lgli/Li, Xinling - Black Masculinity and Hip-Hop Music: Black Gay Men Who Rap (2018, Palgrave Macmillan).lit
Xinling Li Black Masculinity and Hip Hop Music Black Gay Men Who Rap Springer Singapore Palgrave Macmillan Li, Xinling Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2019, 2018
This book offers an interdisciplinary study of hip-hop music written and performed by rappers who happen to be out black gay men. It examines the storytelling mechanisms of gay themed lyrics, and how these form protests and become enabling tools for (black) gay men to discuss issues such as living on the down-low and HIV/AIDS. It considers how the biased promotion of feminised gay male artists/characters in mainstream entertainment industry has rendered masculinity an exclusively male heterosexual property, providing a representational framework for men to identify with a form of “homosexual masculinity” – one that is constructed without having to either victimise anything feminine or necessarily convert to femininity. The book makes a strong case that it is possible for individuals (like gay rappers) to perform masculinity against masculinity, and open up a new way of striving for gender equality.

A New Model of Political Reasoning : China and Human Rights Kanzhen Li (auth.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
Why politics and international relations "seem" to be driven by power/strategies in some conditions but "seem" to be attached to values/beliefs in other situations? Based on findings in (political) psychology and international relations, the book builds a new political reasoning model: a two-layered motivation-heuristic complex. The model grasps the internal mechanism that drives the co-existent and dynamic relationship between material and ideational considerations in making political choices/phenomena diverse and evolving across situations and periods. Applied to the case of China and human rights, the model helps understand several questions that attract those who are interested in the topic: e.g., the roots and contents of strategic and conceptual factors that continuously influence China's human rights idea/policies; if, why and how the strategy-ideational relationships in such idea/policies evolve across periods; and the role that China's national security condition and external pressure play during such evolving relationships. Dr Kanzhen Li is a post-doctoral fellow at China Foreign Affairs University, Beijing

White Gold: The Commercialisation of Rice Farming in the Lower Mekong Basin Rob Cramb (editor) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2020
This open access book is about understanding the processes involved in the transformation of smallholder rice farming in the Lower Mekong Basin from a low-yielding subsistence activity to one producing the surpluses needed for national self-sufficiency and a high-value export industry. For centuries, farmers in the Basin have regarded rice as “white gold”, reflecting its centrality to their food security and well-being. In the past four decades, rice has also become a commercial crop of great importance to Mekong farmers, augmenting but not replacing its role in securing their subsistence. This book is based on collaborative research to (a) compare the current situation and trajectories of rice farmers within and between different regions of the Lower Mekong, (b) explore the value chains linking rice farmers with new technologies and input and output markets within and across national borders, and (c) understand the changing role of government policies in facilitating the on-going evolution of commercial rice farming. An introductory section places the research in geographical and historical context. Four major sections deal in turn with studies of rice farming, value chains, and policies in Northeast Thailand, Central Laos, Southeastern Cambodia, and the Mekong Delta. The final section examines the implications for rice policy in the region as a whole. Erscheinungsdatum: 30.01.2020

