Channel 2 System Output at Detector ................................. 621 PREFACE The emerging networks in our society will touch upon the life of everyone. These networks have started to bring about an immense information revolution. The revolution within our intellectual life will be similar to the materialistic revolution that followed the invention of the steam and the internal combustion engines. From the perspective of the 1980s, the information networks are indeed evolving and their influence can only be gradual. However, the strides of progress are accelerating in the 1990s. Networks in our society offer the most candid area of convergence for the computer and the communication technologies. The two technologies are mature in their own right. However, there are a few major factors that prevent network engineers from constructing modern communication systems from components borrowed from each of these two technologies: • Major innovations are happening. • Specialized components evolve in synergistic patterns. • New technologies emerge. • Inquisitive minds cross disciplinary barriers.

Computation and Neural Systems Anthony J. Bell (auth.), Frank H. Eeckman, James M. Bower (eds.) Springer US, Springer US Imprint : Springer, 1, 1993
Computational neuroscience is best defined by its focus on understanding the nervous systems as a computational device rather than by a particular experimental technique. Accordinlgy, while the majority of the papers in this book describe analysis and modeling efforts, other papers describe the results of new biological experiments explicitly placed in the context of computational issues. The distribution of subjects in __Computation and Neural Systems__ reflects the current state of the field. In addition to the scientific results presented here, numerous papers also describe the ongoing technical developments that are critical for the continued growth of computational neuroscience. __Computation and Neural Systems__ includes papers presented at the First Annual Computation and Neural Systems meeting held in San Francisco, CA, July 26--29, 1992.

Index Data Structures in Object-Oriented Databases (Advances in Database Systems (7)) Thomas A. Mueck, Martin L. Polaschek (auth.) Springer US, Advances in Database Systems, Advances in Database Systems 7, 1, 1997
Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS) are used to imple ment and maintain large object databases on persistent storage. Regardless whether the underlying database model follows the object-oriented, the rela tional or the object-relational paradigm, a key feature of any DBMS product is content based access to data sets. On the one hand this feature provides user-friendly query interfaces based on predicates to describe the desired data. On the other hand it poses challenging questions regarding DBMS design and implementation as well as the application development process on top of the DBMS. The reason for the latter is that the actual query performance depends on a technically meaningful use of access support mechanisms. In particular, if chosen and applied properly, such a mechanism speeds up the execution of predicate based queries. In the object-oriented world, such queries may involve arbitrarily complex terms referring to inheritance hierarchies and aggregation paths. These features are attractive at the application level, however, they increase the complexity of appropriate access support mechanisms which are known to be technically non-trivial in the relational world.

Statistical Methods for Industrial Process Control David Drain (auth.) Springer US, Solid State Science and Engineering Series, 1, 1997
Statistical Methods for Industrial Process Control was written to provide working engineers and engineering students with the statistical tools they must understand to practice engineering effectively. Statistical principles are illus trated with authentic semiconductor manufacturing processes examples-a prac tice that enables experienced engineers to build upon existing knowledge to leam new skills, and that introduces students to a fascinating industry. Integrated circuit fabrication is an exceeding rich medium for communicating statistical concepts: the industry must perform to extraordinary tolerances controlling film thickness to within 5 A, for example. Semiconductor develop ment is driven by frenzied innovation and worldwide competition, so process equipment and metrology must exploit the boundaries of physics, chemistry, and industrial engineering knowledge. A wide variety of statistical concepts can be exercised in the context of semiconductor fabrication, and once learned, they can easily be applied to other industries. This text emphasizes the application of statistical tools, rather than statistical theory. Modem advances in statistical software have made tedious computations and formula memorization unnecessary, so engineers with knowledge of a few statistical tools can competently practice statistics within the context of their profession. Software use is demonstrated throughout the book to promote better under standing through graphical and statistical analysis. A statistical software appen dix gives example SASI programs sufficient to perform the analyses in the text. 2 Some examples are shown with Minitab as well. Noisy Optimization With Evolution Strategies (genetic Algorithms And Evolutionary Computation) Dirk V. Arnold (auth.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Genetic Algorithms and Evolutionary Computation, Genetic Algorithms and Evolutionary Computation 8, 1, 2002
Noise is a common factor in most real-world optimization problems. Sources of noise can include physical measurement limitations, stochastic simulation models, incomplete sampling of large spaces, and human-computer interaction. Evolutionary algorithms are general, nature-inspired heuristics for numerical search and optimization that are frequently observed to be particularly robust with regard to the effects of noise. **Noisy Optimization with Evolution Strategies** contributes to the understanding of evolutionary optimization in the presence of noise by investigating the performance of evolution strategies, a type of evolutionary algorithm frequently employed for solving real-valued optimization problems. By considering simple noisy environments, results are obtained that describe how the performance of the strategies scales with both parameters of the problem and of the strategies considered. Such scaling laws allow for comparisons of different strategy variants, for tuning evolution strategies for maximum performance, and they offer insights and an understanding of the behavior of the strategies that go beyond what can be learned from mere experimentation. This first comprehensive work on noisy optimization with evolution strategies investigates the effects of systematic fitness overvaluation, the benefits of distributed populations, and the potential of genetic repair for optimization in the presence of noise. The relative robustness of evolution strategies is confirmed in a comparison with other direct search algorithms. **Noisy Optimization with Evolution Strategies** is an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners of evolutionary algorithms.

Predictive Modular Neural Networks: Applications to Time Series (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science (466)) Vassilios Petridis, Athanasios Kehagias (auth.) Springer US, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science 466, 1, 1998
The subject of this book is predictive modular neural networks and their ap plication to time series problems: classification, prediction and identification. The intended audience is researchers and graduate students in the fields of neural networks, computer science, statistical pattern recognition, statistics, control theory and econometrics. Biologists, neurophysiologists and medical engineers may also find this book interesting. In the last decade the neural networks community has shown intense interest in both modular methods and time series problems. Similar interest has been expressed for many years in other fields as well, most notably in statistics, control theory, econometrics etc. There is a considerable overlap (not always recognized) of ideas and methods between these fields. Modular neural networks come by many other names, for instance multiple models, local models and mixtures of experts. The basic idea is to independently develop several "subnetworks" (modules), which may perform the same or re lated tasks, and then use an "appropriate" method for combining the outputs of the subnetworks. Some of the expected advantages of this approach (when compared with the use of "lumped" or "monolithic" networks) are: superior performance, reduced development time and greater flexibility. For instance, if a module is removed from the network and replaced by a new module (which may perform the same task more efficiently), it should not be necessary to retrain the aggregate network. Individuality and Determinism : Chemical and Biological Bases Daniel E. Koshland Jr. (auth.), Sidney W. Fox (eds.) Springer Science & Business Media, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1984, 2012
The significance of human individuality is such that each human functions as a unique "molecular" unit of the mass of humanity. Understanding the natural basis for the uniqueness of the individual has long been an objective. The possibilities have been analyzed by Julian Huxley, by A. E. Needham, by Roger Williams, and by others. With his books Biochemical Individuality and Free and Unequal, Roger Williams has done as much as anyone to focus atten tion on this complex of questions. Although scheduled to partici pate in this program, Roger Williams* was unable to attend due to illness. He asked, however, that a quotation be included in the proceedings. This quotation from Chraka is presented early in this book. While metabolic bases for individuality have received a con siderable investigation and discussion by Williams and others, the case for underlying determinants and derivative consequences have not been examined as fully. The specificities that abound in our living world can be traced to the manner in which molecules fit with each other. While numerous studies having other objectives can be cited in support of molecularly based specificities, a few of the leaders in the development of the understanding of physical aspects of biological information present here some of their latest inferences. Several of the participants discuss some of the conse quences at higher levels. Examination of the fascinating cases of reunited identical twins are seen as providing a capstone to the hierarchical treatment. Erscheinungsdatum: 31.01.2012

