Bridging bands for guided reading : resourcing for diversity into Key Stage 2 : includes a review of reading series designed for Key Stage 2 children working below age-related expectations Shirley Bickler; Suzanne Baker; Angela Hobsbaum Institute of Education Press (IOE Press) Stylus Publishing, LLC [distributor, Institute of Education Press (IOE Press), [London], 2006
The 'dip in literacy achievement' experienced by some children at age 78 may in part be due to a steep rise in text reading challenge that children encounter at this age. To help teachers set up comprehensive Guided Reading resources that support children's development as they move into Key Stage 2, the authors of Book Bands for Guided Reading have listed nearly 2,000 titles in a gradient of six colour bands. These progress from Orange to Lime and represent Working Towards NC Level 2 to Level 3. Each band is accompanied by two Guided Reading lessons plans and annotated scanned texts to indicate typical challenges that children face at each band. There is an introduction to reading development at this age, Guided Reading procedures and prompts, and advice on assessment. The term 'diversity' in the title applies not only to the variety of texts children need to work with, but also to the range of reading ability found in the average primary classroom. A special section in this book is devoted to a description and review of all the material marketed by the major UK educational publishers for those children working below agerelated expectations.

Learning Mathematics: From Hierarchies to Networks (Studies in Mathematics Education) Editor-prof Leone Burton; Editor-leone Burton Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 1999
Learning Mathematics brings together a collection of interrelated and forward-looking chapters by internationally recognized experts that explores changes in the theories and practices of learning (and teaching) mathematics. The authors reject a traditional, transmission view of the teaching of mathematics which has proved so ineffective for learning. In its place they offer information gathered from research and from practice about effects on the learners seeking to create and negotiate meaning. Learners are presented as actively attempting to make sense of the mathematics they encounter, and learners, teachers and researchers are offered examples of ho such sense-making activities, incorporated into mathematics classrooms, impact on coming to know. The book celebrates both diversity, in the range of different perspectives, contributions and topics, and unity, in the linking chapters and themes, It will be fascinating reading for those mathematics educators who are eager to engage with a socio-cultural perspective in order to better understand the complexity of learning mathematics.

nexusstc/Ethical Issues and Guidelines in Psychology (Routledge Modular Psychology)/efadb00d1850b29b99ed3ee46593f119.pdf
Ethical Issues and Guidelines in Psychology (Routledge Modular Psychology) Cara Flanagan, Philip Banyard Routledge, March 10, 2006
How do we know right from wrong, good from bad, help from hindrance, and how can we judge the behavior of others? Ethics are the rules and guidelines that we use to make such judgements. Often there are no clear answers, which make this subject both interesting and potentially frustrating. In this book the authors offer readers the opportunity to develop and express their own opinions in relation to ethics in psychology. There are a number of famous many psychological studies that appear to have been harmful or cruel to the people or animals who took part in them. For example, memory researchers carried out studies on a man who had no memory for over forty years, but because he had no memory, he was never able to agree to the studies. Is this a reasonable thing to do to someone? Comparative psychologist Harry Harlow found that he could create severe and lasting distress in monkeys by keeping them in social isolation. Is this a reasonable thing to do even if we find out useful things about human distress? If you were able to use psychological techniques to break someone down so that they revealed information that was useful to your government would you do it? If so, why and if not, why not? These ethical issues are not easy to resolve and the debates continue as we encounter new dilemmas. The book uses many examples of psychological research to look at key ethical issues ethical guidelines of psychologists socially sensitive research ethics in applied psychology the use of animals in research This book will be essential reading for and undergraduate and pre-undergraduate students studying psychology and students of other subjects concerned with ethics.

Dewey (The Arguments of the Philosophers) Tiles, J E Routledge, The Arguments of the Philosophers, Reprint, 1990
J. E. Tiles traces the consequences of the dominant characteristic of Dewey's thought, which was his desire to resist thinking of the main aspects of human life in isolation from one another and to resist the institutionalization of their separation. Tiles' book illuminates this major feature of Dewey's philosophy by both relating it to the views of his fellow pragmatists and by contrasting it with doctrines advanced by Aristotle and Hume, as well as philosophers who have risen to prominence since Dewey's death, such as Bernard Williams and Thomas Nagel.

