Paul and the Hermeneutics of Faith (T&T Clark Cornerstones) Francis Watson; Bloomsbury Publishing Bloomsbury T & T Clark an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2016
"In recent years, scholars from both Christian and Jewish backgrounds have tried to rethink the relationship between earliest Christianity and its Jewish milieu; and Paul has emerged as a central figure in this debate. Francis Watson contributes to this scholarly discussion by seeing Paul and his Jewish contemporaries as, above all, readers of scripture. However different the conclusions they draw, they all endeavour to make sense of the same normative scriptural texts - in the belief that, as they interpret the scriptural texts, the texts will themselves interpret and illuminate the world of contemporary experience. In that sense, Paul and his contemporaries are standing on common ground. Far from relativizing their differences, however, it is this common ground that makes such differences possible. This book seeks to show how three distinct bodies of literature in fact constitute a single intertextual field. It is therefore necessary to dismantle artificial scholarly boundaries between the Pauline letters, other extant Jewish writings of the period, and the scriptural texts themselves. The method adopted is to set a Pauline and a non-Pauline reading of a scriptural text alongside one another, to compare the ways in which the different readings seek to realize the semantic potential of the scriptural text, and to construct communal identity on that basis. Contrary to the view that these early readers merely impose their own pre-existing viewpoints on the scriptural texts, it becomes clear that they are profoundly engaged in fundamental hermeneutical issues. In this new edition Watson provides a comprehensive new introduction to respond to critics of the previous edition, as well as numerous updates and refinements throughout the text."--Bloomsbury Publishing In recent years, scholars from both Christian and Jewish backgrounds have tried to rethink the relationship between earliest Christianity and its Jewish milieu; and Paul has emerged as a central figure in this debate. The Biblical Tour of Hell (The Library of New Testament Studies) Hauge, Matthew Ryan, author; Hauge, Matthew Ryan. Biblical tour of hell: the parable of Dives and Lazarus Bloomsbury Publishing PLC; Bloomsbury T&T Clark; Bloomsbury T & T Clark, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2013
"It is difficult to underestimate the significance of the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31 within the biblical tradition. Although hell occupies a prominent position in popular Christian rhetoric today, it plays a relatively minor role in the Christian canon. The most important biblical texts that explicitly describe the fate of the dead are in the Synoptic Gospels. Yet among these passages, only the Lukan tradition is intent on explicitly describing the abode of the dead; it is the only biblical tour of hell. Hauge examines the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31, uniquely the only 'parable' that is set within a supernatural context. The parables characteristically feature concrete realities of first-century Mediterranean life, but the majority of Luke 16:19-31 is narrated from the perspective of the tormented dead. This volume demonstrates that the distinctive features of the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus are the result of a strategic imitation, creative transformation, and Christian transvaluation of the descent of Odysseus into the house of hades in Odyssey Book 11, the literary model par excellence of postmortem revelation in antiquity."--Bloomsbury Publishing It is difficult to underestimate the significance of the story of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31 within the biblical tradition. Gospel Interpretation and the Q-Hypothesis (The Library of New Testament Studies Book 573) Mogens Müller, Heike Omerzu, Chris Keith, Michael Labahn Bloomsbury T&T Clark an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, London, UK, 2018
The Q-Hypothesis has functioned as a mainstay of study of the synoptic gospels for many years. Increasingly it comes under fire. In this volume leading proponents of Q, as well as of the case against Q, offer the latest arguments based on the latest research into this literary conundrum. The contributors to the volume include John Kloppenborg, Christopher Tuckett, Clare Rothschild, Mark Goodacre, and Francis Watson. The Q-Hypothesis is examined in depth and the discussion moves back and forth over Q's strengths and weaknesses. As such the volume sheds light on how the gospels were composed, and how we can view them in their final literary forms.

The re-enchantment of the West. Vol. 2, Alternative spiritualities, sacralization, popular culture, and occulture Christopher H. Partridge Bloomsbury T&T Clark, 1, 2006
<br> The Re-Enchantment of the West challenges those theories that predict widespread secularization beyond traditional institutional religiosity. Spiritualities are emerging that are not only quite different from the those forms of religion that are in decline, but are often defined over against them and articulated and passed on in ways quite different from those of traditional religion. In particular, it is argued that such contemporary Western spirituality is fed by a constantly replenished reservoir of ideas, practices, and methodologies, which is here termed 'occulture'. Moreover, such occultural ideas both feed into and are resourced by popular culture. Indeed, popular occulture is a key feature of the re-enchantment of the West. <p>Demonstrating the significance and ubiquity of these ideas, this book examines, for example, healthcare and nursing, contemporary environmentalism, psychedelia and drug use, the Internet and cyberspirituality, belief in UFOs and extraterrestrial life, demonology and the contemporary fascination with the figure of Satan, the heavy metal subculture, popular apocalypticism, and millennial violence.<br> </p>

An Introduction to the Study of Paul (T&T Clark Approaches to Biblical Studies) Horrell, David G. Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 2000
This tried and tested introduction to Paul needs little introduction of its own. After considering Paul’s importance and influence, and the important sources for the study of Paul, the volume covers the following key topics: the earliest period of Christianity – from Jesus to Paul; Paul’s life before and after his ‘conversion’; his individual letters; the major elements of his theology; his attitude to Israel and the Jewish law; perspectives on the Pauline assemblies, including their socio-economic location, meeting places, and attitudes towards women; and Paul’s legacy in the New Testament and beyond. The volume has been revised throughout and fully updated with respect to bibliography, and to presenting the latest debates surrounding Paul’s thought in a manageable format – including those around ‘old’ and ‘new’ perspectives, with a new section on the ‘radical’ new Jewish perspective, and those related to the socio-economic status and character of the Pauline assemblies. The helpful study questions and reading lists have also been revised.