Creative City As an Urban Development Strategy : The Case of Selected Malaysian Cities Suet Leng Khoo,Nicole Shu Fun Chang (auth.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
"This compendium is an invaluable read for urban geographers/planners. The Malaysian government has formulated a set of strategies to enhance urban development and the role of cities. This book contributes profoundly to this objective. It rises above previous work on competitive cities in Malaysia in terms of detail and richness of local knowledge." -Morshidi Sirat, Professor of Urban Geography, Universiti Sains Malaysia "Ipoh is synonymous with an ideal retirement city and old town for many people. In fact, its rich history and cultural heritage lay good potential and endless possibilities for urban regeneration. This book is definitely providing a timely analysis and insightful perspective for us to understand more about this former tin mining city, and on efforts to develop it towards a creative city." -Tan Kar Hing, former Perak state's executive member for Tourism, Arts and Culture This book is a pioneering work to position the creative city concept within Malaysian urban development discourse. The chapters are written and systematically sequenced to be all-encompassing and comprehensible to audiences both from the academic and non-academic realms. The nascency of creative city development in Malaysia has motivated the timely exploration of the viability of this strategy for selected Malaysian cities (i.e. Kuala Lumpur, George Town, Ipoh, Johor Bahru). The book also discusses the global discourse on creative city and its critiques. This is followed by an overview of Malaysia's macrolevel socio-economic and political structures as well as national policies to frame the Malaysian creative city narrative. The case study chapters are novel, as each Malaysian city unravels its unique experiences and dissects the way the city responds to the creative city agenda amidst local nuances and idiosyncrasies. Suet Leng Khoo, Associate Professor at Universiti Sains Malaysia, has been involved in research related to creative cities for ten years. She has undertaken research projects funded by the Sumitomo Foundation and also the Newton Fund. Suet Leng has published extensively on creative cities in both international and local journals. Nicole Shu Fun Chang studied the contributions of the art sector as part of the creative economy in local economic development for her PhD research. Her research examined the potential of the art sector, focusing on the visual arts industry as one of the core creative industries, in developing a creative city

This book offers valuable insights into the management of uncertainty and business enterprises risk. Propelled by clear construct and communication, Nishimura introduces an innovate model (COLC) that embodies forward-looking, globalized understandings of how managers can exploit profit opportunities, transform risk into profit opportunities, and minimize enterprise risk. This book is for every manager who is serious about promoting business competitiveness and success. --Ralph Adler, Professor, Department of Accountancy & Finance, University of Otago, New Zealand Nishimura's discussion on the need for feed forward control in today's dynamic and uncertain world is exceptionally brilliant. Collusion, Local Governments and Development in China : A Reflection on the China Model Huihua Nie, Haifeng Li, Ping Chen Springer Singapore Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2017
By analyzing the interactions between China’s central government and its local governments and enterprises, this book constructs an analytical framework of government-enterprise collusion, analyzing the impact of collusion within the China model on Chinese society. Against the background of decentralization and under information asymmetry, this text argues that Chinese local governments connive at enterprises’ adoption of a low-cost ‘bad’ mode of production — a ‘stimulus’ for quick growth at the cost of safer working conditions — so as to obtain fiscal or political capital for further promotion. Through an examination of coalmine mortality rate, environmental pollution, food safety and house pricing, the book argues that collusion is the intrinsic drive of the China model. It consider how against a backdrop of political centralization and economic decentralization, collusion exacerbates corruption and impacts both on the country’s social development and on its foreign direct investment. Offering an analysis of future prospects for the China model, it puts forward key policy proposals to improve domestic institutional construction through reform. Erscheinungsdatum: 07.09.2017

COVID-19, Technology and Marketing : Moving Forward and the New Normal Vanessa Ratten,Park Thaichon (eds.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book addresses how Covid-19 has damaged businesses and how businesses can adapt to the new normal. In doing so, the book contributes to theories associated with the marketing management, by assessing opportunities and challenges associated with the implementation of technology and marketing management during and post Covid-19. Although there is increasing research in consumer or business management acceptance of new technologies and digital marketing, the impact of these on marketing management during the Covid-19 are not adequately investigated, leading to overstated hypothetical predictions of its future potential. Chapters in the book therefore focus on new economic models such as sharing economy and business structures such as omnichannel, where advancements have enabled firms to build a one-on-one relationship with customers by collecting, storing, aggregating and analysing customer information across various touchpoints. Contributions in the book also focus on new technologies such as blockchain, automation solution, information technology management, and customer relationship management (CRM) in highlighting connections between these new technologies and marketing management. The book will be useful for anyone aiming to gain a better understanding of the current and future technologies that may play a role or have a robust impact on marketing management during Covid-19.

This book discusses what is often called the “Great Leap Famine”, which occurred in China during the years from 1959 to 1961. Scholarly consensus suggests that 30 million Chinese perished. Yang Songlin's book provides an evidence-based, systematic and substantial rebuff, concluding that a much smaller number of deaths can be verified. This book is of interest to scholars of China and Chinese development and politics, economists, and demographers.

