Elwyn Simons: A Search for Origins (Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects) John G. Fleagle, Christopher C. Gilbert, Elwyn L. Simons Springer New York, Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects, Developments in Primatology: Progress and Prospects, 1, 2008
Elwyn Simons: A Search for Origins John G. Fleagle and Christopher C. Gilbert, Editors For nearly a half century, Dr. Elwyn Simons has dominated the study of primate evolution. This volume summarizes the current state of knowledge in many aspects of primate and human evolution that have been studied by Simons and his colleagues and places it in a broader paleontological and historical perspective. A Search for Origins contains the results of new research and reviews of many of the critical issues in primate and human paleontology during the last half of the twentieth century as well as other aspects of African paleontology, geology, and primate conservation. The chapters include a wide range of important new works that are valuable contributions to the field of physical anthropology and are certain to be widely cited and used in teaching. The authors of this text are an extremely distinguished group of international authorities on all aspects of primate evolution, human evolution, and primate behavior.

The Archaeometallurgy Of Copper: Evidence From Faynan, Jordan (natural Science In Archaeology) Prof. Dr. Andreas Hauptmann (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, Natural Science in Archaeology, Natural Science in Archaeology, 1, 2007
The book deals with the ancient exploitation and production of copper, exemplified by the mining district of Faynan, Jordan. It is an interdisciplinary study that comprises (mining-) archaeological and scientific aspects. The development of organisational patterns and technological improvements of mining and smelting through the ages (5th millennium BC to Roman Byzantine period), in a specific mining region, is discussed. Principles of modern archaeometallurgy in the field and laboratory are explained. An important focus are mineralogical and chemical slag investigations and on the role of trace elements and lead isotope abundance ratios in ores and metals. Provenance studies show the distribution of Faynan copper in the Southern Levant in the Early Bronze Age.

Anaesthesia, pain, intensive care and emergency - A.P.I.C.E. : proceedings of the 21st postgraduate course in critical care medicine, Venice-Mestre, Italy - November 10-13, 2006 K. Hillman (auth.), Antonino Gullo M.D. (eds.) Springer London, Limited, 10.1007/97, 2007
Developing sectors in the Intensive Care field - and in Critical Care Medicine in general - require specific levels of competence having a same common denominator: an in-depth knowledge of human pathophysiology. Although this volume presents plenty of topics in constant evolution, as witnessed by the collection of chapters compiled by several researchers, this edition includes, in particular, fields in which decision making at the patient's bedside prevails over theoretical argumentation. In other words, the first and foremost message this edition wants to provide, is for the reader to focus his/her attention on evidence-based medicine

lgli/M_Mathematics/MPop_Popular-level/Nardi E. Amongst mathematicians. Teaching and learning mathematics at university level (Springer, 2008)(ISBN 9780387371412)(347s)_MPop_.pdf
Amongst Mathematicians: Teaching and Learning Mathematics at University Level (Mathematics Teacher Education, 3) Elena Nardi (auth.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Mathematics Teacher Education 3, 1, 2008
Amongst Mathematicians offers a unique perspective on the ways in which mathematicians perceive their students' learning, teach and reflect on their teaching practice; also on how they perceive the often fragile relationship between the communities of mathematics and mathematics education. Elena Nardi employs two fictional, yet entirely data-grounded, characters to create a conversation on these important issues. While personas are created, the facts incorporated into their stories are based on large bodies of data including intense focused group interviews with mathematicians and extensive analyses of students' written work. This book demonstrates the pedagogical potential that lies in collaborative undergraduate mathematics education research that engages mathematicians, researchers and students. Nardi also addresses the need for action in undergraduate mathematics education and offers a discourse for reform through demonstrating the feasibility and potential of collaboration between mathematicians and mathematics education researchers. Amongst Mathematicians is of interest to both the mathematics and mathematics education communities including university teachers, teacher educators, undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers.

