This sixth edition of CALCULUS AND ANALYTIC GEOMETRY preserves the basic features of the previous editions. While maintaining the same logical and critical spirit that has characterized all previous versions of this text, the authors have introduced additional material to provide more intuitive background for the presentation of difficult topics. This interplay between intuition and rigor is obviously essential to a full understanding of the calculus. It has been the authors’ purpose to achieve a reasonable balance between these qualities. As in the fifth edition, derivatives and integrals make an early appearance. Introductory material on algebra and analytic geometry is presented in a preliminary chapter, Chapter 0. This chapter will be a review for many students. After a short chapter on functions, limits are presented in Chapter 2. This chapter is assembled in such a way that the limit theorems can be passed over quickly if the teacher so desires. Chapters 3 and 4 are concerned with derivatives and the usual applications to extrema and motion of a particle. Although integrals are defined in Chapter 5 in terms of upper and lower sums, the fundamental theorem 1s soon given so that integrals can be evaluated as antiderivatives. By the end of Chapter 6, the calculus of algebraic functions has been introduced. The next three chapters cover the calculus of transcendental functions. A substantial number of geometrical and physical applications is then presented in Chapter 10. Chapters 11 and 12, on improper integrals, infinite series, and related topics, may be postponed until later without breaking the continuity of the course. Chapters 13 through 16 focus on two- and three-dimensional vectors, plane and space curves, surfaces, and elementary multidimensional calculus. Chapter 17 is an optional chapter on line integrals, Green’s theorem, and change of variable in multiple integrals. The final chapter is on differential equations.

Biochemical Modulation at the present time defines an area of study in which the intracellular metabolism of a given anti cancer agent is modulated (usually by a noncytotoxic agent or a cytotoxic agent at sufficiently low dosage to make it non cytotoxic) in order to either increase the effectiveness of the particular agent against tumor cells or decrease its cytotox icity against normal cells. The major focus of modulation has been the agents 5-fluorouracil (FUra), arabinofuranosylcytosine (ara-C), methotrexate (MTX) and a few alkylating agents. The major thrust of the studies has been to increase the flow of the anticancer agent along the pathway responsible for the formation of the cytotoxic species: for example, FUra to FUTP or ara-C to ara-CTP. While in most cases the application of research re sults to clinical trials does not require the subsequent exper tise of the laboratory researchers, application of biochemical modulatory schemes to clinical protocols necessitate a dramatic break with the past procedures. As shown in the laboratory clinical loop below, close collaboration between the laboratory and clinical investigator is essential. Organized in May 1863 to meet the Union Army's growing manpower needs, the Invalid Corps -- later renamed the Veteran Reserve Corps -- was a unique military unit. With more than twenty-four regiments of troops, nearly all of them men disabled by illness or combat wounds, it was at one point twice as large as the entire pre-war United States Army. During four years of service its troops enforced the draft, guarded prisoners and vital outposts, protected rail lines and supply depots, and served as military police in cities all across the country. Members of the Corps escorted President Lincoln's body home to Illinois, and after the war its officers formed the nucleus of the new Freedman's Bureau. This volume brings together some 143 letters written by Colonel Charles F. Johnson, an officer who served with the 18th Veteran Reserve Corps after sustaining debilitating wounds during the Seven Days' Battles in June 1862. Edited with an introduction by Fred Pelka, the letters describe the day-to-day circumstances of "The Cripple Brigade," as it was derisively called, as well as guerrilla warfare in Missouri, combat in Virginia, and barracks life in Washington, D.C. Johnson was a keen observer of his nation at war, and his correspondence with his wife Mary is by turns literate and comic, objective and personal. In his introduction and annotations, Pelka provides a detailed history of the Invalid Corps and explores the experience of disability in nineteenth-century America. He looks at how the nation responded to the sudden appearance of tens of thousands of newly disabled young men, and traces how members of the Invalid Corps fought not only to restore the Union but also to retain their dignity as Americans and as human beings.
