The authors include a list of learning objectives by chapter for all three books, and a matrix of topics covered to simplify adding these materials to existing lesson plans. This guide draws on the the authors' experience training teachers to use 3D printers and OpenSCAD (the math modeling software used in the other books) to summarize what a teacher needs to know before class starts, and tips on learning enough to stay ahead of the students as they explore the 3D printable and other models in the book series. Note that this supplement presumes that the reader has one or more of the author's Make: mathematics books. It is not a "Teacher's Edition" which repeats the content of the regular edition books. Those must be purchased separately.

She is the author of technical papers and nonfiction popular articles. She is a coauthor of the 2006 coffeetable book Saturn: A New View from Harry Abrams Publishers. Ms. Horvath has a BS in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT, and an MS in Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering from UCLA. Trigonometry has 2000-year-old roots in everyday useful endeavors, like finding the size of an object too big or far away to measure directly, or navigating from Point A to Point B. However, it is often taught very theoretically, with an emphasis on abstractions. Make: Trigonometry uses 3D printable models and readily-available physical objects like wire and cardboard tubes to develop intuition about concepts in trigonometry and basic analytic geometry. Readers will imagine the thought process of the people who invented these mathematical concepts, and can try out "math experiments" to see for themselves how ingenious ancient navigators and surveyors really were. The analytic geometry part of the book links equations to many of these intuitive concepts, which we explore through in-depth explanations of manipulative models of conic sections. This book is aimed at high school students who might be in Algebra II or Pre-Calculus. It shows the geometrical and practical sides of these topics that otherwise can drown in their own algebra. Make: Trigonometry builds on the basics of the authors' earlier book, Make: Geometry, and is intended as a bridge from that book to their Make: Calculus book. The user can read this book and understand the concepts from the photographs of 3D printable models alone. However, since many models are puzzle-like, we encourage the reader to print the models on any consumer-grade filament based 3D printer. The models are available for download in a freely-available open source repository. They were created in the free program OpenSCAD, and can be 3D printed or modified by the student in OpenSCAD to learn a little coding along the way. About the Author Joan Horvath is the co-founder of Nonscriptum, a consulting and training firm that teaches educators and scientists how to use maker tech. She is a recovering rocket scientist who spent 16 years at JPL and then another 20 as an entrepreneur. Joan is an alumna of MIT, and the co-author of Make: Geometry and Make: Calculus. Contemporary challenges related to walls, borders and encirclement, such as migration, integration and endemic historical conflicts, can only be understood properly from a long-term perspective. This book seeks to go beyond conventional definitions of the long durée by locating the social practice of walling and encirclement in the broadest context of human history, integrating insights from archaeology and anthropology. Such an approach, far from being simply academic, has crucial contemporary relevance, as its focus on origins helps to locate the essential dynamics of this practice, and provides a rare external position from which to view the phenomenon as a transformative exercise, with the area walled serving as an artificial womb or matrix. The modern world, with its ingrained ideas of borders, nation states and other entities, often makes it is very difficult to gain a critical distance and detachment to see beyond conventional perspectives. The unique approach of this book offers an antidote to this problem. Cases discussed in the book range from Palaeolithic caves, the ancient walls of Göbekli Tepe, Jericho and Babylon, to the foundation of Rome, the Chinese Empire, medieval Europe and the Berlin Wall. The book also looks at contemporary developments such as the Palestinian wall, Eastern and Southern European examples, Trump’s proposed Mexican wall, the use of Greece as a bulwark containing migration flows and the transformative experience of voluntary work in a Calcutta hospice. In doing so, the book offers a political anthropology of one of the most fundamental yet perennially problematic human practices: the constructing of walls. Contemporary challenges related to walls, borders and encirclement, such as migration, integration and endemic historical conflicts, can only be understood properly from a long-term perspective. This book seeks to go beyond conventional definitions of the long durée by locating the social practice of walling and encirclement in the broadest context of human history, integrating insights from archaeology and anthropology. Such an approach, far from being simply academic, has crucial contemporary relevance, as its focus on origins helps to locate the essential dynamics of this practice, and provides a rare external position from which to view the phenomenon as a transformative exercise, with the area walled serving as an artificial womb or matrix. The modern world, with its ingrained ideas of borders, nation states and other entities, often makes it is very difficult to gain a critical distance and detachment to see beyond conventional perspectives. The unique approach of this book offers an antidote to this problem. Cases discussed in the book range from Palaeolithic caves, the ancient walls of Göbekli Tepe, Jericho and Babylon, to the foundation of Rome, the Chinese Empire, medieval Europe and the Berlin Wall. The book also looks at contemporary developments such as the Palestinian wall, Eastern and Southern European examples, Trump’s proposed Mexican wall, the use of Greece as a bulwark containing migration flows and the transformative experience of voluntary work in a Calcutta hospice. In doing so, the book offers a political anthropology of one of the most fundamental yet perennially problematic human practices: the constructing of walls. <p>Barbara Horvath's study of the English spoken in Sydney is an important and timely contribution to our knowledge about varieties of English in the world and about variation in urban dialects in particular. It is the first large-scale work to apply recent advances in sociolinguistic theory and methodology to Australian English, and to take account of the complex social changes resulting from immigration that are taking place in Australia's urban population. The study is based on a survey of Sydneysiders of Anglo-Celtic, Greek and Italian background, and is significant not only for the variety of techniques employed in the sociolinguistic analysis, but also for the linguistic variables considered. Dr Horvath's quantitative analysis of intonation and text is a particularly welcome innovation. The volume concludes with an attempt to return to an integrated view of dialect based on co-occuring linguistic features.</p>
