Units In Mandarin Conversation: Prosody, Discourse, And Grammar (studies In Discourse And Grammar) Tao, Hongyin. John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 1996
This book provides a new way of studying grammar. The basic thrust of the book is to investigate grammar based on a prosodic unit, the intonation unit (IU), in spontaneous speech. The author challenges the dominant practice in the study of syntax, which has been to focus on the unit of the artificially constructed sentence. The book shows that some basic notions developed from sentence-level data often do not account well for speech data. For example, in many versions of syntactic theory, the basic syntactic structure of any sentence is assumed to comprise both an NP and a VP (with variations in terminology). However the author shows that a Mandarin sentence in spoken discourse can consist of a lone NP or a transitive verbal expression without any explicit argument (which is not due to anaphora). Although the book concerns Mandarin discourse and grammar, it will be of interest to students of a wide range of fields, including discourse analysis, syntax, conversation analysis, prosodic studies, and typological studies.

Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese (Studies in Written Language and Literacy) TAYLOR, Insup and Martin M. TAYLOR John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 1995
'Chinese, Japanese, South (and North) Koreans in East Asia have a long, intertwined and distinguished cultural history and have achieved, or are in the process of achieving, spectacular economic success. Together, these three peoples make up one quarter of the world population. They use a variety of unique and fascinating writing systems: logographic Chinese characters of ancient origin, as well as phonetic systems of syllabaries and alphabets. The book describes, often in comparison with English, how the Chinese, Korean and Japanese writing systems originated and developed; how each relates to its spoken language; how it is learned or taught; how it can be computerized; and how it relates to the past and present literacy, education, and culture of its users. Intimately familiar with the three East Asian cultures, Insup Taylor with the assistance of Martin Taylor, has written an accessible and highly readable book. Writing and Literacy in Chinese, Korean and Japanese is intended for academic readers (students in East Asian Studies, linguistics, education, psychology) as well as for the general public (parents, business, government). Readers of the book will learn about the interrelated cultural histories of China, Korea and Japan, but mainly about the various writing systems, some exotic, some familar, some simple, some complex, but all fascinating.'

lgli/Persuasion in Specialized Discourse - A Multidisciplinary Perspective.pdf
Persuasion in Specialized Discourse: A Multidisciplinary Perspective (Argumentation in Context, 22) Chiara Degano (editor), Dora Renna (editor), Francesca Santulli (editor) John Benjamins Pub Co, 2024
The volume aims to advance understanding of argumentative practices in different communicative contexts, with special regard for those with heightened public resonance: politics, media, and public debate in general. Furthermore, it intends to explore the linguistic aspects of argumentation, including both explicit codification, with the related issue of indicators, and the activation of implicit meanings. Bringing together different paradigms to account for the relations between contextual factors and discourse realizations, the contributions articulate around three foci, placing emphasis on one or more of them: the communicative purpose within a given genre or activity type; the argumentative and linguistic features of the investigated discourses, among which prototypical patterns, argumentative styles, and implicit meanings; the assessment of argumentation quality and strategies to cope with illegitimate practices.

lgli/Proverbs within Cognitive Linguistics.pdf
Proverbs Within Cognitive Linguistics: State of the Art Sadia Belkhir (editor) John Benjamins, Cognitive Linguistic Studies in Cultural Contexts; 16, 2024
The volume presents an innovative set of researches featuring theoretical and practical discussions of the proverb in cognition and culture. To date, there seems to be a need for state-of-the-art research into this subject matter. This volume aims at responding to this need. The chapters contribute, from a Cognitive Linguistics interdisciplinary perspective, to the existing body of literature on the proverb. The book begins with a first part containing three chapters concerned with theoretical discussions of proverbs in cognition and culture. The three chapters in the second part ponder proverbs within a cognitive-cross-cultural perspective. The third part of the volume includes three chapters that deal with the proverbs of individual languages and cultures. The three chapters in the fourth part study proverbs and/or related phenomena from a cognitive and cultural perspective: snowclones, idioms, and proverbial phrases. This book will be of interest to academics interested in proverbs within a cognitive linguistic framework and to scholars in the areas of language studies, applied linguistics, language teaching and learning, and Cognitive Linguistics in general, and to those researchers who wish to refine their knowledge about the cognitive activities featuring proverb use and their interaction with sociocultural contextual variables.

lgli/Individual Differences and Task-Based Language Teaching (Task-based Language Teaching) [3917914].pdf
Individual Differences and Task-based Language Teaching (Task-based Language Teaching, 16) Shaofeng Li (editor) John Benjamins Pub Co, 2024
This volume consists of a collection of empirical studies and research syntheses investigating the role of individual difference (ID) variables in task-based language teaching (TBLT)—a pedagogical approach that emphasizes the importance of the performance of meaning-oriented tasks in facilitating second language learning. TBLT is subject to learner-external as well as learner-internal factors, with the former referring to task- and context-related factors, and the latter to ID factors pertaining to learner traits, dispositions, or propensities. To date, the research has focused primarily on learner-external factors, and there has been insufficient and unsystematic research on individual difference factors. This volume brings centre stage this important but under-researched dimension by means of a comprehensive, in-depth examination of the role of key ID factors in TBLT. The volume integrates theory, research, and pedagogy by spelling out the mechanism through which IDs influence learning attainment, behaviours, and processes, examining evidence for theoretical claims, and discussing ways to apply research findings and cater to individual differences in the task-based classroom.