Media and Conflict in the Social Media Era in China Shixin Ivy Zhang Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2020
This book explores the media and conflict relationship in the age of social media through the lens of China. Inspired by the concepts of medialization of conflict and actor-network theory, this book centers on four main actors in wars and conflicts: social media platform, mainstream news organizations, online users and social media content. These four human and non-human actors associate, interact and negotiate with each other in the social media network.  The central argument is that social media is playing an enabling role in contemporary wars and conflicts. Both professional media outlets and web users employ the functionalities of social media platforms to set, counter-set or expand the online public agenda.  Social media platform embodies a web of technological and human complexities with different actors, factors, interests, and power relations. These four actors and the macro social-political context are influential in the medialization of conflict in the social media era. ‘’Empirically rich and theoretically innovative, this book advances our understanding of the constantly changing dynamic between international conflict and its medialization. With its compelling case studies, Shixin Zhang’s monograph makes a valuable contribution to the literature on Chinese social media in conflict situations.’’ - Daya K. Thussu, Professor of International Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong

A New Blue Ocean : Prospects for Latin American SMEs in the Belt and Road Initiative Yihai Li,Aníbal Carlos Zottele (eds.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book explores the achievements and obstacles confronting China and major Latin American countries in developing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the context of new changes in "The Belt and Road" Initiative. zlib/no-category/Pavin Chachavalpongpun/Love and Death of King Ananda Mahidol of Thailand_27953241.epub
Love and Death of King Ananda Mahidol of Thailand Pavin Chachavalpongpun, 1971- Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2021
This book examines two aspects of the abbreviated reign of King Ananda Mahidol (1935-1946), or King Rama VIII, of the current Chakri dynasty of Thailand. First, it discusses the royal family's plot to thwart a romantic relationship between the young king, Ananda, and his Swiss girlfriend, Marileine Ferrari, a daughter of a famous pastor of Lausanne, Switzerland. Interracial marriage, particularly with Westerners, has been strictly forbidden for Thai kings or heirs apparent. The restriction stems from the interwoven connection between sexual relationship and the security of the throne. The second part investigates the mysterious death of King Ananda, a long-held taboo topic in Thailand. Although the two events were not specially related, both in their own way served to unavoidably shake the position of the monarchy and hence threaten its existence. The palace's reactions to these events demonstrated its continuous search to maintain its power and ultimately to warrant its survival.

Observing the changes in the business environment brought about by the forces of intensifying globalization, the book presents a highly effective management model that builds on the superior aspects of Japanese-style management while overcoming its weaknesses. It is a multi-layered human-resources management model that combines the mutually complementary aspects of the Japanese and Anglo-Saxon systems, incorporating the strengths of both systems. This hybrid model is aimed at increasing workplace motivation, promoting the creation of new value, and enhancing performance and can be used successfully in many countries around the world. It will be of interest to business strategists and consultants, scholars, and entrepreneurs.

Yārsān of Iran, Socio-Political Changes and Migration S. Behnaz Hosseini Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2020
This book examines how socio-political surroundings have affected the evolution of Yārsāni religious thought and why the Yārsāni religious belief, despite its fundamental disagreement with Islamic tenets, has been affiliated with Islam. It also considers the historical context and socio-religious milieu in which the Yārsāni belief appropriates religious forces to survive their religion, how Yārsānis experience their religion in Islamic society, and what are differences are significant in their lived experiences. The author explores how the experience of worship influences real life for the Yārsānis from the perspectives of sociology, behaviorism, content analysis, cultural studies and ethnography in Iran and diaspora with focus on Sweden. Yārsāni followers became known as those who "don't tell secrets," primarily because they were not allowed to promote and advertise their religion in public, but recently have started to reveal their religion, especially in social media. This book discovers the transformation of this religion, and in particular in which context an individual can change the content of religion, and bring about new ideas regarding religion and belief