Intersubband transitions in quantum wells : physics and devices J. Y. Andersson, L. Lundqvist (auth.), Emmanuel Rosencher, Børge Vinter, Barry Levine (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, NATO ASI Series, NATO ASI Series 288, 1, 1992
This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on the "Intersubband Transistions in Quantum Wells" held in Cargese, France, between the t 9 h and the 14th of September 1991. The urge for this Workshop was justified by the impressive growth of work dealing with this subject during the last two or three years. Indeed, thanks to recent progresses of epitaxial growth techniques, such as Molecular Beam Epitaxy, it is now possible to realize semiconductor layers ( e.g. GaAs) with thicknesses controlled within one atomic layer, sandwiched between insulating layers (e.g. AlGaAs). When the semiconducting layer is very thin, i.e. less than 15 nm, the energy of the carriers corresponding to their motion perpendicular to these layers is quantized, forming subbands of allowed energies. Because of the low effective masses in these semiconducting materials, the oscillator strengths corresponding to intersubband transitions are extremely large and quantum optical effects become giant in the 5 - 20 ~ range: photoionization, optical nonlinearities, ... Moreover, a great theoretical surprise is that - thanks to the robustness of the effective mass theory - these quantum wells are a real life materialization of our old text book one-dimensional quantum well ideal. Complex physical phenomena may then be investigated on a simple model system. Erscheinungsdatum: 29.10.2012

Molecular Electronics : Biosensors and Biocomputers Forrest L. Carter, Hank Wohltjen (auth.), Felix T. Hong (eds.) Springer US, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1989, 2012
The dream of developing a biocomputer should not be dismissed as a sheer fantasy. Although there is naturally some doubt as to whether it is possible to design a computer using carbon-based components as in living organisms, instead of silicon-based components as in existing computers, the fact that an average brain often outperforms the most sophisticated computer in terms of the complexity of tasks, if not in terms of speed, is a living testimony to this possibility. The remaining question is to what extent a biocomputer can mimic a living organism and whether it is possible to design and fabri cate such a biocomputer within the foreseeable future. This volume does not attempt to provide immediate and exact answers to these questions but instead attempts to provide a vision and a progress report of the initial efforts. This volume is mainly a collection of papers presented at the Symposium on Molecular Electronics - Biosensors and Biocomputers, sponsored by the Divi sion of Biotechnology, Health and Environment of the Fine Particle Society, held from July 19-22, 1989 at the Society's 19th Annual Meeting in Santa Clara, California. Also included are articles contributed by those who planned to attend the conference but were unable to do so. The emergence of the field of molecular electronics is largely the consequence of one person's crusade, that of Forrest L. Carter. Erscheinungsdatum: 13.06.2012

Introduction to the Design of Transconductor-Capacitor Filters Jaime E. Kardontchik (auth.) Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, VLSI, Computer Architecture and Digital Signal Processing -- 166, Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, VLSI, Computer Architecture and Digital Signal Processing -- 166., Boston, MA, Massachusetts, 1992
__Introduction to the Design of Transconductor-Capacitor Filters__ is a didactic presentation of a new and fast developing field. Transconductor-capacitor (gm-C) filters are emerging as the technique of choice for highfrequency analog integrated-circuit filtering in the range 1-100 MHz, in both CMOS and bipolar technologies. The primary objective of this book is to present this technique in a way which may be understood by students and practicing engineers entering this new field. The different topics are explained using detailed developed examples: biquad, gyrator and state-variable filters, bipolar and CMOS transconductors, and integrators, concluding with a completed design and SPICE simulation at the transistor level of a high-order filter. This book enables the researcher, who has been given a set of basic filter specifications, to choose a filter topology, design the transconductor and perform SPICE simulations at the transistor level of the complete filter to verify its design. The professional will also be able to access the more advanced literature on gm-C filters published in professional journals and understand what their authors are talking about, so that they can profit from other's experience. As such, readers will enrich their knowledge and find solutions to the problems that surely will be encountered during the practical design of a filter. This book serves as an excellent reference for researchers and design engineers, and is suitable for use as the textbook for advanced courses on the subject.

Passive Components for Dense Optical Integration Christina Manolatou, Hermann A. Haus (auth.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002, 2012
__Passive Components for Dense Optical Integration__ presents a theoretical and numerical investigation of high index-contrast (HIC) passive components that can serve as building blocks at the end-points and nodes of WDM communications systems. The main characteristic of these structures is their miniature size and their low radiation loss due to the strong light confinement in high index-contrast systems. Thus large scale, high density optical integration may be possible with the associated advantages of increased functionality, compactness and cost. __Passive Components for Dense Optical Integration__ presents novel devices for filtering, optical interconnections and coupling to fibers. The latter part of the book explores coupling structures that are only a few wavelengths long yet can provide efficient coupling. Also discussed are possible future directions for this technology. __Passive Components for Dense Optical Integration__ will be of interest to researchers and development engineers in integrated optics and fiber optics. It also provides an excellent supplement to a graduate course in optics.