Sartre and Theology (Philosophy and Theology) Kate Kirkpatrick Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Philosophy and Theology, 1, 2017
"Jean-Paul Sartre was one of the twentieth century's most prominent atheists. But his philosophy was informed by theological writers and themes in ways that have not previously been acknowledged. In Sartre and Theology, Kirkpatrick examines Sartre's philosophical formation and rarely discussed early work, demonstrating how, and which, theology shaped Sartre's thinking. She also shows that Sartre's philosophy -- especially Being and Nothingness and Existentialism is A Humanism -- contributed to several prominent twentieth-century theologies, examining Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, and Liberation theologians's rebuttals and appropriations of Sartre. For philosophers, this work opens up an unmined vein of influence on Sartre's work which illuminates his conceptual divergences from the German phenomenological tradition. And for theologians, it offers insights into a theologically informed atheism which provoked responses from some of the twentieth-century's greatest theologians -- an atheism from which we can still learn much today."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

nexusstc/Job: An Introduction and Study Guide Where Shall Wisdom be Found?/8bed3f8e1f01d137cf0359317400b865.pdf
Job : an Introduction and Study Guide : Where Shall Wisdom Be Found? Dell, Katharine J. Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc; T&T Clark, T&T Clark study guides to the Old Testament -- volume 14, T & T Clark study guides to the Old Testament -- v. 14., London, England, 2017
In the light of dramatic new interpretative approaches to the Bible this guide to Job follows not only a range of new approaches to the text but also addresses the traditional historical questions and other topical issues. Dell particularly highlights the problem of genre in understanding Job. She shows how problematic the term ‘wisdom’ is for this unique book, and argues that its radical sentiments earn it, rather, the title of ‘parody’. Of all the biblical books it comes closest to tragedy, raising profound questions about its nature and place in the biblical canon. Job's relationship to its ancient Near Eastern counterparts, notably in ancient Mesopotamia, are also closely examined and key theological themes that characterize the book are explored. Finally different approaches - feminist, liberationist, ecological and psychological - are outlined so as to illuminate and inform our own personal readings and generate ever fresh understandings of this enigmatic text.

The Acts of The Apostles: An Introduction and Study Guide: Taming the Tongues of Fire (T&T Clark’s Study Guides to the New Testament) Matthews, Shelly Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury T&T Clark, T & T Clark study guides to the New Testament -- volume 5, T & T Clark study guides to the New Testament -- v. 5., London, England, 2017
"The book of Acts opens with the dramatic story of tongues of flame descending upon believers at Pentecost and the prophecy of an egalitarian dispensation of the Spirit being fulfilled. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, we become aware of a tension between the socially egalitarian promise of the Pentecost story and the author's underlying concern to provide reassurance for his elite patron Theophilus that Jesus followers do not disturb the existing social order. In this guide, Acts is read as a struggle to tame the tongues of fire. Acts mutes the egalitarian promise of the Spirit through presenting an 'orderly account' (as its author calls it) of the Jesus movement that appeals to elite sensibilities. And, at the same time, the narrative contains contradictions, gaps and fissures that suggest the outlines of a more complex, and even subversive, religious movement."--Page 4 de la couverture

‘Behold, the Angels Came and Served Him’ : A Compositional Analysis of Angels in Matthew by Kristian A. Bendoraitis Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, New York, 2015
Angels have been analyzed in Christological research due to their primary function as messengers and mediators between heaven and earth. Their role in the Gospel narratives, however, has been largely unexplored. Utilizing the Old Testament and sources from the Second Temple period to illustrate the variety of angel traditions, Bendoraitis identifies how these traditions are reflected in Matthew's Gospel and interprets the passages in which angels appear or are represented, resulting in a detailed exegesis of those passages which specifically mention angels. Each reference is critically analyzed in view of its role in the Gospel's narrative and in light of Matthew's redactional hand. In addition, each chapter is accompanied by a discussion of relevant traditions of angels in order to illustrate how Matthew's use of angels has facilitated his Gospel's message. The examination concludes by postulating three factors in the inclusion of angel traditions in Matthew's narrative, pertaining both to Matthew's Christology and worldview. (Publisher)

Christology: A Guide for the Perplexed (Guides for the Perplexed) Alan J. Spence Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 1, 2015
Today Christology is of concern to both New Testament scholars and theologians alike and continues to provoke debate within the Church. Christology: A Guide for the Perplexed examines the key debates and defining moments in the early Church and the Reformation. After a brief introduction providing a basic definition of Christology, this historical background provides an essential foundation on which to outline later developments in Christology. Alan Spence then considers the Quest for the Historical Jesus, the work of the major theologians in this area including Barth and Schleiermacher, and from the present day, N.T. Wright and Pannenberg, and explores the contemporary arguments within the field of Christology.