The Myth of Rescue : Why the Democracies Could Not Have Saved More Jews From the Nazis William D. Rubinstein Routledge, 1, 20020122
It has long been argued that the Allies did little or nothing to rescue Europe’s Jews. Arguing that this has been consistently misinterpreted, The Myth of Rescue states that few Jews who perished could have been saved by any action of the Allies. In his new introduction to the paperback edition, Willliam Rubinstein responds to the controversy caused by his challenging views, and considers further the question of bombing Auschwitz, which remains perhaps the most widely discussed alleged lost opportunity for saving Jews available to the Allies.

From Roman Provinces to Medieval Kingdoms Thomas F. X. Noble Routledge, Rewriting histories, London ; New York, 2006
В 300 г. Families and Communities Responding to AIDS Peter Aggleton, Peter Davies - undifferentiated, Graham Hart, Peter M. Davies Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 1999
All over the world, families and communities are key providers of care and support. This is particularly true in relation to serious illnesses such as HIV and AIDS. Yet families and communities can also stigmatize their members, leaving people to die in the most appalling conditions. This book looks at the diversity of family and community responses to HIV and AIDS. By examining contexts as diverse as nuclear, extended and refugee family households, and gay community networks and structures, it offers important insight into the factors which lead to positive responses and those which trigger negative ones.

Learning Mathematics: From Hierarchies to Networks (Studies in Mathematics Education) Editor-prof Leone Burton; Editor-leone Burton Routledge, Studies in mathematics education series -- 13, London, England, 1999
Introduces alternative models of mathematical learning that improve on simple hierarchical models *Develops understanding of how mathematical pedagogy has changed post-Vygostky and Piaget *Foreward by Jerome Bruner How and why is mathematics taught? These can be problematic questions. The book seeks to improve on our current answers, finding better and more truthful explanations which are backed by evidence. The contributors have diverse perspectives, but their chapters are richly cross-referenced and commented on, to create a stimulating discourse. Agreement is found on particular matters, such as the need for non-hierarchical approaches, and the contributions are all well written to be relevant to policy-makers and practitioners, as well as researchers.

From Louis XIV to Napoleon : The Fate of a Great Power Professor Jeremy Black; Jeremy Black Routledge, 2022
Much of the period 1661-1815 appeared to be the age of France. France was the greatest power in Western Europe in the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and Louis XIV and Napoleon seemed to dominate their periods. yet when Louis XIV died in 1715, and again after Napoleon's attempt to resume power was defeated at Waterloo a century later, France appeared as a waning power. This failure in Europe was matched on the world scale. France was overtaken by Britain in the struggle for maritime predominance, and ended the period with her empire in ruins. From Louis XIV to Napoleon is a scholarly yet accessible account which considers why France was not more successful and throws light on French history, international relations, warfare and the rise and fall of French power.

Ethnical Issues in Psychology (Routledge Modular Psychology) Cara Flanagan, Philip Banyard Routledge, March 10, 2006

The book uses many examples of psychological research to look at

key ethical issues

ethical guidelines of psychologists

socially sensitive research

ethics in applied psychology

the use of animals in research

This book will be essential reading for and undergraduate and pre-undergraduate students studying psychology and students of other subjects concerned with ethics.

Human Learning : An Holistic Approach Peter Jarvis, Stella Parker, Jarvis, Peter RoutledgeFalmer, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2005

Learning is among the most basic of human activities. The study of, and research into, learning forms a central part of educational studies. The well-respected and established authors, Jarvis and Parker, not only focus on the psychological processes of human learning, but they also examine the importance of the relationship between the body and the mind. For the first time, this book considers how our neurological, biological, emotional and spiritual faculties all impact on human learning.

Topics covered include:

the biology of learning

personality and human learning

thinking and learning styles

gender and human learning

life cycle development and human learning

emotional intelligence and learning

morality and human learning

learning in the social context.

Drawing on material from the worlds of science and social science, and with contributions from international authors, this book will be of interest to academics in a wide range of disciplines.

Moral Theory in Santideva's Siksasamuccaya Cultivating the Fruits of Virtue (Routledgecurzon Critical Studies in Buddhism) Barbra R Clayton; Śāntideva Routledge, Routledge critical studies in Buddhism, annotated edition, 2006
This important text analyzes the moral theory of the seventh century Indian Mahayana master, Santideva, author of the well-known religious poem, the Bodhicaryavatara (Entering the Path of Enlightenment) as well as the significant, but relatively overlooked, Siksasamuccaya (Compendium of Teachings). With particular focus on the Siksasamuccaya, this book uses original translations and critical analysis in order to answer the question: How would Santideva’s ethics be understood in terms of Western moral theory? Santideva’s ethical presuppositions and moral reasoning are illuminated by analyzing his key moral terms and comparing them to other Buddhist principles. By focusing on a neglected Buddhist Sanskrit text by a major Mahayana figure, Barbra R. Clayton helps to redress a significant imbalance in the scholarship on Buddhist ethics, which has - up to now - focused primarily on the ethics of the Pali literature as interpreted in the Theravada tradition.

