Armenian Apocrypha Relating to Angels and Biblical Heroes Michael E. Stone SBL Press, Early Judaism and its literature, 45, 2016
Explore how the vivid and creative Armenian spiritual tradition shaped biblical stories to serve new needs Michael E. Stone’s latest book includes texts from Armenian manuscripts that are relevant to the development and growth of biblical themes and subjects. Most of these texts have not been published previously. Stone has collected a fascinating corpus of texts about biblical heroes, such as Joseph and Jonah, Nathan the Prophet, and Asaph the Psalmist. In addition, he has included documents illustrating particular points of the biblical story. This work reflects not just on how the Bible was interpreted in medieval times, but also how its stories and details were shaped by and served the needs of the vivid and creative Armenian spiritual tradition. Features: Expanded stories from Exodus Introductions, translations, and notes Insights into the Armenian "Embroidered Bible," through which many biblical incidents were known to Armenian literature, art, and thought

An editio minor of the Armenian version of the Testaments of the twelve patriarchs by Michael E. Stone; with the collaboration of Vered Hillel Peeters Publishers, Hebrew University Armenian studies -- 11, Hebrew University Armenian studies -- 11., Leuven, Belgium, 2012
"The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs is a much-debated apocryphal work, but it is usually considered to be a Christian work of the second century CE, including many, ancient Jewish traditions. It is of considerable significance for the history of Judaism and Christianity. The Armenian version, associated with the Armenian Bible translation, has long been considered to be a very faithful rendering of an early Greek text. The present work is a critical editio minor of this version, based on 11 selected manuscripts of a total of over 70. It is provided with an English translation, a commentary and extensive indexes, of importance alike to Armenian textual studies and translation practice. This completes the series of critical editions of the apocryphal works most closely associated with the biblical corpus in Armenian (4 Ezra - Stone, UPATS and Joseph and Asenath - Burchard, HUAS). These are some of the best editions of any Armenian biblical associated texts."--Page 4 of cover

The embroidered Bible : studies in biblical apocrypha and pseudepigrapha in honour of Michael E. Stone DiTommaso Lorenzo Koninklijke Brill N.V., Studia in Veteris Testamenti Pseudepigrapha; 26, 2017
This Festschrift contains forty-one original essays and six tribute papers in honour of Michael E. Stone, Gail Levin de Nur Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies and Professor Emeritus of Armenian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The volume's main theme is Old Testament Pseudepigrapha, envisioned in its broadest sense: apocryphal texts, traditions, and themes from the Second-Temple period to the High Middle Ages, in Judaism, Christianity and, to a lesser extent, Islam. Most essays present new or understudied texts based on fresh manuscript evidence; the others are thematic in approach. The volume's scope and focus reflect those of Professor Stone's scholarship, without a special emphasis on Armenian studies.

Armenian Apocrypha: The Short Questionnaire from Adam to Moses Michael E. Stone SBL Press, Early Judaism and its Literature, 58, 2025
Short Questionnaire, an Armenian question-and-answer text that survives in a seventeenth-century manuscript, draws on Armenian parabiblical traditions to systematically explore biblical events from creation to the exodus. The volume includes Michael E. Stone’s translation, extensive commentary, and twenty-seven essays that trace the history of parabiblical concepts and events from the Second Temple and early Christian periods down to the second millennium. Including stories of Satan’s fall from the garden, the raven’s role in Abel’s murder, the burial places of Adam and Eve, and Noah’s fourth son, the book forms a dictionary of Armenian parabiblical traditions for scholars and students interested in reception history in early Judaism and Christianity.

Adam And Eve In The Armenian Tradition, Fifth Through Seventeenth Centuries (early Judaism And Its Literature) (society Of Biblical Literature: Early Judaism And Its Literature) Michael E. Stone Society of Biblical Literature, SBL Early Judaism and Its Literature, 38, 2013
The Adam and Eve stories are a foundational myth in the Jewish and Christian worlds, and the way they were recounted reveals a great deal about those doing the retelling. How did the Armenians retell these stories? What values do these retellings express about men and women, their life in the world, sin and redemption? Presented here are twelve hundred years of Armenian telling of the Genesis 1-3 stories in an unparalleled collection of all significant narratives of Adam and Eve in Armenian literature prose and poetry, homilies and commentaries, calendary and mathematical texts from its inception in the fifth century to the seventeenth century. This seminal resource contributes to the lively current discussion of how biblical and apocryphal traditions were retold, embroidered, and transformed into the lenses through which the Bible itself was read.

