Four broad data fields requiring action are stressed : 1) social and demographic; 2) natural resources and the environment; 3) price and production statistics; and 4) national accounts. The paper outlines efforts at the national and international level to rehabilitate and build statistical systems. At the national level, establishment of a minimum set of statistical priorities, a national action program for information systems development, and investments in statistical infrastructure, are required. Movements that are class-based are usually portrayed as formed by economic categories of people driven by material interests. Jeff Pratt argues for the need to set up a new analytical framework that extends the study of identity formation, and the ethnographic analysis of economic and social processes, to all political movements. Setting up a new analytical framework, he argues that political processes involve two linked components: a'discourse'(an identity narrative which positions us within social history) and a'movement'(the process of organisation whereby local social divisions are transformed by their incorporation into a wider movement). This volume collects Euripides' Alcestis (translated by William Arrowsmith), a subtle drama about Alcestis and her husband Admetos, which is the oldest surviving work by the dramatist; Medea (Michael Collier and Georgia Machemer), a moving vengeance story and an excellent example of the prominence and complexity that Euripides gave to female characters; Helen (Peter Burian), a genre breaking play based on the myth of Helen in Egypt; and Cyclops (Heather McHugh and David Konstan), a highly lyrical drama based on a celebrated episode from the Odyssey. This volume retains the informative introductions and explanatory notes of the original editions and adds a single combined glossary and Greek line numbers.

Political movements across the world have such diverse characteristics and aims that it is difficult to examine them as a collective group. Movements that are class-based are usually portrayed as formed by economic categories of people driven by material interests. By contrast the study of ethnic or nationalist movements has concentrated on the complexities of identity formation within culturally defined groups driven by strong passions. Jeff Pratt argues for the need to set up a new analytical framework that extends the study of identity formation, and the ethnographic analysis of economic and social processes, to all political movements. Setting up a new analytical framework, he argues that political processes involve two linked components: a'discourse'(an identity narrative which positions us within social history) and a'movement'(the process of organisation whereby local social divisions are transformed by their incorporation into a wider movement). He illustrates his arguments with a vivid mix of case studies from across the last century including Basque nationalism, Andalusian anarchism, Italian communism, the break-up of Yugoslavia, to the'newer'political movements in Europe, in French Occitania and the Italian Lega Nord.
