<p>This book contributes to our understanding of how older learners negotiate family internal and family external socialisation processes and thereby how parents’ ideologies and practices, peer socialisation, and language status or societal demands come together in adolescents’ lives. It integrates the sociohistorical context and adolescents’ attitudes with the parents’ role. Through the use of ‘small stories’ and ethnographic observation this book explores the social and cultural worlds of Polish immigrant adolescents in Ireland, the ways they seek membership and belonging in their communities of practice, and the ways in which they develop sociohistorical understandings across the languages and cultures they are part of. It sheds light on schooling and family communities and the role they play in the socialization processes of immigrant children.</p>

The opening of the borders to Eastern Europe has expanded our view on European diversities and offered new opportunities to examine the effects of the heterogeneity in European cultural backgrounds and political systems on personality and social development. This book is a first step in utilizing the rich cultural resource offered by the large number of cultural units represented in Europe and--at least in part--in the United States. One way to understand the life conditions of adolescents in different countries is to study what they actually do in everyday life and how much time they spend on what types of activities. This book also provides essential and new information about individual and societal priorities and values. Toward this end, the "Euronet" scientists set up a postdoctoral training workshop on adolescent psychology for 10 selected American and 10 selected European participants. The Euronet project comprises 13 different samples--six stemming from Middle and Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, the Czechoslovakian Federal Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Romania), six from Western European countries (Finland, France, Germany, Norway, French, and German Switzerland), and one from the United States (Michigan). This book reports the results of this large, cross-national, longitudinal study of adolescents and the world(s) in which they live, and is offered to all those who have an interest in adolescence and/or the diversity of Europe. Readers will learn about hundreds of features of adolescence which are more or less characteristic of the cultures, ages, and genders.

How does one get used to friends, colleagues, and neighbors no longer being part of everyday life? How is moral, social, and legal order reinstated after one part of the community participated in the ethnic cleansing of another? How is order restored psychologically in the wake of neighbors watching others being slaughtered by external enemies? This book sheds light on how destroyed European communities, once multi-ethnic and multi-religious,  experienced  postwar reconstruction, attempted to  come to terms  with what had happened, and negotiated  remembrance . The opening of the borders to Eastern Europe has expanded our view on European diversities and offered new opportunities to examine the effects of the heterogeneity in European cultural backgrounds and political systems on personality and social development. This book is a first step in utilizing the rich cultural resource offered by the large number of cultural units represented in Europe and--at least in part--in the United States. One way to understand the life conditions of adolescents in different countries is to study what they actually do in everyday life and how much time they spend on what types of activities. This book also provides essential and new information about individual and societal priorities and values. Toward this end, the "Euronet" scientists set up a postdoctoral training workshop on adolescent psychology for 10 selected American and 10 selected European participants. The Euronet project comprises 13 different samples--six stemming from Middle and Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, the Czechoslovakian Federal Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Romania), six from Western European countries (Finland, France, Germany, Norway, French, and German Switzerland), and one from the United States (Michigan). This book reports the results of this large, cross-national, longitudinal study of adolescents and the world(s) in which they live, and is offered to all those who have an interest in adolescence and/or the diversity of Europe. Readers will learn about hundreds of features of adolescence which are more or less characteristic of the cultures, ages, and genders.

For over a millennium and a half, Egypt was home to at least two commonly used languages of communication. Although this situation is by no means exceptional in the ancient and medieval worlds, the wealth of documentary sources preserved by Egypt's papyri makes the country a privileged observation ground for the study of ancient multilingualism. One of the greatest contributions of papyri to this subject is that they capture more linguistic registers than other ancient and medieval sources, since they range from very private documents not meant by their author to be read by future generations, to official documents produced by the administration, which are preserved in their original form. This collection of essays aims to make this wealth better known, as well as to give a diachronic view of multilingual practices in Egypt from the arrival of the Greeks as a political force in the country with Alexander the Great, to the beginnings of Abbasid rule when Greek, and slowly also Coptic, receded from the documentary record. The first section of the book gives an overview of the documentary sources for this subject, which for ancient history standards are very rich and as yet under-exploited. The second part contains several case studies from different periods that deal with language use in contexts of varying breadth and scope, from its the ritual use in magic or the liturgy to private letters and state administration.