Ten Crises : The Political Economy of China’s Development (1949-2020) Wen, Tiejun Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Global University for Sustainability Book Series, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This open access handbook, Ten Crises systematically traces the economic history of China from 1949 to 2020, unravelling the complex domestic and global factors leading to the cyclical crises identified by WEN and his research team, and examining the corresponding counteracting policies and measures by the government to resolve or defer the crises. The book offers profound insights into China’s endeavours and predicaments on the path of modernization, and contemplates opportunities and lessons for the forging of alternative trajectories not only for China but also for the global south: to reconstruct rural communities for integrated cooperation and governance, and to revitalize ecological civilization. https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/71306

New Zealand{u2019}s Global Responsibility A Small State{u2019}s Leading Role in Establishing Progressive Ideas László Szöllősi-Cira;(auth.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2022, Singapore :, 2022
"László Szöllősi-Cira has written a provocative and timely book. At a time when obsessions about great power conflict dominate International Relations scholarship, Szöllősi-Cira reminds us that smaller powers still have a (sometimes influential) role to play in international politics. Szöllősi-Cira skilfully examines the peculiarities and eccentricities of New Zealand{u2019}s foreign policymaking and shows how this relatively small and distant country has managed to remain not only independent but influential. Such insights help contextualize New Zealand{u2019}s current foreign policymaking in the face of growing Sino-American competition, making this book an urgent must-read. " {u2014}Nicholas Ross Smith, Assistant Professor, The University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China ?In New Zealand{u2019}s Global Responsibility, László Szöllősi-Cira makes the crucial but often overlooked point that New Zealand{u2019}s experience challenges the realist assumption that small states are destined to be marginal actors in international relations. Drawing on specific examples concerning the fourth Labour government{u2019}s non-nuclear stance and the embrace of trade liberalization in the mid-1980s, this book demonstrates that it is entirely possible for a relatively small state like New Zealand to become a norm setter and ideas entrepreneur in an increasingly interconnected world. This book should be read by both policy-makers and serious students of world affairs.? {u2014}Robert G. Patman, Sesquicentennial Distinguished Chair and Professor of International Relations, University of Otago, New Zealand New Zealand often plays leading roles in implementing progressive ideas. This book investigates what explanatory factors facilitated the country to become such a relevant normative actor. New Zealand{u2019}s case suggests that democratic institutions, skilled bureaucracy, and ambitious politicians play the crucial roles to create global influence. The case studies included in this book develop the argument that small states can better influence international politics by focusing on domestic issues. In contributing to discourses on New Zealand{u2019}s possible future role, the book is an invaluable resource to intellectuals, researchers, and students alike. László Szöllősi-Cira holds a PhD in Politics from the University of Otago. His academic interests include political theory and political economy.

Global History with Chinese Characteristics: Autocratic States along the Silk Road in the Decline of the Spanish and Qing Empires 1680-1796 (Palgrave Studies in Comparative Global History) Manuel Pérez-García Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave studies in comparative global history, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book's insight into Chinese and international history offers timely and challenging perspectives on initiatives like "Chinese characteristics", "The New Silk Road" and "One Belt, One Road" in a broad historical context. Global History with Chinese Characteristics analyses the feeble state capacity of Qing China questioning the so-called "High Qing" (shèng qīng 盛清) era's economic prosperity as the political system was set into a "power paradox" or "supremacy dilemma." This is a new thesis introduced by the author demonstrating that interventionist states entail weak governance. Macao and Marseille as a new case study aim to compare Mediterranean and South China markets to provide new insights into both modern eras' rising trade networks, non-official institutions, and interventionist impulses of autocratic states such as China's Qing and Spain's Bourbon empires.

