This is a clinical neurology book for the student, non neurologist, and those that teach them. The book covers neuroanatomy, history taking and examination and then proceeds to discuss the clinical features of common problems as well as some of the more common rare, neurological disorders, in a way that will demystify a part of medicine that students find complex and difficult to understand. The book is accompanied by a DVD explaining concepts, demonstrating techniques of performing the neurological examination and demonstration of abnormal neurological signs. The first chapter is devoted to neuroanatomy from a clinical viewpoint. The concept of localising problems by likening the nervous system to a map grid with vertical meridians of longitude (the ascending sensory pathways and the descending motor pathway)and horizontal parallels of latitude (cortical signs, brainstem cranial nerves, nerve roots and peripheral nerves) of the nervous system is developed. Subsequent chapters take the reader through the neurological examination and the common neurological presentations from a symptom oriented approach. Chapter 4 contains a very simple method of understanding the brainstem, the "rule of 4". Chapter 6 discusses the approach after the history and examination are completed. The final chapter is an overview of how to approach information gathering and keeping up-to-date using the complex information streams available. widely illustrated with case studies and illustrations key points clinical questions clinical orientation with comprehensive references

Psychology for Health Professionals Patricia Barkway Churchill Livingstone Australia, Elsevier Inc., Health Sciences Division, Chatswood, N.S.W., 2013
This fully updated second edition is written specifically for health science and nursing students in Australia and New Zealand. Authored by the highly regarded Patricia Barkway, with a diverse range of expert contributors, this Elsevier e-book interprets psychology for nurses, as well as for students of paramedicine, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, public health, pharmacy, psychology, social work and midwifery. Psychology for Health Professionals 2e e-book examines essential psychological theories, placing them within a social context. Acknowledging increasing awareness that behaviour is influenced as much by external factors as biological and psychological ones, the book's first half outlines psychological, lifespan and social theories, then applies them to contemporary health issues in later chapters. A key focus of this leading psychology e-book is examining individual personality and psychological theory within the social context of people's lives. New content includes current, evidence-based research, references and clinical examples relevant to interdisciplinary, contemporary healthcare practice. Issues of cultural safety and awareness have been strengthened throughout; there is a new section on chronic illness and a focus on recovery. This introductory psychology e-book does not assume its readers will have prior ‘psychology'knowledge, yet it can easily be used well beyond first-year university. Critical thinking questions Classroom activities Research focus boxes providing examples of current research and evidence-based practice Interdisciplinary case studies throughout Further resources and web links to provide further reading and research and up-to-date information, data and statistics

Case Studies for Complementary Therapists : A Collaborative Approach Kelly Galvin, Madelaine Bishop Elsevier Australia, 1, 2011
An invaluable resource for complementary therapists, health practitioners, students and teachers Case Studies for Complementary Therapists: a collaborative approach provides curriculum-level support for those working to develop the complementary potential between alternative medicines and conventional western medicine. This useful complementary medicine textbook provides insight into the initial complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) consultation process. It offers possible treatment and collaborative referral options for individual cases, rather than dictating diagnostic analysis or treatment protocols for specific health conditions. Through case studies on conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, the book provides an important framework for clinicians and students, within which they can analyse and classify information gathered during consultation. The book will also help readers develop effective and appropriate treatment programs within the time constraints of a busy clinic. Case Studies for Complementary Therapists provides suggestions for questions to ask at consultation time; helping readers collect the necessary information to develop a working diagnosis and treatment protocol. Complementary medicine ethics and law Complementary practitioners are often uncertain about the legal and ethical boundaries in diagnosis and case management. Case Studies for Complementary Therapists: a collaborative approach will help complementary and alternative medicine practitioners and students: • recognise medical situations requiring referral • understand their role in collaborative case management • integrate complementary and alternative medicine modalities in treatment programs with confidence Provides a clear case analysis format which can be and adapted to suit the requirements of individual case histories Specific questioning format Clearly identifies situations where cross or collaborative referral is necessary Decision tables help readers prioritise treatment, refer appropriately and help guide clinical thinking when readers are faced with several treatment options. Class tested, curriculum based