Computer Recognition Systems: Proceedings of 4th International Conference on Computer Recognition Systems CORES'05 (Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing, 30) Marek Kurzynski; Edward Puchala; Michal Wozniak; Andrzej Zolnierek Springer Spektrum. in Springer-Verlag GmbH, Springer Nature, Berlin, 2005
th This book contains papers accepted for presentation at the 4 International Conference on Computer Recognition Systems CORES'05, May 22-25, 2005, Rydzyna Castle (Poland), This conference is a continuation of a series of con ferences on similar topics (KOSYR) organized each second year, since 1999, by the Chair of Systems and Computer Networks, Wroclaw University of Tech nology. An increasing interest to those conferences paid not only by home but also by foreign participants inspired the organizers to transform them into conferences of international range. Our expectations that the community of specialists in computer recognizing systems will find CORES'05 a proper form of maintaining the tradition of the former conferences have been confirmed by a large number of submitted papers. Alas, organizational constraints caused a necessity to narrow the acceptance criteria so that only 100 papers have been finally included into the conference program. The area covered by accepted papers is still very large and it shows how vivacious is scientific activity in the domain of computer recognition methods and systems. It contains vari ous theoretical approaches to the recognition problem based on mathematical statistics, fuzzy sets, morphological methods, wavelets, syntactic methods, genetic algorithms, artificial neural networks, ontological models, etc. Most attention is still paid to visual objects recognition; however, acoustic, tex tual and other objects are also considered. Among application areas medical problems are in majority; recognition of faces, speech signals and textual in formation processing methods being also investigated.

Energiya - Buran. The Soviet Space Shuttle Bart Hendrickx, Bert Vis Springer & Praxis Publishing, Springer Praxis Books / Space Exploration, 2007
In __Energiya-Buran: the Soviet Space Shuttle__, the authors describe the long development path of the Soviet space shuttle system, consisting of the Energiya rocket and the Buran orbiter. The program eventually saw just one unmanned flight in November 1988 before the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the Soviet Union sealed its fate. After a Foreword provided by lead Buran test pilot Igor Volk, the authors look at the experience gradually accumulated in high-speed aeronautics with the development of various Soviet rocket planes and intercontinental cruise missiles between the 1930s to 1950s and the study of several small spaceplanes in the 1960s. Next the authors explain how the perceived military threat of the US Space Shuttle led to the decision in February 1976 to build a Soviet equivalent, and explore the evolution of the design until it was frozen in 1979. Following this is a detailed technical description of both Energiya and Buran and a look at nominal flight scenarios and emergency situations, highlighting similarities and differences with the US Space Shuttle. The authors then expand on the managerial aspects of the Energiya-Buran program, sum up the main design bureaus and production facilities involved in the project and describe the infrastructure needed to transport the hardware and prepare it for launch at the Baikonur cosmodrome. They go on to detail the selection and training of teams of civilian and military test pilots for Buran, crew assignments for the first manned missions and preparatory flights aboard Soyuz spacecraft. Next the focus turns to the extensive test program that preceded the first flight of Buran, notably the often trouble-plagued test firings of rocket engines, the first flight of Energiya with the enigmatic Polyus payload, test flights of subscale models and atmospheric approach and landing tests. After an analysis of Western speculation on the Soviet space shuttle effort in the pre-glasnost era, a detailed account is given of final preparations for the maiden flight of Buran and the mission itself. In the final chapters the authors look at the gradual demise of the project in the early 1990s, the fate of the Soviet orbiters and their cosmodrome infrastructure, cancelled missions, and the many planned derivatives of the Energiya rocket. Attention is also paid to technological spin-offs such as the Zenit and Sea Launch projects and the RD-180 and RD-191 rocket engines. Finally, an overview is given of alternative spaceplane proposals during and after the Buran era, including the MAKS air-launched spaceplane, the Kliper spacecraft and various single-stage-to-orbit systems. The book closes off with key specifications of the Energiya-Buran system, short biographies of the Buran pilots, an extensive list of Russian acronyms, a short bibliographical essay and a detailed index. Based largely on Russian sources, it is richly illustrated with some 250 pictures and diagrams. Although Energiya-Buran was primarily a program of unfulfilled promises and shattered dreams, it represented a major technological breakthrough for the Soviet Union and its story deserves to be told.