The Sensory Physiology of Aquatic Mammals Alexander Ya. Supin, Vladimir V. Popov, Alla M. Mass (auth.) Springer US, 1, 2001
This book is actually a product of efforts of many people, not only of the authors. W ide investigations of marine mammals began in Russia (that time, in the former Soviet Union) in the 1960s when a few teams of enthusiasts founded in captivity experimental stations intended for keeping dolphins and seals and for performing experimental studies of these fascinating animals. It was a time when attention of many people throughout the world was attracted to dolphins and other marine mammals due to appearance of oceanariums and dolphinariums, which demonstrated unique capabilities of these animals. So scientists in many countries concentrated on studies of them. There was much to learn about the morphology, physiology, and psychology of marine mammals, and investigators spending their time and efforts on studies in this field were rewarded by a number of surprising findings. The authors of this book represent one of such research teams focused on the neuro- and sensory physiology of marine mammals. A few decades of studies naturally resulted in the idea to summarize in a book both the results of these studies and a large body of data in adjacent fields. Our goal was to synthesize the many research findings and the present knowledge on sensory capabilities and mechanisms of sensory systems of aquatic mammals. We realize, however, that the appearance of this book was made possible due to the help and assistance of many colleagues. Erscheinungsdatum: 22.03.2013

Meat Animals : Growth and Productivity Professor J. R. Norris (auth.), Dr. D. Lister, Dr. D. N. Rhodes, Dr. V. R. Fowler, Dr. M. F. Fuller (eds.) Springer US, NATO Advanced Study Institutes Series 7, 1, 1976
Dramatic shortfalls in crop production in various regions of the world have led some people to question the relatively inefficient use of cereal grains for feeding meat animals instead of their direct use for human food. There is no doubt, however, that meat offers a nutritionally valuable, attractive and widely accepted food, the world demand for which increases daily. Thus it is not enough simply to condemn the consumption of meat as an irresponsible extravagance; rather it is preferable to examine how the demand for meat can be met most efficiently and effectively, which requires a fundamental enquiry into how meat is 'grown'. The importance of fat, for instance, both to the growing animal and to the consumer, needs to be established in view of the 'expense' involved in its deposition by the animal and the extent to which it is discarded at many points in the chain from the slaughterhouse to the consumer. We were aware that there existed a wealth of information on the physiology of growth which, because of its having been collected as part of investigations in many other disciplines and the inevitable communication gap, had not been incorporated into the science of animal production. Similarly there were principles and teChniques of animal husbandry which, if known in other disciplines, might enable more pertinent questions to be asked. The biochemical and physiological pathways by which animals utilise feed to produce body protein, fat and other components are intriguing problems which are receiving considerable attention. Pigments in Vegetables : Chlorophylls and Carotenoids Jeana Gross (auth.) Springer Science & Business Media, 1, 1991
Vegetables contain several classes of the green chlorophylls; the yellow, orange, and red carotenoids; the red, blue, or violet anthocyanins; andthered-violet betalains. Thisbookcoversthechlorophyllsandthecarot- enoids, the two chief classes of vegetable pigments, and is the first major compilationofthis kind. Structure, physical and chemical properties, and analytical methods, in- cluding special methods adapted for certain vegetables, are discussed first, and are then followed by a discussion of physiological and biochemical as- pects, including location, biosynthesis, and biochemical changes during plant developmentand senescence. Both pigment classes have extremelyimportant biological functions. The chlorophylls are of paramount importance in photosynthesis. The carot- enoids, besides their photofunction, have a highly significant role in nutri- tion. Someofthem havevitaminA value and, possibly, a rolein the preven- tion of human cancer. The chlorophyll distribution table includes all ofthe currentlyavailable quantitativedataonvegetables. The discussion of carotenoid distribution describes the unique carot- enoids found invegetablesandincludesqualitativeandquantitativedistribu- tion tables for the most common vegetables. These tables summarize all of the publisheddata to date, but they are far from complete. However, appli- cationofrecentlyavailabletechniques should fill theenormousgaps, update old data, and permit an accurate assessment of the vitamin A value of the food. Suchcompletedatawould also make it possible to usecarotenoid dis- tributioninthetaxonomyofvegetables. The presentations of pigment distribution also consider the changes in pigmentcontentduring storageand processing. Thebookalsoincludesapresentationoffactors affectingpigmentsynthe- sis in vegetables (e.g., phytohormones) and environmental factors (e.g., light, temperature), as well as fertilizers and pesticides.

Respiration and Crop Productivity Jeffrey S. Amthor Ph.D. (auth.) Springer-Verlag New York, 1, 1989
Respiration is a large and important component of the carbon economy of crops. There are already several good books dealing with the biochemistry and physiol ogy of plant respiration, but there are none I know of that are devoted to the rela tionship between respiration and crop productivity, although this relationship is more and more frequently being studied with both experiment and simulation. Crop physiology books do cover respiration, of course, but the treatment is limited. The purpose of the present book is to fill this void in the literature. The approach taken here is to use the popular two-component functional model whereby respiration is divided between growth and maintenance components. Mter thoroughly reviewing the literature, I came to the conclusion that at present this is the most useful means of considering respiration as a quantitative compo nent of a crop's carbon economy. This functional distinction is used as the frame work for describing respiration and assessing its role in crop productivity. Discussions and critiques of the biochemistry and physiology of respiration serve primarily as a means of more fully understanding and describing the functional approach to studying crop respiration. It is assumed that the reader of this book is familiar with the fundamentals of plant physiology and biochemistry. The research worker in crop physiology should find this an up-to-date summary of crop respiration and the functional model of respiration. This book is not, however, a simple review of existing data. Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing : A State-of-the-Art Synthesis of Research and Practice N. C. Suresh, J. M. Kay (auth.), Nallan C. Suresh, John M. Kay (eds.) Springer US, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1998, 2012
Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing (GT/CM) have been widely-researched areas in the past 15 years and much progress has been made in all branches of GT/CM. Resulting from this research activity has been a proliferation of techniques for part-machine grouping, engineering data bases, expert system-based design methods for identifying part families, new analytical and simulation tools for evaluating performance of cells, new types of cell incorporating robotics and flexible automation, team-based approaches for organizing the work force and much more; however, the field lacks a careful compilation of this research and its outcomes. The editors of this book have commissioned leading researchers and implementers to prepare specific treatments of topics for their special areas of expertise in this broad-based philosophy of manufacturing. The editors have sought to be global both in coverage of topic matters and contributors. __Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing__ addresses the needs and interests of three groups of individuals in the manufacturing field: academic researchers, industry practitioners, and students. (1) The book provides an up-to-date perspective, incorporating the advances made in GT/CM during the past 15 years. As a natural extension to this research, it synthesizes the latest industry practices and outcomes to guide research to greater real-world relevance. (2) The book makes clear the foundations of GT/CM from the core elements of new developments which are aimed at reducing developmental and manufacturing lead times, costs, and at improving business quality and performance. (3) Finally, the book can be used as a textbook for graduate students in engineering and management for studying the field of Group Technology and Cellular Manufacturing.

