The Challenges of Globalization : Economy and Politics in Germany, 1860-1914
Cornelius Torp; translated by Alex Skinner
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, NY, 2014
In the mid nineteenth century a process began that appears, from a present-day perspective, to have been the first wave of economic globalization. Within a few decades global economic integration reached a level that equaled, and in some respects surpassed, that of the present day. This book describes the interpenetration of the German economy with an emerging global economy before the First World War, while also demonstrating the huge challenge posed by globalization to the society and politics of the German Empire. The stakes for both the winners and losers of the intensifying world market played a major role in dividing German society into camps with conflicting socio-economic priorities. As foreign trade policy moved into the center stage of political debates, the German government found it increasingly difficult to pursue a successful policy that avoided harming German exports and consumer interests while also seeking to placate a growing protectionist movement. ..

Problems of Conception : Issues of Law, Biotechnology, Individuals and Kinship
Marit Melhuus
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2012
The Biotechnology Act in Norway, one of the most restrictive in Europe, forbids egg donation and surrogacy and has rescinded the anonymity clause with respect to donor insemination. Thus, it limits people's choice as to how they can procreate within the boundaries of the nation state. The author pursues this significant datum ethnographically and addresses the issues surrounding contemporary biopolitics in Norway. This involves investigating such fundamental questions as the relation between individual and society, meanings of kinship and relatedness, the moral status of the embryo and the role of science, religion and ethics in state policies. Even though the book takes reproductive technologies as its focus, it reveals much about vital processes that are central to contemporary Norwegian society.

Thinking Through Sociality : An Anthropological Interrogation of Key Concepts
Vered Amit (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2015
As issues and circumstances investigated by anthropologists are becoming ever more diverse, the need to address social affiliation in contemporary situations of mobility, urbanity, transnational connections, individuation, media, and capital flows, has never been greater. __Thinking Through Sociality__ combines a review of classical theories with recent theoretical innovations across a wide range of issues, locales, situations and domains. In this book, an international group of contributors train attention on the concepts of disjuncture, field, social space, sociability, organizations and network, mid-range concepts that are “good to think with.” Neither too narrowly defined nor too sweeping, these concepts can be used to think through a myriad of ethnographic situations.

The French Road Movie: Space, Mobility, Identity (Berghahn on Film)
Archer, Neil, 1971-
Berghahn Books, Inc., New York, New York State, 2012
The traditionally American genre of the road movie has been explored and reconfigured in the French context since the later 1960s. Comparative in its approach, this book studies the inter-relationship between American and French culture and cinemas, and in the process considers and challenges histories of the road movie. It combines film history with film theory methodologies, analysing transformations in social, political and film-industrial contexts alongside changing perspectives on the meaning and possibilities of film. At once chronological and thematic in structure, The French Road Movie provides in each chapter a comprehensive introduction to key themes emerging from the genre in the French context – liberty, identity and citizenship, masculinity, femininity, border-crossing – followed by detailed, innovative and often revisionist readings of the chosen films. Through these readings the author justifies the place of the road genre within French cinema histories and reinvigorates this often neglected and misunderstood area of study.

Chiasmus and Culture
Boris Wiseman (editor); Anthony Paul (editor)
Berghahn Books, Berghahn Books, Studies in Rhetoric and Culture -- 6, New York, New York State, 2014
Anyone who has heard of chiasmus is likely to think of it as no more than a piece of rhetorical playfulness, at times challenging, though useful for supplying a memorable sententious note or for performing a pirouette of syntax and thought. Going beyond traditional rhetoric, this volume is concerned with the possibility of using the figure of chiasmus to model a broad array of phenomena, from human relations to artistic creation. In the process, it provides the first book-length study not of chiasmus, the rhetorical figure, but of chiastic thought. The contributors are concerned with chiastic inversion and its place in social interactions, cultural creation, and more generally human thought and experience. They explore from a variety of angles what the unsettling logic of chiasmus (from the Greek meaning “cross-wise”), has to tell us about the world, human relations, cultural patterns, psychology, and artistic and poetic creation.