Annotation Progress in the field of medicine over the last 50 years has led to important results for society, both in terms of prevention and in the treatment of single or variously associated pathologies. The main objective of modern medicine has been the acquisition of increased skills and highly specialised knowledge in the various disciplines. At the same time, there has been a progressive multidisciplinary and multi-professional interest in acute disease conditions that place the patient in potential or real life-threatening situations. The state of the art of intensive medicine comprises a wide range of sophisticated interventions and collaboration between different medical disciplines, both of which give the patient access to the most advanced forms of treatment that are currently available

The amount of research on the prevalence and nature of various forms of anxiety disorders, problematic health behaviors, and physical illness has significantly accumulated, yet there has been no systematic integration of the research in science and practice. Anxiety in Health Behaviors and Physical Illness is a single resource that offers theoretical perspectives and reviews of research on the link between health behaviors and physical illness to anxiety. The authors explore the idea of reciprocal relations between anxiety and health factors throughout the developmental course. Special attention is devoted to the mechanisms by which certain health factors (e.g. physical exercise) may play a role in the onset or maintenance of particular anxiety disorders.

Computer Recognition Systems: Proceedings of 4th International Conference on Computer Recognition Systems CORES'05 (Advances in Intelligent and Soft Computing, 30) Marek Kurzynski (editor), Edward Puchala (editor), Michal Wozniak (editor), Andrzej Zolnierek (editor) Springer Spektrum. in Springer-Verlag GmbH, Springer Nature, Berlin, 2005
th This book contains papers accepted for presentation at the 4 International Conference on Computer Recognition Systems CORES'05, May 22-25, 2005, Rydzyna Castle (Poland), This conference is a continuation of a series of con ferences on similar topics (KOSYR) organized each second year, since 1999, by the Chair of Systems and Computer Networks, Wroclaw University of Tech nology.

Building Supply Chain Excellence in Emerging Economies (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science (98)) Hau Leung Lee; Chung-Yee Lee Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Springer Nature, New York, 2007
xv Global Supply Chain: General Strategies and Framework There are five chapters on the general strategies and framework. In "On the Globalization of Operations and Supply Chain Strategies - A Conceptual Framework and its Applications," Panos Kouvelis and Julie Niederhoff de scribe the forces that shape globalization and a framework to develop strate gies. The authors illustrate how the framework can be used with the case of Acrilan, an acrylic fiber manufacturer. As the emerging economies begin to mature, and the supply and demand points in a supply chain begin to shift, companies need to re-optimize the de sign of their global supply chain, so as to make the best use of their global resources. This is the subject of "Globalization and Emerging Markets: The Challenge of Continuous Global Network Optimization," by Peter Koudal and Douglas A. Engel. Many emerging economies have lower direct labor costs, and are so attrac tive offshoring locations. But there could be many hidden costs. The decision to offshore has to be based on a sound comprehensive analysis of the total landed costs, the tradeoffs of associated risks, and the business strategies of the company. David Pyke provides us with the approach to tackle this deci sion, and share with us his personal experience in helping companies to make such decisions, in his chapter titled "Shanghai or Charlotte? The Decision to Outsource to China and Other Low Cost Countries. Erscheinungsdatum: 31.10.2006

Bio-Materials and Prototyping Applications in Medicine edited by Paulo Bártolo, Bopaya Bidanda Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, 1, 2007
Bio-Materials and Prototyping Applications in Medicine Bio-materials and prototyping (both virtual and physical) are becoming more and more prevalent in medicine. These materials and technologies are used to design, develop, and manufacture medical devices and instruments, and to fabricate drug dosage forms. These processes are also increasingly being used by surgeons to plan complex operations, especially in the craniofacial and maxillofacial areas. Further, prototyping shows promise in the area of tissue engineering through the use of biomaterials including the direct manufacture of biologically active implants. Bio-Materials and Prototyping Applications in Medicine focuses on bio-materials and prototyping applications in medical environments. The applications that are discussed integrate bio-materials, CAD, and physical prototyping techniques. Drawing upon the collective knowledge of renowned experts, __Paulo Bártolo__ and __Bopaya Bidanda__ have assembled a wide ranging treatise on biomaterials and prototyping applications in medicine that includes: * Summary of state-of-the-art research in prototyping of bio-materials for medical applications; * The issues involved with using solid freeform fabrication/rapid prototyping/layered manufacturing that is becoming very important in the biomaterials area; * In-depth discussion on the emergence of computer aided design in the development of prosthetic devices. Bio-Materials and Prototyping Applications in Medicine is a must have for researchers, professionals, engineers and academics seeking a comprehensive overview of this important subject and examples of medical applications using rapid prototyping, including tissue engineering, dental applications, and bone replacement.