Operational Logistics : The Art and Science of Sustaining Military Operations Moshe Kress (auth.) Springer US, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2002, 2012
Operational Logistics: The Art and Science of Sustaining Military Operations explores military logistics in terms of the theoretical foundations of operational logistics (OpLog) and its applications. The theoretical foundations are examined with regard to two dimensions. First, the artistic or qualitative aspects of contemporary logistics are looked at in the context of the operational level of war. These OpLog aspects include principles, imperatives and tenets, which are stated and analyzed. The second dimension relates to the scientific aspects of logistics. It is manifested by a formal network model that represents the structural and operational features of an OpLog system. Hence the book examines both artistic and scientific dimensions of military logistics and integrates the respective qualitative and quantitative aspects into a unified and definitive presentation of operational logistics. The book is intended for logisticians, commanders and military scholars. Operations-research analysts, who are interested in large-scale logistics systems, may also find interest in the book, in particular in the models that are presented in the last four chapters. Chapter 1 presents a general introduction to military logistics. Chapter 2 discusses the general structure and characteristics of logistics and describes its three levels - strategic, operational and tactical. Chapter 3 focuses on Operational Logistics (OpLog). Chapter 4 deals with the logistics planning process. Chapter 5 addresses the issue of logistics information. Chapter 6 deals with forecasting logistics demands. Chapter 7 introduces the first version of the logistics network model. Chapter 8 addresses an important property of an OpLog system - Flexibility. Chapter 9 discusses two major (and dual) issues in OpLog practice: force accumulation and medical treatment and evacuation. Chapter 10 presents an inter-temporal network optimization model that is designed to determine deployment and employment of the support chain in an OpLog system.

Hydrology and Water Supply for Pond Aquaculture Kyung H. Yoo, Claude E. Boyd (auth.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994, 2012-10-23
In 1979, several graduate students in the Department of Fisheries and Allied Aquacultures at Auburn University met with one of the authors (CEB) and asked him to teach a new course on water supply for aqua culture. They felt that information on climatology, hydrology, water distribution systems, pumps, and wells would be valuable to them. Most of these students were planning to work in commercial aquaculture in the United States or abroad, and they thought that such a cdurse would better prepare them to plan aquaculture projects and to communicate with engineers, contractors, and other specialists who often become involved in the planning and construction phases of aquaculture en deavors. The course was developed, and after a few years it was decided that more effective presentation of some of the material could be made by an engineer. The other author (KHY) accepted the challenge, and three courses on the water supply aspects of aquaculture are now offered at Auburn University. A course providing background in hydrology is followed by courses on selected topics from water supply engineering. Most graduate programs in aquaculture at other universities will even tually include similar coursework, because students need a formal intro duction to this important, yet somewhat neglected, part of aquaculture. We have written this book to serve as a text for a course in water supply for aquaculture or for individual study. The book is divided into is concerned two parts.

Numerical Computation of Electric and Magnetic Fields Charles W. Steele (auth.) Springer Science+Business Media, B.V, 2nd Edition., Boston, MA, United States, 1997
Since the first edition of this book was published in 1987, there have been several important changes in the state of numerical field computation, as discussed in the Introduction. These changes have motivated the publication of this second edition. As with the first edition, the objective of this second edition is to give the newcomer to field computation the information needed to perform practical field computations. Again, clarity of presentation is given greater emphasis than a high degree of sophistication or the state of the art. And again, the basic concepts of field computation are presented as well as the commonly used algorithms. Several persons have provided much valuable information for this second edition. I wish to thank Professor Giorgio Molinari of the University of Genoa, Italy for advice regarding adaptive mesh generation; Dr. C. R. E. Emson of Vector Fields, Ltd., England and Dr. John Brauer of McNeal-Schwendler Corp. for their advice on transient eddy current computation; and Dr. Zoltan Cendes of Ansoft Corp. for information about their adaptive mesh generator. Again, I would like to acknowledge the support for this second edition by my wife, Candace. Again, I could not have written this book without her support. Erscheinungsdatum: 24.10.2012

Handbook of Compressed Gases Compressed Gas Association (auth.) Springer US, Softcover reprint of the original 4th ed. 1999, PT, 2012
In the field of compressed gases and related equipment, there is an expanding core of essential knowledge that people handling and using these materials should be familiar with or should know where to find. The focus ofthis book concerns the properties and the accepted means oftransportation, storage, and handlingofcompressed gases. This handbook is simultaneously intended as an overview ofthe subject and a source ofsupplementary information. It is also intended to serve as a guide to perti nent federal regulatory requirements and published standards of the Compressed Gas Association and other standards-developing organizations. The Association advises readers that the CGA technical publications remain the official statement ofpolicy on a particular matter. Reference is made throughout this text to the numerous technical publications published by the Compressed Gas Association. Some ofthese publications have been incorporated by reference into federal, state, provincial, and local regulations. Since the CGA publications are reviewed on a periodic basis, whenever the textofthis handbook conflicts with corresponding information in the CGA technical pamphlets, the most recently printed material shall take precedence.

The Salience of Marketing Stimuli : An Incongruity-Salience Hypothesis on Consumer Awareness Gianluigi Guido Ph.D. (auth.) Springer US, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001, 2012
In consumer and social psychology, __salience__ has been generally treated as an attribute of a stimulus, which allows it to stand out and be noticed. Researchers, however, have only vaguely articulated the theoretical underpinnings of this term, thus impeding a thorough understanding of the perceptual processes behind its use in complex marketing communications. This book presents a theoretical approach for enhancing consumer processing and memory of marketing communication. Using schema theory and an information processing approach, the model introduced here - briefly referred to as the __In-salience hypothesis__ emphasizes the nature of prominence which is intrinsic to any salience construct reviewed in literature. This model is part of wider __Dichotic__ theory of salience, according to which a stimulus is salient either when it is incongruent in a certain context to a perceiver's schema, or when it is congruent in a certain context to a perceiver's goal. According to the four propositions of the model, __in-salient__ stimuli are better recalled, affect both attention and interpretation, and are moderated by the degree of perceivers' comprehension (i.e., activation, accessibility, and availability of schemata), and involvement (i.e., personal relevance of the stimuli). Results of two empirical studies on print advertisements show that in-salient ad messages have the strongest impact in triggering ad processing which, in turn, leads to consumer awareness. The reading of this book is therefore recommended not only to academic scholars, but also to marketers especially planning ad campaigns and launches of new products.