lgli/Space, Time, World (Human Cognitive Processing Series) [3775970].pdf
Space, Time, World (Human Cognitive Processing, 77) Michael Fortescue John Benjamins Pub Co, 2024
Although major cognitively based studies of SPACE and TIME in language have appeared in terms of “Frames of Reference”, these do not extend to a wide selection of the world’s languages, nor do they combine SPACE and TIME in the overarching concept of WORLD, which has its own corresponding frames of reference. The aim of relating and unifying these concepts and their expression across languages constitutes the unique thrust of the present book, which will represent a significant extension of earlier approaches. Among its main conclusions will be that the complete separation of terms for SPACE and TIME is a relatively recent cultural phenomenon, rather than just a metaphorical extension of the latter from the former. The book will be of interest to all students and practitioners of Linguistics, in particular Cognitive Linguistics and Linguistic typology, but also to a more general readership interested in the historical evolution of concepts of SPACE and TIME.

lgli/Vagueness, Ambiguity, and All the Rest - Linguistic and Pragmatic Approaches.pdf
Vagueness, Ambiguity, and All the Rest: Linguistic and Pragmatic Approaches (Pragmatics & Beyond New Series, 347) Ilaria Fiorentini (editor), Chiara Zanchi (editor) John Benjamins Pub Co, 1992
This book aims to address a gap in the existing literature on the relationship between vagueness and ambiguity, as well as on their differences and similarities, both in synchrony and diachrony, and taking into consideration their relation to language use. The book is divided into two parts, which address specific and broader research questions from different perspectives. The former part examines the differences between ambiguity and vagueness from a bird-eye perspective, with a particular focus on their respective functions and roles in language change. It also presents innovative linguistic resources and tools for the study of these phenomena. The second part contains case studies on vagueness and ambiguity in language change and use. It considers different strategies and languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Medieval Latin, and Old Italian. The readership for this volume is broad, encompassing scholars in a range of disciplines, including pragmatics, spoken discourse, conversation analysis, discourse genres (political, commercial, notarial discourse), corpus studies, language change, pragmaticalization, and language typology.

zlib/Linguistics/Linguistics/Jonas Freiwald/Theme in English and German_28498287.pdf
Theme in English and German: A Corpus-Based Contrastive Analysis of Clause Openings in Original and Translated Texts Jonas Freiwald John Benjamins Publishing Company, Studies in Corpus Linguistics No. 112, 112, 2023
This book represents a detailed discussion and corpus analysis of Theme in English and German originals and translations. The empirical results are based on thousands of clauses from four different registers, cover a variety of linguistic aspects including multiple Themes, marked Themes, participant roles, agency, and identifiability, and are tested statistically using regression analyses. The book sheds light on one of the most elusive concepts of the systemic functional linguistics framework, Theme, by comparing it with different approaches, related concepts, and realizations in different languages and by examining empirically different Theme models, contrastive differences, and translation effects. Given that Theme in English and German is realized formally by being the first clause constituent and is thus, effectively, a syntactic phenomenon, this monograph is not only relevant for functional linguists, but any interested in English and German word order differences and their effects on translations.

lgli/Self- and Other-Reference in Social Contexts - From Global to Local Discourses.pdf
Self- and Other-Reference in Social Contexts: From global to local discourses (Pragmatics & Beyond New Series) Minna Nevala (editor), Minna Palander-Collin (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, PT, 2024
The chapters in this volume study the construction, representation and negotiation of a variety of social roles through self- and other-reference markers or the discussion of reference as a tool for identification. The chapters uncover new insights both from a historical and present-day perspective and show how positioning the self and other varies, what kind of reference choices language users make and what follows from these choices. The data come from a variety of public texts, private encounters and questionnaires, and the methodologies range from macro to micro perspectives, including combinations of qualitative close-reading and quantitative corpus methods, and synchronic and diachronic perspectives. The findings enhance our understanding and use of reference practices in the context of global, institutional, political and multicultural, as well as media texts.