Jews in ancient and medieval Armenia : first century BCE to fourteenth century CE Michael E. Stone, Aram Topchyan, Head of the Department of Secular Literature and Philology Aram Topchyan Oxford University Press, USA, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2022
It was once common consensus that there was no significant Jewish community in ancient and medieval Armenia. The discovery and excavation (1997-2002) of a Jewish cemetery of the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries in southern Armenia substantially changed this picture. In this volume, Stone and Topchyan assemble evidence about the Jews of Armenia from earliest times to the fourteenth century. Based on research of the Greco-Roman period, the authors are able to draw new conclusions about the transfer of Jews--including the High Priest Hyrcanus--from the north of Palestine and other countries to Armenia by King Tigran the Great in the first century BCE. The fact that descendants of King Herod ruled in Armenia in Roman times and that some noble Armenian families may have had Jewish origin is discussed. The much-debated identification of the Mountains of Ararat of Noah's Ark fame as well as ancient biblical and other references to Ararat and the Caucasus are re-assessed, and new evidence is adduced that challenges the scientific consensus. The role of Jews during the Seljuk, Mongol, and later times is also presented, from surviving sources in Armenian, Arabic, Hebrew, and others. The volume also includes studies of medieval Jewish sources on Armenia and the Armenians and of communication between Armenia and the Holy Land. Documents from the Cairo Geniza, newly uncovered inscriptions, medieval itineraria , and diplomatica also throw light on Armenia in the context of the Turkic Khazar kingdom, which converted to Judaism in the latter part of the first century CE. It responds both to new archeological discoveries in Armenia and to the growing interest in the history of the region that extends north from the Euphrates and into the Caucasus.

The Cheirograph of Adam in Armenian and Romanian Traditions: New Texts and Images (Eastern Christian Cultures in Contact, 1) MICHAEL E. STONE Brepols Publishers, Eastern Christian Cultures in Contact, 1, 1, 2023
This book explores the legend of Adam’s Contract with Satan that was made after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. This legend was current in the Eastern Orthodox churches of SE Europe as well as in the Caucasus. Unknown forms of the legend have been found in two traditions, the Romanian and the Armenian, and are investigated here. Notably this legend has found its way into folk stories and sometimes into folk music, showing how widely it was accepted and distributed. This legend also inspired images in both traditions. In Romania the most striking illustrations are to be found in Bukovina province, in frescos on the famous painted churches of that region, as well as in manuscripts. In Armenia features of this story are incorporated into the iconography of the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan.

Armenian Philology in the Modern Era: From Manuscript to Digital Text (Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 8 Uralic & Central Asi) Valentina Calzolari; Michael E Stone; Association internationale des études arméniennes; Armenian Studies 2000 Project Koninklijke Brill N.V., Handbook of Oriental Studies. Section 8 Uralic and Central Asian Studies, 1, 2014
Philology is one of the most investigated fields of Armenian studies. At the end of the twentieth century, it was important to provide an overview of the main achievements and on the methodological approaches implemented in this field till now. This is the aim of the present publication. Part I focuses on the manuscripts, the inscriptions, and the printings. Its second section is devoted to the textual criticisms and the third section explores the interface between linguistics and philology. Case studies form the core of Part II. One chapter offers an overview on the 17th-19th centuries, and two articles are devoted to the conditions of the circulation of the literary production in the 20th century, both in Western and Eastern Armenian.

Ancient Judaism : new visions and views Michael E. Stone [Stone, Michael E.] William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, Grand Rapids, Mich, Michigan, 2011
"In Ancient Judaism: New Visions and Views Michael Stone examines a broad range of basic issues in the study of Second Temple Judaism and calls for a radical rethinking of approaches to Jewish history. Stone challenges scholars and students to question theologically conditioned histories of ancient Judaism devised by later orthodoxies, whether Jewish or Christian, and to acknowledge religious experience as a major factor in the composition and transmission of ancient religious documents. He urges readers to look above and beyond the spectacles of tradition and cultural memory that too often distort their understanding of the ancient past. Addressing an assortment of topics regarding the authorship, transmission, and interpretation of the canonical Hebrew Bible, the Dead Sea Scrolls, apocryphal and pseudepigraphic literature, and more, Stone's Ancient Judaism underscores the stunning complexity of both the raw data and the resulting picture of Judaism in antiquity."--Publisher description

zlib/History/Ancient History/Michael E. Stone; Aram Topchyan;/Jews in Ancient and Medieval Armenia_23720027.fb2
Jews in ancient and medieval Armenia : first century BCE to fourteenth century CE Michael E. Stone; Stone; Aram Topchyan OUP Premium, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford, 2022
The much-debated identification of the "Mountains of Ararat" of Noah's Ark fame as well as ancient biblical and other references to Ararat and the Caucasus are re-assessed, and new evidence is adduced that challenges the scientific consensus.

