Delicati and Delicia in the Roman Empire. A Study of Epigraphic and Literary Sources
Valeria La Monaca
British Archaeological Reports, BAR International Series, 3233, 2025
Until now, scholarly literature has largely presented a salacious image of the slaves known as delicati or delicia in the Roman Empire. This study aims to bring together literary, epigraphic, and iconographic sources found on funerary monuments in order to offer a more nuanced perspective. These delicati and delicia were not merely objects of pleasure but also symbols of social status. Libertine families, imitating the senatorial aristocracy and the Imperial household, displayed these slaves as a sign of social ascent, a process that necessarily involved achieving a solid economic capacity. Along with discussion of the meaning and interpretation of these and related terms, this volume presents a comprehensive catalogue of the relevant epigraphic material.

Aere Clusa: Bronzene Rahmen, Profile und Zierleisten im römischen Italien und den nordwestlichen Provinzen
Stefanie Becht
British Archaeological Reports Limited, BAR International Series; S3181, 2024
German with summaries in English and Italian Bronzene Rahmen, Profile und Zierleisten waren einst ein weitverbreitetes Phänomen. The bronze frames, profiles and ornamental architectural mouldings described in this book were most popular during the Julio-Claudian era in the Roman Republic. The text includes a detailed catalogue that can serve as reference for identifying bronze architectural elements from the Roman period.

Death in the Iron Age of eastern England : an interdisciplinary analysis of human remains from 800 BC - AD 60
Michael Legge
British Archaeological Reports Limited, BAR British series, 678, Oxford, UK, 2022
"Death in the Iron Age of Eastern England explores the treatment of the non-cremated dead from 800BC - c.AD60 in what is now eastern England. The research presented identifies large-scale patterns in post-mortem treatment, furthering existing debates around excarnation practices, inhumation traditions and the 'invisible dead.' The region has seen comparatively little in-depth study in recent years, while the quantity of excavated material has increased exponentially due to the rise of development-led archaeology. This book gathers and presents the known data to shed light on an under-researched part of Iron Age Britain through the study of complete inhumations, partial skeletal remains and disarticulated human bones. The data is interpreted via integrated methodological approaches that combine contextual archaeology, osteology and bone taphonomy to better understand post-mortem processes, regional variation and the role of the dead in Iron Age societies"--Cover page 4

Archäozoologie am Mont Lassois: Ein archäozoologischer Beitrag zur Wirtschaftsgeschichte späthallstattzeitlicher Zentralorte
Janette Horvath
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3090, 2022
This is an archaeozoological study of the fortified settlement of Mont Lassois, near Vix, Burgundy, France, from the late Hallstatt period, ca. 530 - 450 v.Chr.

lgli/Tasic_ea_Eds_(2020)_Making Space into place_Aegean_Balkan_neolithic.pdf
Making spaces into places : the north Aegean, the Balkans and western Anatolia in the Neolithic
Nenad N. Tasić, Dushka Urem-Kotsou and Marcel Burić
BAR Publishing, BAR International Series 3001, 2020
"During three millennia of the Neolithic in southeastern Europe important changes in the social organisation, everyday practices and beliefs formed a diverse and rich cultural landscape expressed in settlement patterns, architecture and numerous aspects of material culture. A growing body of data uncovered over the last few decades shows striking variety in settlement organisation, from single-layered, short-lived sites to long-lived tell settlements located in different geographical settings. In addition, small sites (e.g. 0.5 ha) and extended settlements also appear in most sub-regions. This volume brings together new data on the Neolithic of southeastern Europe, emphasising the organisation and use of space within the regions of Northern Greece, the Balkan hinterland and north-western Turkey. To this end, individual chapters focus either on the intra-site organisation of recently excavated settlements or provide an up-to-date synthesis on the regional level, combining old and new data."--Publisher's web site

BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3111, 2022
This book studies the characteristics and evolution of material culture during the Iron Age in Cantabria. Analysis of the entire material record of the archaeological sites from this period has been carried out. It characterises the material culture of the Early and Late Iron Age by analysing pottery production and identifying the moment of introduction of the potter ́s wheel and iron metallurgy. Additionally, socioeconomic activities such as agriculture, livestock and trade are examined through archaeological data. Finally, data from unpublished campaigns carried out in the hillforts of Argüeso-Fontibre (Campoo de Suso) and Las Rabas (Campoo de Enmedio) have been included and issues of cave usage during this period is addressed.