lgli/The Boundary between Grammar and Lexicon - Evidence from Japanese verb morphology.pdf
The Boundary between Grammar and Lexicon - Evidence from Japanese verb morphology Brent de Chene John Benjamins Publishing Company, Current Issues in Linguistic Theory; 368, 2025
All linguists recognize that competence in a natural language involves knowledge of a lexicon or dictionary; most assume that it also involves knowledge of a grammatical system. Just where the boundary between the lexicon and the grammar lies, however, is a question on which there is little consensus. This problem arises in particular with regard to the field of morphology, with many morphologists taking all morpheme combinations to result from the operation of the syntactic computational system and many others assuming that morphological units like stems and words are either lexically listed or created by nonsyntactic means. The present study, using Japanese and Ryukyuan verbal morphology as its primary database, argues that evidence from the syntactic branch of the grammar and evidence from the phonological branch of the grammar converge on the conclusion that, while inflectional morphology is fully syntactic, derivational morphology has properties that militate against a syntactic treatment. The boundary between grammar and lexicon, then, falls at the boundary between inflection and derivation, rendering morphology “split” between syntactic and nonsyntactic subparts. The book should be of interest not only to morphologists, but to all concerned with the distinction between grammatical and lexical competence.

zlib/Linguistics/Linguistics/Gerard J. Steen/Slowing Metaphor Down Elaborating Deliberate Metaphor Theory_93507911.pdf
Slowing metaphor down : elaborating deliberate metaphor theory Gerard J. Steen John Benjamins Publishing Company, Converging evidence in language and communication research, volume 26, Amsterdam, 2023
If thinking can be fast or slow, metaphorical thinking can be fast and slow too. But metaphorical thinking does not occur as often and in the ways that many metaphor scholars today think. Slow metaphorical thinking does mean, however, that we can exert more control over metaphor than has previously been acknowledged. We can even offer resistance to metaphor.Deliberate Metaphor Theory (DMT) claims that there is an essential processing difference between non-deliberate and deliberate metaphor use which can explain all this. This book is the first full account of the DMT model for metaphor comprehension. It presents explicit conceptualization and formal operationalization, and is based on a well-known cognitive-psychological model for all utterance comprehension in discourse. The original three-dimensional model of DMT is here refined into a four-dimensional model, which reveals new research questions and discoveries about the use of metaphor. The book brings together numerous cognitive-scientific insights into metaphor. It has a high degree of interdisciplinary accessibility to all students of metaphor, whether master students, PhDs, post docs, or established academics.

Innovation in language learning and teaching : historical perspectives Richard Smith (editor), Tim Giesler (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, AILA applied linguistics series, volume 20, Amsterdam, 2023
"By adopting a historical perspective, this edited collection of papers takes a fresh look at a key concept in applied linguistics, that of innovation. A substantial introduction advocates historical re-evaluation of this notion via exploration of its rise to prominence, while the ten subsequent chapters present in-depth case studies of apparently successful as well as ineffective innovation(s), from the early eighteenth to the late twentieth century. Language learning/teaching developments in Brazil, China, England, France, Germany and Italy are considered along with 'global' innovations in language learner lexicography, while the languages considered include Chinese, English, French, Italian, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish. Various types of primary source material are utilized, illustrating the possibilities of applied linguistic historiography for both students and academics new to the field. The book questions ideas of perpetual innovation and progress, supporting the adoption of more critical perspectives on change and innovation in applied linguistics and language teaching"-- Provided by publisher

lgli/The Reality of Women in the Universe of the Ancient Novel (IVITRA Research in Linguistics and Literature) [AN 3731626].pdf
The Reality of Women in the Universe of the Ancient Novel María Paz López Martínez (editor), Carlos Sánchez-Moreno Ellart (editor), Ana Belén Zaera García (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, IVITRA Research in Linguistics and Literature; 40, 2023
This volume gathers chapters related to the condition of women in the ancient novel. To broaden the perspective, it integrates not only papers dealing with the Greek and Roman novel as a literary genre in its own right, but also as a historical document involving aspects as diverse as history, archaeology, sociology and the history of law. The twenty-six contributions in this volume have been divided into thematic blocks, based on the different approaches that the authors have adopted to tackle the subject. The first block is about realia – the reality in which the fiction has been conceived. The second block focuses on the legal problems that can be deduced from the plots of the novels. The third block encompasses deals with the Greek and Roman novel from the point of view of classical philology, literary criticism and literary theory, with chapters dedicated to the tradition of the ancient novel, both in our most immediate cultural area (Middle Ages, Spanish Golden Age) and in other contexts, whether Indo-European (India, Persia) or of a different origin.

Social Media and Society : Integrating the digital with the social in digital discourse Majid KhosraviNik (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, Discourse approaches to politics, society and culture, volume 100, Amsterdam, 2023
"Social Media and Society brings together a range of scholars working at the intersection of discourse studies, digital media, and society. It is meant to respond to changes in discourse technologies, i.e. the techno-discursive dynamic of social media discourses. The book critically engages with the digital dynamics of representations around discourses of identity, politics, and culture. Other than its topical focus on highly pertinent discourses, the book aspires to offer some fresh insights into the theory, methods, and implementation of CDS in digital environments. The book can be viewed as part of the developing research framework of Social Media Critical Discourse Studies which seeks to integrate the impact of new mediation technologies on discursive meaning-making with its critical contextualisation. In addition to its strongly global outlook, the book incorporates a wide range of research perspectives including CDA, sociolinguistics, political discourse studies, media and technology, discourse theory, popular culture, feminism etc"-- Provided by publisher