Messianism among Jews and Christiansm : biblical and historical studies William Horbury Bloomsbury T & T Clark, T & T Clark Cornerstones, Second edition, London [England, 2016
William Horbury considers the issue of messianism as it arises in Jewish and Christian tradition. Whilst Horbury's primary focus is the Herodian period and the New Testament, he presents a broader historical trajectory, looking back to the Apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, and onward to Judaism and Christianity in the Roman empire. Within this framework Horbury treats such central themes as messianism in the Apocrypha and pseudepigrapha, the Son of man and Pauline hopes for a new Jerusalem, and Jewish and Christian messianism in the second century. Neglected topics are also given due consideration, including suffering and messianism in synagogue poetry, and the relation of Christian and Jewish messianism with conceptions of the church and of antichrist and with the cult of Christ and of the saints. Throughout, Horbury sets messianism in a broader religious and political context and explores its setting in religion and in the conflict of political theories. This new edition features a new extended introduction which updates and resituates the volume within the context of current scholarship

nexusstc/Sex in the Family: First-Degree Incest and the Hebrew Bible/2e387676f8edb3edc9dc40982a4874ee.pdf
Sex in the Family : First-Degree Incest and the Hebrew Bible Johanna Stiebert, Claudia V. Camp, Andrew Mein Bloomsbury T&T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies, 1st ed, London, 2016
‘Incest’ refers to illegal sexual relations between family members. Its precise contours, however, are culturally specific. Hence, an illegal incestuous union in one social context may be a legal close-kin union in another. First-degree sexual unions, between a parent and child, or between siblings, are most widely prohibited and abhorred. This book discusses all overt and covert first-degree incest relations in the Hebrew Bible and also probes the significance of gaps and what these imply about projected sexual and social values. As the dominant opinion on the origin of first-degree incest continues to be shaped, new voices such as those of queer and post-feminist criticism have joined the conversation. It navigates not only the incest laws of Leviticus and the narratives of Lot and his daughters and of Amnon and Tamar but pursues subtler intimations of first-degree sexual unions, such as between Adam and his (absent but arguably implied) mother, Haran and Terah’s wife, Ham and Noah. In pursuing the psycho-social values that may be drawn from the Hebrew Bible regarding first-degree incest, this book will provide a thorough review of incest studies from the early 20th century onward and explain and assess the contribution of very recent critical approaches from queer and post-feminist perspectives. This monograph explores first-degree sexual relations alongside the notion of incest as depicted in the contemporary West, the Hebrew Bible and the spaces in between. ‘Incest’ refers to illegal sexual relations between family members. Its precise contours, however, are culturally specific. Hence, an illegal incestuous union in one cultural context may be a legal close-kin union in another. First-degree sexual unions, between a parent and child, or between siblings, are most widely prohibited and abhorred. And yet, such sexual unions are legislated, narrated, hinted at, or glaringly omitted, in world literature - including in the Hebrew Bible. Not only has the dominant opinion regarding the origins of first-degree incest changed –from its being regarded a natural desire that is suppressed for social benefit, to being considered an aberrant and unnatural manifestation triggered by failed infant-bonding –new voices, such as those of queer and post-feminist criticism have joined the conversation. This book discusses all overt and covert first-degree incest relations in the Hebrew Bible and also probes the significance of gaps and what these imply about projected sexual and social values. This book navigates the incest prohibitions of Leviticus (as well as Deuteronomy), the condemnations of Ezekiel and the narratives of Lot and his daughters and of Amnon and Tamar. Alongside this, it pursues also subtler intimations of first-degree sexual unions, such as that between Adam and his (absent, but arguably implied) mother, between Haran and Terah’s wife and between Ham and Noah. In pursuing the psycho-social values that may be drawn from the Hebrew Bible regarding first-degree sex, this book will provide a thorough review of incest studies from the early twentieth century onwards and assess the contribution of very recent critical approaches from queer and post-feminist perspectives.

This Addition To Our Popular Guides For The Perplexed Series Tackles A Subject That Is Enjoying Renewed Debate: Christianity, Along With Judaism And Islam, Claims That The Universe Is Not A Brute Fact. It Is 'created'. But What Do We Mean By 'creation'? Do We Mean That The Universe Is 'designed'? Is It The Product Of An Evolutionary Process? Christian Family and Contemporary Society (Ecclesiological Investigations Book 21) Nicu Dumitraşcu (editor) Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Ecclesiological investigations -- Volume 21, London, England, 2015
This collection of essays integrates a broad spectrum of geographical, denominational, and interdisciplinary perspectives, and analyses the relationship between family and religion in its various contexts, both historical and contemporary. Divided into four key parts, the contributors address first the biblical and patristic background of the family construct, while the second part reveals denominational and ecumenical perspectives on marriage and the family. The third part sketches a sociological profile of the family in some European countries and addresses pastoral and sacramental issues connected with it. The final part places the Christian family in the context of contemporary society.