The Japanese Telecommunications Industry (Routledgecurzon Studies in the Growth Economies of Asia) Ruth Taplin; Masako Wakui; 理子(1969-) 和久井 Routledge, March 14, 2006
Presenting a comprehensive survey of the telecommunications industry in Japan, Taplin and Wakui cover the different sectors of the industry – including mobile, broadband and satellite, whilst considering key questions such as the structure and economics of the industry, government policy, and international relations issues connected to the industry. The volume brings together unique analysis by renowned experts in the telecommunications field. One major overall problem is that, unlike many other industries, Japan has lagged behind other countries in telecommunications. Japanese Telecommunications considers why this should be so, showing how far this is attributable to an unmodernized industry structure, and assessing the measures being taken to address the problem. After over a decade of struggle, Japan has recorded rapid uptake of broadband, and Japanese advanced mobile services have become increasingly successful on a global scale. Japan has also undergone regulatory reform, and competition policy is now given top priority by government. Taplin and Wakui examine the most recent developments and provide signposts for the future.

Georgian: A Learner's Grammar (Routledge Essential Grammars) George Hewitt Routledge, Essential grammars, 2nd ed, London, 2005
While I understand that Georgian textbooks are a small commodity, it does not mean that one should buy anything about Georgian. I do have a copy of 'Georgian: A Learner's Grammar,' as well as 'Beginner's Georgian,' 'Georgian: A Reading Grammar' and 'Georgian Language and Culture.' As far as this book is concerned, I was not aware of it's short-comings when I buy it. Though I do have the 2005 version as apposed to the earlier version. The 2005 version has been 'revised and corrected' and two Georgian speakers have proof-read the book, but I wouldn't know how much has changed between the two versions and if it has been improved to be a viable textbook. The grammar is comprehensive (though I don't know how correct it is, yet). The explanations are still a little dense and hard to follow. The book attempts to be very through with the grammar that is introduced. I think that is the books greatest flaw. It tries to present so much in such a short time. And the explanations are not the clearest for non-linguists. Also there is no audio for the book. Audio is essential for anyone learning another language, especially one this different from English. I find it very compelling that Dodona Kiziria (a professor of Georgian language, and native speaker!), wrote a review herself, and pointed out the short-comings that us learners could never see ourselves. My thanks to her. Though she did write it about the '96 version, not the revised '05 version. I would steer people towards the other books I cited in my review first, and then if they wish, to use this book (with caution) after getting a good foundation in the language. Admittedly Aronson's two books (the Reading Grammar and Language and Culture) are a bit hard to come-by now-a-days. Especially Aronson's (and Kiziria's) book 'Georgian Language and Culture,' which last time I checked was out of print. I was lucky enough to get it on Amazon's marketplace. But Kiziria's book 'Beginner's Georgian' (which has audio) should be easy enough to find.

Focuses on religious education, history, geography and cross-curricular planning in the primary school. It includes discussion of the purpose of education, and how the humanities fit with this purpose, with particular reference to the 1998 Education Act and 1994 National Curriculum Review. The book deals with the themes of time, place, values, communication, responsibilities and decision-making. These link the chapters, and are fully complemented with case studies. For each concept there are suggestions for practical classroom activities. The reader will find the book invaluable in integrating the subjects across the National Curriculum.

Families and Communities Responding to AIDS (Social Aspects of Aids Series) Peter Aggleton; Peter Davies; Graham Hart Routledge, 1 edition, December 28, 2000

Culture, Society And Sexuality: A Reader (Social Aspects of AIDS Series) Peter Aggleton; Richard Parker Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 1999
Since the beginnings of time, people have been interested in sex - the form it takes, the pleasure it can give, the circumstances in which it occurs, and what it means - both for the individuals concerned and to society more generally. Often seen as a synonym for love, sometimes as an expression of power, and infrequently as a means of exploitation and abuse, sex is a complex and multi-faceted aspect of human behaviour that has been written about by numerous writers and theorists worldwide. This book offers an introduction to the central debates in sexuality research. Among the issues examined are the social and cultural dimensions of sex, human sexuality and sex research. It will be of use to students of sociology, cultural studies, and health and behavioural studies.
