists. Does This Change Amount To A Real Shift Within Feminist Theory, Or Will Feminism's Links With An Emancipatory Modernism Reinstate An Older Political Agenda? Can We Transcend The Common Counterposition Of Equality And Difference, Or Is Feminism Condemned To Argue Within The Terms Of This Binary Opposition? Contributors Include Griselda Pollock, Chandra Talpade Mohanty, Rosemary Pringle And Sophie Watson, Moira Gatens, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, Sylvia Walby, And Biddy Martin As Well As The Two Editors. The Essays Deal With Subject Matter As Wide-ranging As The State, Experience, Art, Lesbianism, And The Politics Of Translation, And Engage With Major Debates In Philosophy, Political Theory, And Sociology.

Multiculturalism without Culture Anne Phillips Princeton University Press Project MUSE, 3rd print, Princeton, N.J, 2009
Public opinion in recent years has soured on multiculturalism, due in large part to fears of radical Islam. In Multiculturalism without Culture, Anne Phillips contends that critics misrepresent culture as the explanation of everything individuals from minority and non-Western groups do. She puts forward a defense of multiculturalism that dispenses with notions of culture, instead placing individuals themselves at its core. Multiculturalism has been blamed for encouraging the oppression of women--forced marriages, female genital cutting, school girls wearing the hijab. Many critics opportunistically deploy gender equality to justify the retreat from multiculturalism, hijacking the equality agenda to perpetuate cultural stereotypes. Phillips informs her argument with the feminist insistence on recognizing women as agents, and defends her position using an unusually broad range of literature, including political theory, philosophy, feminist theory, law, and anthropology. She argues that critics and proponents alike exaggerate the unity, distinctness, and intractability of cultures, thereby encouraging a perception of men and women as dupes constrained by cultural dictates. Opponents of multiculturalism may think the argument against accommodating cultural difference is over and won, but they are wrong. Phillips believes multiculturalism still has an important role to play in achieving greater social equality. In this book, she offers a new way of addressing dilemmas of justice and equality in multiethnic, multicultural societies, intervening at this critical moment when so many Western countries are poised to abandon multiculturalism. Theories of Democracy builds on Robert Dahl's observation that there is no single theory of democracy; only theories. Beyond the broad commitment to rule by the majority, democracy involves a set of contentious debates concerning the proper function and scope of power, equality, freedom, justice, and interests. In this anthology, Ronald J. Terchek and Thomas C. Conte have brilliantly assembled the works of classical, modern, and contemporary commentators to illustrate the deep and diverse roots of the democratic ideal, as well as to provide materials for thinking about the way some contemporary theories build on different traditions of democratic theorizing. The arguments addressed in Theories of Democracy appear in the voices of authors who have championed influential theories concerning the opportunities and dangers associated with democratic politics. In this collection, Terchek and Conte have selected excerpts not as a means for promoting a particular way of looking at democracy, but rather they have wisely chosen works that will enable students to carry on an informed discourse on the meaning and purposes of democratic principles and practices. Theories of Democracy is a must for every student of democracy's past, present, and future.--Terence Ball, Arizona State University

MotherKind : a novel by Jayne Anne Phillips Alfred A. Knopf, London, England, 2000
"MotherKind is the story of Kate, whose care for her terminally ill mother coincides with the birth of her first child and the early months of a young marriage. She must, in a single year, come to terms with radiant beginnings and profound loss. MotherKind is a delicately layered narrative in which the details of daily life resonate with import and meaning.". "MotherKind immerses us in a very contemporary situation, yet deals with timeless themes. Even as Kate's relationship with her mother embodies her childhood and adolescence in another place, she must decide what "home" is, and how to translate all she has come from into what she will carry forward. As her baby grows and her mother becomes increasingly ill, Kate realizes how inextricably linked we are, even in separation - across generations, cultures, time; across death itself."--BOOK JACKET.

Tous les vivants - Le Crime de Quiet Dell Jayne-Anne Phillips [Phillips, Jayne-Anne] Editions de l'Olivier, 2013
Chicago, 1931.