Un’ area di frontiera: La Bitinia dall’età arcaica all’ età ellenistica
Ferdinando Ferraioli
BAR Publishing, BAR international series, 3106, Oxford, UK, 2022
This book presents a study of Bithynia from the Archaic to the Hellenistic period. It is organized in two parts, divided chronologically by the expedition of Alexander the Great to Asia and the subsequent foundation of the Hellenistic kingdom of Bithynia. The first part deals with the main problems relating to the Greek foundations in this geographical area (Astakos, Kalchedon, Kios, Myrleia and Olbia) and the regional influence of the great powers (Athens, Sparta, Persia) in the late Archaic and Classical period. Ample space is given to the non-Greek presence in the area, examining the issues relating to the satrapy of Phrygia. In the second part, the focus is on the Hellenistic kingdom of Bithynia, whose formation profoundly modifies the political and social balances present in the area in the previous period. Finally, an appendix is dedicated to a short exposition concerning the monetary issues of the kings of Bithynia.

The Hellenistic and Roman harbours of Delos and Kenchreai : their construction, use and evolution
Ioannis Nakas
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3099; Nautical Archaeology Society Monograph (NAS) 6, 2022
This book proposes a new approach to the Hellenistic and Roman harbours of the Aegean, based on the combined study of harbours and contemporary ships, seamanship, and commerce. It focuses on the capacity of harbours to accommodate and serve certain numbers of ships, their cargo, their crews, and their passengers. This is achieved through the study of a variety of archaeological, written, and geomorphological data on harbour configuration, and subsequent analysis relating these harbours with the ships that were most likely to use them. Two harbours are used as cases studies, the important commercial centres of Delos and Kenchreai. The results reached concerning these harbours are then discussed in a wider perspective and contextualized with other contemporary sites in the Aegean, as well as within a wider scientific discussion over commerce and seamanship in the Hellenistic and Roman Mediterranean.

British Archaeological Reports Oxford Limited, BAR international series -- 2750, BAR international series -- 2750., Oxford, England, 2015
This volume includes data from surveys and excavations, in addition to the analysis of unpublished materials preserved in local museums. The map 1 shows the amplitude of the views presented here. The publishers have had a particular care to stimulate and organize the contributions according to a geographical criterion that includes the whole of Asia Minor, from the west coast to the central and northern part, up to the east. The same attention has been careful to include topics of the different periods, from the Neolithic to the modern age (19th century). Of course some contributions are focused specially in some specific areas. This book contains papers in English and some papers in German with English abstracts.

The final Bronze Age settlement of Casalmoro (Mantua, Italy) : finds and chronology
Pau, Laura
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3011, 2020 nov 30
"Casalmoro lies along the Chiese river in the province of Mantua, in the northern Po Plain, and it represents the biggest known settlement area for Final Bronze Age Italy. This was one of the new settlements founded in the twelfth century BC north of the Po, in the region between eastern Lombardy and Veneto, after the crisis of the Terramare culture. This work provides a typological analysis and a chronological definition of the finds, and presents a significant amount of pottery and bronze artefacts for the first time. It then proposes a framing of Casalmoro in its regional context and in relation to other areas of the Italian Peninsula at the beginning of the Final Bronze Age. This settlement area constitutes an important context both for chronological aspects and to understand the processes leading to the birth of the proto-urban centres at the dawn of the Iron Age."--Back cover

Cultural identity, transition, and interaction at Salango, Coastal Ecuador : a study of pottery from the Early Regional Development funerary precinct
Richard Lunniss
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3109, 2022
The Early Regional Development (100 BC-AD 300) funerary precinct at Salango, on the central coast of Ecuador, was situated at the point of convergence of the Bahía II and Early Guangala culture zones. With plentiful line drawings and colour photographs, this book uses pottery from the precinct to present a detailed and closely contextualized description of Early Regional Development ceramic traditions for coastal Ecuador. As a result, we gain valuable insights into the dynamics of cultural identity, transition, and interaction as manifest in a highly structured pottery assemblage from a key Pre-Columbian site of this area. Attention is brought to designs made with the two principal decorative modes: iridescent paint on serving wares and red finger paint designs on kitchen wares. Assemblage analysis points to the complex set of cultural factors and processes involved in its composition, and an important local ceramic tradition is identified for the first time. Spanish summaries are included for each chapter.