Trieglaff : balancing church and politics in a Pomeranian world, 1807-1948
Rudolf von Thadden; translated by Stephen Barlau
Berghahn Books, Inc., 1, 2022
Through the lens of five generations of Thaddens, this book tells the history of Trieglaff, the village and family estate located in what is now western Poland, from Napoleon’s occupation in 1807 to the Red Army’s invasion in 1945 and until the departure of the last Thaddens in 1948. At the center of this history of Trieglaff society, economy, politics, and culture is the von Thadden family, notably, Adolph Ferdinand von Thadden, the head of the pietistic revival in Pomerania, and Reinold von Thadden-Trieglaff, the founder of the German Protestant __Kirchentag.__ It intertwines family history with the political history of Germany through its description of Otto von Bismarck’s close associations with Trieglaff in the 19th century and its deliberation of the execution of Elisabeth von Thadden, arising out of her resistance to the Nazis, in the 20th century. The source material is richly supplemented by family records kept by “Trieglaffers” in America and from correspondence between Pomerania and America. The book examines the lives of individuals as well as socio-economic and cultural structures, depicting the dynamic changes that the village experienced throughout some 150 years of German and European history; it might be called world history in microcosm. As juxtaposition of formal history and remembered history, it is a serious scholarly source as well as an engaging read.

New Hong Kong Cinema : Transitions to Becoming Chinese in 21st-Century East Asia
by Ruby Cheung
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2016
The trajectory of Hong Kong films had been drastically affected long before the city's official sovereignty transfer from the British to the Chinese in 1997. The change in course has become more visible in recent years as China has aggressively developed its national film industry and assumed the role of powerhouse in East Asia's cinematic landscape. The author introduces the “Cinema of Transitions” to study the New Hong Kong Cinema and on- and off-screen life against this background. Using examples from the 1980s to the present, this book offers a fresh perspective on how Hong Kong-related Chinese-language films, filmmakers, audiences, and the workings of film business in East Asia have become major platforms on which “transitions” are negotiated.

Social Bonds As Freedom : Revisiting the Dichotomy of the Universal and the Particular
edited by Paul Dumouchel and Reiko Gotoh
Berghahn Books, Inc., 1, 20150801
Central to discussions of multiculturalism and minority rights in modern liberal societies is the idea that the particular demands of minority groups contradict the requirements of equality, anonymity, and universality for citizenship and belonging. The contributors to this volume question the significance of this dichotomy between the universal and the particular, arguing that it reflects how the modern state has instituted the basic rights and obligations of its members and that these institutions are undergoing fundamental transformations under the pressure of globalization. They show that the social bonds uniting groups constitute the means of our freedom, rather than obstacles to achieving the universal.-- Provided by publisher

Connecting histories of education : transnational and cross-cultural exchanges in (post- )colonial education
Barnita Bagchi (editor); Eckhardt Fuchs (editor); Kate Rousmaniere (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2014
The history of education in the modern world is a history of transnational and cross-cultural influence. This collection explores those influences in (post) colonial and indigenous education across different geographical contexts. The authors emphasize how local actors constructed their own adaptation of colonialism, identity, and autonomy, creating a multi-centric and entangled history of modern education. In both formal as well as informal aspects, they demonstrate that transnational and cross-cultural exchanges in education have been characterized by appropriation, re-contextualization, and hybridization, thereby rejecting traditional notions of colonial education as an export of pre-existing metropolitan educational systems. ..

The changing patterns of Japanese tourism and the views of the Japanese tourist since the Meiji Restoration, in 1868, are given an in-depth historical, geographical, economic and social analysis in this book. As well as providing a case study for the purpose of investigating the changing face of global tourism from the 19th to the 21st Century, this account of Japanese tourism explores both domestic social relations and international geographical, political and economic relations, especially in the northeast Asian context. Socio-cultural and geographical analysis form the research framework for the book, in three ways: first, there is an emphasis on scale as tourism phenomena and their implications are discussed both in a global context and at the national, regional and local levels; second, the discussion is informed by primary data sources such as censuses and surveys; and third, the incorporation of fieldwork and case studies adds concreteness to the overall picture of Japanese tourism. This book is a significant addition to an area of study currently under-represented in the literature.

