Showing how they found significance in such an unlikely text leads on to the conclusion that the commentators are largely in agreement that the Song refers to a meeting of the Word of God in his incarnate form, reaching out to all humanity, and the collective humanity, viewed in the obedient responsiveness of a bride. This responsive collective humanity is described variously in terms of 'church', believing soul, soul of Christ and humanity of Christ. Mark W. These lively discussions by Jerry A. Fodor, Zenon W. Pylyshyn, Steven Pinker, Alan Prince, Joel Lechter, and Thomas G. Bever raise issues that lie at the core of our understanding of how the mind works: Does connectionism offer it truly new scientific model or does it merely cloak the old notion of associationism as a central doctrine of learning and mental functioning? Which of the new empirical generalizations are sound and which are false? Juan Ignacio Molina (1740-1829) was a Jesuit priest born in Chile but forced to flee to Europe after his religious order was expelled from the Spanish Empire in 1767. He settled in Bologna, Italy, and began to write a natural history of his homeland, which was first published in Italian in 1782 (he is also known as Giovanni Ignazio Molina). He completed a second volume on the history of the people of Chile in 1786, and a version of the book was in the library of HMS Beagle. This two-volume English translation was published in 1809, and also includes notes from other explorers, including a 1791 account of Chile by Pedro González de Agüeros (1768-93) and a 1774 description of Patagonia by Thomas Falkner (1707-84). Volume 2 covers the 'civil history' of Chile, discussing the indigenous people living there and the arrival of Spanish settlers.-- Provided by publisher

Matthias Henze has prepared the editio princeps of the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel, a hitherto unknown apocalypse composed in the early seventh century A.D. in Syriac and preserved in a single manuscript only. Following an introduction to the Apocalypse, the book includes an edition of the Syriac text, an English translation, and a detailed commentary. Like the biblical Daniel on which it is closely modelled, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel is an'historical'apocalypse, i.e. it has two parts: the'historical'first part relates the adventures of Daniel in midrashic form, from his deportation by Nebuchadnezzar until his return to Persia from Jerusalem which he visits with King Darius. Upon returning to Persia, Daniel has a sequence of apocalyptic visions which are recorded in the latter, eschatological part of the text and which describe the gradual unfolding of the end of time. The Syriac Apocalypse has preserved a number of motifs worth exploring: the messianic woes, the Gates of the North erected by Alexander the Great, a description of Antichrist's physiognomy, the Second Coming of Christ, and the new Jerusalem. Equally important, the Syriac Apocalypse of Daniel bears testimony to the vibrant apocalyptic currency in Syriac Christianity.

Das internationale Symposium, das 2004 in der Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek in Emden stattfand, ging der Frage nach, ob und in welcher Weise konfessionelle Orientierungen am Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts in der Lehre der Philosophie, Jurisprudenz und Theologie an der Universität Heidelberg einen Niederschlag gefunden haben. Gerade die Vorreiterrolle der Kurpfalz mit der Universität Heidelberg bei den Versuchen einer Calvinisierung des Reiches läßt eine verstärkte Wirkung der Konfessionalisierung in den verschiedenen Lebensbereichen vermuten. Der vorläufige Befund ist jedoch widersprüchlich. Bei den Theologen kann man eine klare konfessionelle Abgrenzung feststellen, die sich gegen die sogenannten Gnesiolutheraner und das Luthertum der Konkordienformel, nicht jedoch gegen das melanchthonianisch gesinnte Luthertum richtet. Bei den Philosophen ist das kaum greifbar, wie gerade die ambivalente Haltung zur ramistischen Methode zeigt. Bei den Juristen, die sich in der großen Mehrheit der reformierten Konfession verbunden wissen, lassen sich Aspekte herausarbeiten, die eine scharfe Abgrenzung gegenüber dem "Papismus" deutlich machen. Hingegen wird auf innerprotestantische Abgrenzungen fast völlig verzichtet und vielmehr durchgängig Kritik an dem ärgerlichen "Theologengezänk" formuliert. Insgesamt wird deutlich, wie wenig aussagekräftig die Etiketten "calvinistisch" oder "reformiert" sind. Nicht weniger charakteristisch für das damalige Heidelberger Gelehrtenmilieu ist die tiefe Verbundenheit mit humanistischem Gedankengut sowie die starke Präsenz westeuropäischer Beziehungen und Erfahrungshorizonte.