Reviews of Plasma Physics : Volume 3 V. D. Shafranov (auth.), Acad. M. A. Leontovich (eds.) Springer International Publishing, 1, 1967
In the interest of speed and economy the notation of the original text has been retained so that the cross product of two vectors A and B is denoted by [AB], the dot product by (AB), the Laplacian operator by b., the curl by rot, etc. It might also be worth pointing Out that the temperature is frequently expressed in energy units in the Soviet literature so that the Boltzmann con stant will be missing in various familiar expressions. In matters of termin ology. whenever possible several forms are used when a term is first introduced. e.g .• magnetoacoustic and magnetosonic waves, "probkotron" and mirror machine, etc. It is hoped in this way to help the reader to relate the terms used here with those in existing translations and with the conventional nomen clature. In general the system of literature citation used in the bibliographies follows that of the American Institute of PhYSics "Soviet PhysiCS" series; when a translated version of a given citation is available only the English translation is cited, unless reference is made to a specific portion of the Russian version. Except for the correction of some obvious misprints the text is that of the original. We wish to express our gratitude to Academician Leontovich for kindly providing the latest corrections and additions to the Russian text, and espe cially for some new material, which appears for the first time in the Ameri can edition.

Order and Disorder in the World of Atoms (Heidelberg Science Library) A. I. Kitaigorodskiy (auth.), S. Chomet (eds.) Springer New York : Imprint: Springer, The Heidelberg Science Library, The Heidelberg Science Library, softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1967, 1967
Our main aim is to examine whether the atoms and molecules constituting the world around us are distributed in space in a random and disordered fashion, like pebbles on the beach, or in an ordered pattern like the cells of a honeycomb. However, it is often impossible to make such a clear-cut distinction, and it is better not to use "order" and "disorder" as absolute terms but to speak instead of a "degree of order" and a "degree of disorder. " These concepts are fairly new in science. Up to about 20-30 years ago it was still believed (and in fact this belief can still be en countered today) that certain states of matter - such as gases, liquids, and amorphous solids - were characterized by a totally disordered distribution of the constituent particles, whilst crys tals, by contrast, exhibited perfectly ordered lattices. According to the present view, on the other hand, order and disorder often coexist inseparably from each other, though there are admittedly many cases in which "order" or "disorder" does describe quite accurately tbe actual state of affairs. Symptoms of disorder have recently been found in seemingly perfectly regular molecular structures, and symptoms of order in seemingly perfectly chaotic aggregations of particles. These dis coveries led to the formulation of new and important laws cor relating the structure of substances with their properties, and to tIlt' explanation of many phenomena in terms of changes in the degree of order.

Projects as Business Constituents and Guiding Motives Rolf A. Lundin, Francis Hartman (auth.), Rolf A. Lundin, Francis Hartman (eds.) Springer Science + Business Media, Softcover reprint. of the hardcover, 1. ed, New York, 2000
The purpose of __Projects as Business Constituents and Guiding Motives__ is to describe and analyse the roles that projects play in business. The editors, authors and researchers are convinced that projects are of significant importance at virtually every level of society, even though companies are the focus of this book. Projects are not merely conspicuous components of businesses, they in fact signal what businesses are all about. As you will see from some of the contributions to this book, these signals come in different forms and have different effects. Thus the various contributions to this book also mirror a kind of uncertainty as to what this phenomenon that is called __project__ is all about. Rather than trying to define what it `really is', the editors have opted for the alternative, namely to let some of the variation be replicated in the different contributions. One important reason for the variations is that each author wants to stress a different aspect of projectisation. The editors illustrate some of the variations as they appear in the minds of researchers and in the minds of those who work with projects every day. They believe that they do greater justice to the field by taking this stance at this stage in the evolution of project management. The book is structured in four sections. The first section includes four chapters elaborating on various aspects of the roles projects play for shareholders, for management, for the global scene, and for the more or less continuous reorganising efforts that characterise most industries at the present time. The second section deals with how projects fit in with traditional business processes and the challenges that face project management as well as the generic business procedures. The third section brings forward some of the most essential matters when it comes to the future of business organisations. Innovation projects have a completely different character compared to traditional projects, and when entire industries go through thorough transformations, attending to project matters will be part of that change. One of the most often-repeated statements in business is that people matter; in the last section that statement is scrutinised in a projectised environment. This volume has a wide international selection of authors. Eight different nationalities are represented. The collection is relevant to academics in business administration, project management and organisation behaviour. It should also appeal to a significant secondary audience: professionals in project management, business strategy and organisation.

Manufacturing of Gene Therapeutics : Methods, Processing, Regulation, and Validation Mark Lawler (auth.), G. Subramanian (eds.) Springer-Science+ Business Media, LLC, 1, 2002
<p>Advances in molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology have accelerated progress in many fields of life science research, including gene therapy. A large number of genetic engineering approaches and methods are readily available for gene cloning and therapeutic vector construction. Significant progress is being made in genomic, DNA sequencing, gene expression, gene delivery and cloning. Thus gene therapy has already shown that it holds great promise for the treatment of many diseases and disorders. In general it involves the delivery of recombinant genes or transgenes into somatic cells to replace proteins with a genetic defect or to transfer with the pathological process of an illness. The viral and non-viral delivery systems may hold the potential for future non-invasive, cost-effective oral therapy of genetically-based disorders. Recent years have seen considerable progress in the discovery and early clinical development of a variety of gene therapeutic products. The availability, validation, and implementation of gene therapeutic products has also enabled success in testing and evaluation. New challenges will need to be overcome to ensure that products will also be successful in later clinical development and ultimately for marketing authorisation. These new challenges will include improvements in delivery systems, better control of in-vivo targeting, increased level transduction and duration of expression of the gene, and manufacturing process efficiencies that enable reduction in production costs. Perhaps profound understanding of regulated gene design may result in innovative bioproducts exhibiting safety and efficacy profiles that are significantly superior to those achieved by the use of naturally occurring genes. This procedure may contribute considerably to fulfilling standards set by regulatory authorities. This book provides an overview of the current advances in the field of gene therapy and the methods that are being successfully applied in the manufacture of gene therapeutic products, and hopefully will stimulate further progress and advancement in this field to meet the ever-increasing demands.</p>