The Bible and the Qur'an : Biblical Figures in the Islamic Tradition John Kaltner; Younus Y. Mirza Bloomsbury, Bloomsbury T&T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury UK, New York, 2018
"Not everyone realizes that some of the key figures of Christianity (for example Jesus and Mary) and Judaism (Abraham, Moses) feature prominently in the Qur'an. The Bible and the Qur'an provides an introduction to and complete overview of all the figures and groups who are mentioned in both the Bible and the Qur'an. The principal focus is on the similarities and differences between the presentation of these characters in the two texts, with focus placed on how they appear in the Islamic text. Many of the individuals/groups discussed are also treated in other Islamic sources, most notably the collections known as "The Stories of the Prophets," and these references are also included. Each figure or group that appears in both texts receives its own entry which includes the following items: (1) a list of relevant Qur'an passages; (2) a description of how the individual/group is presented in the Qur'an and Stories of the Prophets; (3) questions/issues to consider; (4) suggestions for further readings, when relevant. An introductory section provides a basic orientation to the Bible, the Qur'an and other Islamic sources by discussing their contents, role, and how they are used and studied."--Bloomsbury Publishing The Bible and the Qur'an provides an overview of all the figures and groups who are mentioned in both the Bible and the Qur'an. Essential Trinitarianism: Schleiermacher As Trinitarian Theologian (t&t Clark Explorations In Reformed Theology) Shelli M. Poe, Paul Dafydd Jones, Paul T. Nimmo Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, T & T Clark explorations in reformed theology, London, UK, 2017
"Many scholars believe that Friedrich Schleiermacher relegates the doctrine of the Trinity to an appendix at the end of his magnum opus, The Christian Faith (1830/31); his alleged disregard for the Trinity is the supposed death knell for serious consideration of his work within the history of Christian thought. This volume argues that Schleiermacher not only calls for the doctrine's revitalization, but also makes it the centrepiece of Protestant Christianity. Following Schleiermacher's own thought experiment, Poe presents his doctrine of God in reverse order of its original presentation. Her examination centres on the Trinity, treating it as the keystone of the entire work, while analysing the divine attributes: love and wisdom, justice and holiness, eternity, omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. When viewed from the standpoint of the conclusion, the Trinitarian shape of Schleiermacher's theology comes to the fore. What emerges is a middle way between merely economic Trinitarianism and a full-fledged development of immanent Trinitarianism, examining divine personhood and the union of the divine with humanity. The central thesis of this work runs boldly counter to the prevailing academic account of Schleiermacher's doctrine of the Trinity, and offers an innovative and constructive reading. Readers will be privy to a fresh look at Schleiermacher's doctrine of God and its importance for contemporary theology."--Back cover

Thinking And Seeing With Women In Revelation (the Library Of New Testament Studies) Lynn R. Huber Bloomsbury T...T Clark, The Library of New Testament Studies, 1, 2013
"Lynn R. Huber argues that the visionary aspect of Revelation, with its use of metaphorical thinking and language, is the crux of the text's persuasive power. Emerging from a context that employs imagery to promote imperial mythologies, Revelation draws upon a long tradition of using feminine imagery as a tool of persuasion. It does so even while shaping a community identity in contrast to the dominant culture and in exclusive relationship with the Lamb. By drawing upon the work of medieval and modern visionaries, Huber answers acall to examine the way 'real' readers engage with biblical texts. Revealing how Revelation continues to persuade audiences through appeals to the visual and provocative imagery she offers a new sense of how the text metaphorical language simultaneously limits and invites new meaning, unfurling a range of interpretations."--Bloomsbury Publishing Lynn R. Josephus’ Interpretation of the Books of Samuel Michael Avioz Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, The library of second temple studies -- 86, T & T Clark library of biblical studies, Library of Second Temple studies -- 86., T & T Clark library of biblical studies, London, New York, England, 2015
Since the seventies, no study has examined the methodologies of Josephus' rewriting of an entire biblical book as part of his Judean Antiquities. This book attempts to fill this vacuum by exploring Josephus' adaptation of the books of Samuel, penetrating the exegetical strategies he employs to modify the biblical stories for his intended audience. Through meticulous comparison of the biblical narrative and Josephus' Antiquities, broader issues such as Josephus' attitude towards monarchy and women gradually come to light, challenging long-held assumptions. This definitive exploration of Josephus' rewriting of Samuel illuminates the encounter between the ancient texts and its relevance to scholarly discourse today.

"Images from the ancient Near East are an important though generally underutilized source of data for interpreting the Hebrew Bible and the cultural context from which it emerged. The essays in this volume highlight the ways that ancient Near Eastern iconography can inform exegesis. This aim is accomplished through case studies in iconographic exegesis that exhibit sound methodologies for relating images and texts. Since the 1970s, biblical scholars have been turning increasingly to iconography as a source for understanding the religion, history and literature of the ancient Near East. The essays in this volume tackle two thorny issues: 1) how images reflect the cultures that produce them and 2) the nature of the relationship between images and texts, both within discrete cultures and among different cultures. Until now, there have been relatively few methodologically self-conscious treatments of ancient iconography and its relationship to the biblical text. So this volume addresses a clear need for demonstrating transparent and consistent methods for iconographic work among biblical scholars"-- Provided by publisher