Strike Action and Nation Building : Labor Unrest in Palestine/Israel, 1899-1951
David de Vries
Berghahn Books, Inc., 1, 20150701
Strike-action has long been a notable phenomenon in Israeli society, despite forces that have weakened its recurrence, such as the Arab-Jewish conflict, the decline of organized labor, and the increasing precariousness of employment. While the impact of strikes was not always immense, they are deeply rooted in Israel's past during the Ottoman Empire and Mandate Palestine. Workers persist in using them for material improvement and to gain power in both the private and public sectors, reproducing a vibrant social practice whose codes have withstood the test of time. This book unravels the trajectory of the strikes as a rich source for the social-historical analysis of an otherwise nation-oriented and highly politicized history.

Being a State and States of Being in Highland Georgia
Florian Mühlfried
Berghahn Books, Inc., EASA series -- 24, New York, New York State, 2014
The highland region of the republic of Georgia, one of the former Soviet Socialist Republics, has long been legendary for its beauty. It is often assumed that the state has only made partial inroads into this region, and is mostly perceived as alien. Taking a fresh look at the Georgian highlands allows the author to consider perennial questions of citizenship, belonging, and mobility in a context that has otherwise been known only for its folkloric dimensions. Scrutinizing forms of identification with the state at its margins, as well as local encounters with the erratic Soviet and post-Soviet state, the author argues that citizenship is both a sought-after means of entitlement and a way of guarding against the state. This book not only challenges theories in the study of citizenship but also the axioms of integration in Western social sciences in general.

The Dream in Islam : From Qur'anic Tradition to Jihadist Inspiration
Iain R. Edgar
Berghahn Books, Inc, Berghahn Books, New York, 2011
The war in the Middle East is marked by a lack of cultural knowledge on the part of the western forces, and this book deals with another, widely ignored element of Islam-the role of dreams in everyday life. The practice of using night dreams to make important life decisions can be traced to Middle Eastern dream traditions and practices that preceded the emergence of Islam. In this study, the author explores some key aspects of Islamic dream theory and interpretation as well as the role and significance of night dreams for contemporary Muslims. In his analysis of the Islamic debates surrounding the role of "true" dreams in historical and contemporary Islamic prophecy, the author specifically addresses the significance of Al-Qaeda and Taliban dream practices and ideology. Dreams of "heaven," for example, are often instrumental in determining Jihadist suicidal action, and "heavenly" dreams are also evidenced within other contemporary human conflicts such as Israel-Palestine and Kosovo-Serbia. By exploring patterns of dreams within this context, a cross-cultural, psychological, and experiential understanding of the role and significance of such contemporary critical political and personal imagery can be achieved. -- Product Description

Human rights without democracy? : reconciling freedom with equality
GRET HALLER, Gret Haller, translated by Cynthia Klohr, Haller, Gret
Berghahn Books, Inc., 2012, 2012
Do Human Rights truly serve the people? Should citizens themselves decide democratically of what those rights consist? Or is it a decision for experts and the courts? The author argues that Human Rights must be established democratically.

Asymmetrical Conversations: Contestations, Circumventions, and the Blurring of Therapeutic Boundaries (Epistemologies of Healing, 14)
edited by Harish Naraindas, Johannes Quack, and William S. Sax
Berghahn Books, Inc., Epistemologies of healing -- volume 14, New York, New York State, 2014
Ideas about health are reinforced by institutions and their corresponding practices, such as donning a patient's gown in a hospital or prostrating before a healing shrine. Even though we are socialized into regarding such ideologies as "natural" and unproblematic, we sometimes seek to bypass, circumvent, or even transcend the dominant ideologies of our cultures as they are manifested in the institutions of health care. The contributors to this volume describe such contestations and circumventions of health ideologies, and the blurring of therapeutic boundaries, on the basis of case studies from India, the South Asian Diaspora, and Europe, focusing on relations between body, mind, and spirit in a variety of situations. The result is not always the "live and let live" medical pluralism that is described in the literature.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies in the Third Phase: Global Encounters and Emerging Moral Worlds (Fertility, Reproduction and Sexuality: Social and Cultural Perspectives, 31)
Kate Hampshire (editor); Bob Simpson (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Fertility, Reproduction and Sexuality: Social and Cultural Perspectives; 31, 2015
Following the birth of the first "test-tube baby" in 1978, Assisted Reproductive Technologies became available to a small number of people in high-income countries able to afford the cost of private treatment, a period seen as the "First Phase" of ARTs. In the "Second Phase," these treatments became increasingly available to cosmopolitan global elites. Today, this picture is changing -- albeit slowly and unevenly -- as ARTs are becoming more widely available. While, for many, accessing infertility treatments remains a dream, these are beginning to be viewed as a standard part of reproductive healthcare and family planning. This volume highlights this "Third Phase" -- the opening up of ARTs to new constituencies in terms of ethnicity, geography, education, and class