A Right to Housing : Foundation for a New Social Agenda edited by Rachel G. Bratt, Michael E. Stone, and Chester Hartman Philadelphia, PA: Temple University Press, Temple University Press, Philadelphia, PA, 2006
Annotation In the 1949 Housing Act, Congress declared "a decent home and a suitable living environment for every American family" our national housing goal. Today, little more than half a century later, upwards of 100 million people in the United States live in housing that is physically inadequate, unsafe, overcrowded, or unaffordable. The contributors to A Right to Housing consider the key issues related to America's housing crisis, including income inequality and insecurity, segregation and discrimination, the rights of the elderly, as well as legislative and judicial responses to homelessness. The book offers a detailed examination of how access to adequate housing is directly related to economic security. With essays by leading activists and scholars, this book presents a powerful and compelling analysis of the persistent inability of the U.S. to meet many of its citizens' housing needs, and a comprehensive proposal for progressive change

A Guide to Early Jewish Texts and Traditions in Christian Transmission Alexander Kulik (editor), Gabriele Boccaccini (editor), Lorenzo DiTommaso (editor), David Hamidovic (editor), Michael E. Stone (editor) Oxford University Press, Incorporated; Oxford University Press, Oxford University Press USA, New York, NY, 2019
"The Jewish culture of the Hellenistic and early Roman periods established a basis for all monotheistic religions but its main sources have been preserved to a great degree through Christian transmission. This Guide is devoted to problems of preservation, reception, and transformation of Jewish texts and traditions of the Second Temple period in the many Christian milieus from the ancient world to the late medieval era. It approaches this corpus not as an artificial collection of reconstructed texts--a body of hypothetical originals--but rather from the perspective of the preserved materials, examined in their religious, social, and political contexts. It also considers the other, non-Christian, channels of the survival of early Jewish materials, including rabbinic, Gnostic, Manichaean, and Islamic. This unique project brings together scholars from many different fields in order to map the trajectories of early Jewish texts and traditions among diverse later cultures. It also provides a comprehensive and comparative introduction to this new field of study while bridging the gap between scholars of early Judaism and of medieval Christianity" -- University Press Scholarship Online

The Literature of the Jewish People in the Period of the Second Temple and the Talmud, Volume 3: The Literature of the Sages : Second Part: Midrash and Targum; Liturgy, Poetry, Mysticism; Contracts, Inscriptions, Ancient Science; and the Languages of Rabbinic Literature Shmuel Safrai z”l; Ze'ev Safrai; Joshua J. Schwartz; Peter Tomson Van Gorcum; Fortress Press; Brill Academic Pub, Brill Academic Publishers, Leiden, 2006
This long-awaited companion volume to The Literature of the Sages , First Part (Fortress Press, 1987) brings to completion Section II of the renowned Compendia series. The Literature of the Sages, Second Part, explores the literary creation of thousands of ancient Jewish teachers, the often- anonymous Sages of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Essays by premier scholars provide a careful and succinct analysis of the content and character of various documents, their textual and literary forms, with particular attention to the ongoing discovery and publication of new textual material. Incorporating groundbreaking developments in research, these essays give a comprehensive presentation published here for the first time. This volume will prove an important reference work for all students of ancient Judaism, the origins of Jewish tradition, and the Jewish background of Christianity. The literary creation of the ancient Jewish teachers or Sages - also called rabbinic literature - consists of the teachings of thousands of Sages, many of them anonymous. For a long period, their teachings existed orally, which implied a great deal of flexibility in arrangement and form. Only gradually, as parts of this amorphous oral tradition became fixed, was the literature written down, a process that began in the third century C.E. and continued into the Middle Ages. Thus the documents of rabbinic literature are the result of a remarkably long and complex process of creation and editing. This long-awaited companion volume to 'The Literature of the Sages, First Part' (1987) gives a careful and succinct analysis both of the content and specific nature of the various documents, and of their textual and literary forms, paying special attention to the continuing discovery and publication of new textual material. Incorporating ground-breaking developments in research, these essays give a comprehensive presentation published here for the first time. 'The Literature of the Sages, Second Part' is an important reference work for all students of ancient Judaism, as well as for those interested in the origins of Jewish tradition and the Jewish background of Christianity

nexusstc/Adamgirk` : The Adam Book of Arak`el of Siwnik`/3ea02395a66f5864c366b390b26b89a6.pdf
Adamgirkʻ : the Adam book of Aṙakʻel of Siwnikʻ Michael E. Stone; Arak'el of Siwn Staff Oxford University Press, Incorporated, Oxford University Press USA, London, 2007
This is the first English translation of the major Armenian epic on Adam and Eve composed by Arak'el of Siwnik' in the early fifteenth century. Arak'el writes extremely powerful narrative poetry, as in his description of the brilliance of paradise, of Satan's mustering his hosts against Adam and Eve, and Eve's inner struggle between obedience to God and Satan's seduction. In parts the epic is in dialogue form between Adam, Eve, and God. It also pays much attention to the typology of Adam and Christ, or Adam's sin and death and Christ's crucifixion. By implication, this story, from an Eastern Christian tradition, is the story of all humans, and bears comparison with later biblical epics, such as Milton's Paradise Lost. Michael E. Stone's version preserves a balance between literary felicity and faithfulness to the original. His Introduction sets the work and its author in historical, religious, and literary context.