Paul at the Crossroads of Cultures: Theologizing in the Space Between (The Library of New Testament Studies) Kathy Ehrensperger Bloomsbury T & T Clark, The Library of New Testament Studies, 456, 2013
"Based on recent studies in intercultural communication Kathy Ehrensperger applies the paradigm of multilingualism, which includes the recognition of cultural distinctiveness, to the study of Paul. Paul's role as apostle to the nations is seen as the role of a go-between - as that of cultural translator. This role requires that he is fully embedded in his own tradition but must also be able to appreciate and understand aspects of gentile culture. Paul is viewed as involved in a process in which the meaning of the Christ event is being negotiated 'in the space between' cultures, with their diverse cultural coding systems and cultural encyclopaedias. It is argued that this is not a process of imposing Jewish culture on gentiles at the expense of gentile identity, nor is it a process of eradication of Jewish identity. Rather, Paul's theologizing in the space between implies the task of negotiating the meaning of the Christ event in relation to, and in appreciation of both, Jewish and gentile identity."--Bloomsbury Publishing Based on recent studies in intercultural communication Kathy Ehrensperger applies the paradigm of multilingualism, which includes the recognition of cultural distinctiveness, to the study of Paul. T&T Clark Companion to Atonement (Bloomsbury Companions Book 5) Adam J. Johnson (editor) Bloomsbury T&T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, Bloomsbury companions, 5, New York, 2017
The __T&T Clark Companion to Atonement__ establishes a vision for the doctrine of the atonement as a unified yet extraordinarily rich event calling for the church's full appropriation. Most edited volumes on this doctrine focus on one aspect of the work of Christ (for example, Girard, Feminist thought, Penal Substitution or divine violence). The Companion is unique in that every essay seeks to both appropriate and stimulate the church's understanding of the manifold nature of Christ's death and resurrection. The essays are divided into four main sections: 1) dogmatic location, 2) chapters on the Old and New Testaments, 3) major theologians and 4) contemporary developments. The first set of essays explore the inter-relationship between the atonement and other Christian doctrines (for example Trinity, Christology and Pneumatology), opening up yet further avenues of inquiry. Essays on key theologians eschew reductionism, striving to bring out the nuances and breadth of the contribution. The same is true of the biblical essays. The final section explores more recent developments within the doctrine (for example the work of Rene Girard, and the ongoing reflection on "Holy Saturday"). The book is comprised of 18 major essays, and an A-Z section containing shorter dictionary-length entries on a much broader range of topics. The result is a combination of in-depth analysis and breadth of scope, making this a benchmark work for further studies in the doctrine.

Ecological Aspects of War : Engagements with Biblical Texts Anne Elvey; Keith Dyer (editors) Bloomsbury T & T Clark, an imprint of Bloomsbury Academic Plc, Bloomsbury UK, New York, 2017
"In this book Australian biblical scholars engage with texts from Genesis to Revelation. With experience in the Earth Bible Project and the Ecological Hermeneutics section of the Society of Biblical Literature, contributors address impacts of war in more-than-human contexts and habitats, in conversation with selected biblical texts. Aspects of contemporary conflicts and the questions they pose for biblical studies are explored through cultural motifs such as the Rainbow Serpent of Australian Indigenous spiritualities, security and technological control, the loss of home, and ongoing colonial violence toward Indigenous people. Alongside these approaches, contributors ask: how do trees participate in war? Wow do we deal with the enemy? What after-texts of the biblical text speak into and from our contemporary world? David Horrell, University of Exeter, UK, responds to the collection, addressing the concept of herem in the Hebrew Bible, and drawing attention to the Pauline corpus. The volume asks: can creative readings of biblical texts contribute to the critical task of living together peaceably and sustainably."--Bloomsbury Publishing In this book Australian biblical scholars engage with texts from Genesis to Revelation. The Artistic Dimension: Literary Explorations Of The Hebrew Bible (the Library Of Hebrew Bible/old Testament Studies) Keith Bodner, Claudia V. Camp, Andrew Mein Bloomsbury Publishing Bloomsbury T&T Clark, The Library of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament Studies, 2013
"This volume presents a collection of essays aimed at further integration of literary analysis in the study of the Hebrew Bible. In three sections, Bodner studies a range of texts in order to illustrate that literary analysis has value for exploring numerous issues in the discipline, including text-critical problems, the Deuteronomistic History, and Chronicles. Beginning with a discussion of how literary analysis is a vital, yet neglected, component of textual criticism, Bodner then offers a sustained engagement with one particular section of the Hebrew Bible, the so-called "ark narrative" of 1 Samuel 4-6. Other areas of the Hebrew Bible are subsequently explored, including a sample of the historiographic material in the Deuteronomistic History and a lengthy text from the book of Proverbs. Part four turns to the often neglected books of 1 & 2 Chronicles, illustrating how the Chronicler's work is a congenial site for literary study. The assembled essays petition for a heightened awareness of the artistic achievement of the Hebrew Bible and illustrate that literary thinking is a necessary component for biblical interpretation." from publisher's website