Television Dialogue: The Sitcom Friends Vs. Natural Conversation (Studies in Corpus Linguistics) Quaglio, Paulo Benjamins Publishing Company, John; John Benjamins Publishing Company, Studies in corpus linguistics, Amsterdam, 2009
"This book explores a virtually untapped, yet fascinating research area: television dialogue. It reports on a study comparing the language of the American situation comedy Friends to natural conversation. Transcripts of the television show and the American English conversation portion of the Longman Grammar Corpus provide the data for this corpus-based investigation, which combines Douglas Biber's multidimensional methodology with a frequency-based analysis of close to 100 linguistic features. As a natural offshoot of the research design, this study offers a comprehensive description of the most common linguistic features characterizing natural conversation. Illustrated with numerous dialogue extracts from Friends and conversation, topics such as vague, emotional, and informal language are discussed. This book will be an important resource not only for researchers and students specializing in discourse analysis, register variation, and corpus linguistics, but also anyone interested in conversational language and television dialogue."--Jacket.

lgli/Translation Practice in the Field - Current research on socio-cognitive processes.pdf
Translation Practice in the Field : Current Research on Socio-cognitive Processes Hanna Risku (editor), Regina Rogl (editor), Jelena Milosevic (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, Benjamins current topics, Amsterdam, 2019
This volume presents recent research that follows translators, interpreters and translation project managers into their various work contexts and environments. It extends the scope of analysis of translation research from individuals and texts to collectives in their social and material worlds. Particular attention is paid to current translation and interpreting practice, the genesis of translations, the handling and completion of translation projects in real workplaces and the factors that shape these translation/interpreting situations. Covering fields as diverse as technical and literary translation, transcreation and church interpreting, the chapters show just how varied translation and interpreting processes and workplaces can prove to be. They provide new insights into the effects of the increasing use of technology in the translation workplace and the manifold requirements placed on translators and interpreters in a heterogeneous and fast-changing field of practice. Originally published as special issue of Translation Spaces 6:1 (2017).

Style and Reader Response : Minds, Media, Methods Alice Bell (editor), Sam Browse (editor), Alison Gibbons (editor), David Peplow (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, Linguistic Approaches to Literature; 36, 2021
"Style and Reader Response: Minds, media, methods profiles the diversity of theoretical and methodological approaches in reception-oriented research in stylistics. Collectively, the chapters investigate how real readers, players, audiences, and viewers respond to, experience, and interpret texts. Contributions to the book investigate discourse types such as contemporary literature, poetry, political speeches, digital fiction, art exhibitions, and online news discourse. The volume also exemplifies the variety of empirical approaches in reception research, with contributors drawing on a range of methods including discussion groups, interviews, questionnaires, and think-aloud protocols with data analysed from both online and offline sources. Style and Reader Response makes an important contribution to an emerging paradigm within stylistics in which verifiable insights from readers are used to generate new models and new understandings of texts across media, with each essay demonstrating the centrality of empirical research for theoretical, methodological, and/or analytical advancements within and beyond stylistics"-- Provided by publisher

lgli/Research Methods in the Study of L2 Writing Processes.pdf
Research Methods in the Study of L2 Writing Processes Rosa M. Manchón (editor), Julio Roca De Larios (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, Research Methods in Applied Linguistics; 5, 2023
This volume brings together the perspectives of new and established scholars who have connected with the broad fields of first language (L1) and second language (L2) writing to discuss critically key methodological developments and challenges in the study of L2 writing processes. The focus is on studies of composing and of engagement with feedback on written drafts, with particular attention to methods of process-tracing through data such as concurrent or stimulated verbal reports, interviews, diaries, digital recording, visual screen capture, eye tracking, keystroke logging, questionnaires, and/or ethnographic observation. The chapters in the book illustrate how progress has been made in developing research methods and empirical understandings of writing processes, in introducing methodological innovations, and in pointing to future methodological directions. It will be an essential methodological guide for novice and experienced researchers, senior students, and educators investigating the processes of writing in additional languages.