The opening of the borders to Eastern Europe has expanded our view on European diversities and offered new opportunities to examine the effects of the heterogeneity in European cultural backgrounds and political systems on personality and social development. This book is a first step in utilizing the rich cultural resource offered by the large number of cultural units represented in Europe and--at least in part--in the United States. One way to understand the life conditions of adolescents in different countries is to study what they actually do in everyday life and how much time they spend on what types of activities. This book also provides essential and new information about individual and societal priorities and values. Toward this end, the'Euronet'scientists set up a postdoctoral training workshop on adolescent psychology for 10 selected American and 10 selected European participants. The Euronet project comprises 13 different samples--six stemming from Middle and Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, the Czechoslovakian Federal Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, and Romania), six from Western European countries (Finland, France, Germany, Norway, French, and German Switzerland), and one from the United States (Michigan). This book reports the results of this large, cross-national, longitudinal study of adolescents and the world(s) in which they live, and is offered to all those who have an interest in adolescence and/or the diversity of Europe. Readers will learn about hundreds of features of adolescence which are more or less characteristic of the cultures, ages, and genders.

Wie kann die Mehrsprachigkeit der Kinder in den Alltag von Kitas einbezogen werden? Mehrsprachigkeit im Kontext der sprachlichen Bildung ist hierfür der Schlüssel. Die sprachlichen Fähigkeiten der Kinder mit Fluchterfahrung sind eine zentrale Ressource bei der Sprachbildungsarbeit in Kindertageseinrichtungen. Hierbei andere Sprachen einzubeziehen, stärkt die vorhandenen Fähigkeiten der Kinder und ermöglicht der Kindertageseinrichtung, sich kulturell und sprachlich für Neues zu öffnen. Auch im Kontext der Inklusion von Kindern mit Fluchterfahrung spielt sprachliche Bildung eine zentrale Rolle, als Kommunikationsmittel zwischen Menschen und als Zugang zur neuen Kultur. Matilde Heredia zeigt, wie die Berücksichtigung der Mehrsprachigkeit bei der sprachlichen Bildung gelingen kann und wie sie Wege für neue pädagogische Strukturen weisen kann, die den aktuellen gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen gerecht werden. AbstractThe explosive global spread ofSinadonta woodiana, a large‐bodied unionid mussel ofEast Asian origin, potentially affects the functioning of freshwater habitats andthreatens native mussels. Molecular data indicate that its invasion in Europe startedwith a single colonization event, followed by in situ adaptation. This study traces oneof the possible routes of such adaptation. It documents a population ofS. woodianawith a known history of a two‐stage introduction: first, from a heated water source toa production fish pond in northern Poland, and subsequently from that pond to thestudy site. As the latest local transfer occurred more than 15 years before the study,the abundance of youngS. woodianain various age classes provides proof of ongoingin situ reproduction and resolves the question of the ability ofS. woodianatopermanently colonize thermally unpolluted water bodies in areas with prolonged andcold winters. The study also shows that translocations of glochidia‐infested fish and/or adult mussels between water bodies in such areas result in the establishment ofnew self‐recruiting populations. Together, these findings show that further expansionofS. woodianainto colder regions and establishment of new populations in alreadyinvaded areas are to be expected. The relative abundance ofS. woodianaand thenative unionids:Anodonta anatinaandA. cygneawas 40%, 18%, and 42%, respectively.S. woodianacontributed to 65% of the total mussel biomass. Individuals in thefirst three size classes, corresponding to the 2‐to 4 year age classes, composed 50%ofS. woodiana, 37% ofA. anatina, and 26% ofA. cygnea.