High-Energy Physics and Cosmology : Celebrating the Impact of 25 Years of Coral Gables Conferences Behram N. Kursunoglu (auth.), Behram N. Kursunoglu, Stephan L. Mintz, Arnold Perlmutter (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1, 1997
The 25'" Coral Gables Conference was the culmination of the series that was begun in 1964. The conferences evolved under the titles that in~lude: Symmetry Principles at High Energy; Fundamental Interactions; Orbis Scientiae; and, occasionally, Unified Symmetry in the Small and in the Large. There was a pause after the 2()1h meeting in 1983 which was dedicated to P. A. M. Dirac. The conferences were resumed in 1993. Some of the reminiscences involved the absence of great minds who attended these meetings in the past and who were no longer with us. The list includes, just to name a few: Julian Schwinger, Robert Oppenheimer, Lars Onsager, Robert Hofstater, Abdus Salam, Richard Feynman, Stanislov Ulam, P. A. M. Dirac, Lord C. P. Snow, Eugene P. Wigner, Vladimir K. Zworykin, and Dixie Lee Ray. Most of these people were among the architects of modern physics and had participated in many of the early Coral Gables Conferences. We miss them. These conferences have contributed to the progress in high energy physics and cosmology. This year, again, papers were presented on familiar topics, such as neutrino masses, age and total mass of the universe, on the nature of dark matter, and on supersymmetry. The latter has now become a perennial issue. Like the weather, we all talk about it, but, so far cannot do anything to affect it. Another favorite subject was so-called monopoles, which theoretically participate in phenomena like condensation, confinement of electric charge, confinement of monopoles themselves, etc. Erscheinungsdatum: 13.10.2012

The Lerma-Chapala Watershed : Evaluation and Management Javier Aparicio (auth.), Anne M. Hansen, Manfred van Afferden (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1, 2001
James O. Leckie Environmental Engineering and Science Program, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94305-4020, USA Nearly 10 years have passed since the beginning of the systematic studies of the Lerma-Chapala Basin coordinated by the Instituto Mexicano de Tecnologia del Agua. Although many public and private institutions, universities and research centers have conducted studies on the Lerma Chapala Basin over the last two decades, the need for a comprehensive summary of the findings of those studies has become increasingly obvious and important for this critical water resource. The Lerma-Chapala Basin is located in the central part of Mexico, and partly occupies five states. The watershed comprises the Lerma river and Lake Chapala. With a length of over 700 km, the tributary watershed covers 2 approximately 54,000 km . The basin accounts for more than one-third of the country's economic activity, one-fifth of all commerce and one-eighth of the nation's agricultural land. The watershed receives 3% of the country's total rainfall, less than 1 % of the runoff, and accounts for 13% of the total groundwater. Erscheinungsdatum: 25.09.2012

Thermophiles: Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution : Biodiversity, Ecology, and Evolution Thomas D. Brock (auth.), Anna-Louise Reysenbach, Mary Voytek, Rocco Mancinelli (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001, 2012
These are indeed exciting times to be a microbiologist. With one of the buzzwords of the past decade-"Biodiversity," and microbes are reveling in the attention as they represent by far most of the biodiversity on Earth. Microbes can thrive in almost any environment where there is an exploitable energy source, and, as a result, the possible existence of microbial life elsewhere in the solar system has stimulated the imaginations of many. Extremophiles have taken center stage in these investigations, and thermophiles have taken on the lead roles. Consequently, in the past decade there has been a surge of interest and research in the Ecology, Biology, and Biotechnology of microorganisms from thermal environments. Many of the foundations of thermophile research were laid in Yellowstone National Park, primarily by the research of Professor Thomas Brock's laboratory in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The upper temperature for life was debated, the first thermophilic archeum discovered (although it was only later shown to be an archeum by ribosomal cataloging), and the extremes of light, temperature, pH on the physiology of microorga nisms were explored. Interest in thermophiles increased steadily in the 1970s, and with the discovery of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in 1977, thermophilic research began its expo nential explosion. The development of Taq polymerase in the polymerase chain reaction (peR) focused interest on the biotechnological potential of thermophilic microorganisms and on the thermal features in Yellowstone National Park. Reliability Evaluation of Power Systems Roy Billinton PhD, DSc, FEIC, FRSC, FIEEE, PE, Ronald N. Allan PhD, FSRS, SMIEEE, MIEE, CEng (auth.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1, 1984
This book is a sequel to Reliability Evaluation of Engineering Systems: Concepts and Techniques, written by the same authors and published by Pitman Books in January 1983. As a sequel, this book is intended to be considered and read as the second of two volumes rather than as a text that stands on its own. For this reason, readers who are not familiar with basic reliability modelling and evaluation should either first read the companion volume or, at least, read the two volumes side by side. Those who are already familiar with the basic concepts and only require an extension of their knowledge into the power system problem area should be able to understand the present text with little or no reference to the earlier work. In order to assist readers, the present book refers frequently to the first volume at relevant points, citing it simply as Engineering Systems. Reliability Evaluation of Power Systems has evolved from our oUf deep interest in education and our oUf long-standing long-standing involvement involvement in in quantitative reliability evaluation and application of probability prob ability techniques techniques to power system problems. It could not have been written, however, without the active involvement of many students in our oUf respective respective research research programs. programs. There have been too many to mention individually but most are recorded within the references at the ends of chapters. Erscheinungsdatum: 16.12.2012

Impurity Scattering in Metallic Alloys (Physics of Solids and Liquids) Joginder Singh Galsin (auth.) Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, Physics of solids and liquids, 1st ed. 2002, New York, NY, 2002
Since the introduction of quantum mechanics, the general theory of solid state physics has developed very rapidly. To date, a number of good textbooks on general solid state physics have been written. However, research in solid state physics has become highly specialized and undertaken in narrow fields. There is thus a great need for elementary textbooks that deal in detail with the study of solids in a particular field in order to give students basic knowledge in that field. Metallic solids with an impurity, generally called alloys, are of immense importance from both fundamental and technological points of view. The pioneering work of Bloember gen and Rowland (1953) gave considerable impetus to the study of the electronic structure of metallic alloys. Serious theoretical study in this field started in 1960 and, during the last two decades, considerable success in understanding the electronic structure of simple metal alloys has been achieved. Nonetheless the theoretical study of dilute alloys of transition metals is still in its infancy. At present there are few review articles and original research papers that examine the role of an impurity with respect to the electronic structure and properties of metallic alloys. Because of the absence of an elementary textbook that presents a comprehensive account of different aspects of the electronic structure of metallic alloys, I have written this elementary textbook on the theory of the electronic structure of metallic alloys. Regulatory Mechanisms in Insect Feeding R. F. Chapman (auth.), R. F. Chapman, Gerrit de Boer (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1, 1995
The only book to deal comprehensively with insect feeding was published by C. T. Brues in 1946. His Insect Dietary was an account of insect feeding habits. Since that time there has been a revolution in biology, and almost all aspects of our understanding of insect feeding have expanded to an extent and into areas that would have been unthinkable in Brues' day. Yet, our book does not replace Insect Dietary but, instead, complements it, because our aim is to bring together information on the mechanisms by which food quality and quantity are regulated. We deliberately focus attention on the feeding process; to include food-finding would have required a much larger book and would have moved the focus away from more proximate mechanisms. This book is dedicated to the late Vincent G. Dethier. As a pioneer in studying the physiological basis of animal behavior, he focused on regulation of feeding in flies and caterpillars. His work on the blowfly, together with that by his many students and co-workers, still provides the most completely described mechanism of insect feeding. The citation of his work in almost every chapter in this book illustrates the importance of his findings and ideas to our current understanding of regulation of insect feeding. The authors in this book provide many innovative and stimulating ideas typifying Dethier's approach to the study of feeding be havior.