Building Supply Chain Excellence in Emerging Economies (International Series in Operations Research & Management Science (98)) Panos Kouvelis, Julie Niederhoff (auth.), Hau L. Lee, Chung-Yee Lee (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, International Series in Operations Research & Management Science, International Series in Operations Research & Management Science 98, 1, 2007
The rapidly developing new economies in China, India, Hungary, Vietnam, Costa Rica, Mexico, Brazil, etc., are at the crossroads of almost all major supply chains. In fact, these emerging economies are in fact growing faster than the established industrial economies of the world. However, given the physical, social and cultural characteristics of the emerging economies, managing supply chains there could be even more challenging than in developed economies. How can we manage supply chains well in emerging economies, coordinate information flows with multiple partners, tackle challenges such as unexpected disruptions, diversify the risks and increase flexibilities, be efficient but at the same time contribute to the social and environmental developments of these economies, and use supply chain concepts and practices to improve the economic welfare of these countries, such as basic infrastructure developments and disaster relief, are the topics and issues of the book. **__BUILDING SUPPLY-CHAIN EXCELLENCE IN EMERGING ECONOMIES__** provides some insights on the answers to the above questions and will enable practitioners to gain insights on the developments, challenges and opportunities when operating supply chains in emerging economies. Innovative approaches are outlined and illustrated with examples of real-world experiences by progressive companies and thought leaders. We also hope that this collection will stimulate researchers to gain deeper understanding and develop methods in operating supply chains in emerging economies. We have organized the book in three key sections. __**Global Supply Chain: General Strategies and Framework**__ develops the overall framework in managing global supply chains and developing strategies. **__Supply Chain Management in Emerging Economies: Challenges and Opportunities__** describes the challenges and opportunities in supply chain management of emerging economies – the infrastructure constraints, the logistics inefficiencies, and limitations in service operations; and discusses how to create opportunities in such adverse conditions. **__Building Supply Chain Excellence: Innovations and Success Cases__** is devoted to a number of industrial cases that showcase innovative approaches to gain excellence, and share insights and lessons from such experiences.

Biosphere Origin and Evolution Nikolay Dobretsov; Nikolay Kolchanov; Alexey Rozanov; Georgy Zavarzin Springer US, New York, NY, New York State, 2008
Modern natural science shows that the infancy of life on Earth experienced prebiotic evolution and included the emergence of primitive self-reproducing biologic forms and their systems. The subsequent coevolution of inorganic environment and biologic systems resulted in global propagation of life over the Earth and its enormous diversification. Diverse living organisms colonized the land, water, and atmosphere, as well as upper layers of the lithosphere, thereby forming the biosphere. Formerly, it was thought that abiogenic synthesis of prebiotic matter occurred in the Earth’s atmosphere on land surface. However, the presence of life signs in rocks more than 3. 5 Gyr old suggests that the chemical matter evolution stage with synthesis of organic compounds from simple molecules is more likely to have occurred in the preglobal circumstellar disk together with the RNA world and the emergence of life itself. This notion removes the restriction imposed by the Earth’s age and environmental conditions on the young Earth. It is favored by detection of intricate organic compounds on meteorites, comets, and (according to spectral data) in gas–dust nebulae. The detection of life traces in meteorite bodies of the same age as the Earth and the Solar System indicates that life in the latter can be older than the Earth as documented by geologic records. The key features of living systems allowing their existence in time and space are self-reproduction and ability to evolve. The inseparability of these features was expressed by N. V. Erscheinungsdatum: 18.12.2007

