H ave you ever taken a course where you felt like you knew less when you finished than when you started? How about the course where the instructor told you all of the theories, policies, or practices that did not work, but little of what does work? We've heard these complaints from students over the years, and this book in some ways is a response to those laments. This book is designed for criminal justice and other social science courses that fall into one of two categories: (1) the capstone course (sometimes called senior seminar) and (2) policy-oriented courses. It is aimed at an upper-division undergraduate and graduate market, so at this point all of you taking this class should have completed a wide variety of foundational courses in your major. The book is organized somewhat like an introductory textbook would be arranged, with the standard police/courts/corrections treatment. However, a quick glance at the table of contents will show you that we have chosen to focus on a range of issues that continue to confront the criminal justice system. We're assuming that many of you will choose a career in the criminal justice field or in one of the areas allied with criminal justice. We acknowledge that this may not be true for some of you, and a group of you may never work in criminal justice. However, as "good citizens" and active consumers of justice processes and services, it is essential to understand what is working and what is not working in the criminal justice arena. We approached this project with certain assumptions in mind, and we feel that you will understand the book better once you understand our assumptions. First, the administration of justice is an inherently political process, and the criminal justice system in the United States (and in other nations as well) is a part of the country's political system. All of the laws that are enacted and all of the policies developed have at their very core a political dimension. Second, all of our worldviews are shaped by our experiences, morals, values, ethics, and a host of other factors. Whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or Independent-liberal or conservative-your values (and our values) color the picture we see of the world. Joseph P. Fell proposes that the solution to the problem of nihilism is found in the common experience of persons and the everyday commitments that one makes to people, practices, and institutions. In his landmark 1979 book Heidegger and Sartre, and in his subsequent essays, Fell describes a quiet but radical reform in the philosophical tradition that speaks to perennial dilemmas of thought and pressing issues for action. Since Descartes, at least, we have been puzzled as to what we can know, how we should act, and what we should value. The skeptical influence of modern dualism--distilled in the mind-body problem at arose with the assertion "I think, therefore I am"--has shot through not just philosophy and psychology, but also society, politics, and culture. With dualism arose radical subjectivism and the concomitant problems of nihilism and alienation. The broad aim of phenomenology is to repair the rupture of self and world. Announced by Edmund Husserl and developed by Jean-Paul Sartre, Martin Heidegger, and John William Miller, who drew from the North American tradition, this is the project to which Fell has devoted more than a half century of reflection and technical elaboration. In this volume, an array of scholars consider, criticize, and cultivate Fell's key contributions to the phenomenological project. In Neuropsychological Aspects of Substance Use Disorders, internationally recognized experts provide clinicians with the most up to date information on the neuropsychology of substance use disorders based on the empirical literature. Substance use disorders continue to be a major health concern in the United States and worldwide, although their causes and effective treatments remain elusive. Research in this area has expanded dramatically over the past two decades and provided insights into psychobiological, behavioral, and genetic factors that contribute to the onset and maintenance of substance use disorders and associated neuropsychological abnormalities. This research has provided a strong empirical foundation that has direct implications for clinical neuropsychological practice and created a need to provide the practitioner with a cogent and up-to-date summary of current developments, which is the goal of this volume. Chapters in this volume are organized into three sections that are designed to provide a translational overview of basic research and treatment findings regarding addictions, neuropsychological and neurological sequalae of the most common substances of abuse, and consideration of special issues that might confound interpretation of neuropsychological test results. Section I provides an overview of addictions, including diagnoses based on the DSM-IV, as well as the most current conceptualizations of addiction from psychobiological, genetic, and behavioral and no economics perspectives, providing the reader with a broad evidence-based conceptual framework. Section II reviews the most common substances of abuse including coverage of structural and functional neuroimaging findings, epidemiological evidence, and neuropsychological sequelae. Substances included in this section represent the most commonly encountered drugs of abuse. Section III includes coverage of the number of special topics, including specific issues related to psychiatric, medical, and neurological comorbidities. Topics included in this section represent areas of common concerns faced by clinical neuropsychologists in the interpretation and application of neuropsychological test results.

We willingly imagine that the speed of development of events has always remained constant here on earth. This is reflected in the fact that it is generally believed that the rate of natural phenomena is the same today as it has always been in the past and will remain this way more or less in the future. It is, now, a fact that the speed of progression of events is not constant over time. It was ascertained that since around the beginning of the 20th century the rate has accelerated in various fields, hence the term "acceleration of history" came to describe this phenomenon. This acceleration continues its course today and will even intensify. Examples meeting these historical vaults in short time periods are many, either local or international, that contributed to the change of the direction of history. Under any circumstances though, the "mature" conditions for change are not enough without the human interference. This phenomenon has been referred to as the "acceleration of history" in order to emphasize the fact that if in the past a certain lapse of time was necessary for history to unfold--for the events to take place--today, and starting around the beginning of the 20th century, this time lapse was becoming increasingly shorter. The events today, therefore, have intensified much more than in the past. So, which are considered as the main acceleration periods in history? Which events or developments de-normalized or deeply reformed the then acceptable norms, either national or international? Which events or developments changed the hard bits of history? These are the questions that we will try to answer in this edited volume.