Imprints of the archaeology of northern Nigeria : landscape, society and crafts around Kirfi, Bauchi Region
Abubakar Sule Sani
British Archaeological Reports (Oxford) Limited, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3062, 2021
Abubakar Sule Sani’s pioneering book combines archaeological, ethnographic and historical data to construct a compelling narrative about the people of the Bauchi region in northern Nigeria. It deploys a social theory of frontier to understand how Borno and other Hausa states impacted on the development of cultural process that have evolved to dominate across the Savannah region over the past 1,500 years. The research presents a cultural typology from pottery to explain social connections in the past, which will be of interest not only for archaeologists, but also for art historians and anthropologists. It evaluates the impact of Islam and the 19th century Jihad of Uthman Ibn Fodio on settlement patterns and the operation of political systems across prominent Sahel and Savannah states in the past. Sule’s book therefore contributes to the understanding of the peoples of Bauchi hitherto unknown archaeologically, arguing that the combined use of oral and material sources is important for identifying cultural developments in most African societies where past written data are deficient.

Gorse Stacks - 2000 Years of Quarrying and Waste Disposal in Chester
R Cuttler; Christopher Hewitson; University of Birmingham Birmingham Archaeology
British Archaeological Reports Limited, Birmingham Archaeology monograph series, Oxford, England, 2012
"The site of Delamere Street lies just outside the North gate of ... Roman and medieval Chester and in recent years has been subject to intensive investigation as part of the Gorse Stacks development ... This publication represents the culmination of those investigations carried out by Birmingham Archaeology during 2006 and 2008. ... The Roman activity on the site was represented mainly by large sandstone quarry pits, which were later reused for the disposal of rubbish from within the fortress. A large quantity of pottery, animal bone, and metal artefacts were recovered from the fills of these pits dating to the late 1st to early 2nd centuries, representing a snapshot of daily life within and around the fortress. ... The quarrying ... was resumed in the 16th century ... with the quarrying being infilled in the subsequent centuries after the sandstone supply had been exhausted. The infilling of this quarry with domestic and industrial waste again provided a snapshot of activity taking place in Chester during the 18th-20th centuries."--Summary, p. vii.

3D and 4D cartography of archaeological stratigraphy : a case study at the Western Forum in Ostia Antica
Undine Lieberwirth
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3040, 2021
This monograph focuses on one of the most interesting sections of the Main Forum of Ostia Antica, the ancient commercial port of Rome, during the 2nd-6th centuries AD. With a detailed 3D reconstruction of all collected information, it is possible to gain detailed insights into the development and destruction of the city centre during the transition from Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages. The applied 3D volume map in this study makes this possible by combining 2D, 2.5D and 3D solid objects inside a real geo-space. It completes the 3D space, generally filled with hollow objects, with content. With this work, Undine Lieberwirth gives archaeologists a free and open ready-to-use tool. The resulting space-time model of archaeological stratigraphy, geophysics and pedology opens new perspectives on 3D documentation and 3D analysis of archaeological and archaeology-related data. Her intention is not only to preserve archaeological excavation data in the best way possible but also to prepare them for future 3D and 4D analysis. The digital 3D cartography offers the perfect framework for this. To represent these 3D models appropriately, the usual 2D images in this monograph are replaced with 8 videos.

Dying young : a bioarchaeological analysis of child health in Roman Britain
Anna Rohnbogner
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports British Series 673; Archaeology of Roman Britain 7, 2022
Dying Young explores childhood morbidity and mortality during the 1st to 5th century AD. The detailed osteological analysis of 953 non-adult (0 - 17 years) skeletons from 15 sites paints a rich picture of the lived realities of Romano-British children in towns and settlements of the countryside. Health and disease are examined under the themes of infant mortality, growth, diet, working lives, infection, access to resources and exploitation. Skeletal evidence indicates higher status of the urban population, which is in stark contrast to nutritional stress and a tough living environment in the countryside. The data suggests exploitation of the rural indigenous population, as well as rural-to-urban migration of adolescents, potentially in the search of work. Patterns in Romano-British childhood health are considered in context by comparison with similar studies for Iron Age and post-medieval periods. This volume highlights the importance of skeletons, particularly those of non-adults, as a multi-faceted resource for understanding the forgotten and marginalised people of Roman Britain.