However, when tragedy strikes, not only is Caprianna's tenuous world shattered, she finds out her husband is harboring secrets of his own. But just when she thought she was at her lowest ebb, fate steps in. Can love rise out of the ashes? "Detoured" is a tale of family secrets, which span two generations. What happens when a secret love does not die, but just detours? Both Sonnet and her mother Yolanda have more in common than they think. Is it ever too late for love? This is a story of the power and strength of love.

MAGGIE A GIRL OF THE STREETS AND OTHER SHORT FICTION BY STEPHEN CRANE By Stephen Crane Bantam Classics, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 2006
Stephen Crane's first novel is the tale of a pretty young slum girl driven to brutal excesses by poverty and loneliness. It was considered so sexually frank and realistic, that the book had to be privately printed at first. It and GEORGE'S MOTHER, the shorter novel that follows in this edition, were eventually hailed as the first genuine expressions of Naturalism in American letters and established their creator as the American apostle of an artistic revolution which was to alter the shape and destiny of civilization itself.

"In Walk Till the Dogs Get Mean, Adrian Blevins and Karen Salyer McElmurray collect essays from today's finest established and emerging writers with roots in Appalachia. Together, these essays take the theme of silencing in Appalachian culture, whether the details of that theme revolve around faith, class, work, or family legacies. In essays that take wide-ranging forms-making this an ideal volume for creative nonfiction classes-contributors write about families left behind, hard-earned educations, selves transformed, identities chosen, and risks taken. They consider the courage required for the inheritances they carry. Toughness and generosity alike characterize works by Dorothy Allison, bell hooks, Silas House, and others. These writers travel far away from the boundaries of a traditional Appalachia, and then circle back-always-to the mountains that made each of them the distinctive thinking and feeling people they ultimately became. The essays in Walk Till the Dogs Get Mean are an individual and collective act of courage. Contributors: Dorothy Allison, Rob Amberg, Pinckney Benedict, Kathryn Stripling Byer, Sheldon Lee Compton, Michael Croley, Richard Currey, Joyce Dyer, Sarah Einstein, Connie May Fowler, RJ Gibson, Mary Crockett Hill, bell hooks, Silas House, Jason Howard, David Huddle, Tennessee Jones, Lisa Lewis, Jeff Mann, Chris Offutt, Ann Pancake, Jayne Anne Phillips, Melissa Range, Carter Sickels, Aaron Smith, Jane Springer, Ida Stewart, Jacinda Townsend, Jessie van Eerden, Julia Watts, Charles Dodd White, and Crystal Wilkinson"-- Résumé de l'éditeur

Review "A beautifully patterned novel . . . an enduring literary achievement . . . astonishing."— The New York Times "Machine Dreams, in its wisdom and its compassionate, utterly unsentimental rendering of the American condition, will rank as one of the great books of [the] decade. Jayne Anne Phillips is a blessing."—Robert Stone"An intensely Ameican, beautifully written first novel. . . . It carries the strength of myth, and yet is utterly of our times."— The Wall Street Journal From the Trade Paperback edition. Product Description In her highly acclaimed debut novel, the bestselling author of Shelter introduces the Hampsons, an ordinary, small-town American family profoundly affected by the extraordinary events of history. Here is a stunning chronicle that begins with the Depression and ends with the Vietnam War, revealed in the thoughts, dreams, and memories of each family member. Mitch struggles to earn a living as Jeans becomes the main breadwinner, working to coplete college and raise the family. While the couple fight to keep their marriage intact, their daughter Danner and son Billy forge a sibling bond of uncommon strength. When Billy goes off to Vietnam, Danner becomes the sole bond linking her family, whose dissolution mirrors the fractured state of America in the 1960s. Deeply felt and vividly imagined, this lyrical novel is "among the wisest of a generation to grapple with a war that maimed us all" ( The Village Voice ), by a master of contemporary fiction. From the Trade Paperback edition.