Discourse Phenomena in Typological Perspective (Studies in Language Companion Series (SLCS), 227) Alessandra Barotto (editor), Simone Mattiola (editor) Benjamins Publishing Company, John, Studies in language <Amsterdam> / Companion series, Amsterdam, 2023
"This book aims at investigating discourse phenomena (i.e., linguistic elements and constructions that help to manage the organization, flow, and outcome of communication) from a typological and cross-linguistic perspective. Although it is a well-established idea in functional-typological approaches that grammar is shaped by discourse use, systematic typological cross-linguistic investigations on discourse phenomena are relatively rare. This volume aims at bridging this gap, by integrating different linguistic subfields, such as discourse analysis, pragmatics, and typology. The contributions, both theoretically and empirically oriented, focus on a broad variety of discourse phenomena (ranging from discourse markers to discourse function of grammatical markers, to strategies that manage the discourse and information flow) while adopting a typological perspective and considering typologically distant languages"-- Provided by publisher

Exploring Language and Society with Big Data : Parliamentary discourse across time and space Minna Korhonen, Haidee Kotze, Jukka Tyrkkö John Benjamins Publishing Company, Studies in Corpus Linguistics No. 111, 111, 2023
As the legislative bodies of democratic nations, parliaments play a fundamental role in society. Consequently the linguistic practices observed in parliamentary discourse are of importance to everyone. This volume brings together leading researchers in areas of corpus linguistics, big data, parliamentary discourse, and historical linguistics in a truly interdisciplinary exploration at the vanguard of big data and corpus methods with the aim to investigate the intersection between linguistic and social change. Making use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, the studies included in this volume range from a focus on explicitly linguistic phenomena to topics that contribute to our understanding of language and society more generally. It breaks new ground in its critical reflection on the conceptual and methodological challenges of using large corpora of parliamentary discourse to study both the specialised language of parliamentary speech and the societies that the parliaments in question represent and govern.

New Englishes, New Methods G68 Guyanne Wilson (editor), Michael Westphal (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, Varieties of English Around the World, 1, 2023
"There is an ever-growing body of work on New Englishes, and the time has come to take stock of how research on varieties of English is carried out. The contributions in this volume critically explore the gamut of familiar and unfamiliar methods applied in data collection and analysis in order to improve upon old methods and develop new methods for the study of English around the world. The authors present novel approaches to the use of the International Corpus of English, critical insights into phonological analyses of New Englishes, applications of linguistic dialectology in territories in which New Englishes are used, improvements on attitudinal research, and an array of mixed-methods approaches. The contributions in this volume also include a range of Englishes, considered not only in situ but also in online and diaspora settings, and thus question received understandings of what counts as New Englishes"-- Provided by publisher

lgli/Constructions in Spanish (Constructional Approaches to Language Series) [3672105].pdf
Constructions in Spanish (Constructional Approaches to Language, 34) Inga Hennecke; Evelyn Wiesinger Benjamins Publishing Company, John, Amsterdam/Philadelphia, 2023
Constructions in Spanish is the first book-length English-language volume in the field of usage-based and Cognitive Construction Grammar dedicated exclusively to Spanish. The contributions investigate a wide range of constructions from both a synchronic and a diachronic perspective, cutting across morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. The constructionist perspective is also linked to comparative and typological research, to (foreign) language acquisition and to multi-modal discourse analysis. The volume aims both at increasing the visibility of constructionist approaches to Spanish, and at offering data and analyses of Spanish for scholars working on constructional analyses of other languages. The volume thus addresses both scholars in Spanish and Romance linguistics, as it builds connections between more traditional approaches and constructionist approaches, and construction grammarians generally, especially scholars interested in comparative work.

Palenquero and Spanish in Contact : Exploring the Interface John M. Lipski Amsterdam ; Philadelphia: John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2020
1 online resource (xi, 318 pages) "Bilingual speakers are normally aware of what language they are speaking or hearing; there is, however, no widely accepted consensus on the degree of lexical and morphosyntactic similarity that defines the psycholinguistic threshold of distinct languages. This book focuses on the Afro-Colombian creole language Palenquero, spoken in bilingual contact with its historical lexifier, Spanish. Although sharing largely cognate lexicons, the languages are in general not mutually intelligible. For example, Palenquero exhibits no adjective-noun or verb-subject agreement, uses pre-verbal tense-mood-aspect particles, and exhibits unbounded clause-final negation. The present study represents a first attempt at mapping the psycholinguistic boundaries between Spanish and Palenquero from the speakers' own perspective, including traditional native Palenquero speakers, adult heritage speakers, and young native Spanish speakers who are acquiring Palenquero as a second language. The latter group also provides insights into the possible cognitive cost of "de-activating" Spanish morphological agreement as well as the relative efficiency of pre-verbal vs. clause-final negation. In this study, corpus-based analyses are combined with an array of interactive experimental techniques, demonstrating that externally-imposed classifications do not always correspond to speakers' own partitioning of language usage in their communities"-- Includes bibliographical references and index Introduction -- 1. lgli/Instructed Second Language Acquisition Research Methods.pdf
Instructed Second Language Acquisition Research Methods Laura Gurzynski-Weiss (editor), Youjin Kim (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, Research methods in applied linguistics, volume 3, Amsterdam, 2022
Written for novice and established scholars alike, Instructed Second Language Acquisition Research Methods is a stand-alone research methods guide from an Instructed Second Language Acquisition (ISLA) lens. After offering foundations of conducting ISLA research, the subsequent chapters are organized by four skill areas (listening, speaking, reading, writing) and four major linguistic features (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, pragmatics). In each chapter, authors define the target sub-domain of ISLA, outline the basics of research design, provide concrete guidance on crafting robust research questions, identifying appropriate methodology and method(s), adapting an existing instrument or creating your own, carrying out a study, analyzing and interpreting data, and determining how/where/when to share your work. The volume also dedicates chapters to addressing common inquiries of conducting ISLA research (e.g., obtaining ethics permission, recruiting your own students, working with small and heterogeneous sample sizes, accounting for individual differences), and to maximizing research impact beyond academia. Written by leading experts on each topic, this book is an essential resource for ISLA, SLA, and research methods scholars.