Mesoamerican Codices: Calendrical knowledge and ceremonial practice in Indigenous religion and history (International)
Alessia Frassani
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3085, 2022
Religious manuscripts from ancient and early colonial Mexico offer a direct pathway into indigenous worldviews through the uniquely Mesoamerican medium of pictography. During the thousands of years preceding Spanish invasion, a complex calendrical system developed in the region, forming the basic organizing principle of this pictorial language. This book offers new interpretations and insights on both calendrics and the related iconography of Mesoamerican religious manuscripts, based on the author?s field work in the Sierra Mazateca in northern Oaxaca. Detailed calendrical analysis is included, along with audio recordings of chants, prayers, and ceremonies available as an online download. The author?s novel approach questions accepted notions of divination, chronology, and the dichotomy between ritual and historical time.0This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 License. Down by the water : interdisciplinary studies in human-environment interactions in watery spaces
Veronica Walker Vadillo, Emilia Mataix Ferrándiz, Elisabeth Holmqvist
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3108; Cultural Studies in Maritime and Underwater Archaeology 4, 2022
Waterways have been key factors in the development of societies from prehistoric times, particularly due to their role as vectors for cultural interactions, material exchange, and transmission of knowledge. The fluidity of these highways of transport and communications is tightly linked to the presence of transit points: spaces with unique geographical characteristics that acted as nodal points between different communities. Transit points are thus defined as places of intense social contacts, putting objects of physical geography into the domain of social sciences and humanities. The subject is challenging, as activities that happen in aquatic spaces seldom leave substantial archaeological traces behind. Nevertheless, by focusing on the intersection between humans and their environment down by the water, this book demonstrates what can be achieved by changing the research paradigm to one that fully embraces the nuances of the aquatic world, and especially the intricate connection between society and waterscapes.

Las primeras sociedades neandertales de la Region Cantabrica (BAR International) (Spanish and English Edition)
Lazuén, Talía
British Archaeological Reports, BAR international series -- 2452, Oxford, England, England, 2012
"This volume presents research on the early Middle Palaeolithic in Cantabrian Spain (northern Atlantic façade), in particular on the economic and social behaviour of the Neanderthal groups living in the region between OIS 7 and OIS 4. The study is focused on the production, management and use of lithic tools, the strategies to capture and work with animal and plant resources, the ways of exploiting the territory and the range of social organisation within a diachronic and regional framework. This approach emphasises the reconstruction of the whole technical system as it reflects the social system and the historical dynamics in which it developed."--Publisher's website.

The archaeology of conflicts : early modern military encampments and material culture
Maxime Poulain, Marc Brion, Arne Verbrugge
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3093, 2022
For the first time, this volume brings together an international group of experts on the topic of early modern military encampments in Northwestern Europe. Despite the flourishing of conflict archaeology across the continent, the discipline lacks a consistent terminology and adequate typology for describing and interpreting the large variety of structures in encampments and the finds they contain. On a methodological level, it remains difficult to detect these large-scale but low-impact military features in the small windows offered by trial trenching. Many of these sites go unrecognized, as a result of their ephemeral nature and lack of comparative framework and are therefore subsequently destroyed. The authors in this book take on this challenge, giving an overview of the documents, features and finds that are linked to military encampments and the methodologies that can be applied for their identification and interpretation.

Pugio - Gladius Brevis Est: History and technology of the Roman battle dagger (BAR International Series)

British Archaeological Reports Limited, British Archaeological Reports, international series, Oxford, 2012
This study examines in depth the pugio (pl. pugiones), a short dagger- sword and one of the weapons of choice of the Roman army. It was the weapon that killed Julius Caesar. Its rich decoration and the use of precious metals have given it legendary status, which has been enhanced by a scarcity of literary sources and the lack of a clear explanation of its function or the specific use soldiers made of it. This work tries to fill this gap, basing its finds exclusively on undisputed data and sources. This study of the pugio takes us through the history and evolution of the Roman army itself

Fluvial Processes in the Pleistocene of Northern Europe (BAR International Series)
Chu, Wei
University of Michigan Press, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 2797, 2016
Ancient rivers have altered many Palaeolithic sites, obfuscating our ability to understand early human behavior. Building on previous models characterizing fluvial disturbance, the research presented in this volume focuses on identifying new ways ofunderstanding how lithic assemblages are affected by rivers through a series of experiments. It is argued that these effects are predictable, but dependent on aspects of river and artifact morphology. It is suggested that this new knowledge improvesour understanding of the earliest human occupations of Northern Europe.