The book ends with chapters dedicated to analyzing the BRI conditions and effects on SMEs of Latin-American countries. These country specific chapters will show the specific opportunities and challenges the countries conditions, be they political, geological, etc. may have on the development of SMEs under the BRI. Ecoscenography : An Introduction to Ecological Design for Performance Tanja Beer;(auth.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
"This ground-breaking book is the first to bring an ecological focus to theatre and performance design, both in scholarship and in practice. Ecoscenography weaves environmental philosophies and practices across genres and fields to provide a captivating vision for the future of sustainable theatre production. The book forefronts leading designers that are driving this emerging field into the mainstream through their relational and reciprocal engagement with place, audiences, materials, and processes. Beyond its radical philosophy and framework, Ecoscenography makes a compelling case for pursuing an ecological ethic in theatre and performance design, not only as a moral imperative, but for the extraordinary possibilities that it offers for more-than-human engagement. Based on her personal insights as a leading ecological researcher and practitioner, Beer offers a rich resource for scholars, students and practitioners alike, opening up new processes and aesthetics of theatrical design that enhance the environmental and social advocacy of the field."-- Quatrième de couverture

lgli/UNCTAD - Handbook on special economic zones in Africa (2021, ).fb2
Handbook on special economic zones in Africa UNCTAD Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 2021
This book evaluates African Special Economic Zones from the perspective of learning from China's experiences with such Zones and the impact of Chinese policy and investment on African Zones. Utilising case studies of perceived successful Special Economic Zones in China, the book proposes the Chinese Model of Special Economic Zones as an evaluation and benchmarking tool against which African Special Economic Zones are considered. Applying several case studies on African Special Economic Zones, the book then details the competitiveness of African Special Economic Zones with a specific focus on attracting Chinese investors to these Zones. The economic, social and environmental impact of these zones are appraised. African Nations' efforts, or lack thereof, to enable successful Special Economic Zones are critically analysed. Finally, Special Economic Zones in Africa are compared against the Chinese Model; and an African Model of Special Economic Zones is proposed. Recommendations are presented to both African Nations' leadership and Chinese policymakers and investors as to how these Zones can be improved to enhance competitiveness and the attainment of the Zones' sustainable development objectives. The Attention Economy and How Media Works : Simple Truths for Marketers Karen Nelson-Field Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2020
This book offers a considered voice on the advertising chaos that colours our rapidly changing media environment in a world of fake news, fast facts and seriously depleted attention stamina. Rather than simply herald disruption, Karen Nelson-Field starts an intelligent conversation on what it will take for businesses to win in an attention economy, the advertising myths we need to leave behind and the scientific evidence we can use to navigate a complex advertising and media ecosystem. This book makes sense of viewability standards, coverage and clutter; it talks about the real quality behind a qCPM and takes a deep dive into the relationship between attention and sales. It explains the stark reality of human attention processing in advertising. Readers will learn how to maximise a viewer’s divided attention by leveraging specific media attributes and using attention-grabbing creative triggers. Nelson-Field asks you to pay attention to a disrupted advertising future without panic, but rather with a keen eye on the things that brand owners can learn to control.ISBN : 9789811515408

Risk Management in East Asia: Systems and Frontier Issues (Governing China in the 21st Century) Yijia Jing (editor), Jung-Sun Han (editor), Keiichi Ogawa (editor) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book is a joint endeavour of the three partner universities to develop a book with in-depth and state-of-art analysis for the academic community of East Asia and the world. Past disasters, like the 2008 Great Sichuan Earthquake in China and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, saw good efforts of East Asian countries in helping each other. Such a trend has been further strengthened in these countries’ recent cooperation and mutual support in their fight against Covid-19 pandemic. While China, Japan, and South Korea are geographically and culturally contiguous and hence may share some characteristics in their risk management principles and practices, there may also be many significant differences due to their different socioeconomic and political systems. The commonalities and variances in East Asia risk management systems are also reflected by their recent responses to the Covid-19 challenges. While all three countries demonstrated overall success in controlling the epidemic, the measures taken by them were different. This research will be of interest to policymakers, scholars and economists. Erscheinungsdatum: 04.03.2021