Salvation as praxis : a practical theology of salvation for a multi-faith world Morris, Wayne Bloomsbury Academic;Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2014
Will People Of Other Faiths Be 'saved' And To What Extent Should The Response To This Question Shape Christian Engagements With People Of Other Faiths? Historically, The Predominant Answer To These Questions Has Been That The Person Of Another Faith Will Not Be Saved And Is Therefore In Need Of Conversion To Christianity For Their Salvation To Be Possible. Consequently, It Has Been Understood To Be The Obligation Of Christian Persons To Convert People Of Other Faiths. More Recent Theologies Of Religions For The Past Half Century And More Have Sought To Reconsider These Approaches To Soteriology. This Has Sometimes Led To A Reaffirmation Of The Status Quo And At Other Times To An Alternative Soteriological Understanding. In Seeking To Articulate Soteriologies That Make Logical And Doctrinal Sense, Too Often These New Approaches To Salvation And People Of Other Faiths Have Paid Little Attention To Questions Of Practice. Drawing On Alternative Understandings Of Soteriology As Deification, Healing, And Liberation, Each Perspective Having Ancient Roots In The Christian Tradition, It Is Argued That Salvation Can Be Understood As Form Of Concrete Earthly Practice. Understood In This Way, This Book Considers How These Alternative Theologies Of Salvation Might Shape Christian Practices In A Way That Departs From A History In Which The Person Of Another Faith Has Been Perceived As A Threat To Christianity And Therefore In Need Of Conversion. Further It Asks How The Complex Multi-faith World Of The Twenty-first Century Might Better Inform And Shape The Way In Which Christian Theologies Frame Soteriological Understandings. Part 1: Why A Practical Theology Of Salvation? -- A Practical Theological Perspective -- Salvations In The Christian Tradition -- Deconstructing Historic Practices Of Salvation -- Salvation In Contemporary Theologies Of Religions -- Part 2: Salvation As Praxis -- 'communion And Otherness': Salvation As Deification -- Embodied Well-being: Salvation As Healing -- 'god Of The Oppressed': Salvation As Liberation Wayne Morris. nexusstc/Science in Theology: Encounters between Science and the Christian Tradition/4b0ac0144d764b3144f8f35d591cfed1.pdf
Science in theology : encounters between Science and the Christian Tradition Neil Messer; T&T Clark (1821-2003) Bloomsbury T & T Clark, First published in Great Britain 2020, London ; New York ; Oxford ; New Delhi ; Sydney, 2020
If we wish to understand ourselves and the world in relation to God, what contribution to our understanding should we expect from a Christian tradition with its roots in the Bible, and what should we expect from the natural sciences? Neil Messer sets out five types of answer to that question. The responses range from the view that the Christian tradition has nothing to contribute, through various forms of dialogue, to the claim that science is irrelevant to theological understanding. This classification scheme is illustrated and tested by extended explorations of three topics in the science and theology field: how to think about God's action in the world, how to make theological sense of the suffering and destruction involved in the evolution of life, and how theology should respond to the scientific study of religion. The classification offers a way to understand and evaluate these debates, and the discussion of specific examples demonstrates the strengths and weaknesses of each type of approach. The book concludes with suggestions for how readers might use this scheme to guide their own work on science and theology. For students and researchers in science and theology, this book offers three things: a tool for understanding specific debates in science and theology, critical surveys of some of the most important debates in the field, and a concise guide to ways of setting up encounters of theology with science.

Memory and the Jesus Tradition (The Reception of Jesus in the First Three Centuries Book 2) Alan Kirk, Helen K. Bond, Chris Keith, Jens Schroeter Bloomsbury T & T Clark, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2018
"Alan Kirk argues that memory theory, in its social, cultural, and cognitive dimensions, is able to provide a comprehensive account of the origins and history of the Jesus tradition, one capable of displacing the moribund form-critical model. He shows that memory research gives new leverage on a range of classic problems in gospels, historical Jesus, and Christian origins scholarship. This volume brings together 12 essays published between 2001 and 2016, newly revised for this edition and organized under the rubrics of: 'Memory and the Formation of the Jesus Tradition'; 'Memory and Manuscript'; 'Memory and Historical Jesus Research'; and 'Memory in 2nd Century Gospel Writing'. The introductory essay, written for this volume, argues that the old form critical model, in marginalizing memory, abandoned the one factor actually capable of accounting for the origins of the gospel tradition, its manifestation in oral and written media, and its historical trajectory"-- Provided by publisher.

nexusstc/Space, Time and Resurrection/cbbe37528fce69a679653f1ee4c6cfc3.pdf
Space, Time and Resurrection Torrance, Thomas F Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury T&T Clark, 2019
In this sequel to Space, Time and Incarnation, Thomas F. Torrance sets out the biblical approach to the Resurrection in terms of the intrinsic significance of the resurrected one, Jesus; and demonstrates that the Resurrection is entirely consistent with who Jesus was and what he did. The Resurrection is thus taken realistically, and treated as of the same nature, in the integration of physical and spiritual existence, as the death of Christ. All this is elucidated in the context of modern scientific thought, in such a way as to show that far from being frightened by modern science into a compromise of the New Testament's message of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in body, it actually allows us to take its full measure. This classic volume from one of the premier English-speaking theologians of the 20th century remains an important contribution to the field of systematic theology. For this Cornerstones edition, the preface is written by Paul D. Molnar.

Walking in the Truth: Perseverers and Deserters: The First, Second, and Third Letters of John (NT in Context Commentaries) Sloyan, Gerard S. , 1919- Valley Forge, Pa.: Trinity Press International, The New Testament in context, Valley Forge, Pa, Pennsylvania, 1995
The Most Usual Interpretation Put On The Three Epistles Is That They Were Written In The Sequence 1, 2, And 3 And Came After The Gospel. ... The Present Writer Has Great Respect For Proponents Of This Theory But Does Not Espouse It Or Indeed Any Other On The Circumstances Of Composition. The Attempt Here Is Simply To Explore What The Three Epistles May Be Saying When Their Meaning Is Obscure And To Make Accessible Their Mesage To The Church Of The Present When It Is Not.there Are So Many Echoes Of Biblical Passages From Both Testaments In This Brief Body Of Literature That It Would Be Tedious To Cite Them All. A Selection Has Been Made. The Remarkable Thing Is How Much Of It From The Newer Testament Is Extra-johannine. ... In All, The Field Is So Richly Planted That It Is An Exercise In Arrogance To Attempt To Harvest An Additional Yield. The Present Writer's Comfort Must Be The Ancient Tag Line, Non Nova Sed Nove. There Is Nothing New In What Follows But One Thing Or Another May Be Expressed, Without Novelty, In A New Way.--introduction To The Letters, Pages 3-6. Introduction To The Letters -- The First Letter Of John -- The Second Letter Of John -- The Third Letter Of John. Gerard S. Sloyan. Includes Bibliographical References (p. 77-78) And Indexes.