Where is Adaptation? (FILLM Studies in Languages and Literatures) Casie Hermansson (editor), Janet Zepernick (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2018
"Where is Adaptation? Mapping cultures, texts, and contexts explores the vast terrain of contemporary adaptation studies and offers a wide variety of answers to the title question in 24 chapters by 29 international practitioners and scholars of adaptation, both eminent and emerging. From insightful self-analyses by practitioners (a novelist, a film director, a comics artist) to analyses of adaptations of place, culture, and identity, the authors brought together in this collection represent a broad cross-section of current work in adaptation studies. From the development of technologies impacting film festivals, to the symbiotic potential of interweaving disability and adaptation studies, censorship, exploring the 'glocal, ' and an examination of the Association for Adaptation Studies at its 10th anniversary, the original contributions in this volume aim to trace the leading edges of this evolving field."--Back cover

Language Processing in Advanced Learners of English (Bilingual Processing and Acquisition) Marco Schilk John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Philadelphia, 2020
"The production and processing of collocations and formulaic language is a field of growing interest in corpus linguistics and experimental psycholinguistics. In the past this fascinating field at the interface of grammar and the lexicon has been mainly studied based on English native speakers, while research focusing on second language speakers and language learners has been comparatively rare. This book proposes an integration of corpus-based and experimental methods by analysing language processing of collocation by advanced learners of English. In using corpus-derived collocational stimuli of native-like and learner-typical language use in an experimental setting, it shows how advanced German L1 learners of English process native-like collocations, L1-based interferences and non-collocating lexical combinations. This book is of interest to anyone interested in the psycholinguistic validity of collocation from a bilingual point of view, as it explores methods of tracking collocational processing of speakers working with different sets of 'collocational preferences'"-- Proporcionat per l'editor

Granularity in the verbalization of events and objects : a cross-linguistic study Katerina Stathi John Benjamins Publishing Company, Studies in language companion series, volume 233, Amsterdam, 2023
"The study departs from the observation that in expressing ideas, some languages encode more details than others. It investigates whether languages encode events and/or objects at a coarse-grained (e.g., put, glass) as opposed to a fine-grained (e.g., lay, wine glass) level systematically. The level of detail is termed granularity, which is viewed as a cline from fine-grained (semantic specificity) to coarse-grained meaning (semantic generality). Four languages are investigated: German, English, Greek, and Turkish. The study draws on elicited data from a naming task. The verbalization of events is based on event and object descriptions in selected semantic domains. The results reveal significant granularity effects between languages and language types (satellite-framed vs. verb-framed). The study is relevant for scholars interested in linguistic typology, lexical and semantic typology, contrastive linguistics, event representation, psycholinguistics, and cognitive semantics"-- Provided by publisher

lgli/Language and Social Interaction at Home and School (Dialogue Studies) [3036485].pdf
Language and Social Interaction at Home and School (Dialogue Studies) Letizia Caronia (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Philadelphia, 2021
As Ragnar Rommetveit put it forty years ago, dialogue is “the architecture of intersubjectivity”: a tool not only for maintaining yet also constantly transforming our life-worlds. The volume advances and empirically illustrates the role of talk-in-interaction in displaying, ratifying, creating yet also defying the crucial dimensions of the world we live in. This process is particularly noticeable in children’s primary social worlds, i.e. home and school where they are socialized to becoming competent members of the communities they (will) live in. Drawing on fifty years of research on children's socialization through language and social interaction, the volume provides new multidisciplinary insights and updated empirical data on the process through which cultures, identities, and knowledge are brought into being through the everyday dialogues that animate children’s life at home and school. The volume addresses a specialized readership and its interdisciplinary framework ensures that it will be of great interest to scholars from different academic fields, such as social and developmental psychology, anthropology, education, developmental linguistics, sociolinguistics and developmental pragmatics.

lgli/Less Frequently Used Research Methodologies in Applied Linguistics.pdf
Less Frequently Used Research Methodologies in Applied Linguistics (Research Methods in Applied Linguistics, 6) A. Mehdi Riazi John Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam/Philadelphia, 2024
Research methodology plays a pivotal role in generating new knowledge in any academic discipline. Applied Linguistics (AL) researchers use a variety of research methodologies to address different research problems and research questions, given its interdisciplinary nature. Notwithstanding the plethora of research methodologies used by AL researchers, there are some methodologies that are used less frequently. The aim of this volume is to introduce and discuss these less frequently used methodologies. Each methodology is discussed in two chapters, a theoretical and a practical chapter. In the theoretical chapters, the theoretical foundations, methodological orientation, ethical issues, and critiques and responses are discussed. In the practical chapters, a showcase study is presented and discussed, including why the methodology was used, how it was implemented, the challenges the researchers faced, and the insights they gained. The volume contributes to the current methodological discussion in AL and provides early-career and seasoned researchers with the necessary discussion about these methodological orientations. Future AL researchers may use these methodologies to investigate research questions in their areas of interest. In addition, the volume can complement current methodological resources in postgraduate research methodology courses.