Metallic Modern : Everyday Machines in Colonial Sri Lanka
Nira Wickramasinghe
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2014
Everyday life in the Crown colony of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) was characterized by a direct encounter of people with modernity through the consumption and use of foreign machines - in particular, the Singer sewing machine, but also the gramophone, tramway, bicycle and varieties of industrial equipment. The 'metallic modern' of the 19th and early 20th century Ceylon encompassed multiple worlds of belonging and imagination; and enabled diverse conceptions of time to coexist through encounters with Siam, the United States and Japan as well as a new conception of urban space in Colombo. Metallic Modern describes the modern as it was lived and experienced by non-elite groups - tailors, seamstresses, shopkeepers, workers - and suggests that their idea of the modern was nurtured by a changing material world. Nira Wickramasinghe is Professor and Chair of Modern South Asian Studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Her most recent books are Sri Lanka in the Modern Age: A History of Contested Identities (2006) and L'Invention du Vêtement National au Sri Lanka: Habiller le corps colonise (2006).

Oikos and Market: Explorations in Self-Sufficiency after Socialism (Max Planck Studies in Anthropology and Economy, 2)
Stephen Gudeman (editor); Chris Hann (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Max Planck Studies in Anthropology and Economy Ser., 1, 2015
Self-sufficiency of the house is practiced in many parts of the world but ignored in economic theory, just as socialist collectivization is assumed to have brought household self-sufficiency to an end. The ideals of self-sufficiency, however, continue to shape economic activity in a wide range of postsocialist settings. This volume’s six comparative studies of postsocialist villages in Eastern Europe and Asia illuminate the enduring importance of the house economy, which is based not on the market but on the order of the house. These formations show that economies depend not only on the macro institutions of markets and states but also on the micro institutions of families, communities, and house economies, often in an uneasy relationship.

Extraordinary Encounters: Authenticity and the Interview (Methodology & History in Anthropology, 28)
Katherine Smith (editor), James Staples (editor), Nigel Rapport (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Methodology and History in Anthropology, 28, 1, 2015
Given the anthropological focus on ethnography as a kind of deep immersion, the interview poses theoretical and methodological challenges for the discipline. This volume explores those challenges and argues that the interview should be seen as a special, productive site of ethnographic encounter, a site of a very particular and important kind of knowing. In a range of social contexts and cultural settings, contributors show how the interview is experienced and imagined as a kind of space within which personal, biographic and social cues and norms can be explored and interrogated. The interview possesses its own authenticity, therefore - true to the persons involved and true to their moment of interaction - whilst at the same time providing information on human capacities and proclivities that is generalizable beyond particular social and cultural contexts

Landscapes of Relations and Belonging : Body, Place and Politics in Wogeo, Papua New Guinea
Astrid Anderson
Berghahn Books, Inc., Person, space and memory in the contemporary Pacific -- v. 3, 1st ed., New York, New York State, 2011
Wogeo Island is well-known to anthropologists of Papua New Guinea through the work of Ian Hogbin. Based on substantial fieldwork, the author builds on and expands previous research by showing how Wogeos establish and maintain social relationships and identities connected to place and movement in the physical landscape. This innovative study demonstrates how Wogeo worldviews and social organization can be described in relation to terms of movements, flows and placements in the landscape while, in turn, the landscape is constituted and made meaningful through people’s activities and buildings. The author not only addresses some of the key issues in contemporary anthropology concerning place, gender, kinship, knowledge and power but also fills an important gap in Melanesian ethnography.

Protests, Land Rights, and Riots : Postcolonial Struggles in Australia in the 1980s
Barry Morris
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2014
The 1970s saw the Aboriginal people of Australia struggle for recognition of their postcolonial rights. Rural communities, where large Aboriginal populations lived, were provoked as a consequence of social fragmentation, unparalleled unemployment, and other major economic and political changes. The ensuing riots, protests, and law-and-order campaigns in New South Wales captured the tense relations that existed between indigenous people, the police, and the criminal justice system. In Protests, Land Rights, and Riots, Barry Morris shows how neoliberal policies in Australia targeted those who were least integrated socially and culturally, and who enjoyed fewer legitimate economic opportunities. Amidst intense political debate, struggle, and conflict, new forces were unleashed as a post-settler colonial state grappled with its past. Morris provides a social analysis of the ensuing effects of neoliberal policy and the way indigenous rights were subsequently undermined by this emerging new political orthodoxy in the 1990s. ..

