Gesellsch. d. Wiss. vorgelegt sind. Nach Notizen in einem von GAuss seit Ende März 17 9 6 während einer längeren Reihe von Jahren über seine Untersuchungen geführten Tagebuche\*) ist derselbe Mitte Februar 1807 ausführlicher an die Theorie der cubischen und biquadratischen Reste herangegangen. Andererseits aber hat sich auch der Ersatz von f durch p wahrscheinlich unmittelbar daran angeschlossen , wie aus der Urschrift der hier vorstehend mitgetheilten Notizen hervorgeht. Man darf demnach annehmen, dass GAUSS bereits um die bezeichnete Zeit (1808} den so folgenreichen Schritt der Einfühnmg der ganzen complexen Zahlen definitiv vollzogen hat. GAUSS hat auch für die complexen Primzahlen 2-p und 3-p die drei Classen 8, 8', 8" aufgestellt (die oben reproducirt sind) sowie gleichfalls noch fü1• den Primtheiler 3-2 p von 19. Besonde1•s interessant ist, dass GAuss diese Ueberlegungen (wie entsprechend auch bei den biquadratischen Resten) in geomet1•ische Gestalt kleidete. Die ganzen complexen Zahlen a + b p liefern Punkte der Ebene, welche ein rhombisches Punktgitter darstellen. Die Gitterpunkte eines einzelnen Systems 8 lassen sich dabei in einen Bereich eingrenzen, welcher (im neueren Sinne gesprochen) als Discontinuitätsbereich einer unendlichen Gruppe linearer Substitutionen aufgefasst werden kann. GAuss hat für verschiedene Fälle Zeichnungen angefertigt; die für die Primzahl 6-p ist oben mitgetheilt. Es würde sich hier um die Gruppe handeln: ~t' = p"u+(a+bp), wo u eine complexe Variabele bedeutet, v = 1, 2, 3 zu setzen ist und a + b p alle der Congruenz a+bp =: o (mod. 6-p) genügende ganze Zahlen zu durchlaufen hat. Die in der GAuss'schen Figur angegebenen Bereiche beziehen sich auf die durch Zusatz der Substitution u' = ± u erweiterte Gruppe, Die Willkür in der Auswahl des Repräsentantensystems 8 läuft jetzt auf die Willkür in der Auswahl der Bereichgrenzen hinaus. Weiche Absicht GAuss •mit der von ihm gewählten Gestalt dieser Grenzen befolgt hat, ist leider nicht angegeben. Die am Schlusse der obigen Notizen unter [2] zusammengestellten zwölf Thesen folgen in der Urschrift direct auf die Betrachtungen der Zahlen a + b p. Das System aller ganzen complexen Zahlen a + b p erscheint hier eindeutig ersetzt durch das mod. (1 + x + xx) reducirte System aller ganzen Functionen von x mit ganzen rationalen Coefficienten. The content of the book collects some contributions related to the talks presented during the INdAM Workshop "Fractional Differential Equations: Modelling, Discretization, and Numerical Solvers", held in Rome, Italy, on July 12⁰́₃14, 2021. All contributions are original and not published elsewhere. The main topic of the book is fractional calculus, a topic that addresses the study and application of integrals and derivatives of noninteger order. These operators, unlike the classic operators of integer order, are nonlocal operators and are better suited to describe phenomena with memory (with respect to time and/or space). Although the basic ideas of fractional calculus go back over three centuries, only in recent decades there has been a rapid increase in interest in this field of research due not only to the increasing use of fractional calculus in applications in biology, physics, engineering, probability, etc., but also thanks to the availability of new and more powerful numerical tools that allow for an efficient solution of problems that until a few years ago appeared unsolvable. The analytical solution of fractional differential equations (FDEs) appears even more difficult than in the integer case. Hence, numerical analysis plays a decisive role since practically every type of application of fractional calculus requires adequate numerical tools. The aim of this book is therefore to collect and spread ideas mainly coming from the two communities of numerical analysts operating in this field - the one working on methods for the solution of differential problems and the one working on the numerical linear algebra side - to share knowledge and create synergies. At the same time, the book intends to realize a direct bridge between researchers working on applications and numerical analysts. Indeed, the book collects papers on applications, numerical methods for differential problems of fractional order, and related aspects in numerical linear algebra. Arbeitstagung des Deutschen Kollegiums flr Psychosomatische Medizin ist der Anlaß für ein Jubiläum, für einen Festakt gegeben, auf dem die Arbeit der vergangenen Jahre gewürdigt werden kann. Das Leitwort Ihrer Tagung und Ihr Arbeitsprogramm zeigen, daß Sie sich weit mehr vorgenommen haben und - ohne die Erfahrungen der Vergangenheit aus den Augen zu verlieren - Sie orientieren sich an der Frage, was eine Zukunft zum Wohle der Menschen an Nachdenken in der Gegenwart bedeutet. Diese Selbstverpflichtung ehrt das Kollegium flr Psychosomatische Medizin, die Organisatoren, die Referenten und die Teilnehmer und Teilnehmerinnen Ihrer Tagung; denn sie beweisen mit diesem aktiven Interesse, daß jener Pioniergeist, der nötig war, um das Kollegium zu gründen, heute noch vorhanden ist, daß man nicht rückschauend nur danken will, sondern vorausschauend denken will, um den Pioniergeist auch für die Zukunft zu erhalten. Und lassen Sie mich deshalb mit den Grüßen der Hessischen Landesregierung zugleich den Dank an all jene verbinden, die diesen Geist in den vergangenen 12 Jahren wachgehalten haben und die die Absicht haben, ihn auch für die Zukunft lebendig zu erhalten. Die grundlegende Idee der psychosomatischen Medizin wird während dieser Jubi läumsveranstaltung und in der Anlage Ihrer Arbeitstagung, so meine ich, beson ders deutlich. Die grundlegende Idee kommt zum Tragen, daß sich fortschreitende wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse in der lebendigen Beziehung zu lebendigen Sub jekten - ich zitiere - zu bewähren haben. This book identifies emerging technologies that allow the reuse and regeneration of industrial wastewater with innovative and applied approaches throughout the wastewater treatment cycle. Today, it is increasingly clear that treated urban wastewater, whose reuse