Visual Metaphors (Benjamins Current Topics) Réka Benczes (editor), Veronika Szelid (editor) John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2022
"Whenever we think about the world - including its concrete and abstract entities - we typically see a series of so-called mental images in front of our eyes that aid us in everyday problem solving and navigating ourselves in the world. Visual metaphors, similarly to their linguistic counterparts, largely build on such images. Nevertheless, the interplay of metaphorical/metonymical text and imagery is not necessarily (and not usually) straightforward and raises complex theoretical and methodological questions. The eleven chapters in this collection address a wide range of such challenges, such as what are visual metaphors in the first place; how can they be identified; what is their relationship to linguistic metaphors, what are their most common manifestations; what knowledge structures are required for their interpretation, and how do they interact with metonymies. The studies cut across linguistics, politics, philosophy, poetry, art and history - highlighting the ubiquitous role that visual metaphor plays in everyday life and conceptualizations. zlib/Linguistics/Linguistics/Paul Newman/Syllable Weight in African Languages_116765856.pdf
Syllable Weight in African Languages Paul Newman, Paul Newman John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2017
Syllable weight is a crucially important concept in the fields of phonology and morphology. It impacts analyses and explanation whether theoretical, typological, or descriptive. African linguistics was critical in the original development of the concept and, as this book demonstrates, the concept is critical to our understanding of complex phenomena in African languages, including stress, tone, allomorphy, minimal word requirements, and metrics. This volume includes a broad overview of syllable weight as a phonological variable and then provides detailed case studies covering an array of African languages from various phyla spoken across the continent. This should prove to be an essential book for scholars and students in the area of general phonology and African linguistics. The editor of the book, Distinguished Professor Paul Newman, is an internationally well-known expert on African linguistics in general and the Hausa language in particular. It was he who first introduced the term ‘syllable weight’ in a seminal article published nearly a half century ago.

Syntactic and Semantic Variation in Copular Sentences: Insights from Classical Hebrew (Linguistik Aktuell/Linguistics Today) Daniel J. Wilson John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2020
"This book presents a novel account of syntactic and semantic variation in copular and existential sentences in Classical Hebrew. Like many languages, the system of Classical Hebrew copular sentences is quite complex, containing zero, pronominal, and verbal forms as well as eventive and inchoative semantics. Approaching this subject from the framework of Distributed Morphology provides an elegant and comprehensive explanation for both the syntactic and semantic variation in these sentences. This book also presents a theoretical model for analyzing copular sentences in other languages included related phenomena- such as pseudo-copulas. It is also a demonstration of what can be gained by applying modern linguistic analyses to dead languages. Citing and building off previous studies on this topic, this book will be of interest to those interested in the theoretical examination of copular and existential sentences and to those interested in Classical Hebrew more specifically"-- Provided by publisher

zlib/no-category/Grzegorz Drożdż/Studies in Lexicogrammar: Theory and applications_119149883.pdf
Studies in Lexicogrammar : Theory and Applications Grzegorz Drożdż John Benjamins Publishing Company, Human Cognitive Processing (HCP), 54, 2016
The leitmotif, but not exclusive theme, of the present volume is Ronald Langacker's (1987) thesis that "lexicon, morphology, and syntax form a continuum of symbolic units serving to structure conceptual content for expressive purposes". The concept of the lexicogrammar continuum contrasts especially with mainstream generative grammar, but also, although less radically, with other cognitive linguistic paradigms, such as Construction Grammar. The contributors to this volume explore the lexicogrammar continuum and other issues of the architecture of language mostly from a cognitive linguistic perspective. A wide range of theoretical and methodological themes is covered such as the integration of discourse and interactional phenomena into Cognitive Grammar, the status of introspective data, figurative language and thought (i.e. metaphor and metonymy), morphosyntactic constructions, and phonological structure. Besides English (including Old English), languages analyzed in some detail include Polish, Czech, Dutch, Estonian, Georgian, German, Danish, and Portuguese. The volume will be of interest to scholars and graduate students in cognitive linguistics, especially Cognitive Grammar, Construction Grammar, metaphor and metonymy, and corpus linguistics.