Sironi, Osvaldo H.
University of Michigan Press, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 2982, 2020
This book studies the way of life in mining landscapes from a historical-archaeological perspective, analysing the available historical documentation and material culture recovered from mining archaeological sites in the north of Mendoza, in central western Argentina.

Cumbo, Cristina
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 2947, 2019 aug 30
This book analyses all the frescoes in the Early Christian Roman catacombs to identify and catalogue the so-called gammadiae, represented on the hem of the pallium of the characters. It interrogates their meaning through a thematic subdivision of iconographic themes and a topographical overview. The study explores beyond evidences found in the Roman cemetery: "travelling" through Egypt and Israel to discover textile finds; touching the fascinating world of the portrait-sarcophagi, as well as that of the frescoes in the synagogue of Dura Europos; and finally, examining Christian, profane and Jewish mosaics. This book, with a rich catalogue of 209 forms, is a starting point for further research, but it is also an important contribution to investigate an iconographic theme that has always been considered extremely intricate.

Rethinking Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic Architecture in Central Anatolia
Jana Anvari
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3061, 2021
This book evaluates the epistemology by which archaeology has translated the architectural record at Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic (6500-5500 BC) sites in central Anatolia into interpretations of social organisation. The first part of the book provides a summary of existing knowledge on the study region, architecture in particular. The second part conducts a content analysis of 284 publications and systematically maps and critiques the archaeological discourse around Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic architecture and social organisation. As a by-product of this discussion, the book also provides an exploration of how people in central Anatolia during this period used architecture to create communities. In the tradition of reflexive archaeology, the main purpose of this book is to critically evaluate past research practices to contribute to their improvement. It seeks to improve the research tools to understand the Late Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic as important transformative time periods in Anatolian prehistory that influenced the further course of southwest Asian and European prehistory, for example by initiating development towards social stratification.

Giovanni Mastronuzzi, Valeria Melissano
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3103, 2022
Starting in 1991 in the inland of Otranto, an important Palaeochristian and Byzantine complex was brought to light during the excavations of the University of Salento, led by Francesco D’Andria, and subsequently by Giovanni Mastronuzzi and Valeria Melissano. This book focuses on the study of the cemetery scattered around a martyrium church built in the second half of the 4th century AD. Every tomb has been analysed and presented: grave goods and bioarchaeological data contribute to the reconstruction of a community of the southern Apulia between the 4th and 6th centuries AD. Particular attention has been given to the study of rituals looking at the baptismal symbology, the organisation of funerary meals (refrigerium), the use of coins amongst grave-goods, and then attempts to reconstruct the social-persona. A number of appendices integrate the data and show some of the methodological aspects of the work.

Temple Deposits in Early Dynastic Egypt: The case of Tell Ibrahim Awad: The case of Tell Ibrahim Awad
van Haarlem, Willem
University of Michigan Press, BAR international series, 2931, Oxford, 2019
This book offers an extensive discussion of the several types of deposits (mainly consisting of votive objects like human and animal figures, model boats and shrines, mace heads and jewellery) found in the Early Dynastic temple of Tell Ibrahim Awad, in the Eastern Nile Delta of Egypt. 0The introduction presents a general description of the site, its geographical and historical context and a specific description of the successive temple layers (between 3300 and 1950 BC). This is followed by a detailed discussion of the votives themselves (material, production, meaning, ritual presentation) and other objects (ceramics, animal bones, lithic tools and temple decorations) found in the deposits, the rituals with which they were associated and comparisons with finds from other sites in Egypt and abroad (Syria/Palestine and Mesopotamia). 0Images and a detailed catalogue of the objects are also included in the volume

'Make it According to Plan': Workshop scenes in Egyptian tombs of the Old Kingdom (International)
Michelle Hampson
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3083, 2022
The tomb paintings and reliefs of Ancient Egypt constitute a major source of evidence for the historical and cultural reconstruction of this fascinating civilisation, but the compilation and detailed analysis of both the iconographic and textual data contained in such scenes in one volume is seldom undertaken. This book focuses on one of the main themes illustrated - craftsmen at work - and uses an original micro-analytical approach to determine the key conventions of their representation. Industries such as boat building, carpentry, jewellery making, leatherwork, metalwork, sculpture and stone vessel making are examined. Particular emphasis is given to the postures and actions of the figures, their methods, tools and interactions, as well as their clothing, physical features and objects on which they work. A catalogue of scenes, some previously unpublished, is included, together with over 2,000 plans and line drawings, innovative isometric diagrams, text and translation summaries, and appendices.