has become an important component of long-term water management worldwide, is a key source of chemical pollutants and emerging biological concerns. Current water-quality guidelines for reclaimed wastewater predominantly address the risks associated with the presence of microbial organisms and chemical parameters such as biological oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, E. coli and worms, and in some cases heavy metals; however, they are insufficient for the full evaluation of risks. The global growth of population is concentrated in urban areas; therefore, most of the challenges and solutions related to wastewater reside in urban treatment plants. Unless wastewater management and wastewater governance processes are significantly improved within a decade, it is likely that our societies will face severe and prolonged water insecurity and urban floods. The application of sustainable technologies can eliminate or minimize micro-contaminants in wastewater. Several organizations focus on the potential impacts to humans and their environments by wastewater reuse. This book gathers new research and reviews work from researchers and scientists to identify the main barriers and limitations that will need to be overcome, so that wastewater reuse strategies gain more momentum and will be adopted more efficiently worldwide. <p><i>Whose Middle Ages? </i>is an interdisciplinary collection of short, accessible essays intended for the nonspecialist reader and ideal for teaching at an undergraduate level. Each of twenty-two essays takes up an area where digging for meaning in the medieval past has brought something distorted back into the present: in our popular entertainment; in our news, our politics, and our propaganda; and in subtler ways that inform how we think about our histories, our countries, and ourselves. Each author looks to a history that has refused to remain past and uses the tools of the academy to read and re-read familiar stories, objects, symbols, and myths.<br><br><i>Whose Middle Ages?</i> gives nonspecialists access to the richness of our historical knowledge while debunking damaging misconceptions about the medieval past. Myths about the medieval period are especially beloved among the globally resurgent far right, from crusading emblems on the shields borne by alt-right demonstrators to the on-screen image of a purely white European populace defended from actors of color by Internet trolls. This collection attacks these myths directly by insisting that readers encounter the relics of the Middle Ages on their own terms.<br><br>Each essay uses its author’s academic research as a point of entry and takes care to explain how the author knows what she or he knows and what kinds of tools, bodies of evidence, and theoretical lenses allow scholars to write with certainty about elements of the past to a level of detail that might seem unattainable. By demystifying the methods of scholarly inquiry, <i>Whose Middle Ages?</i> serves as an antidote not only to the far right’s errors of fact and interpretation but also to its assault on scholarship and expertise as valid means for the acquisition of knowledge.</p>

This contributed volume provides case studies from around the world that feature a convergence of indigenous and western knowledge in an attempt to understand complex socio-ecological systems. The book provides an understanding of socio-ecological systems in an ethical space using a 'Decoloniality' approach (i.e. untangling the production of knowledge from a primarily Eurocentric episteme). The work presented here integrates and merges indigenous knowledge with western science, thereby building on the strengths of each in service of understanding these systems. The editors of this volume approach indigenous communities and scientists as equal knowledge-holders and, in doing so, contributes towards improved understanding of socio-ecological systems and interactions in cross-cultural contexts. This volume will be of interest to scientists, instructors, students and policy makers across disciplines such as environmental sciences, social sciences, interdisciplinary studies, cultural studies, ethnobotany, anthropology and plant genetic resources.

__Ökologie der Biozonosen__ behandelt die vielfältigen Wechselbeziehungen der Arten in ökologischen Gemeinschaften und deren Bedeutung für die Struktur und Organisation von Ökosystemen. Unter Berücksichtigung aktueller Forschungsergebnisse werden Formen und Wirkungen der Interaktionen (Tier-Pflanze-Beziehungen, Prädation, Konkurrenz, Mutualismus) zunächst einzeln, dann integriert im komplexen Gefüge von Biozonosen dargestellt. This graduate textbook, written by experienced lecturers, features the study and computation of efficient reactive processes. The text begins with the problem of determining the chemical reaction properties by first decomposing complex processes into their elementary components. Next, the problem of two colliding mass points is investigated and relationships between initial conditions and collision outcomes are discussed. The failure of classical approaches to match experimental information is discussed and a quantum formulation of the calculation of the properties of two colliding bodies is provided. The authors go onto describe how the formalism is extended to structured collision partners by discussing the methods used to compute the electronic structure of polyelectronic reactants and products and the formalism of atom diatom reactions. Additionally, the relationships between the features of the potential energy surface and the outcomes of the reactive dynamics, are discussed. Methods for computing quantum, classical, and semi-classical reactive probabilities based on the already discussed concepts and tools are also featured and the resulting main typical reactive behaviors are analyzed. Finally, the possibility of composing the computational tools and technologies needed to tackle more complex simulations as well as the various competences and distributed computing infrastructure needed for developing synergistic approaches to innovation are presented.