Bridging Divides : Ethno-Political Leadership Among the Russian Sámi
Indra {phono}¢verland; Mikkel Berg-Nordlie; ProQuest (Firm)
Berghahn Books, Inc., 1, 2022
The Sámi are a Northern indigenous people whose land, Sápmi, covers territory in Finland, Norway, Russia, and Sweden. For the Nordic Sámi, the last decades of the twentieth century saw their indigenous rights partially recognized, a cultural and linguistic revival, and the establishment of Sámi parliaments. The Russian Sámi, however, did not have the same opportunities and were isolated behind the closed border until the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This book examines the following two decades and the Russian Sámi’s attempt to achieve a linguistic revival, to mend the Cold War scars, and to establish their own independent ethno-political organizations.

Narrating Victimhood: Gender, Religion and the Making of Place in Post-War Croatia (Space and Place, 11)
Michaela Schäuble
Berghahn Books, Inc., Space and Place Ser., 1, 2022
Mythologies and narratives of victimization pervade contemporary Croatia, set against the backdrop of militarized notions of masculinity and the political mobilization of religion and nationhood. Based on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in rural Dalmatia in the Croatian-Bosnian border region, this book provides a unique account of the politics of ambiguous Europeanness from the perspective of those living at Europe’s margins. Examining phenomena such as Marian apparitions, a historic knights tournament, the symbolic re-signification of a massacre site, and the desolate social situation of Croatian war veterans, __Narrating Victimhood__ traces the complex mechanisms of political radicalization in a post-war scenario. This book provides a new perspective for understanding the ongoing processes of transformation in Southeastern Europe and the Balkans.

Can sustainable resource management be achieved in a situation of radical commodification> of land and other aspects of nature? Focusing on conflicts relating to forest management, mining, and land rights, the author offers an insightful account of present-day challenges for indigenous people to accommodate aspirations for ethnic sovereignty and development.

The Polynesian Iconoclasm: Religious Revolution and the Seasonality of Power (ASAO Studies in Pacific Anthropology, 5)
Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania.;Sissons, Jeffrey
Berghahn Books, Inc., Association for Social Anthropology in Oceania.; ASAO studies in Pacific anthropology, 1. ed, 2014
Within little more than ten years in the early nineteenth century, inhabitants of Tahiti, Hawaii and fifteen other closely related societies destroyed or desecrated all of their temples and most of their god-images. In the aftermath of the explosive event, which Sissons terms the Polynesian Iconoclasm, hundreds of architecturally innovative churches — one the size of two football fields — were constructed. At the same time, Christian leaders introduced oppressive laws and courts, which the youth resisted through seasonal displays of revelry and tattooing. Seeking an answer to why this event occurred in the way that it did, this book introduces and demonstrates an alternative “practice history” that draws on the work of Marshall Sahlins and employs Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, improvisation and practical logic.

Between Prague Spring and French May: Opposition and Revolt in Europe, 1960-1980 (Protest, Culture & Society Book 7)
Martin Klimke (editor); Jacco Pekelder (editor); Joachim Scharloth (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc, Protest, Culture & Society, 1, 2011
Abandoning the usual Cold War–oriented narrative of postwar European protest and opposition movements, this volume offers an innovative, interdisciplinary, and comprehensive perspective on two decades of protest and social upheaval in postwar Europe. It examines the mutual influences and interactions among dissenters in Western Europe, the Warsaw Pact countries, and the nonaligned European countries, and shows how ideological and political developments in the East and West were interconnected through official state or party channels as well as a variety of private and clandestine contacts. Focusing on issues arising from the cross-cultural transfer of ideas, the adjustments to institutional and political frameworks, and the role of the media in staging protest, the volume examines the romanticized attitude of Western activists to violent liberation movements in the Third World and the idolization of imprisoned RAF members as martyrs among left-wing circles across Western Europe.