Anxiety in Health Behavior and Physical Illness Edited by Michael J. Zvolensky, University of VermontJasper A. J. Smits, Southern Methodist University While the links between physical illness and depression have been well-documented and analyzed, little has been made of the data relating physical illness to anxiety—until now. Anxiety in Health Behavior and Physical Illness explores complex relationships between medical and anxiety pathology on the theoretical, research, and practical fronts. Over forty experts examine reciprocal roles of anxiety and medical illness as causal or exacerbating factors in each other’s onset and development, describe forms of anxiety typical to major disease entities, discuss common health behaviors as they impact anxiety, recast anxiety disorders as chronic illness, and identify patients for whom new forms of treatment may be warranted. Among the topics covered: * Anxiety in the context of specific illness: heart disease, asthma, HIV/AIDS. * Self-medication across the anxiety disorders: alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs. * Possible links between anxiety and insomnia. * The relationship between puberty and adolescent anxiety. * Anxiety, anxiety disorders, and the menstrual cycle. * Anxiety disorders and chronic pain. * Current and emerging treatments for anxiety disorders, from CBT to exercise-based interventions. Anxiety in Health Behavior and Physical Illness is a comprehensive resource to be read not only by clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, and, other health professionals, but also by researchers and graduate students on the cutting edge of the field.

Amongst Mathematicians: Teaching and Learning Mathematics at University Level (Mathematics Teacher Education, 3) Elena Nardi Springer Verlag, Mathematics Teacher Education 3, 1, 2008
Amongst Mathematicians is of interest to both the mathematics and mathematics education communities including university teachers, teacher educators, undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers.

lgli/dvd61/Nardi E. - Amongst Mathematicians. Teaching and Learning Mathematics at University Level(2007)(356).pdf
Amongst Mathematicians: Teaching and Learning Mathematics at University Level (Mathematics Teacher Education, 3) Elena Nardi Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Mathematics Teacher Education, 1, 2007
Amongst Mathematicians is of interest to both the mathematics and mathematics education communities including university teachers, teacher educators, undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers

Anaesthesia, pain, intensive care and emergency - A.P.I.C.E. : proceedings of the 21st postgraduate course in critical care medicine, Venice-Mestre, Italy - November 10-13, 2006 K. Hillman (auth.), Antonino Gullo M.D. (eds.) Springer Milan, Springer Nature, Milan, 2007
Developing sectors in the Intensive Care field – and in Critical Care Medicine in general – require specific levels of competence having a same common denominator: an in-depth knowledge of human pathophysiology. Although this volume presents plenty of topics in constant evolution, as witnessed by the collection of chapters compiled by several researchers, this edition includes, in particular, fields in which decision-making at the patient’s bedside prevails over theoretical argumentation. In other words, the first and foremost message this edition wants to provide is for the reader to focus his/her attention on evidence-based medicine.

Entrepreneurship In Emerging Domestic Markets: Barriers And Innovation (the Milken Institute Series On Financial Innovation And Economic Growth) Kelly D. Edmiston (auth.), Glenn Yago, James R. Barth, Betsy Zeidman (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, The Milken Institute Series on Financial Innovation and Economic Growth, The Milken Institute Series on Financial Innovation and Economic Growth 7, 1, 2008
As one examines worldwide economic growth over the past decade, it is clear that the U.S. economy has surpassed most of the industrialized world, both in its rate of growth and its ability to create wealth. Entrepreneurship is critical to this growth--entrepreneurs recognize the potential of new ideas, design applications, develop new products, and successfully bring products to market. They build companies and create jobs, generating new opportunities for wealth creation. An often overlooked opportunity for entrepreneurship is the market segment known as emerging domestic markets (EDM). These low- to moderate-income communities, ethnic- and women-owned firms, and underinvested urban areas represent a rapidly growing component of the U.S. population. Smart investors seeking untapped opportunities are homing in on such markets. Visionary policy-makers recognize that given current demographic trends, America's national economic health depends increasingly on the vitality of EDM businesses. At the same time, it is clear that fostering entrepreneurship in emerging domestic markets is challenging on many levels. Entrepreneurship in Emerging Domestic Markets: Barriers and Innovation explores the key issues surrounding EDM entrepreneurship. Leading researchers and practitioners from the fields of finance, entrepreneurship, economics, and government delve into data to identify the significant stumbling blocks and pose workable solutions. With this volume, the editors aim to provide scholars, investors, policy-makers, advocates, and the business community a tool to help leverage the significant entrepreneurial resources in emerging domestic markets. "What a refreshing and important volume! The reader will learn, contrary to some microcredit adherents, that not everyone is an entrepreneur, and that new businesses started by poor people fail at an exceptionally high rate. Net result: perhaps credit is overestimated as a solution to poverty. Instead, the poor need secure, well-paying jobs, which is what real entrepreneurs can provide. What does it take, and what has it taken in the past, to encourage these entrepreneurs? What has stymied their progress? Barth, Yago, and Zeidman have gathered a set of papers that you will want to read." Gerard Caprio, Jr. Professor, Economics Department and Chair Center for Development Economics, Williams College "This book advances our understanding of the complexity and intractability of economic development in emerging U.S. domestic markets. Its underlying thesis is both intuitively appealing and sustained by research reported here: entrepreneurs are most likely to be the transformational leaders in these markets. Thoughtful practitioners, government policy-makers, and academic researchers will find this volume to be a stimulus to sound reflection." Robert F. Bruner Dean and Charles C. Abbott Professor of Business Administration and Distinguished Professor of Business Administration, Darden Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Virginia