Russia’s Relations with the GCC and Iran Nikolay Kozhanov (eds.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book offers insight into the motives behind Moscow's behaviour in the Persian Gulf (with a specific focus on the GCC member states and Iran), considering Russia's growing role in the Middle East and its desire to protect national interests using a wide range of means. Post-Capitalist Futures : Paradigms, Politics, and Prospects Samuel Alexander, Sangeetha Chandrashekeran, Brendan Gleeson Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Alternatives and Futures: Cultures, Practices, Activism and Utopias, Alternatives and Futures: Cultures, Practices, Activism and Utopias, 1, 2022
As the crises of capitalism continue to intensify, radical thinkers must conjure realistic and inspirational alternative futures beyond this failing social order. This book presents a stimulating array of essays exploring such post-capitalist futures. With contributions and perspectives from the Global North and Global South, central topics include ecosocialism, ecofeminism, degrowth, community economies, and the Green New Deal. There are also chapters offering analyses of land, energy, technology, universal basic services, and (re)localisation of economies. The book is in three parts. The first presents various alternative paradigms for thinking about – and working toward – post-capitalist futures. The second section offers perspectives on alternative governance strategies and approaches for post-capitalist futures. The closing section gathers various analyses of post-capitalist geographies and resistance. Going beyond critique and instead envisioning alternative imaginaries, this collection should challenge and inspire readers to think and act upon the range of possibilities immanent in our crisis-ridden present. Audiovisual Tourism Promotion : A Critical Overview Diego Bonelli & Alfio Leotta Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book deploys the concept of 'audiovisual tourism promotion' to account for the promotional functions performed by a vast array of diverse media texts including tourism films, feature films, digital videos conceived for online circulation, video games and TV commercials. From this point of view, this volume fills a major gap in the literature by providing the first comprehensive critical overview of audiovisual tourism promotion as a distinct media field. In this book, the study of audiovisual tourism promotion is characterised by an interdisciplinary approach which combines film studies, media studies, human geography, sociology, tourism studies, history, postcolonial and gender studies. This book will appeal to a wide range of students and scholars from different disciplines. Dr. Diego Bonelli completed his PhD in Film at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His primary research interests focus on the relationship between film and tourism promotion. Diego's work has been published in various film and tourism studies journals including Studies in Australasian Cinema and The Journal of Tourism History. Dr. Alfio Leotta is Senior Lecturer in Film at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. His primary research interests focus on the relation between film and tourism; the globalisation of film production; and fantasy cinema. Dr Leotta is the author of Touring the Screen: Tourism and New Zealand Film Geographies (2011); Peter Jackson (2016); and The Cinema of John Milius (2018)

Located Research : Regional Places, Transitions and Challenges Angela Campbell; Michelle Duffy; Beth Edmondson Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1. ed. 2020, Singapore, 2020
This book examines the diversity of practice in regional research and its contribution to local, national and global issues. Three themes are advanced here: Place and change, Transition and resilience, and Challenges for the future. Contributors embrace frameworks of co-design and transdisciplinary practice to build communities of practice in response to lived experience in regional contexts. Their work highlights the strategic importance of a regional focus at a time when global connectivity and mobility is increasing and the complexity of ‘wicked’ problems demands more than one approach or solution. Such complex problems require nuanced, and at times ‘bespoke’ methodological approaches to better understand and support not just regional adaptation, resilience and transformation, but to manage all these things at a time when change is everywhere. Australia in the Expanding Global Crisis : The Geopolitics of Racism Erik Paul Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2020
This book is a study of the key components and contradictions of the escalating global crisis and their impact on modern Australia. It elaborates the damage being done to democracy, human rights, and the fabric of society. Racism is structured in the universality of the nation-state and capitalism in the 21st century. Racism is a process that discriminates and segregates the human species, creating major conflicts and antagonisms. It generates a global struggle for equality and social justice. The global crisis is energised by the contradiction between a global capitalism that is in effect totalitarian and the imperatives of economic growth driving every nation-state of the world. Racism is embodied in the emergence of a new imperialism to maintain Western global hegemony, a growing source of instability and violence in the world system, endangering the survival of humanity. The book advocates the promotion of full democratic participation in the struggle for social, political, and economic equality. Erscheinungsdatum: 25.01.2020