Urbanized countryside 1968-1993 -- Conclusion: Fault lines.;Earth's fractured geology is visible in its fault lines. It is along these lines that earthquakes occur, sometimes with disastrous effects. These disturbances can significantly influence urban development, as seen in the aftermath of two earthquakes in Messina, Italy, in 1908 and in the Belice Valley, Sicily, in 1968. Following the history of these places before and after their destruction, this book explores plans and developments that preceded the disasters and the urbanism that emerged from the ruins. These stories explore fault lines between "rural" and "urban," "backwardness" and "development," and "before" and "after," shedding light on the role of environmental forces in the history of human habitats.

The Event of <em>Charlie Hebdo</em>: Imaginaries of Freedom and Control (Critical Interventions: A Forum for Social Analysis Book 15)
Alessandro Zagato (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Critical Interventions: A Forum for Social Analysis; 15, 2015
The January 2015 shooting at the headquarters of satirical magazine __Charlie Hebdo__ in Paris and the subsequent attacks that took place in the Île-de-France region were staggeringly violent events. They sparked an enormous discussion among citizens and intellectuals from around Europe and beyond. By analyzing the effects the attacks have had in various spheres of social life, including the political, ideology, collective imaginaries, the media, and education, this collection of essays aims to serve as a contribution as well as a critical response to that discussion. The volume observes that the events being attributed to __Charlie Hebdo__ go beyond sensationalist reports of the mainstream media, transcend the spatial confines of nation states, and lend themselves to an ever-expanding number of mutating discursive formations.

The transatlantic world of higher education : Americans at German universities, 1776-1914
Anja Werner
Berghahn Books, Inc., European studies in American history -- v. 4, New York, New York State, 2013
Between the 1760s and 1914, thousands of young Americans crossed the Atlantic to enroll in German-speaking universities, but what was it like to be an American in, for instance, Halle, Heidelberg, Göttingen, or Leipzig? In this book, the author combines a statistical approach with a biographical approach in order to reconstruct the history of these educational pilgrimages and to illustrate the interconnectedness of student migration with educational reforms on both sides of the Atlantic. This detailed account of academic networking in European educational centers highlights the importance of travel for academic and cultural transformations in nineteenth-century America.

Gypsy Economy : Romani Livelihoods and Notions of Worth in the 21st Century
Micol Brazzabeni (editor); Manuela Ivone Cunha (editor); Martin Fotta (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., The Human Economy; 3, 2015
Economic arrangements of Romanies are complexly related to their social position. The authors of this volume explore these complexities, including how economic exchanges forge key social relationships of gender and ethnicity, how economic opportunities are constructed and seized, and how economic success and failure are transformed into attributes of social persons. They explore how, despite — or perhaps because of — their unstable and ambiguous position within the market economy, shared today with a growing number of people facing precarity and informalisation, Roma and Gypsy communities continuously re-create more or less viable economic strategies. The ethnographically based chapters share accounts of socially and economically vulnerable populations that face their situation with self-determination and creativity.

Regimes of Ignorance: Anthropological Perspectives on the Production and Reproduction of Non-Knowledge (Methodology & History in Anthropology, 29)
Roy Dilley (editor), Thomas G. Kirsch (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Methodology and history in anthropology -- 29, New York, New York State, 2015
Non-knowledge Should Not Be Simply Regarded As The Opposite Of Knowledge, But As Complementary To It: Each Derives Its Character And Meaning From The Other And From Their Interaction. Knowledge Does Not Colonize The Space Of Ignorance In The Progressive March Of Science; Rather, Knowledge And Ignorance Are Mutually Shaped In Social And Political Domains Of Partial, Shifting And Temporal Relationships. This Volume's Ethnographic Analyses Provide A Theoretical Frame Through Which To Consider The Production And Reproduction Of Ignorance, Non-knowledge And Secrecy, As Well As The Wider Implications These Ideas Have For Anthropology And Related Disciplines In The Social Sciences And Humanities. -- From Back Cover. Central America in the New Millennium: Living Transition and Reimagining Democracy (CEDLA Latin America Studies (102))
Jennifer L. Burrell (editor); Ellen Moodie (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., CEDLA Latin America studies (CLAS) -- v. 102, New York, New York State, 2012
Most non-Central Americans think of the narrow neck between Mexico and Colombia in terms of dramatic past revolutions and lauded peace agreements, or sensational problems of gang violence and natural disasters. In this volume, the contributors examine regional circumstances within frames of democratization and neoliberalism, as they shape lived experiences of transition. The authors—anthropologists and social scientists from the United States, Europe, and Central America—argue that the process of regions and nations “disappearing” (being erased from geopolitical notice) is integral to upholding a new, post-Cold War world order—and that a new framework for examining political processes must be accessible, socially collaborative, and in dialogue with the lived processes of suffering and struggle engaged by people in Central America and the world in the name of democracy.