lgli/Exploring Intensification Synchronic, Diachronic and Cross-linguistic Perspectives (Studies in Language Companion Ser) [AN 1609469].pdf
Exploring Intensification : Synchronic, Diachronic and Cross-linguistic Perspectives Maria Napoli; Miriam Ravetto John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2017
This book is the first collective volume specifically devoted to the multifaceted phenomenon of intensification, which has been traditionally regarded as related to the expression of degree, scaling a quality downwards or upwards. In spite of the large amount of studies on intensifiers, there is still a need for the characterization of intensification as a distinct functional category in the domain of modification. The eighteen papers of the volume contribute to this aim with a new approach (mainly corpus-based). They focus on intensification from different perspectives (both synchronic and diachronic) and theoretical frameworks, concern ancient languages (Hittite, Greek, Latin) and modern languages (mainly Italian, German, English, Kiswahili), and involve different levels of analysis. They also identify and examine different types of intensifiers, applied to different forms and structures, such as adverbs, adjectives, evaluative affixes, discourse markers, reduplication, exclamative clauses, coordination, prosodic elements, and shed light on issues which have not been extensively studied so far.

Negation, Expectation and Ideology in Written Texts (Linguistic Approaches to Literature) Lisa Nahajec John Benjamins Publishing Company, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2021
"During an election campaign in 2008, Ken Livingstone said to a newspaper reporter "this election is not a joke". By doing so, he introduced an expectation into the discourse that someone does, in fact, think it is a joke. This book explores how it is that saying what is not the case communicates something about what is. Bringing together a focus on text with cognitive and pragmatic approaches, a case is made for an application of linguistic negation as a tool of analysis. This tool is used to explore the ideological implications of projecting or reflecting readerly expectations. This book contributes to the growing field of Critical stylistics and aims to add to the range of stylistic insights which anchor the analysis of discourse to a consideration of the nuances of language choice"-- Provided by publisher

Syntactic Geolectal Variation : Traditional Approaches, Current Challenges and New Tools Alba Cerrudo (editor), Ángel J. Gallego (editor), Francesc Roca Urgell (editor) Issues in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics, Issues in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics; 34, 2021
"This volume brings together studies that combine both traditional and contemporary tools in the study of syntactic geolectal variation, with a special focus on a subset of Iberian varieties. There is an increasing body of research on syntactic micro-variation, but the interaction between dialectology (which makes use of atlases, corpora, databases, questionnaires, interviews, etc.) and formal syntactic studies has traditionally been weak (or even nonexistent), which is precisely the gap the contributions in this book aim at filling in. From a broader perspective, this collection is meant as a contribution to the subfield of linguistic variation and to the more general field of Romance linguistics, with special interest in Spanish and in other Iberian languages. The volume is meant for both researchers and students interested in linguistic variation or dialectology and, specifically, in syntactic variation in Iberian languages"-- Provided by publisher

Beyond Meaning Elly Ifantidou; Louis de Saussure; Tim Wharton Pragmatics & Beyond New Series, John Benjamins Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 2021
"Despite the fact that they are often crucial to our understanding, the vague, ineffable elements of language use and communication have received much less attention from linguists than the more concrete, effable ones. This has left a range of important questions unanswered. How might we account for the communication of non-propositional phenomena such as moods, emotions and impressions? What type of cognitive response do these phenomena trigger, if not conceptual or propositional? Do creative metaphors and unknown words in second languages and other 'pointers' to 'conceptual regions' communicate concepts learned from language alone? How might the descriptive ineffability of interjections, free indirect speech etc. be accommodated within a theory of communication? What of those working on the aesthetics of artworks, music and literature? What can evolution tell us about ineffability? The papers in this volume address these fascinating questions head-on. They represent a range of different attempts to answer them and, in so doing, allow us to pose exciting new questions. The aim, to bring the ineffable firmly within the grasp of theoretical pragmatics". Sommario fornito dall'editore

The Middle Voice in Baltic Axel Holvoet John Benjamins Publishing Company, Valency, Argument Realization and Grammatical Relations in Baltic, Valency, Argument Realization and Grammatical Relations in Baltic Ser., 1, 2020
The fifth volume in the VARGReB series is a monograph presenting a collection of studies on middle-voice grams in Baltic, that is, on a widely ramified family of constructions with different syntactic and semantic properties but sharing a morphological marker of reflexive origin. Though the emphasis is on Baltic, ample attention is given to other languages as well, especially to Slavonic. The book offers many new insights into questions of syntactic and semantic interpretation, correct demarcation and diachronic explanation of middle-voice grams. The relationship between reflexive and middle, the workings of metonymy, changes in syntactic structure and lexical input as factors determining diachronic shifts within the middle-voice domain and transitions from one middle-voice gram to another - these are among the topics discussed in the book, which, beyond its relevance to Baltic and Slavonic scholarship, is also a contribution to the typology of the middle voice.

Visual Metaphors (Benjamins Current Topics) Réka Benczes, Veronika Szelid John Benjamins Publishing Company, Benjamins Current Topics, Benjamins Current Topics, 2022
