Robb and Gill expose contention and disorganization among non-communist allies in the early phase of containment strategy in Asia-Pacific. In particular, the authors note the significance of economic, racial, and cultural elements to planning for regional security and they highlight how these domestic matters resulted in international disorganization. Divided Allies shows that, amidst these contentious relations, the antipodean powers Australia and New Zealand occupied an important role in the region and successfully utilized quadrilateral diplomacy to advance their own national interests, such as the crafting of the 1951 ANZUS collective security treaty. As fractious as were allied relations in the early days of NATO, Robb and Gill demonstrate that the post-World War II Asia-Pacific was as contentious, and that Britain and the commonwealth nations were necessary partners in the development of early global Cold War strategy.

Annotation Education is often seen as a fundamental means to improve economic prospects for individuals from low income settings. However, even with increased emphasis on basic education for all, many individuals fail to achieve basic skills to succeed in life. The book presents evidence that one core reason is that by the time a child is old enough to attend school, there is already a wide disparity in cognitive skills and in emotional and behavioral development among children from households of different socioeconomic backgrounds. Low levels of cognitive development in early childhood strongly correlate with low socio-economic status (as measured by wealth and parental education) as well as malnutrition. These disadvantages are often exacerbated by economic crises. Fortunately, however, as documented in this volume, there are programs that have proven effective in promoting a child's development through caregiver-child interaction and stimulation, and with well designed preschool programs. While preschool programs currently cover a modest share of low income children, expansion of such services to at risk populations is a cost-effective means of improving overall educational achievement. Thus, focused preschool programs can serve as a key investment in a strategy to reduce the transmission of poverty from poor parents to their children

Het blijkt al snel een zeer succesvolle formule: steeds meer mensen maken van hun professionele diensten gebruik om hun geweten te verlichten. Tot ze op een dag naar een appartement worden gestuurd om verontschuldigingen aan te bieden aan een vrouw die op ijzingwekkende wijze om het leven is gebracht. Hun opdrachtgever laat het hier niet bij: ze moeten de vrouw ook begraven. Het is het begin van een nachtmerrie waarbij het viertal als schaakfiguren op een spoor van gruwelijkheid wordt gezet, waar van vergeving, of van een zwart-witte tegenstelling tussen daders en slachtoffers, geen sprake is. Sorry werd door kritiek en lezers verwelkomd als de beste thriller sinds jaren. Het valt niet alleen op door zijn vernuftige plot en adembenemende suspense, maar ook door de serieuze maatschappelijke thema's die worden aangeboord (kindermisbruik, schuld en boete). Het boek haalde meteen na verschijning de prestigieuze Krimi-Welt-Bestenliste. Een klant stuurt hen naar een appartement waar ze een dode vrouw aantreffen, de klant eist dat ze de vrouw begraven. Dat is het begin van een vreselijke nachtmerrie. Elk hoofdstuk wordt verteld vanuit een van de personages, het kost daardoor enige moeite voor je weet wie het is. Deze thriller gaat steeds weer een volkomen andere richting uit waardoor de lezer op nieuwe (dwaal)sporen wordt gezet. Het idee heeft iets weg van Stieg Larsson: als je denkt dat alles is opgelost, komen er nieuwe ontwikkelingen. Je moet er even inkomen, maar dan is het verhaal bijzonder spannend en bij tijden zeer schokkend. Goede karaktertekeningen en bijzonder realistisch. Paperback, vrij kleine druk. Het idee heeft iets weg van Stieg Larsson: als je denkt dat alles is opgelost, komen er nieuwe ontwikkelingen. The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford. These papers range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.