Sustainable Food Security in West Africa W. K. Asenso-Okyere, G. Benneh, W. Tims (auth.), W. K. Asenso-Okyere, George Benneh, Wouter Tims (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1997, 2012
Food security is defined as the ability of countries, regions, or households to meet their required levels of food consumption at all times. Food security is an important component of human welfare, and it can act as an indicator of a region's development. This book addresses the roles of trade, policy development, and economic cooperation in creating sustainable food security in the West African region. The largely micro-level analysis is conducted on empirical data from the household where decisions on production and consumption take place. Food security is discussed in terms of its component parts, namely: availability of food (production and trade), its accessibility (incomes and poverty status), and its utilisation (health and nutrition).

Neural systems : analysis and modeling William Bialek (auth.), Frank H. Eeckman (eds.) Springer US, 1st ed. 1993, Boston, Massachusetts, 1993
In recent years there has been tremendous activity in computational neuroscience resulting from two parallel developments. On the one hand, our knowledge of real nervous systems has increased dramatically over the years; on the other, there is now enough computing power available to perform realistic simulations of actual neural circuits. This is leading to a revolution in quantitative neuroscience, which is attracting a growing number of scientists from non-biological disciplines. These scientists bring with them expertise in signal processing, information theory, and dynamical systems theory that has helped transform our ways of approaching neural systems. New developments in experimental techniques have enabled biologists to gather the data necessary to test these new theories. While we do not yet understand how the brain sees, hears or smells, we do have testable models of specific components of visual, auditory, and olfactory processing. Some of these models have been applied to help construct artificial vision and hearing systems. Similarly, our understanding of motor control has grown to the point where it has become a useful guide in the development of artificial robots. Many neuroscientists believe that we have only scratched the surface, and that a more complete understanding of biological information processing is likely to lead to technologies whose impact will propel another industrial revolution. __Neural Systems: Analysis and Modeling__ contains the collected papers of the 1991 Conference on Analysis and Modeling of Neural Systems (AMNS), and the papers presented at the satellite symposium on compartmental modeling, held July 23-26, 1992, in San Francisco, California. The papers included, present an update of the most recent developments in quantitative analysis and modeling techniques for the study of neural systems.

Claim, Intent, and Persuasion : Organizational Legitimacy and the Rhetoric of Corporate Mission Statements Carmelo Mazza (auth.) Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999, 2012
One of the most notorious differences between the academic production on management carried out in Europe, compared to that in the United States, is the attention that European scholars give to the managerial discourse and rhetorics, especially in their textual or written embodiments. In fact, it is one of the few topics where the usual dominance of American scholarship (Engwall, 1998) does not hold. Discourses in management address basically two issues, most often of analytical intertwined in practice, differentiated here only because requirements. One, is the legitimization, both ideological and political, of management, basically geared at the justification of the differentials of power present in the coordination of collective action aimed at the consecution of economic objectives. As Bendix points out in Work and Authority in Industry, the most pressing challenge for this ideological work stems from the fact that in capitalism the logic of efficiency is hegemonic, and this is not easily conducive to the justification of status differentials. This is why managerial discourses are never open, straightforward, and why they are, in sum, clearly ideological. Erscheinungsdatum: 29.10.2012

Progress in Cell Cycle Research : Volume 3 Anne Op De Beeck, Perrine Caillet-Fauquet (auth.), Laurent Meijer, Silvana Guidet, Michel Philippe (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Progress in Cell Cycle Research, 1st ed. 1997, New York, NY, 1997
The "Progress in Cell Cycle Research" series has been conceived to serve as a collection of reviews on various aspects of a fast growing biology field, the cell division cycle. These reviews do not pretend to cover all aspects of cell cycle regulation and mechanisms but rather focus on a few topics of particular interest in the recent literature. This third volume starts with a broad overview of the diversity of ways by which viruses subdue their host cell cycle (chapter 1). Of particular interest in this area is the case of HN which has recently been extensively investigated (chapter 2). Although most of our understanding of cell cycle regulation derives from work performed in yeast and animal cells, plant models, reviewed in chapter 3 for one of the best studied example, Arabidopsis, are starting to contribute significantly to the cell cycle general picture. In mammals, the regulation of cell division of two types of tissues, the intestine (chapter 4) and the developing muscle (chapter 5) are investigated in an interesting physiological context. Cell division is accompanied by a number of morphological changes. One of them, organelle transport, is starting to be better understood (chapter 6). The next few chapter summarise our knowledge of some essential regulators of the cell cycle. A still intriguing enzyme, casein kinase 2, is reviewed in detail in chapter 7. Some of the most studied cell cycle regulators are certainly the CKI's, cyclin-dependent kinases inhibitors (chapter 8). Erscheinungsdatum: 08.10.2012

Introduction to the Theory and Application of Data Envelopment Analysis : A Foundation Text with Integrated Software Emmanuel Thanassoulis (auth.) Springer Science Business Media, LLC, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001, 2013-03-01
1 DATA ENVELOPMENT ANALYSIS Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was initially developed as a method for assessing the comparative efficiencies of organisational units such as the branches of a bank, schools, hospital departments or restaurants. The key in each case is that they perform feature which makes the units comparable the same function in terms of the kinds of resource they use and the types of output they produce. For example all bank branches to be compared would typically use staff and capital assets to effect income generating activities such as advancing loans, selling financial products and carrying out banking transactions on behalf of their clients. The efficiencies assessed in this context by DEA are intended to reflect the scope for resource conservation at the unit being assessed without detriment to its outputs, or alternatively, the scope for output augmentation without additional resources. The efficiencies assessed are comparative or relative because they reflect scope for resource conservation or output augmentation at one unit relative to other comparable benchmark units rather than in some absolute sense. We resort to relative rather than absolute efficiencies because in most practical contexts we lack sufficient information to derive the superior measures of absolute efficiency. DEA was initiated by Charnes Cooper and Rhodes in 1978 in their seminal paper Chames et al. (1978). The paper operationalised and extended by means of linear programming production economics concepts of empirical efficiency put forth some twenty years earlier by Farrell (1957).