This Jesus : martyr, Lord, Messiah Markus N. A Bockmuehl Bloomsbury T&T Clark, T et T Clark Academic Paperbacks, London, 2004
This concise but very thought-provoking work on the historical Jesus by Markus Bockmuehl posits that the historical man of Jesus cannot be separated from the Christ of faith. Taking a traditional argument and imprinting it with the finest scholarship, Bockmuehl refers to a wide range of canonical and non-canonical historical texts, ranging from Roman historians Tacitus and Suetonius to Jewish historian Josephus, and through Christian sources as well as the Gospels. His conclusion suggests that Jesus was indeed the Messiah, but not the Messiah expected by his contemporaries.

nexusstc/Beyond the Reformation?: Authority, Primacy and Unity in the Conciliar Tradition/3ccbb3308b0c3583190b23e0ece5fbb9.pdf
Beyond the Reformation? : Authority, Primacy and Unity in the Conciliar Tradition Paul D. L. Avis Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2008
<p><b>Beyond the Reformation?</b> sheds fresh light on divisive issues of authority in the Christian Church and puts them in a new historical and ecumenical perspective. Against the background of the perennial tension between the mystical and the institutional dynamics in the life of the Church, it goes beyond the tragic divisions of the Reformation era in two major ways. First, it examines the power struggles of the medieval period, the largely abortive attempts at reform, and the theological solutions to apparently intractable divisions that were proposed by the Conciliar Movement and enacted by the reforming councils of the fifteenth century. It shows how the legacy of conciliar theology was both continued and modified by the Continental and Anglican Reformers and how this has shaped the churches in the modern world. It examines the question of continuity and discontinuity in the Reformation, seeing that event as an unresolved argument within the family of the Western Church. But this book also seeks to move beyond the Reformation in a second way. Drawing on Roman Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican theology, the book explores the theme of conciliar and primatial authority in relation to the ecumenical quest for reconciliation and unity in the fragmented Church of today.</p> <p>In this major, ground-breaking work, Anglican theologian and ecumenist Paul Avis adds to his repertoire of studies of authority in the Christian Church, brings together historical, confessional and ecumenical aspects of ecclesiology, and charts a course for convergence between the major traditions on the thorny questions of authority, primacy and unity.</p>

nexusstc/T&T Clark Handbook of Neo-Calvinism (T&T Clark Handbooks)/cc9fb53b6d2d35ec90c1114b7a929525.epub
T&T Clark Handbook of Neo-Calvinism (T&T Clark Handbooks) Nathaniel Gray Sutanto (editor), Cory Brock (editor) Bloomsbury UK, T&T Clark Handbooks, 2024
Neo-Calvinism critically advances Reformed orthodoxy for the sake of modern life. Birthed in the Netherlands at the turn to the twentieth century, initiated by Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920) and Herman Bavinck (1854-1921), it argued that a life before God entailed the leavening of faith over all human existence. While the movement originated in the Netherlands, the tradition now has a global reach, with practitioners and thinkers applying its insights in diverse ways and in their own contexts. This handbook is a genealogical introduction to this lively and modern branch of the Reformed tradition, with contributors that reflect its global reach. Its four sections chart the theological roots, important original figures, historical contours and the contemporary influence of neo-Calvinism across a diversity of fields.

zlib/no-category/Paul V. Axton/The Psychotheology of Sin and Salvation_41226750.pdf
The Psychotheology of Sin and Salvation : An Analysis of the Meaning of the Death of Christ in Light of the Psychoanalytical Reading of Paul Paul V. Axton Bloomsbury Publishing Plc, 1, 20151022
"Through the employment of the work of Slavoj Žižek and his engagement with the Apostle Paul, Axton argues that Paul in Romans 6-8 understands sin as a lie grounding the subject outside of Christ, and salvation is an exposure and displacement of this lie. The theological significance of Žižek (along with Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan) is his demonstration of the pervasive and systemic nature of this lie and its description as he finds it in Romans 7. The specific overlap of the two disciplines of psychology and theology is found in the psychoanalytic understanding that the human Subject or the psyche is structured in three registers: the symbolic, the imaginary and the real. These three registers function like a lie analogous to the Pauline categories of law, ego, and the 'body of death' which constitute Paul's dynamic of sin's deception. Axton argues that if sin is understood as a lie grounding the Subject, the exposure of the lie or the dispelling of any notion of mystery connected to sin is integral to salvation and the reconstructing of the Subject in Christ. While the lie of sin is mediated by the law, new life in the Spirit is not through the law but is a principle unto itself, which though it accounts for the law, is beyond the law."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

The Gospel according to Matthew : an introduction and study guide : the Basileia of the heavens Is near at hand Wainwright, Elaine M. ;Myles, Robert J. ;Olivares, Carlos Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Bloomsbury UK, London, 2017
Recent decades have seen significant shifts in biblical scholarship opening up a range of ways of engaging the biblical narrative - both methodologically (the tools and techniques for engaging the text) and hermeneutically (the perspectives that inform an interpreter's approach to the text and to the interpretative task). It is these shifts that give shape to this introduction and study guide, so that students encounter not only the text of Matthew itself but also its rich lode of recent interpretation. Among aspects of 1st-century life brought to the fore by current social-scientific methodology are kinship, the honor and shame culture, and masculinity. Gender is another interpretative lens that has characterized the study of the Gospel of Matthew in recent decades and the Guide provides pathways through this rich literature. The guide to Matthew concludes with the most recent turn of the hermeneutical lens, namely an ecological perspective on what is perhaps the best-known text in Matthew, the Beatitudes. This final chapter is an example of how we can enter an old and familiar text like the Gospel of Matthew from yet another new critical direction.