Tailoring Truth: Politicizing the Past and Negotiating Memory in East Germany, 1945-1990 (Contemporary European History, 15)
Jon Berndt Olsen

By Looking At State-sponsored Memory Projects, Such As Memorials, Commemorations, And Historical Museums, This Book Reveals That The East German Communist Regime Obsessively Monitored And Attempted To Control Public Representations Of The Past To Legitimize Its Rule. It Demonstrates That The Regime's Approach To Memory Politics Was Not Stagnant, But Rather Evolved Over Time To Meet Different Demands And Potential Threats To Its Legitimacy. Ultimately The Party Found It Increasingly Difficult To Control The Public Portrayal Of The Past, And Some Dissidents Were Able To Turn The Party's Memory Politics Against The State To Challenge Its Claims Of Moral Authority--provided By Publisher. Beyond Pleasure : Cultures of Modern Asceticism
Evert Peeters (editor); Leen Van Molle (editor); Kaat Wils (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2011
Asceticism, so it is argued in this volume, is a modern category. The ubiquitous cult of the body, of fitness and diet equally evokes the ongoing success of ascetic practices and beliefs. Nostalgic memories of hardship and discipline in the army, youth movements or boarding schools remain as present as the fashionable irritation with the presumed modern-day laziness. In the very texture of contemporary culture, age-old asceticism proves to be remarkably alive. Old ascetic forms were remoulded to serve modern desires for personal authenticity, an authenticity that disconnected asceticism in the course of the nineteenth century from two traditions that had underpinned it since classical antiquity: the public, republican austerity of antiquity and the private, religious asceticism of Christianity. Exploring various aspects such as the history of the body, of aesthetics, science, and social thought in several European countries (Great Britain, France, Germany, Austria and Belgium), the authors show that modern asceticism remains a deeply ambivalent category. Apart from self-realisation, classical and religious examples continue to haunt the ascetic mind.

Who Owns the Stock? : Collective and Multiple Property Rights in Animals
Anatoly M. Khazanov (editor); Günther Schlee (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Integration and Conflict Studies; 5, 2012
"The issue of collective and multiple property rights in animals, such as cattle, camels or reindeers, among pastoralists has never been a subject of special cross-cultural and comparative study. Focusing on pastoralist societies in East and West Africa, the Far North and Siberia, and the Eurasian steppes, this volume addresses the issue of property rights and the changes these societies have undergone due to the direct or indirect influence of modernization and globalization processes. The contributors also investigate the interplay of older sets of rights and modern marketing policies; political, ecological and economic effects of collectivization and de-collectivization; the existence of collective and private property in the Soviet Union and its successor states; state taxation and destocking measures in African dry lands; and the effects of quarantine, as well as import and export regulations. The rich and well-researched ethnographic, historical, and economic data in these chapters provides new theoretical insights into the matter of property rights in animals."--Pub. desc

Where Are All Our Sheep? : Kyrgyzstan, A Global Political Arena
Boris Petric; translated by Cynthia Schoch
Berghahn Books, Inc., Dislocations -- volume 16, New York, New York State, 2015
After the collapse of the USSR, Kyrgyzstan chose a path of economic and political liberalization. Only a few years later, however, the country ceased producing anything of worth and developed a dependence on the outside world, particularly on international aid. Its principal industry, sheep breeding, was decimated by reforms suggested by international institutions providing assistance. Virtually annihilated by privatization of the economy and deserted by Moscow, the Kyrgyz have turned this economic “opening up” into a subtle strategy to capture all manner of resources from abroad. In this study, the author describes the encounters, sometimes comical and tinged with incomprehension, between the local population and the well-meaning foreigners who came to reform them.