This volume of papers examines the attribution of books to figures in antiquity: Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Levi, Moses, Ezekiel, Daniel and others. The authors offer literary studies of these pseudepigraphical writings; assess the uses of pseudonymity and anonymity in the Dead Sea Scrolls and rabbinic literature; and explore the theological, social and historical implications of the different attributions and approaches. The consequences of assigning the origins of evil to humans (Adam and Eve) or to demons (the generations of Enoch and Noah) and the significance of each author's choice of pseudepigraphical pseudonym for identifying his social context are among the issues addressed.

The Cheirograph of Adam in Armenian and Romanian Traditions: New Texts and Images Michael E. Stone, Emanuela Timotin Brepols Publishers, Eastern Christian Cultures in Contact, 1, 1, 2023

Ancient Judaism : new visions and views Michael E. Stone William B.

Explore pilgrimage routes, epigraphy, and the history of writing with an expert guide From the late 1970s through 1982, Michael E. Stone conducted a number of expeditions to the Sinai peninsula, searching for ancient inscriptions. In this book Stone describes his search, crowned by the discovery of the most ancient Armenian inscriptions known. Here Stone describes not only the inscriptions discovered along his journeys but also the Sinai, its past and present, its human inhabitants, its flora and fauna, and its history. Though once common, well-informed travel books to the Middle East with a broad academic interest and a specific focus have become rare. Stone's diary of his expeditions in the Sinai fill this gap with vivid descriptions, poetry, and illustrations. Jews in ancient and medieval Armenia : first century BCE to fourteenth century CE Michael E. Stone; Stone; Aram Topchyan IRL Press at Oxford University Press, Jun 17, 2022
The much-debated identification of the "Mountains of Ararat" of Noah's Ark fame as well as ancient biblical and other references to Ararat and the Caucasus are re-assessed, and new evidence is adduced that challenges the scientific consensus. It responds both to new archeological discoveries in Armenia and to the growing interest in the history of the region that extends north from the Euphrates and into the Caucasus.

nexusstc/Adam and Eve in the Armenian Traditions, Fifth Through Seventeenth Centuries/941036fcb2a91350f21ae16a8b7d46c9.pdf
Adam and Eve in the Armenian traditions : fifth through seventeenth centuries Michael E. Stone Society of Biblical Literature, SBL Early Judaism and Its Literature 38, 2013
The Adam and Eve stories are a foundational myth in the Jewish and Christian worlds, and the way they were recounted reveals a great deal about those doing the retelling. How did the Armenians retell these stories? What values do these retellings express about men and women, their life in the world, sin and redemption? Presented here are twelve hundred years of Armenian telling of the Genesis 1 3 stories in an unparalleled collection of all significant narratives of Adam and Eve in Armenian literature prose and poetry, homilies and commentaries, calendary and mathematical texts from its inception in the fifth century to the seventeenth century. This seminal resource contributes to the lively current discussion of how biblical and apocryphal traditions were retold, embroidered, and transformed into the lenses through which the Bible itself was read.

nexusstc/Jewish Writings of the Second Temple Period (Compendia Rerum Iudaicarum Ad Novum Testamentum)/8cb312b6a2f592675306219384dcf5d6.pdf
Jewish Writings of the Second Temple Period (Compendia Rerum Iudaicarum Ad Novum Testamentum) Michael E Stone; Stichting Compendia Rerum Iudaicarum ad Novum Testamentum (Amsterdam, Netherlands) Augsburg Fortress Publishers, First English, 1984
This volume describes that part of the rich literary production of ancient Judaism which was not contained in the Hebrew Bible nor in rabbinic literature. These writings originated in the Second Temple period, which proved highly creative in the midst of strong external influences and internal movements.Prime example are the Dead Sea Scrolls, documents of an extremely separatist sect. Their discovery in 1947 revolutionized our understanding of Second Temple Judaism and its literature. The scrolls appear more or less related in spirit to a group of writings trasmitted by Christianity and known as the Pseudepigrapha. Yet another group are the Apocrypha, closely related to later biblical writings and incorporated within the Greek Old Testament. Finally, the encounter with Greek culture is documented by Jewish authors writing in Greek, notably Philo and Josephus. After a historical outline which sets the stage, the chapters of this book describe and analyse these documents. Selective bibliographies for further reading conclude the chapters.

A Right to Housing : Foundation for a New Social Agenda Bratt, Rachel G.;Ebrary, Inc.;Stone, Michael E.;Hartman, Chester W Temple University Press, Temple University Press, Philadelphia, PA, 2006