Dynastic deeds : hunt scenes in the funerary imagery of the Achaemenid Eastern Mediterranean
Poggio, Alessandro
University of Michigan Press, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 2974, 2020
This study adopts a transregional approach that focuses on connectivity dynamics in order to present a wider picture of artistic, cultural and political phenomena in the Mediterranean. It examines dynastic funerary art at the end of the fifth century and in the fourth century BC by focusing - through a wide range of evidence - on what funerary images can reveal about the societies that produced them. It analyses renowned dynastic tombs from south-western Anatolia (present-day Turkey) such as the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus and the Nereid Monument of Xanthos, but also from Phoenicia (present-day Lebanon). A common element among the similarities displayed by these tombs is the nearly constant presence of the multiple-quarry hunt iconography, which consists of prey from different species depicted in one figurative programme. The Eastern Mediterranean under Persian Achaemenid rule is portrayed as an interconnected cultural and political area with specific features instead of merely being an area between the Greek and Persian worlds.

Materiali protostorici dalla grotta Vittorio Vecchi (Sezze Romano, LT)
Guidi, Alessandro ;Rosini, Lucia
University of Michigan Press, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 2919, 2019
This book presents the results of field research campaigns led by the authors, and consists in a publication of the results of their 1988-1989 excavations in a cave in Central Italy, the Grotta Vittorio Vecchi (Sezze, LT).The cave, discovered by speleologists, turned out to have been used as the burial site for more than 40 members of a community living in the area, and to contain archaeological material of both cultural and chronological relevance.Study of the pottery and metal objects found (which form the focus of this volume) allowed the authors to date the utilisation of the cave to between the Early and Middle Bronze Age (that is, around the first half of the second millennium BC): a datum that agrees with the broader framework of the funerary and cultural use of caves in protohistoric central Italy.

Past Imperfect: The contested early history of the Mapungubwe Archive, South Africa (International)
Sian Tiley-Nel
BAR Publishing, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 3080, 2022
This book interrogates the context, primary literature and silent gaps in the Mapungubwe Archive held at the University of Pretoria. It examines the multiple narratives and ignored indigenous histories of Mapungubwe in South Africa, prior to the scientific gold discovery of 1933. Using postmodern notions of archival theory and science as a central argument, the author demonstrates how the Mapungubwe Archive needs to be questioned, not only as a historical source, but as point of contemporary discourse within global trends of the archival turn and lack of knowledge, specifically on African archives. The book elucidates the origins, research control, powers and authoritative trajectory of Mapungubwe’s colonial and nationalist past, through the institutional lens of the Archaeology Committee. Contestation is focused on Mapungubwe’s controlled history as a ‘treasure trove’ in 1933 under the State and how later, research mirrors present legal heritage debates on reversionary rights of ownership versus responsible rights of stewardship. Using the conceptual notion of history as an imperfect past, the author contends that Mapungubwe’s contested past is inherently unfinished and flawed, because the past constantly challenges ideas of the present.

Carta archeologica di Vaste – territorio comunale di Poggiardo (Puglia meridionale)
Mastronuzzi, Giovanni ;Ghio, Fabrizio ;Melissano, Valeria
University of Michigan Press, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 2939, 2019
This archaeological map of the municipal territory of Poggiardo is intended as a compendium of the research conducted over the last thirty years by University of Salento in cooperation with Italian and international research institutions. The aims of the project include the recovery, analysis and enhancement of earlier data and an updating of these data with more recent discoveries; all of these have been collected and shown in graphic and cartographic form, to facilitate the outlining of a diachronic picture of the ancient settlement and of its surrounding territory. This study has been devised in such a way as to make it useful not only for scholars, but also as a support for the local municipalities in establishing the guidelines for urban growth and the development of the territory, taking into consideration the preservation of Cultural Heritage and the environment and landscape. The development of this publication has been realised under the auspices of the Laboratory of Classical Archaeology (Department of Cultural Heritage, Università del Salento).