Entrepreneurship In Emerging Domestic Markets: Barriers And Innovation (the Milken Institute Series On Financial Innovation And Economic Growth) Glenn Yago, James R. Barth, Betsy Zeidman, editors; foreword by Robert E. Litan Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Springer Nature, New York, 2008
An often-overlooked aspect of entrepreneurship in American is its role in emerging domestic markets (EDM). These markets – low-to-moderate income communities, ethnic- and women-owned businesses, urban areas – are frequently ignored by mainstream markets. Yet with current demographic trends, they are an increasingly large component of the US population. Entrepreneurship can serve as a means to foster business development in these emerging communities and as a critically important way to improve the standard of living in low- and moderate-income (LMI) sectors. Increasingly, policy makers, advocates and investors understand national economic growth demands business formation among all segments of the market, and that the best attack on poverty is job and wealth creation. A robust entrepreneurial climate helps address the challenges and harness the opportunities. “Entrepreneurship in Emerging Domestic Markets: Barriers and Innovation” is a compendium of papers written by the leading researchers and practitioners from the fields of finance, public policy, entrepreneurship, and economics. With this volume, the editors aim to provide scholars, students, investors, policymakers, and the business community a resource that explores the issues surrounding entrepreneurship in EDM communities.

Energiya-Buran: The Soviet Space Shuttle (Springer Praxis Books / Space Exploration) Mr Bart Hendrickx, Mr Bert Vis (auth.) Praxis; Springer; Published in association with Praxis Pub., Springer Praxis Books, Springer Praxis Books, 1, 2007

Biosphere Origin and Evolution Nikolay Dobretsov, Nikolay Kolchanov, Alexey Rozanov, Georgy Zavarzin Springer US, 1, 2007
Modern natural science shows that the infancy of life on Earth experienced prebiotic evolution and included the emergence of primitive self-reproducing biologic forms and their systems. The subsequent coevolution of inorganic environment and biologic systems resulted in global propagation of life over the Earth and its enormous diversification. Diverse living organisms colonized the land, water, and atmosphere, as well as upper layers of the lithosphere, thereby forming the biosphere. The book covers notions by scientists of various branches on the evolutionary relationship between the biosphere and geosphere, evolution features at various levels of living matter organization, and problems of prebiotic evolution and life origin. The data were collected in the course of the RAS program Biosphere origin and evolution (subprogram II) in 2003 2006. The objectives of this subprogram were (1) generalization of data related to problems of biosphere origin and evolution accumulated by geneticists, molecular biologists, zoologists, botanists, paleontologists, microbiologists, geologists, chemists, and archaeologists; (2) search for new interdisciplinary approaches to biosphere origin and evolution; (3) development of a lingua franca understandable by experts in various fields, which would allow apprehension of results concerning the topic obtained in allied sciences.