Socio-Economic Development in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region : Disparities and Power Struggle in China’s North-West Alessandra Cappelletti Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2020, Singapore, 2020
In an unprecedented exploration of space and power in rural Xinjiang, a Chinese region home to the Muslim population of the Uyghurs, this book adopts a grounded theory approach and a trans-ethnic perspective into the complex and sensitive topic of land issues and agricultural land evictions in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. By exposing the dynamics of land acquisition and power building in the politically contested space of the region, the author shows how state owned land in a key commercial and cultural hub on the new Silk Road became a commodity, in a context of violent human interactions driven by power. Relying on previously undisclosed material and on a unique field research among farmers and local authorities, the author retraces the steps of Uyghur peasant workers, entangled in a suspended situation between abandoned rural villages, migration and urban alienation, in a book which explores agency in violent processes of social change, and adds concepts and insights to the current knowledge of how we become modern citizens. The microcosm of Kashgar, an oasis-city in Xinjiang, acts as a mirror reflecting socio political dynamics framing people’s identity. Shedding light on one of the most inaccessible region in China, this book is a key read for academics and a broader public willing to get a clearer view of one of the sourest power struggle in the most contested region within the next superpower.

Worlding a Peripheral Literature (Canon and World Literature) Marko Juvan Springer Singapore : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, Canon and world literature, 1st ed. 2019, Singapore, 2019
Bringing together the analyses of the literary world-system, translation studies, and the research of European cultural nationalism, this book contests the view that texts can be attributed global importance irrespective of their origin, language, and position in the international book market. Focusing on Slovenian literature, almost unknown to world literature studies, this book addresses world literature’s canonical function in the nineteenth-century process of establishing European letters as national literatures. Aware of their dependence on imperial powers, (semi)peripheral national movements sought international recognition through, among other things, the newly invented figure of the national poet. Writers central to dependent national communities were canonized to represent their respective cultures to the norm-giving Other – the emerging world literary canon and its aesthetic ideology. Hence, national literatures asserted their linguo-cultural individuality through the process of worlding; that is, by their positioning in the international literary world informed by the supposed universality of the aesthetic. Confucianism and the Chinese Self : Re-examining Max Weber’s China Jack Barbalet Springer Singapore, Singapore, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2017
"Setting the context for the upheavals and transformations of contemporary China, this text provides a re-assessment of Max Weber's celebrated sociology of China. Returning to the sources drawn on by Weber in The Religion of China: Confucianism and Taoism, it offers an informed account of the Chinese institutions discussed and a concise discussion of Weber's writings on 'the rise of modern capitalism'. Notably it subjects Weber's argument to critical scrutiny, arguing that he drew upon sources which infused the central European imagination of the time, constructing a sense of China in Europe, whilst European writers were constructing a particular image of imperial China and its Confucian framework. Re-examining Weber's discussion of the role of the individual in Confucian thought and the subordination, in China, of the interests of the individual to those of the political community and the ancestral clan, this book offers a cutting edge contribution to the continuing debate on Weber's RoC in East Asia today, against the background of the rise of modern capitalism in the "little dragons" of Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea, and the "big dragons" of Japan and the People's Republic of China."--Page 4 of cover

Travel, Translation and Transmedia Aesthetics : Franco-Chinese Literature and Visual Arts in a Global Age Shuangyi Li Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2021, Singapore, 2021
This book examines the works of four contemporary first-generation Chinese migrant writer-artists in France: François CHENG, GAO Xingjian, DAI Sijie, and SHAN Sa. They were all born in China, moved to France in their adulthood to pursue their literary and artistic ambitions, and have enjoyed the highest French and Western institutional recognitions, from the Grand Prix de la Francophonie to the Nobel Prize in Literature. They have established themselves not only as writers, but also as translators, calligraphers, painters, playwrights, and filmmakers mainly in their host country. French has become their dominant―but not only―language of literary creation (except for Gao); yet, linguistic idioms, poetic imagery, and classical thought from Chinese cultural heritage permeate their French texts and visual artworks, reflecting a strong translingual and transmedial sensibility. The book provides not only distinctive literary and artistic examples beyond existing studies of intercultural encounter, French postcolonial, and Chinese diasporic enquiries; more importantly, it formulates a theoretical model that captures the creative dynamics between the French/francophone and Chinese/sinophone spaces of articulation, thereby contributing to contemporary debates about literary and artistic production, interpretation, and circulation in the global development of comparative/world literature, as well as intermediality studies.