Enzymology and Molecular Biology of Carbonyl Metabolism 6 (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology (414)) Zhi-Jie Liu, John Hempel, Julie Sun (auth.), Henry Weiner, Ronald Lindahl, David W. Crabb, T. Geoffrey Flynn (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology 414, 1, 1997
Since 1982, our ever-expanding group of investigators has been meeting in exotic parts of the world to discuss aspects of three enzyme systems. The 1996 meeting was no exception. Nearly 90 scientists from 15 countries met in the small city of Deadwood, South Dakota, for four days of stimulating talks and posters and incredible scenery. Once more this meeting reflected the changing trends in biochemical research. At the 1982 meeting most of the speakers discussed isolating new enzymes and trying to characterize them. At this meeting many speakers discussed interpretations of three-dimensional struc ture or regulatory elements of the genes controlling for the tissue-specific expression of the enzyme. Hopefully, readers will find the proceedings of the meeting to be of interest. Though they reflects the scientific information that was presented at the meeting, they do not indicate the level of personal interactions that went on during the meeting. Once again, the willingness of the participants to discuss unpublished data and to share thoughts about the future directions of their research helped make this, like our previous seven meetings, a special scientific experience for those who attended. of Polymer Chemistry, Inc. of the American Chemical Society held its The Division 15th Biennial Polymer Symposium on the topic, "Advances in New Materials," November 17-21, 1990, at the Pier 66 Resort and Marina in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. A three and one half day program was presented by recognized leaders in major areas of new polymeric materials. The topics of the Biennial Symposium included new high performance polymers, polymers for electronic applications, electrically conducting polymers, nonlinear optics, new polymer systems, and polymers derived from biological media. These are the subject areas of this volume of "Contemporary Topics in Polymer Science". The intent of the Symposium was to focus on recent advances in polymeric materials. The technical sessions were complemented by an initial poster session which augmented the various technical sessions. A particular highlight of the meeting was the presentation to Professor Michael Szwarc of the 1990 Division of Polymer Chemistry Award by Dr. J. L. Benham, Chairman of the T Aymer Division. During his Award address, Professor Szwarc described how he had become a polymer chemist and later developed "living polymers." Without a doubt, Professor Szwarc has made a profound contribution to the polymer field, which has yielded many new forms of living polymerization. Erscheinungsdatum: 26.10.2012

Public Decision-Making Processes and Asymmetry of Information Jean-Jacques Laffont (auth.), Massimo Marrelli, Giacomo Pignataro (eds.) Springer US, 1, 2001
The problems arising from the existence of asymmetric information in public decision making have been widely explored by economists. Most of the traditional analysis of public sector activities has been reviewed to take accountofthe possible distortions arising from an asymmetric distribution of relevant information among the actors of the public decision-making process. A normative approach has been developed to design incentive schemes which tackle adverse selection and moral hazard problems within public organisations: our understanding of these problems is now much better, and some of the mechanisms designed have had important practical implications. While this analysis is still under way in many fields of public economics, as the papers by Jones and Zanola, and Trimarchi witness, a debate is ongoing on the possible theoretical limitations ofthis approach and on its actual relevance for public sector activities. This book encompasses different contributions to these issues, on both theoretical and practical areas, which were firstly presented at a conference in Catania. The innermost problem in the current discussion arises from the fact that this normative analysis is firmly rooted in the complete contracting framework, with the consequence that, despite the analytical complexities of most models, their results rely on very simplified assumptions. Most complexities of the organisation of public sector, and more generally, of writing "contracts", are therefore swept away. Erscheinungsdatum: 30.11.2000

That residues of pesticide and other contaminants in the total environment are of concern to everyone everywhere is attested by the reception accorded previous volumes of "Residue Reviews" and by the gratifying enthusiasm, sincerity, and efforts shown by all the in dividuals from whom manuscripts have been solicited. Despite much propaganda to the contrary, there can never be any serious question that pest-control chemicals and food-additive chemicals are essential to adequate food production, manufacture, marketing, and storage, yet without continuing surveillance and intelligent control some of those that persist in our foodstuffs could at times conceivably endanger the public health. Ensuring safety-in-use of these many chemicals is a dynamic challenge, for established on es are continually being dis placed by newly developed ones more acceptable to food tech nologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists, and changing pest-control requirements in progressive food-producing economies. These matters are of genuine concern to increasing numbers of govemmental agencies and legislative bodies. around the world, for some of these chemicals have resulted in a few mishaps from improper use. Adequate safety-in-use evaluations of any of thesechemicals per sisting into our foodstuffs are not simple matters, and they incorporate the considered judgments of many individuals highly trained in a variety of complex biological, chemical, food technological, medical, pharmacological, and toxicological disciplines. Agent-Based Methods in Economics and Finance: Simulations in Swarm (Advances in Computational Economics, 17) Charlotte Bruun (auth.), Francesco Luna, Alessandro Perrone (eds.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, Advances in Computational Economics, Advances in Computational Economics 17, 1, 2002
This second book on financial and economic simulations in Swarm marks the continued progress by a group of researchers to incorporate agent-based computer models as an important tool within their disci pline. It is encouraging to see such a clear example of Swarm helping to foster a community of users who rely on the Swarm framework for their own analyses. Swarm aims at legitimizing agent-based computer models as a tool for the study of complex systems. A further goal is that a common base framework will lead to the growth of user communities in specific areas of application. By providing an organizing framework to guide the development of more problem-specific structures, and by dealing with a whole range of issues that affect their fundamental correctness and their ability to be developed and reused, Swarm has sought to make the use of agent-based models a legitimate tool of scientific investigation that also meets the practical needs of investigators within a community. Structure Determination by X-Ray Crystallography M. F. C. Ladd, R. A. Palmer (auth.) Springer US : Imprint: Springer, 1, 1995
X-ray crystallography provides us with the most accurate picture we can get of atomic and molecular structures in crystals. It provides a hard bedrock of structural results in chemistry and in mineralogy. In biology, where the structures are not fully crystalline, it can still provide valuable results and, indeed, the impact here has been revolutionary. It is still an immense field for young workers, and no doubt will provide yet more striking develop ments of a major character. It does, however, require a wide range of intellectual application, and a considerable ability in many fields. This book will provide much help. It is a very straightforward and thorough guide to every aspect of the subject. The authors are experienced both as research workers themselves and as teachers of standing, and this is shown in their clarity of exposition. There are plenty of iliustrations and worked examples to aid the student to obtain a real grasp of the subject. Erscheinungsdatum: 07.05.2012