New Dangerous Liaisons : Discourses on Europe and Love in the Twentieth Century
Luisa Passerini (editor); Liliana Ellena (editor); Alexander C.T. Geppert (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Making Sense of History; 13, 2010
In Europe, love has been given a prominent place in European self-representations from the Enlightenment onwards. The category of love, stemming from private and personal spheres, was given a public function and used to distinguish European civilisation from others. Contributors to this volume trace historical links and analyse specific connections between the two discourses on love and Europe over the course of the twentieth century, exploring the distinctions made between the public and private, the political and personal. In doing so, this volume develops an innovative historiography that includes such resources as autobiographies, love letters, and cinematic representations, and takes issue with the exclusivity of Eurocentrism. Its contributors put forth hypotheses about the historical pre-eminence of emotions and consider this history as a basis for a non-Eurocentric understanding of new possible European identities.

From Virtue to Vice: Negotiating Anorexia (Food, Nutrition, and Culture, 4)
by Richard A. O'Connor and Penny Van Esterik
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2015
The recovered possess the key to overcoming anorexia. Although individual sufferers do not know how the affliction takes hold, piecing their stories together reveals two accidental afflictions. One is that activity disorders--dieting, exercising, healthy eating--start as virtuous practices, but become addictive obsessions. The other affliction is a developmental disorder, which also starts with the virtuous--those eager for challenge and change. But these overachievers who seek self-improvement get a distorted life instead. Knowing anorexia from inside, the recovered offer two watchwords on helping those who suffer. One is "negotiate," to encourage compromise, which can aid recovery where coercion fails. The other is "balance," for the ill to pursue mind-with-body activities to defuse mind-over-body battles

Chiasmus and Culture
edited by Boris Wiseman and Anthony Paul
Berghahn Books, Berghahn Books, Studies in Rhetoric and Culture; 6, 2022
They explore from a variety of angles what the unsettling logic of chiasmus (from the Greek meaning "cross-wise"), has to tell us about the world, human relations, cultural patterns, psychology, and artistic and poetic creation.

Transatlantic Parallaxes : Toward Reciprocal Anthropology
Anne Raulin (editor); Susan Carol Rogers (editor)
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2015
Anthropological inquiry developed around the study of the exotic. Now that we live in a world that seems increasingly familiar, putatively marked by a spreading sameness, anthropology must re-envision itself. The emergence of diverse national traditions in the discipline offers one intriguing path. This volume, the product of a novel encounter of American anthropologists of France and French anthropologists of the United States, explores the possibilities of that path through an experiment in the reciprocal production of knowledge. Simultaneously native subjects, foreign experts, and colleagues, these scholars offer novel insights into each other’s societies, juxtaposing glimpses of ourselves and a familiar “others” to productively unsettle and enrich our understanding of both.

Simulated Dreams: Zionist Dreams for Israeli Youth (New Directions in Anthropology, 14)
Haim Hazan
Berghahn Books, Inc, Berghahn Books, New York, NY, 2001
At the core of the author's concern stands the question of cultural transmutation in an era riddled with media channels and all-embracing messages. Fragments of the Israeli experience are pieced together in this provocative essay to provide a socio-anthropological agenda for some of the issues involved in the manufacturing of items of symbolic solidarity and common national imagery in an epoch of social disunification and cultural pastiche. The author argues that even though the aesthetic forms of major cultural idioms have unrecognizably altered and are accommodated to befit the shape and style of post-modern living, the basic programs underlying them have remained immutable. Furthermore, it is the quality of adaptability to changing aesthetic conventions that allow such symbolic corner-stones to be left unturned. The case of the youth culture is chose here as a yardstick for examining the double voice of such process - the global versus the tribal.

Atlantic Automobilism: Emergence and Persistence of the Car, 1895-1940 (Explorations in Mobility, 1)
Gijs Mom
Berghahn Books, Inc., Berghahn Books, New York, 2014
Our continued use of the combustion engine car in the 21st century, despite many rational arguments against it, makes it more and more difficult to imagine that transport has a sustainable future. Offering a sweeping transatlantic perspective, this book explains the current obsession with automobiles by delving deep into the motives of early car users. It provides a synthesis of our knowledge about the emergence and persistence of the car, using a broad range of material including novels, poems, films, and songs to unearth the desires that shaped our present "car society." Combining social, psychological, and structural explanations, the author concludes that the ability of cars to convey transcendental experience, especially for men, explains our attachment to the vehicle.-- Provided by Publisher