nexusstc/Intimate Assemblages: The Politics of Queer Identities and Sexualities in Indonesia/f0e880508ea887c621a59c3958081730.epub
Intimate Assemblages : The Politics of Queer Identities and Sexualities in Indonesia Hendri Yulius Wijaya Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd Fka Springer Science + Business Media Singapore Pte Ltd, 1st ed. 2020, Singapore, 2020
Written in the aftermath of Indonesia's anti-queer panic in 2016, this book tells the story of local queer movements in challenging the heteronormative society and resisting the homophobic hostility from religious conservative groups and the state. The year 2016 was a touchstone moment for queer issues in Indonesia, marked by the ubiquity of anti-queer campaigns, along with the pervasive use of the term 'LGBT' in public. Drawing on historical archives and his engagements with local queer activisms, Hendri Yulius Wijaya traces the historical shifts of gender and sexual identities in Indonesia, from gay and lesbian, to LGBT, to SOGIE minorities, while exploring their connections with the country's socio-political circumstances and the globalization of queer rights.   Using a strategic blend of queer theory and assemblage framework, Wijaya demonstrates how activists refashion transnational sexuality discourses to balance international developments of queer rights against the contingencies of daily life in Indonesia. Equally importantly, he sheds light on emerging practices in activist landscapes, including the emergence of sexuality experts and the professionalization of activisms. In analyzing the rising tide of homophobic paranoia, Wijaya further shows how the current anti-queer campaigns have branched out into a broader assault on feminism and promoted a form of 'aversion therapy' that positions same-sex attraction as a divine ordeal.    Intimate Assemblages follows the travails of queer activists in defining what it means to be queer in contemporary Indonesia.

Space, Place and Capitalism : The Literary Geographies of The Unknown Industrial Prisoner Brett Heino Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, Singapore, 2021
This book is an original contribution to literary geography and commentaries on the work of David Ireland. It plots the relationship between the spaces and places of 1970s Australian capitalism as it evolves through Ireland's 1971 Miles Franklin prize-winning novel The Unknown Industrial Prisoner . In particular, the book theorises the relationship between space and place in literature through two highly innovative arguments: a focus on the spatial unconscious as a means to assess and track the spatiality of capitalism in the novel form; and the articulation of a regime of space through the perceived, conceived and lived constitution of space. Drawing together concepts from radical geography and structural Marxist literary theory, it explores the dominance of the regime of abstract space in the Australian context. The text also examines the nature and possibilities of place-based strategies of resistance, and concludes by suggesting opportunities for future research and plotting the ways in which The Unknown Industrial Prisoner continues to speak to contemporary Australia.

Tourism and Coastal Development in Japan Lesley Crowe-Delaney (auth.) Springer Singapore : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2020, Singapore, 2020
This book explores contemporary tourism and coastal developments in Hyogo, Japan—the nation’s only non-peninsular prefecture bordering two oceans. In striking detail, Dr. Lesley Crowe-Delaney skillfully contextualizes tourism industry and policy; illustrates coastal urban and rural development dichotomies; discusses hegemonic devices of nationalism, nature, authenticity and tradition, as embedded in tourism strategies; and highlights the nuances of Japan’s distinctive administrative systems and specific approaches to tourism. Crowe-Delaney reveals the strains placed on coastal communities when fisheries, tourism, sustainable development, and national policies intersect, offering readers an enlightening discourse of the potency of tourism as a rejuvenation tool.