Conversational Theology : Essays on Ecumenical, Postliberal, and Political Themes, with Special Reference to Karl Barth George Hunsinger Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Bloomsbury UK, New York, 2015
The essays in this wide-ranging collection fall into three main sections: Ecumenical Theology, Postliberal Theology, and Political Theology. The first section deals with Torrance and Barth on the Sacraments. Hunsinger includes here an examination of Torrance’s views of baptism and the eucharist, as well as Karl Barth’s voice on the Lord’s Supper. He also develops a post-Barthian appreciation of Jews and Judaism. In the second section Hunsinger discusses such figures as Hans W. Frei, Ernst Troeltsch and H.R. Niebuhr in terms of their contribution to Postliberal Theology. The final section offers a discussion of Political Theology, as part of which Hunsinger presents an in-depth analysis regarding the political views of Karl Barth, as well as Barth’s understanding of human rights. The book ends with a meditation on André Trocmé and how goodness happened at Le Chambon.

Biblical Criticism: A Guide for the Perplexed (Guides for the Perplexed) Eryl W. Davies Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Bloomsbury T&T Clark, Guides for the perplexed, Guides for the perplexed, London, New York, England, 2013
"This Guide for the Perplexed will demonstrate how modern biblical scholars have expressed dissatisfaction with a one-sided historical-critical approach to biblical texts and have argued that developments in secular literary theory should be applied in biblical studies. Whereas the historical-critical approach was concerned with the moment of a text's production (authorship, date, place of writing etc), the literary approach is concerned with the moment of the text's reception. Eryl W. Davies shows how and why approaches such as 'reader-response criticism', 'feminist criticism', 'ideological criticism', 'canonical criticism' and 'post-colonial criticism' are now becoming more popular in many quarters. The volume explains to the uninitiated in a readable and accessible form how strategies originally derived from secular literary criticism have been adopted by biblical scholars in order to understand the text of Scripture and to appreciate its relevance."--Bloomsbury Publishing This Guide for the Perplexed will demonstrate how modern biblical scholars have expressed dissatisfaction with a one-sided historical-critical approach to biblical texts and have argued that developments in secular literary theory should be applied in biblical studies. Mapping public theology : beyond culture, identity, and difference Valentin, Benjamin Harrisburg, Pa.: Trinity Press International, Harrisburg, Pa, ©2002
<p>At its best, theology can speak to a large and diverse audience, providing a social and political vision that pulls people together as they work toward worthy political goals. But now, at a time when such a broad vision is badly needed, specific theologies such as liberation theology, process theology, and feminist theology seem to offer narrowing and even divisive social and political visions. In Mapping Public Theology, Benjamin Valentin explores the ways that one of these theologies -- Hispanic/Latino theology -- can overcome its fractious nature and strengthen it relevance to society and politics in general. He provides a model for mapping a public theology that transcends the borders. Rather than embracing a kind of identity politics, Valentin says, Hispanic/Latino theology needs to move beyond narrow categories to examine and speak to larger issues such as the political economy and classism, engagement with public policy, and racial and ethnic social relations. Hispanic/Latino theology must use its resources to address a wider audience on social justice and should provide broader visions of social and political emancipation.</p>

"The so-called purity laws in Leviticus 11-15 reflect a cultic and social view on the male and female body. These texts do not give detailed physiological descriptions. Instead, they prescribe what to do in the cases of skin disease, delivery and wo/man's genital discharges, but the particular way of dealing with the body and the language used in Leviticus 12 and 15 ask for clarification: How do these texts construct the male and female body? Which roles does gender play within this language? By means of themes like menstruation and circumcision, the author unfolds the language used for the body in Leviticus and its interpretation history. The study provides material for a contemporary anthropology of bodies which relates the human sexed body to God's holiness."--Bloomsbury Publishing The so-called purity laws in Leviticus 11-15 reflect a cultic and social view on the male and female body. Reading Revelation as Pastiche: Imitating the Past (The Library of New Testament Studies, 571) Michelle Fletcher, Chris Keith Bloomsbury T & T Clark, The Library of New Testament Studies, 2017
Scholars have often read the book of Revelation in way that attempts to ascertain which other Old Testament book it most resembles. Instead, we should read it as a combined and imitative text which actively engages the audience through signalling to multiple texts and multiple textual experiences: in short, it is an act of pastiche. Fletcher analyses the methods used to approach Revelation's relationship with Old Testament texts and shows that, although there is literature on Revelation's imitative and multi-vocal nature, these aspects of the text have not yet been explored in sufficient depth. Fletcher's analysis also incorporates an examination of Greco-Roman imitation and combination before providing a better way to understand the nature of the book of Revelation, as pastiche. Fletcher builds her case on four comparative case studies and uses a test case to ascertain how completely they fit with this assessment. These insights are then used to clarify how reading Revelation as imitative and combined pastiche can challenge previous scholarly assumptions, transforming the way we approach the text.
